BackgroundE-Connectivity -- Social Connection in an Online Classroom
Studies have been completed that identified the
need for…
Achieving a social connection (e-connectivity) with
their students (Slagter van Tryon & Bishop, 2006)
Increasing interactivity that “will help the students'
with their understanding” (Swanson, Hutkin, Babb,
& Howell, 2010, p. 121).
BackgroundWarm, Friendly, Honest, and Caring
Participants 100% agreed that faculty should be
warm, available to answer questions; hold students
to a high standard, remain flexible to adult learners;
honest in all of their interactions, and demonstrate
a caring nature in the online classroom” (Swanson,
Hutkin, Babb, & Howell, 2010, p. 119).
How does one achieve empathy and caring in the online classroom?

Anecdoctal Evidence
Here’s the evidence
Anecdotal Evidence
Students say…I gain from this type of feedback as I am a visual learner.Hearing your voice helps me to understand the concept that you are explaining.
Instructor Specialists say…
Providing this type of feedback is as though you are sitting with the student and guiding him or her through the paper. Great job!
Anyone care to do a study
on this?
