  • What is a Musket?

    A musket is a long firearm, which can be handled in the field by oneshooter.Most early muskets had match locks actuated by a trigger bar underneaththe butt. Snaphance match locks were seldom in use. A relatively small number of muskets were equipped with wheel locks.Heavier muskets hat to be supported by forks held in the left hand by theshooter.

    An early, originally coloredpicture from an Englishhandwritten manuscript showsa shooter with a long,relatively light handheldstocked gun. Interesting is thefact that the shooter pressesthe butt of his weapon againsthis shoulder the same way asis done today.

The shooter in the middle isloading his musket with theramrod. The shooter on theleft can hold his wheel lockmusket with both hands andrelease the shot with thetrigger.

    The musketeer takes the musketinto his left hand, takes a powdershell from his bandoleer andopens it up. He pours the requiredamount of black powder into thebarrel of the musket. Than hetakes a bullet from the bulletpouch on his bandoleer, puts itinto the barrel and pushes it downwith the ramrod.
