2012 Matrix vs. 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring
Top Matrix Advantages Over Elantra Touring
The 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring has a couple of things going for it. It has a low starting price, and it has brand buzz. Together, those things create a perception that a buyer can get a car just as good as a Toyota and still save money. But is that true?
For the 2012 Toyota Matrix, value goes beyond the MSRP and how many cupholders are included. Toyota value is about what really matters to buyers: things like quality, durability, reliability and safety. This Edge focuses on Matrix’s value story to show that value is more than just a window sticker.
Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.
COMfOrT And COnvEniEnCEMatrix excels with room and usability features that make it more versatile and practical than Elantra Touring. And isn’t that the value of a small wagon?
Cargo-friendly load floor Matrix includes a hard, non-absorbent cargo floor that helps make it easy to slide cargo in and out. Elantra Touring uses carpet, which can be ripped or soiled.
More front head room Matrix offers generous front head room. Taller drivers may find it easier to get comfortable in a Matrix than in Elantra Touring.
Standard cruise control Matrix is a well-equipped car, and it includes standard cruise control. Elantra Touring charges extra for cruise control on its GLS grade.
TOyOTA rEASSurAnCEThere’s value in knowing the Toyota family stands behind Matrix, with parts and service available just about everywhere. And don’t forget the value of Toyota Care.
Toyota Care A new Matrix comes with the Toyota Care no-cost scheduled-maintenance plan. Elantra Touring owners pay for scheduled maintenance.
Larger dealer network Toyota’s larger dealer network means that parts and service are available practically anywhere the owner drives. Hyundai has a much smaller network.
TOyOTA SAfETy And SECuriTyMatrix has received top marks in some safety tests, has some of the latest safety features, and helps keep your cargo secure.
Highest iiHS ratings The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded Matrix its highest possible rating for both frontal and side-impact protection.
Star Safety System™ with Smart Stop Technology Matrix includes the Star Safety System with Smart Stop Technology brake override feature. Elantra Touring does not include a similar override feature.
Cargo-area cover Matrix includes a standard cargo area cover to hide valuables. Elantra Touring GLS charges extra for something similar.
rECOgnizEd fOr vALuEThe purchase price is the beginning of the value story, but not the end. When considered as a continuing investment, Matrix outruns Elantra Touring.
An excellent value IntelliChoice.com recognized Matrix as an “Excellent Value.” Elantra Touring didn’t rate as high.
great retained value IntelliChoice also recognized Matrix for holding its value over time, a big factor in determining total value.

Though the Elantra sedan was redesigned for 2011, the Elantra Touring remains a carryover. For 2012, it’s offered in two grades. The Hyundai is FWD only, which opens the opportunity to offer Matrix AWD to shoppers who would benefit from the extra traction.
Here are some of the major features of the Elantra Touring range.

Highest IIHS ratings
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded Matrix the highest possible frontal- and side-crash ratings in its class.1 Elantra Touring wasn’t tested, so no one knows how it would score. Matrix offers confidence today.

an excellent value
IntelliChoice, an independent research company, crunched the numbers and awarded Matrix its highest possible rating, calling it an “Excellent Value.”2 Elantra Touring, despite its lower price, earned only “Average” for value.

Star Safety System with Smart Stop Technology
Elantra Touring puts in a good showing by including the technologies in the Star Safety System, but Matrix goes further by including the Smart Stop Technology brake override feature. The Hyundai doesn’t include a brake override feature.

Great retained value
The less a car depreciates, the better the owner’s investment is protected. Matrix won an IntelliChoice award for high retained value.3 Elantra Touring, despite its lower initial cost, didn’t hold its value well enough to win this award.
Cargo area cover
Matrix’s standard folding cargo area cover helps keep your cargo secure from prying eyes. On Elantra GLS, the only way to get a cover is through an expensive option package.

Cargo-friendly load floor
Small wagons are great for carrying things, but not so great if the cargo rips or soils the carpet. That’s why Matrix uses a hard, non-absorbent load floor that cleans easily. Elantra Touring uses carpet, which could be much harder to maintain.

More front head room
Taller drivers will especially appreciate that Matrix has more front head room than Elantra Touring. This can help drivers find a comfortable position.

Standard cruise control
It seems like just about every car today has standard cruise control. Matrix does, but Elantra Touring GLS does not. For standard cruise control, Elantra Touring buyers have to move up to the SE grade.

Toyota Care
Like all new Toyotas, Matrix comes with Toyota Care, which includes complimentary factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.4 This could be a significant savings over the years. Hyundai does not offer a complimentary maintenance plan for Elantra.

Larger dealer network
No matter where you drive in this country, there’s probably a Toyota dealership close by with the accessories you want and the parts and service your car needs. Hyundai’s smaller dealer network may not be as convenient in some locations.

2010 matrixThe 2010 Matrix blends the functionality of an SUV and the style, image and performance of a sports car with the affordability of a subcompact sedan – all in one fun-to-drive vehicle.
And it doesn’t stop there. It also delivers impressive fuel economy ratings* as well as a high level of standard safety features. All models include Vehicle Stability Control† with integrated Traction Control, Anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist†, front side-impact airbags†, front and rear side curtain airbags†, front active headrests† and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System†.
Add in a compact exterior and surprisingly roomy interior, and you’ve got the 2010 Matrix – a crossover utility vehicle that may have the body of a five-door hatch, but comes with the soul of a two-door sports car.

Surprising versatility The Matrix interior offers spacious seating for five as well as unexpected cargo-
carrying capability. With up to 94 cu.-ft. of interior volume and generous rear leg
room, passengers have plenty of room to spread out and relax. Hauling cargo is no
problem either, with nearly 20 cu.-ft. of cargo space† behind the second row seats,
with an easy clean, non-slip cargo floor and tie-down hooks to keep items secure. To
triple the amount of cargo room, the second row seatbacks fold down to provide over
60 cu.-ft. of cargo space†. And the fold-flat front passenger seat on S and XRS trims
creates even more room for those extra-long, bulky items.
outstanding fuel efficiency Matrix covers a lot of ground with each gallon of gas, with an EPA estimated 26/32/28
MPG rating (city/hwy/combined) for manual transmission models and 25/31/28 MPG for
the automatic transmission model powered by a 1.8-liter engine*.
Typical Toyota value Owners can count on solid all-around value from their Matrix. Its low cost to own and
operate earned the IntelliChoice “SmartChoice for Ownership Costs” award in its class1.
And all the while, owners can be assured they made good choice, as Matrix was named
as “Best Resale Value” in its class2.Intriguing list of equipment choices
Matrix offers a lengthy list of choices, beginning with three trims: Matrix, S and XRS.
The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine on Matrix trims provides 132 horsepower, while the
2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine on S and XRS trims delivers 158 horsepower. And the
choices continue. All-Wheel Drive comes with the S AWD. All-independent sport
suspension is part of XRS. Navigation systems are available on S and XRS and XM
Satellite Radio† with NavTraffic®† is available on all models. JBL® premium audio with
Bluetooth®† technology is available on S and XRS – the choices go on and on.
Comprehensive safety features Drivers and passengers will feel secure with the long list of standard safety features
found on Matrix. All models include Toyota’s Star Safety System™: Vehicle Stability
Control†, Traction Control with OFF switch, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-
force Distribution and Brake Assist†. Also standard are driver and front passenger
dual-stage advanced airbags† with front passenger Occupant Classification System†,
driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags†, front and rear side curtain
airbags†, front active headrests† and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System†.
