INTRODUCTION

A compressed earth block (CEB), also known as a pressed earth block or a compressed soil block, is a building material made primarily from damp soil compressed at high pressure to form blocks.

Compressed earth blocks use a mechanical press to form blocks out of an appropriate mix of fairly dry inorganic subsoil, non-expansive clay and aggregate.

If the blocks are stabilized with a chemical binder such as Portland cement they are called compressed stabilized earth block(CSEB) stabilized earth block(SEB).

Typically, around 3,000 psi (21 MPa) is applied in compression, and the original soil volume is reduced by about half.

Procedure for Making CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks) Collected the soil sample. Test for soil classification. Various mixing of ingredients/stabilizers with clay soil

and sand varies in percentage of mixing. The various mixes are placed in the proposed brick

mold. The mold is compressed in a process (manually

compress). Then it is dried for 28 days. Strength determination on UTM/CTM.

Soil identification can be performed with sensitive analyses.The main points were examined as: Grain size distribution to know quality of each

grain size. Plasticity characteristics to know the quality and

propertiesof each of the binders.

Sample Details : Red Earth Plastic Limit =56% Liquid Limit=66% Plasticity Index = 10 =Slightly plastic LI= 1, hence the remoulded soil is at the liquid

limit and ithas un-drained shear strength of about 2KPa.

Soil stabilisation Many stabilizers can be used. Cement and lime

are the most common ones. The selection of a stabilizer will depend upon

the soil quality and the project requirements. Cement will be preferable for sandy soils

and to achieve quickly a higher strength. Lime will be rather used for very clayey

soil,but will take a longer timetoharden and to give strong blocksThe average stabilizer proportion is rather low:

COST EFFECTIVENESS CSEB are most the time cheaper than fired bricks. This will vary from place to place and specially according

to the cement cost. The cost break up of a 5 % stabilized block would depend

on the local context. It would be within these figures, for manual equipment with an AURAM press 3000:

Labour: 20 - 25 % Soil & sand: 20 - 25% Cement: 40 - 60 % Equipment: 3 - 5 % The strength of a block is related to the level of

compression and to the quantity of stabiliser

This implies that to reduce the cost of a block one should try to reduce the quantity of cement but not the cost of the labour with unskilled people.

One should also not cut down the cost of the press with cheap quality machines, which would not last and would not give strong blocks.

Conclusion CSEBs are eco-friendly and as these blocks are

un-burnt products, during production no coal or burningmaterial is needed. So, it does not produce any harmfulgases during production.

Without utilization of stabilizer, the strength of CSEBobtained is very less or negligible. So, mixing of stabilizerwith sand and clay in CSEB is must.
