Benefits in Many Applications
• Proven commercial replacement of
mineral fibers in various applications – Improved particle suspension
– Crack resistance - ductility
– Contributes to water resistance
– Imparts Fine Texture (shorter finer grades) to Medium
/ Heavy Build (coarser, longer fibers)
– Viscosity control
![Page 7: Use of Fibrillated Fibers In Coatings Applications · Ingredient Weight (g) Dry Weight Fraction (%) Wet Weight Fraction (%) E380F Medium Length 1.9 2.75 1.35 Play Sand 67.2 97.25](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052101/603b576ad9c7a3124c7594f0/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Applications
• Roof Coatings
• Block Filler
• Textured Coatings
• Cement Coatings
• Putties
• Mastics
• Industrial Coatings

Where do fibers work?
• Water based systems – Latex emulsion
– Water reducible alkyds
– Waterborne PU
– Waterborne silicones
• Solvent based systems – Alkyds
– PU
– Epoxy
– Silicones
![Page 9: Use of Fibrillated Fibers In Coatings Applications · Ingredient Weight (g) Dry Weight Fraction (%) Wet Weight Fraction (%) E380F Medium Length 1.9 2.75 1.35 Play Sand 67.2 97.25](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052101/603b576ad9c7a3124c7594f0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Other Things to Consider
• High gloss
– If fiber is thicker than the film, it will dull the finish
• Clear Finishes
– May cause haze
• Water sensitive applications
– Fiber has <2% moisture
– Need to scavenge moisture in water sensitive
applications
![Page 10: Use of Fibrillated Fibers In Coatings Applications · Ingredient Weight (g) Dry Weight Fraction (%) Wet Weight Fraction (%) E380F Medium Length 1.9 2.75 1.35 Play Sand 67.2 97.25](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052101/603b576ad9c7a3124c7594f0/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

Since fibrillated fibers give viscosity by physical
means, might they be less prone to viscosity
drop when used in deeply tinted paints?

Processing Tips Fibrillated Fibers
• ADDED TO THE PRODUCT FIRST!
• Most applications use less than 2% loading by
weight for desired effect.
• Fibers are robust and do not degrade under high
speed dispersion shear
• Fine particle grades are used when a more
smooth surface is desired.
• Medium to course grades are used when more
of a textured surface is desired. Usually
brushed and/or roll applied, but can be sprayed
through nozzles if no screen is used.
![Page 36: Use of Fibrillated Fibers In Coatings Applications · Ingredient Weight (g) Dry Weight Fraction (%) Wet Weight Fraction (%) E380F Medium Length 1.9 2.75 1.35 Play Sand 67.2 97.25](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052101/603b576ad9c7a3124c7594f0/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Treated or Untreated??
• Utilize treated grades in water based systems
• Use untreated grades in solvent based systems
![Page 37: Use of Fibrillated Fibers In Coatings Applications · Ingredient Weight (g) Dry Weight Fraction (%) Wet Weight Fraction (%) E380F Medium Length 1.9 2.75 1.35 Play Sand 67.2 97.25](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052101/603b576ad9c7a3124c7594f0/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
