• Illustrations have played a major role in the technical information industry since day 1.

• Their importance or focus can vary form one standard to another.

• In Aerospace and Defense they are a critical component of almost every publication

• Historically they have been expensive to produce, and represent a significant proportion of spend on a suite of technical publications

Value of Conventional, Fully Detailed, 2D Drawing

– Time Consuming to Create

– Duplicated Work

– Change control

– Error Prone – created dimensions

– Not easily viewed Full Size on computer Screen or reduce to 8½ by 11 paper for enterprise

– People still have to “visualize” 3D model in minds eye (usually only one isometric view)

• The better and faster that people can understand technical information

• The quicker, more accurate, and less expensive their response will be

– Human Readable

– Standard Format

– Provides All Information

Pros/Cons of 3D – Why do it?

– Require special tools/skills to create

– Not good for print

– Require plug ins to run in web browser

– File size

– Aids comprehension

– Versatile

• Provides All Information in one package

• Allows for bundling of Figures/Views in a single graphic object

– Can be re purposed for training

– Direct tie back to source CAD information/BoM data

• For illustrations that have CAD source there are tools and processes to generate the 2D Isometric and the 3D interactive illustration from the same source file.

A different approach - why not do both?

• S1000D enables the integration of 3D illustrations via the multimedia object model in the XML schema

• This provides authors a way of referencing lightweight versions (Viewables) of CAD models for use in service procedures and training courses

• Including these object types in this way is vendor/software neutral and 100% specification compliant.

People may not realize this has been possible since issue 3-0

Implementing 3D in S1000D IPC use case

• Improves authoring efficiency

– Leverages eBOM/mBOM and 3D designs to

generate interactive service part information and

illustrations

– Inherits product options and variants from the

design

– Automatic hot spotting of content

– Easy configuration management

• Increases End-User Productivity

– 3D interactive delivery to simplify the

identification of required parts

– Easy to Find, Understand and Use needed

information

• What are my illustration source files? (i.e. do I have CAD source)

• What amount of the product is digitally modelled?

• Is 3D adding value in this instance (types of procedures etc)

• Am I deploying online/offline?

• Customer infrastructure and bandwidth

• Customer medium (Tablet, PC, Phone, PDF, Paper)

• Customer IT – Browser + OS Support

• Tools, processes, Training

Things to consider when deciding on use of 3D

• Fusing the digital world with the physical – 3D Viewables have a pivotal role to play in AR.

Where do we go next? Augmented Reality (AR) and the digital twin
