2012 Matrix vs. 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i
Top Matrix Advantages Over Impreza 2.0i
AdvAnced chAssIsToyota is famous for its engineering skills. Matrix is a good example, with mechanical and chassis features that put it ahead of Impreza.
Lower emissions Matrix ranks as an ultra-low-emissions vehicle, meaning it produces extremely low levels of some forms of emissions compared with other vehicles in the same model year.
Larger wheels Matrix rides on 16-inch wheels, larger than Impreza’s 15-inch wheels. In addition to creating a bigger contact patch, they look better, too.
Front and rear stabilizer bars Matrix features stabilizer bars on both front and rear suspension assemblies. Impreza 2.0i doesn’t bother with a stabilizer bar in the rear.
FeATure-rIch AudIOIt’s a connected world, and Matrix has an audio system with connections and operational features not found in Impreza.
More inputs The Matrix audio system includes an AUX input for connecting MP3 devices. Impreza audio doesn’t offer this extra input for music players or smart phones.
steering wheel controls Matrix’s steering-wheel-mounted audio controls help the driver keep hands on the wheel. Impreza audio doesn’t offer this flexibility.
Subaru seems to cater to two separate markets. In parts of the country that are snowbound in winter, a Subaru is more of a mainstream choice, in large part because all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard across the line. However, in other parts of the country, a Subaru is often more of a “personal statement” vehicle that a buyer chooses for an expressive purpose.
Toyota Matrix is uniquely positioned to challenge Subaru Impreza on both fronts. Matrix S has an available AWD system for extra traction in winter driving, and every Matrix exudes a flair and style that appeals to the individualist.
cArgO cOnvenIencesSmall wagons are designed to be good at carrying cargo and other items of daily life. Matrix just happens to be better at it than Impreza.
cargo-friendly flooring The hard surface of Matrix’s cargo area may stand up to wear and tear better than the carpeted surface of Impreza.
rear door bins Matrix has convenient rear-door bins to hold small items. Impreza rear-seat passengers don’t have that advantage.
cargo-area cover Matrix has a cargo-area cover to keep its contents away from prying eyes. Impreza doesn’t come with a cover, so cargo is visible to passers-by.
TOyOTA vALueMatrix shows typical Toyota value, so you can expect it to be economical to own and operate.
Toyota care New retail buyers of Matrix get the Toyota Care complimentary scheduled maintenance program at no extra cost. Subaru doesn’t offer a similar program.
smartchoice award winner for 2011 IntelliChoice awarded 2011 Matrix its SmartChoice award in two categories. Impreza didn’t win any SmartChoice awards.

For 2012, Subaru redesigned the Impreza. In an unusual move, the company downsized the engine from 2.5-liters to 2.0-liters even as it kept the company’s signature horizontally opposed (“Boxer”) layout. In concert with the overall redesign, there’s now an expanded range of grades (up from two to five) to appeal to more shoppers.
This Edge focuses on the mainstream hatchbacks that compete with Matrix; it doesn’t include Impreza sedan or the sport-specialty WRX grades.
Here are some of the major features of the Impreza hatchback range.

Lower emissions
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) rates Impreza a low-emissions vehicle, which sounds great. But Matrix is an ultra-low-emissions vehicle, meaning it produces much lower levels of some forms of emissions compared with other vehicles in the same model year.
Larger wheels
Matrix rides on 16-inch wheels, larger than Impreza’s 15-inch wheels. Matrix’s wheels are also wider, to hold bigger tires. Those larger tires put a larger contact patch on the road, contributing to a solid, planted feeling. And, they look better, too.

More inputs
Just about everyone carries an MP3 player or smartphone these days, so it’s good to know the Matrix audio system includes an AUX input for connecting these devices. Impreza audio doesn’t offer this flexibility.
Steering wheel controls
Another audio convenience found on Matrix is steering-wheel-mounted controls for the audio system. These allow the driver to perform certain tasks without taking hands off the wheel. Again, Impreza audio doesn’t offer this flexibility.

rear door bins
Rear-seat passengers in Matrix have the convenience of door bins to hold the stuff that can accumulate on road trips. Impreza rear-seat passengers have to find some other place to put their things because there are no rear door bins.
Cargo-friendly flooring
For owners who haul cargo or pets, the hard surface of Matrix’s cargo area may stand up to wear and tear better than the carpeted surface of Impreza. Plus, it’s likely to be easier to clean than carpet after a minor spill or leak.

2010 matrixThe 2010 Matrix blends the functionality of an SUV and the style, image and performance of a sports car with the affordability of a subcompact sedan – all in one fun-to-drive vehicle.
And it doesn’t stop there. It also delivers impressive fuel economy ratings* as well as a high level of standard safety features. All models include Vehicle Stability Control† with integrated Traction Control, Anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist†, front side-impact airbags†, front and rear side curtain airbags†, front active headrests† and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System†.
Add in a compact exterior and surprisingly roomy interior, and you’ve got the 2010 Matrix – a crossover utility vehicle that may have the body of a five-door hatch, but comes with the soul of a two-door sports car.

Surprising versatility The Matrix interior offers spacious seating for five as well as unexpected cargo-
carrying capability. With up to 94 cu.-ft. of interior volume and generous rear leg
room, passengers have plenty of room to spread out and relax. Hauling cargo is no
problem either, with nearly 20 cu.-ft. of cargo space† behind the second row seats,
with an easy clean, non-slip cargo floor and tie-down hooks to keep items secure. To
triple the amount of cargo room, the second row seatbacks fold down to provide over
60 cu.-ft. of cargo space†. And the fold-flat front passenger seat on S and XRS trims
creates even more room for those extra-long, bulky items.
outstanding fuel efficiency Matrix covers a lot of ground with each gallon of gas, with an EPA estimated 26/32/28
MPG rating (city/hwy/combined) for manual transmission models and 25/31/28 MPG for
the automatic transmission model powered by a 1.8-liter engine*.
Typical Toyota value Owners can count on solid all-around value from their Matrix. Its low cost to own and
operate earned the IntelliChoice “SmartChoice for Ownership Costs” award in its class1.
And all the while, owners can be assured they made good choice, as Matrix was named
as “Best Resale Value” in its class2.Intriguing list of equipment choices
Matrix offers a lengthy list of choices, beginning with three trims: Matrix, S and XRS.
The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine on Matrix trims provides 132 horsepower, while the
2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine on S and XRS trims delivers 158 horsepower. And the
choices continue. All-Wheel Drive comes with the S AWD. All-independent sport
suspension is part of XRS. Navigation systems are available on S and XRS and XM
Satellite Radio† with NavTraffic®† is available on all models. JBL® premium audio with
Bluetooth®† technology is available on S and XRS – the choices go on and on.
Comprehensive safety features Drivers and passengers will feel secure with the long list of standard safety features
found on Matrix. All models include Toyota’s Star Safety System™: Vehicle Stability
Control†, Traction Control with OFF switch, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-
force Distribution and Brake Assist†. Also standard are driver and front passenger
dual-stage advanced airbags† with front passenger Occupant Classification System†,
driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags†, front and rear side curtain
airbags†, front active headrests† and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System†.
