CHAPTER 1

Getting Started

An Overview of the New iOS 7

Apple’s seventh version, iOS 7 was released on the 18th of September 2013. As the newest version of Apple, it is also considered as one of the biggest changes to be seen by iPad and iPhone users throughout the decade. What differentiates it the most from the previous versions of iOS is its new and amazing features. Some of these features include refined photography, layering, new icons, and enhanced transparency, gyroscope-based parallaxing, and much more!

This new version of iOS notifies great improvement in terms of its additional features as well as aesthetics. Though you will observe a lot of changes while using your iOS 7, this

Page 8: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

guide will help you get familiar with the new features. Eventually, you will start loving the new form of your mobile OS!

The Change

The fresh screen of the iOS 7 is worth looking at. We can say that this is the major change you will notice in this new version of iOS. Gone are its glossy icons and faux shadows which were developed to imitate a surface and textures that resemble those with real-life effects. Instead of those glossy effects, its user interface is now lighter and brighter with the addition of an all new set of eye-catching icons.

What didn’t change in this iOS version are its settings along with some core features. In spite of its new look, many options and features present in iOS 7 are exactly the same as they were in the previous versions.

Along with the new features, some of the core apps of Apple are now available in iOS 7 in an updated form. Though a few of them are revamped, Apple has updated its other apps so that they can also fit in. For instance, the white background and light have adorned apps such as, the App Store and Safari. These apps have remained unchanged inspite of their fresh look.

Can I Update My Device to iOS 7?

Almost all the iPhone and iPad users have the same question! Of course, who doesn’t want this newer version of Apple? However, it is important to mention here that the iOS 7 is not compatible with each and every iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch because of some hardware limitations.

You can easily install and download iOS 7 if you have any of the following devices:

a. iPad Mini

b. iPad 2

c. iPhone 4

d. iPhone 4S

e. iPhone 5

f. iPad third generation (with Retina display)

g. iPad fourth generation (with Retina display)

h. iPod Touch fifth generation

How to Install iOS 7

After hearing about the release of iOS 7, you must be waiting to buy your new iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S that consists of this great software already. However, if your current device is still new, and you want to use it for a few more months, then ideally, you should upgrade your device to iOS 7 without the need to purchase a new Apple device. This is what others are doing too, which is why you can find two ways to upgrade your iPhone or iPad to iOS 7. These are:

1. Over-the-Air 2. iTunes

Selecting one method out of the two is entirely your choice. So, before you begin installing iOS 7, you should have a look at both these methods. The following points will help you understand the entire process of carrying out each method of installing iOS 7 to

your device correctly.

Method 1: Over-the-Air

Being connected to your Wi-Fi network can make things pretty simple. By choosing the Over-the-Air method, you do not need to worry about installing the iOS 7 from iTunes. Simply go to “Settings”, then “General”, and from there to “Software Update.” You will see your screen just like the one mentioned below:

Now tap the “Download and Install” button to install iOS 7. After this, you will see the terms

and conditions appearing on the screen. Tap them to accept them.

Page 11: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

A file will be downloaded to your device. When this is done, you will see the “Install Now” button. Tap this button to go ahead. After the iOS 7 has been installed in your device, you will need to restart your device.

As the iOS 7 starts, it will show you an initial greeting along with the “Slide to set up” option. Slide it to configure your iOS 7.

Page 12: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

As you follow the instructions and tap accordingly, you will be able to complete your device update easily. By tapping “Continue” as seen from the above-mentioned image, you will be required to complete the remaining steps such as, location services, iCloud settings, and password settings.

Page 13: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Once you have created your own password, you will be able to protect your data from others.

Method 2:

You should choose this method to install iOS 7 to your device if you are near your PC. Furthermore, you may feel that you can install the iOS 7 faster through iTunes. To start off with this, check out if you have updated the version of your iTunes already. It should be version 11.1. So, Open “iTunes”, and select “iTunes”, and then go to “Updates.” Select it to install its latest version.

Once you have updated your iTunes, it is time to connect your device to it. From your device, go to the upper-right side of the iTunes. Now, choose the “Update” button.

You will see a notification that will tell you that there is a new version of IOS available to be downloaded. Now, click the “Download and Update” button. The new version will start downloading. This may take about an hour.

Page 14: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

However, if you have limited time and you just want to download it, and want to install it some other time, then you can select the option, “Download Only.”

If you have selected the “Download and Install” option, and the download begins, monitor the progress through its status window. While IOS 7 is being downloaded and installed, make sure that you have connected your device to your PC till the device restarts. Once it restarts, you will see a greeting on your screen. This indicates that you have successfully downloaded and installed IOS 7 on your device through iTunes.

CHAPTER 2

New Features

Now that you have learned how to download and install iOS 7 to your iPhone, iPad or any other compatible device, you can easily do so without the assistance of a professional. Now what? You have the most wanted iOS 7, which means that it’s time to explore its additional features in detail. This chapter has been designed to help you discover all the new features the iOS 7 offers you in your device. So, here are the new features you will come across frequently:

Navigating iOS

The first significantly new feature of iOS 7 is its ability for navigating iOS by swiping from the right and left edges of your screen. This feature is applied to menus of navigation as well as when you want to browse the Web such as, in Safari.

Though you can still use the traditional buttons as well as other navigation methods to browse the Web, this new option of swiping through the edges can help you navigate the iOS is a more quicker and efficient way. However, while using this feature, you need to ensure that your device is not in a kind of case that may actually limit access to your screen’s edges.

Control Centre

Page 16: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Control Centre is one of those features of iOS 7 which is quite popular among many iOS users, and is in their wish lists. This is a simple feature which can be activated easily by following a specific procedure. You just need to swipe upwards from your screen’s bottom. You will see a number of options from which you can control the settings of your iOS. These icons can be arranged differently, depending on the type of mode you want to use your phone in. These two types of modes are portrait mode and landscape mode. However, the icons, functions, and options remain unchanged.

Something unique about the Control Centre feature is that it can be accessible from anywhere in your device by default. This is why you can get access to it from your device’s lock screen. Here, you do not need to unlock your phone to see the options available from Control Centre.

If, for security reasons, you do not want the options of Control Centre to be visible from your lock screen, then you can disable this feature. Once this is done, it will not appear on your lock screen. Once you have changed this setting by going to “Settings”, and then tapping “Control Centre”, you can get the same feature when you use your apps.

Page 17: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

As you open the Control Centre in the portrait mode, you will see the icons of “Airplane Mode”, “Wi-Fi”, “Portrait Lock”, “Do Not Disturb”, and “Bluetooth.” Previously, the Portrait Lock was visible on the device’s multitasking bar, but in the iOS 7 version, it is accessible from the screen of Control Centre.

Also, you can have quick access in terms of changing the controls of brightening, along with the play and pause options.

AirDrop

When it comes to facilitating sharing between various devices of iOS, AirDrop is its newest feature which can help you share easily. You can configure AirDrop from the Control Centre to enable interaction with those in your contacts. Furthermore, it allows you to select the people you want to and do not want to interact. All you have to do is to select an option that suits you the most.

To explain it more clearly, you are required to be visible to the other party so that you can share or receive files or other content of your interest easily. However, you can choose a visibility option that is best for you. For instance, if you do not want to be discoverable to all the people in your contacts, then you can choose a relevant option available in the AirDrop menu. The following image clarifies it in a better way:

Page 18: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Using iOS 7 with this level of customized visibility makes AirDrop a pleasant feature for all its users. All you need to know is the know-how of using it correctly. To do so, choose an item you want to share. This can be anything from photos to videos to contacts. Tap the “Share” button to see the AirDrop option. Once you do this, you will need to specify which device you want to share an item with. If there are no devices showing up, tell your recipient to turn on their AirDrop feature.

Page 19: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

If you want to receive something from the sender via AirDrop, you will get the confirmation dialogue on your device which will ask you if you agree to receive the sender’s item. This prompt often includes a photo or video preview to indicate the item you will be receiving after accepting the confirmation.

Notification Centre

You will notice an overhaul in terms of viewing the Notification Centre. Now, you will not find any “Tweet and Post” shortcut to compose Facebook and Twitter updates. Instead, they have been replaced with the tabs, “Today”, “All”, and “Missed.”

Page 20: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

The “Today” Tab

The “Today” tab gives the overview of calendar events, summarizes weather conditions, provides reminders, alarm notifications, and any to-do list. Now, notifications will be automatically synced between your iOS devices so that any of them you read on your iPad will also reflect on the iPhone.

Depending on your choice, you can enable and disable assets of “Today” view, such as, weather and stocks. Also, if you do not want direct access to the Notification Centre from your lock screen, you can easily change its settings by tapping “Settings,” and then to “Notification Centre.”

Page 21: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

The “All” Tab

As the name of this feature suggests, “All” shows all your notifications which are not seen by you yet. This feature is quite similar to the notification centre in iOS 6. Still, you have an option to arrange notifications’ display order. You can do this by going to “Settings”, and then, “Notification Centre.”

Page 22: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

The “Missed” Tab

The “Missed” tab of Notifications Centre is a lot useful when your device has not been there with you for some time, and you have not checked your notifications at all. It provides a sequential view of these missed notifications such as, missed calls and messages. If you want to know what you have been missing when you were not around your phone, then just see it in this tab.

iTunes Radio

iTunes Radio is Apple’s big announcement in terms of launching its iOS 7. This feature provides music streaming service to iTunes users for free. It is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod Touch, and desktop equivalents on PC and Mac.

Initially offered to US users only, they can access this service by using their Music app. While using the service, you cannot pick the exact album or song. Instead, it offers you a shortcut for buying the selected track from iTunes in its top right side of “Now Playing”

Page 23: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

screen. This service also includes adverts, so do not be surprised when any sponsored message interrupts you while you are listening to a song. However, if you pay a subscription fee of $24.99, you can listen to it without the interference of adverts.

New Multitasking

iOS 7 has overhauled the way your apps will multitask. Previously, iOS always had a strong grip in terms of multitasking. However, it has also been using a system to suspend and resume apps so that there are no battery issues. Of course, if an app runs in its background constantly, there are high chances that your iPhone’s battery will be drained in no time. This is one of the reasons why Apple has compensated this with its iOS 7. By using this new version of iOS, you will notice an increased battery life along with the background processes.

The iOS 7 makes multitasking easier by learning the habits of a user. It updates apps even before the user has opened them in its background. For instance, if there are updates for social apps available, they will be updated before the user opens them. Similarly, apps used frequently by the user will be updated according to the user’s choice.

Page 24: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Push Triggers

Push Triggers is a new system introduced in the iOS 7. With this feature, apps receiving push notifications will begin to load the content in which you are notified. For instance, if you have received any Facebook notification, the Facebook app will appear on the screen and will begin to load that notification as soon as it arrives. This means that you will have to wait less to see the content you have been notified in.

New “Camera & Photos” Apps

The Camera as well as Photos apps of iOS 7 are redesigned, while their functionality remains almost the same. However, you will notice some really nice features within.

Page 25: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Camera

There is a new interface in the “Camera” app. In addition, it provides users a new and easy way to switch between its modes. This can be done by swiping right and left.

Along with the addit0ion of video mode, this new version also consists of a “square-crop” photo mode. This mode used in taking images in the form of square sizes. So, if you love apps such as Instagram’s “square” approach for photo sharing, then the square-crop mode enables you to shoot the same way within your Camera app. This is definitely a quicker way to shoot as compared to launching Instagram or any other similar program.

Page 26: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Panorama Mode

Panorama mode is a feature of the “Camera” app which was also there in the iOS 6. You can choose this mode by holding your device in its portrait mode, and then slowly panning across the targeted scene. This way, the device captures a large-sized panorama. If you want to enable flash, then you can look at the top corner of your screen and choose an option accordingly. Toggling the grid is also an option that can be accessed by moving to “Settings”, and from there to “Photos & Camera.”

Camera Roll

On the bottom-left corner of your screen, you will see a shortcut to “Camera Roll.” This can be used in situations when you need to quickly review your photos. Something new about this iOS 7 feature is a new option on its opposite side. This new button is used to apply photo filters. Since these photo filters are compatible with latest devices and software only, you can use them if you have 5th generation iPod Touch or iPhone 5.

Page 27: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Once you have taken a photo when the filter is turned on, you can edit it accordingly. However, you have an option to remove the filter while editing a photo. This has made the usage of filters a non-destructive way to use the iOS 7. Filters are also available through the “Photos” app.

Photos

In the iOS 7 version, you will find some changes in the “Photos” app. It is now divided into three tabs:

1. Photos 2. Shared 3. Albums

Let’s have a look at each one in detail.

Page 28: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Photos

The “Photos” feature is one of the news features of this app available in iOS 7. It categorizes all photos quite intelligently into Collections, Moments, and Years. This app makes use of different data, for instance, geo-location, image type, and time so that you can organize all your photos in your device automatically.

This makes it an effective way to browse images throughout your device.

Shared

“Shared” is a new feature of iCloud activity in iPhone or iPad. It consists of items that have been shared and received by you as an iCloud user. All your Likes, Comments, and new activities will be shared here. It does not matter if you are sharing an item with someone who is currently using iOS 6. Once you have shared an item with someone

Page 29: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

who has iOS 6, the incoming as well as outgoing images will be formatted nicely with the help of this new feature in your iOS 7.

Albums

The “Albums” feature does not consist of any drastic change as compared to the options offered by iOS 6. The iOS 7 version features Photo Stream and Camera Roll. Other than that, it consists of separate albums to store Videos and Panoramas. You can categorize images according to your own choice by creating your own photo albums.

Photo Filters

Photo filters are available for you even if you are using your iPhone 4 or an older device. The only requirement here is to install iOS 7 in your device. So, when you want to edit photos, all you have to do is to edit one photo and tap on the icon of Photo Filters. This icon resembles the 3 overlapping circles.

Page 30: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

If you want to use additional editing tools, then it is worth knowing that those are the same as they used to be in iOS 6. These editing tools enable you to perform quick edits, red-eye removal, and auto-enhancement.

App Updates

Automatic updates has been one of the most demanded features of iOS. Now, iOS 7 is the version that offers its functionality to its users. The “App Store” is almost unchanged except that it has introduced an “Updates” tab that now features Pending Updates (the apps to be updated while your device is idle, plugged in, or on Wi-Fi) as well as past updates which have been implemented.

The entire process of app updates is automated. However, you can use the option of disabling automatic updates by tapping “Settings”, and then “iTunes & Apps Store.” Once you are there, just select Updates off.

By using the “Updates” tab, you can also get access to the library of your purchases and downloaded apps.

Finger Sensor Function

Previously, a traditional “Home” button was always required to perform any task on your device. But now, iPhone 5 has replaced it with its fingerprint sensor. This sensor makes it possible to unlock as well as authenticate different other actions by using biometric data. This has eliminated the need to use a password or pass code before using the Home button.

Though this advanced feature of iOS 7 is worth using, Apple has considered security as the primary way to safeguard its customer’s devices. So, if your iPhone or iPad is inactive for 48 hours, or if there is a reboot, then you will have to unlock your device by inserting your password or pass code.

Activation Lock

This is another interesting update brought to iPhone and iPad users from Apple. It has been developed keeping in consideration the security standpoint. Called Activation Lock, it is formed to prevent thieves from embezzlement of any of the iOS devices.

It is quite simple to use this feature. As you change your settings by tapping “Settings”, then “Privacy”, “Location Services”, and then “Find My Phone”, you will be able to enable the “Find My Phone” feature. Once you have successfully done it, your device will be safe from any theft as its functionality stops the device from activating. This applies to your iPhone or iPad even if it restores via iTunes.

If the Activation Lock feature has been enabled, your device will be usable again only if a user is able to enter your device’s original Apple username/ID along with its password which is linked with it. So, if you have iOS 7 in your device, and you want to sell your

device to someone, then make sure that you have removed all your information related to your Apple ID and password.

CHAPTER 3

Updates and Overhauls

The previous chapter highlighted all the new features offered in iOS 7. This chapter will focus on those features of iOS which exist in its previous version, but are available in the iOS 7 in an updated form. This is what grabs the attention of iOS 7 users. To know what this new functionality is all about, read on.

Home Screen and Lock Screen

The changes you will notice in the Home screen and Lock screen are mainly cosmetic in terms of their new look. The most popular “Slide to unlock” button has gone forever. Instead, you will see an interface which slides away on its own and reveals the “PIN” lock entry.

The Lock Screen

As you use the iOS 7 on your device, you will notice that you can access the Control Centre as well as Notification Centre from your lock screen directly. However, if you do not want anyone else to use it, then you can disable this option by choosing the “Settings” option.

From the lock screen, one cannot get access to the existing images that are present in the “Camera Roll” shortcut. Besides this, you can access the Camera functionality even if the device is locked. This can be done by swiping upwards on your screen.

The Home Screen

Page 33: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Look at the home screen of your device. Do you see any difference? Yes, there is a visible change brought by iOS 7, i.e. the search box. It can be seen on the top of your screen. Access it directly by swiping on your screen so that you can see its text-entry field.

What helps you save a lot of time while searching is the absence of the search button. Since there is no “Search” button on the screen, all you are required to do is to type what you want to search.

Page 34: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

As you type the keyword or key phrase, the device will automatically search the required information for you without the need to tap the “Search” button.

Spotlight Search

Spotlight Search is a feature of iOS 7 that enables you to search your contacts, apps, and other items on your iPhone or iPad. To access the screen of Spotlight Search, and activate it, you can follow these instructions:

a. Go to your Home Screen

b. Swipe down on the screen. Make sure that you do not swipe the screen from its top as it can activate the Notification Centre.

Page 35: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

c. You will see a search box and a keyboard on the screen. Type in the search box and search for any contacts, documents, or other data from there. If you want to search the Web, your device will require Siri or Safari to carry out the task.

If you want to customize your Spotlight Search, you can follow these basic steps:

a. Select “Settings”

b. Tap “General”

c. Search for “Spotlight Search.” By using this option, you can either enable or disable any content such as, events, mail, music, and videos according to your choice.

Multiple Pages

Something not seen in iOS 7 includes folders that consist of multiple pages. So, you will no longer be limited to using twelve items in a single folder. Rather than that, the folder will come up with one new page after you have used the usable space.

The Clock App

The icon of the Clock app has been upgraded into a more sophisticated app. It shows the time along with blue dots that appear next to the recently updated apps.

Brand New Wallpapers

Apple has come up with dynamic wallpapers with a variety of colors you can choose from. To select any wallpaper, simply go to “Settings”, and then tap “Wallpapers & Brightness.” From there, select “Choose Wallpaper,” and then select “Dynamic.”

Something new about these wallpapers is that they contain a parraflex effect in the background. This effect moves the image of the background slightly. This is dependent on the way you are holding your device.

Email and Messaging

Email

There is a change in Apple’s “Mail and Messages” apps. However, not everything related to these apps have been updated. The main change noticed in iOS 7 in terms of email and messaging is the appearance of apps. “Mail” now comprises of some advanced mailboxes you can access from the “Mailboxes” screen. To do this, tap “Edit” and enable them.

New additions in these apps include “All Sent”, “Flagged”, messages comprising of “Attachments”, and email sent option. If you do not want the VIP inbox or any other such inboxes in your Mail, then you can disable them easily.

Now, Mail features search functionality which is considerably refined as well as faster than the one offered by previous versions of iOS. It does not require you to search for something by using a field. Instead, it makes searching throughout your emails to match phrases. To search for a specific account, you are required to select its specific mailbox. This is accessible from the “Mailboxes screen.”

Page 38: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

While browsing “All Mail”, you can swipe from right to left to reveal the “Delete” option. If you want to move the entire thread, then you can use the “More” option. This option can also be used to quickly reply, flag, forward, and mark an email as read and unread. Individual messages that are in the thread can also be dealt with the same option.

Messages

You can observe a similar change in Messages. However, this includes the deletion of messages only. The rest of the functions of this app are same as found in the previous versions of iOS. So, when you want to delete a thread, you no longer need to tap “Edit” first. Instead, just swipe your screen from right to left. You will see the “Delete” option. Tap it to remove a thread.

Safari

This Web browser offers an updated version which is available in all devices being operated using iOS. Moreover, it performs as well as looks better as compared to Safari of previous iOS versions. The search bar which was there separately has gone. Instead, you will see the integration of search requests into the web browser’s address bar.

In addition, when you scroll with your finger, the controls from the bottom automatically disappear. So, if you want to reveal them, you can swap upwards. Once you do this, you will see a bottom row that consists of the same controls. These are just like the controls you must have came across in the previous versions of iOS. However, there is one difference, i.e. this row of controls also provides access to History and Bookmarks along with navigation controls and tabs.

Since the tabs are limitless for iOS 7 users, they are now displayed in the vertical scrolling format. This format suits this new feature a lot better than previous view of

Page 39: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

tabs. Apple has done some extra effort here to beautify these tabs. This is for those devices that are compatible with parallax effect. This effect is not only limited to your Home Screen, but goes beyond this. It is visible in the new tabs too, which is why it allows you to tilt your device to get the feedback on screen.

Shared Links

Another new feature of Safari is its ability to see shared links. These links are taken from the connected accounts. Though this functionality seems to be great, it is hidden with the “Bookmarks “and “History.” You can get it by tapping an icon which resembles a book. It is available along with the bottom bar of Safari. By using this feature, you can check Facebook and Twitter feeds in the form of shared content.

Other Features

The new feature of Safari is available in the form of iCloud Keychain. This feature syncs and stores sensitive information such as, personal details, passwords, as well as credit card information between Mac computers and iOS devices.

So, when you use Safari to enter this kind of sensitive information, you will have an option to store it in the device you are using. However, you can always customize the level of storage of such information.

In case, you do not want the browser to track your information, all you need to do is to change its settings. To do this, tap “Settings”, and then “Safari.” Now, select the “Do Not Track” setting, and you are done.

Page 40: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Tabs

Previously, the usage of tabs was almost restricted as Safari had a limit of eight maximum tabs. But now, tabs are said to be limitless. This means that you can open as many tabs as you like. Don’t worry about the battery being drained because iOS will manage the web pages accordingly.

Siri

As the digital assistant, Siri has also received a considerable update in the latest version of iOS. There are various features in Siri, ranging from new female and male voices in English, German, and French to a lot more. To select a language of your choice, tap “Settings”, and then go to “Siri.” You will get entirely new control in terms of using this feature.

Now, Siri can interact with settings and apps. It also includes its ability of toggling features such as, Bluetooth. In addition, you can also launch apps with this. However, Siri is not limited to this only. You can use other commands too. An interesting example of these commands includes asking about your social media updates. You can do this by “asking” the Siri about “What is <Mention a friend’s name> saying?”

Along with that, you can directly go to the querying services such as, Bing or Wikipedia by giving your spoken request. This feature can also be used in terms of controlling the iTunes Radio.

There is also the personalized list that comprises of all the default Siri commands which are accessible to you within your region. If you want to know what these are, you just need to ask, “What can I ask you?”

App Store

Now comes the App Store, which looks as airy and light as the other functions of iOS 7’s new interface. Though there is the “Updates” tab, there is one more addition to this app, which is known as the “Near Me” tab.

Apps for Travelers

The “Near Me” tab makes use of your information such as geographical location so that it can assess the apps that are popular and are nearby. Along with that, it ensures that these apps are compatible with the travelers who are looking for transport guides, local-trending apps, or some kind of navigational aids.

This makes it a highly useful feature of the App Store, and it has been designed especially for you if travel frequently.

Wish List

A wish list is something new offered by iOS 7 for the users of iPhone, iPad, and other compatible devices. By using a wish list, you can add apps to it. You can access it any time after tapping the App Store. When you enter this app, you will see an icon in its top-right side. Once you have selected an app you want to add to the wishlist, view the same app by tapping the App Store. When you see it, tap “Share”, and then choose “Wish List.”

Though this feature is going to be loved by all iPhone and iPad users, it works for the paid apps only. Therefore, if you have selected a free app to be added to your Wish List, you cannot perform the task further.

Page 42: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Notes and Reminders

The Notes app has almost the same functionality as of the one belonging to previous

versions of iOS. Of course, there are no handwriting fonts. Rather than that, the Notes

app now makes use of a clear interface while it still syncs notes with other accounts that

are connected with your device.

Also, Reminders look significantly different as well. This is because they now utilize

scrolling lists that have the style of Passbooks. These scrolling lists collapse so that you

can have an easy perusal. To use it, tap any list and open it. You can give a different

look to each list by assigning different colors to each list individually. Here, you need to

tap “Edit”, and then “Colour.”

What if you want to set scheduled reminders? iOS 7 has it for you. Besides the Search

bar on the right corner of your screen, you can see a clock icon. This is the new button

known as the “Scheduled” button which is used to set scheduled reminders. This button

also resembles the alarm clock. If there are any upcoming events you want to be

reminded of, then you can tap this icon, and set the scheduled reminder.

Sharing Options

Though there is an addition of a sharing option, “AirDrop” already, you can get access

to some more sharing options in your iOS 7. This includes the following new services:

a. Vimeo

b. Flicker

These are considered as the additional sharing options so that you can share videos

and photos with others. Furthermore, if you want to connect it to your accounts, and

share your content, you require an app for browsing photos or videos. However, iOS 7

uses these new features to upload your photos and videos directly to your accounts.

This makes it an advanced feature offered by the iOS 7 for iPhone and iPad users.

Settings

The “Settings” app available in iOS 7 is almost the same as it used to be in the previous

version. This includes various items that you already had made use of. However, you

will notice some of the slightest changes in this too. These changes include one Mobile

option. This option will allow you to limit the use of mobile data by specific apps along

with viewing usage statistics.

Furthermore, Apple has given strong emphasis to the Privacy option as well. Now, it

includes all options of “Location Services” along with some other new options that will

help you limit the access to connectivity of Bluetooth and your microphone.

Some of the other existing options in Settings include Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Personal

Hotspot, Carrier, Notification Center, Control Centre, and Do Not Disturb.

CHAPTER 4

Other Features

Now that you have learnt about all the main changes of iOS 7 you can see in your

iPhone or iPad, you must know about all the other changes some common features

have brought with them. Though these features can be found in any internet operating

system, what makes the features of iOS 7 is the fact that they are slightly advanced as

compared to those available in the previous versions.

This chapter comprises of detailed information about these features. Read on to know

more about them.

Calendar

Though the “Calender” app was considered as one of the most prominent designs

developed for iOS 7, its functionality is quite alike as compared to the calendars of

previous versions of iOS 7. All that is changes is its layout. It is clean, logical, and easier

for your eyes as compared to the past versions.

If you want to add events to the Calendar, you need to use the same “+” button. You

can add as many events as you like. What is special about it is that you will not have

any difficulty in terms of identifying a specific event from the Calendar. This is mainly

because the events made on this Calendar have different colors which are changed

according to the account of their associations. This way, it becomes easier for iOS 7

users to differentiate between personal and professional events separately.

To create a new event within the current year, you need to do it differently as compared

to the other versions of iOS 7. The Calendar options such as, “Start time”, “End time”,

and “All-day events’ can now be accessible from the top. Likewise, if you have already

enabled the “Time Zone” field, you are able to edit them independently.

There is a new option that alerts you even before an event has come. This way, you can

prepare your mind for any upcoming occasion. Furthermore, the addition of a URL field

enables you to add a link. When you tap the link in the screen of event details, you can

open the webpage in the Safari browser.

Apple has recognized the significance of diversity among its users, and has came up

with another useful option for them, i.e. the “Start Week On” section. So, if your work

week starts on a different day unlike other weekdays, then you can change the date

Page 45: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

settings on your device accordingly. For instance, if Sunday is the start day set by

default on your calendar, then you can change it by tapping the “Start Week On” option.

Facetime

FaceTime is Apple’s proprietary service for video calling. It gets an entirely new app in

iOS 7. It has new features along with a fresh look. These new features introduce the

introduction of “FaceTime Audio.” This is a service which is a lot similar to Skype as well

as other services provided by standard VoIP companies. This new feature allows the

iOS 7 users to contact each other without the functionality of its video feature. Simply

put, this feature enables two users to make a phone call over the internet. This makes it

is necessary that both the users should be connected to Wi-Fi.

So, if you want to talk to a friend through FaceTime Audio, you can get access to it

through various locations of your device. For instance, as you open the “Phone” app,

and look into a particular app, you will notice the option of Facetime Audio for each

contact. Just tap the option, and there you go!

To ensure that you use this feature without any difficulty, you can follow the below-

mentioned instructions:

a. Once you have your iOS 7 installed, go to the “Contacts” app.

b. You will see all your contacts now. Choose the one you would like to talk via

FaceTime Audio. Also, make sure that the other person has access to Wi-Fi. So, if

he/she is available to talk through FaceTime, you will see something similar to the

above-mentioned image.

Page 46: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

c. There are two icons besides the “Facetime” option, i.e. one with the icon of movie

camera, and the other with a telephone icon. Since you want to choose FaceTime

Audio, you should tap the telephone icon. Once this is done, you will be able to hear

the ring similar to that of a regular call.

The call will start with a display. This display has been modified according to the usage

of FaceTime Audio.

It is ideal to use FaceTime Audio especially when you have just come home from a long

day and do not feel comfortable in showing your face to your friend. Even if this is not

the scenario, sometimes it becomes difficult to hold your iPhone or iPad in a position

that aligns well with the position of your face. So, it is best to make the talking

experience easier by choosing FaceTime Audio.

Maps

To add something new in its “Maps” app, Apple has not come up with an entirely new

software update. This is mainly because of the advancement in this app which had

already been made at the advent of Apple’s iOS 6. The data in Maps was engineered in

such a way that it enabled Apple to bring improvements in this app without the need to

update its software.

However, Maps is updated to enable walking directions for every turn. This can be

easily accessed with the help of an arrow positioned in the top-left side of Maps. Just

Page 47: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

tap the arrow, enter the start point and the end point, and choose “walking” as your

transportation method.

As you enter this basic information about the destination you want to reach, the app will

guide you by giving you directions on each and every turn. As you go ahead, directions

will take the required turn by popping up on your screen.

You will be getting the directions even if you are not running Maps actively. However, it

is necessary to know that using GPS and some notifications can have an impact on

your battery life. One thing you will love the most about Maps is that fact that it works

according to your current activities. For instance, if you are driving at night, you can use

its night-time mode. This new mode makes the screen appear dim so that it can work at

a suitable level. This eliminates the element of distraction while driving. This mode is

automatically activated, which means that you are not required to enable it yourself.

Compass

Available only for iPod touch and iPhone users, the “Compass” app has been designed

well to add value to the new version of iOS. It has been restructured from the top, and it

uses only four colors, i.e. white, gray, black, and a bit of red.

Though the Compass comprises of all those features that were available in iOS 6, you

will notice a bit of change in its magnetic north which has been moved to “Settings”, and

from there to “Compass.” The added feature includes the presence of geo-location

services. This category of Compass services will enable you to look at your current

state and city besides the reading of compass. This also includes the coordinates of

latitude as well as longitude.

So, when you need to follow a bearing, for instance, 23 degrees to Northwest, then you

can get the compass by tapping the face of the compass once. This indicates that you

have set the compass. As you move further, the compass will draw a red-colored arc on

a circle’s inside. This shows the distance to which you are deviating from the originally

set course.

Recalibration Tool

Page 48: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

In addition, the “Compass” app also provides a recalibration tool in which the dot follows

the circle. This is not only easy to follow, it is easier for explanation to passersby too.

Levels of Compass

The “Compass” app still has to offer a lot more to its iOS 7 users. This includes another

new feature of the app, i.e. its exclusive tool. All you have to do is to swipe to the left on

this compass, and then you can get access to this excessive tool, which is known as

Page 49: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

“horizontal” and “vertical” level. This level is really simple, and it uses white, green, and

black geometric shapes so that level information can be displayed.

To achieve the horizontal level of your device, simply keep your device on a flat surface

on the back. After this, you will notice two white circles which will appear with a

measurement degree at the middle of these circles. The circles will change till they are

overlapped perfectly for some seconds. As they overlap, the color of your screen will

turn into a bright green color. This color indicates that you have successfully achieved

the perfect horizontal level.

To get access to the vertical level, hold your iPhone in the portrait or landscape position.

Now, you can get access to the rectangular level. The screen is divided into black and

white rectangles. When both the rectangles reach the equilibrium position, it turns

green. This is a useful widget and can save you some dollars by eliminating the need to

purchase an app for the same.

Passbook

Though the layout of Passbook may look a lot different from the previous version of iOS,

it still functions in a similar manner as compared to iOS 6. The main thing which has

been changed in this feature is that it scans codes directly to your “Passbook app. This

way, you can get maximum benefit from the digital wallet by adding your coupon,

boarding card, and member’s discount to it.

Obviously, this does not work for all the devices. It will work for your device only if it is

compatible with this feature. To ensure whether you are able to use it on your iPhone or

iPad, you can try this out by performing a simple activity. Just hit the button of Scan

Code in your Passbook, and see what happens. Also, make sure that your camera is

steady.

Sounds and Wallpapers

Apple has upgraded some of its features into new versions in a customary way. This

also applies to its introduction of new wallpapers as well as sounds in its iOS 7. These

additions are available with the help of sotware update. This includes dynamic

wallpapers that can be used in a different way. They will react and move according to

how you tilt your device. This means that iOS 7 has put an end to still photography.

To choose these awesome wallpaper designs from your iPhone or iPad, go to

“Settings”, and then tap “Wallpapers & Brightness.” Once you have chosen one wall

paper, you can tilt your device and enjoy the new reactions of your wallpaper.

Page 50: User Guide on iOS 7 - Xpert Contentxpertcontent.com/samples/Ebooks/User-Guide-on-iOS-7.pdf · How to Install iOS 7 CHAPTER 2 New Features Navigating iOS Control Centre AirDrop Notification

Now comes the presence of some new sounds in this new version. These sounds are

divided into two categories, i.e. modern tones of iOS 7 and the Classical section of

tones that comprise of sounds from iOS 6 along with other previous versions. You can

choose any of these tones by going to “Settings”, and then tapping “Sounds.” To set

one of these tones as alarm tone, just open the “Clock” app, and select a tone you like

to be added as an alarm tone.
