Perform and interpret a variety of traditional and contemporary choral works with appropriate performance practice and artistic expression 2. Sing with proper breath connection, forward placement, released tone, appropriate phrasing, and clear diction 3. Build aural skills by analyzing and evaluating choral performances/recordings by University Singers and other ensembles 4. Discover and value the effect that building a cohesive performing ensemble provides Class Schedule Chamber Choir, SMUS132, is MWF from 1:00–1:50 in HPAC 101. Expectations 1. Membership in this ensemble is for the entire semester, including all concerts. 2. Each member is responsible for learning his music outside of class. 3. Music for all concerts must be memorized. Returning Materials 1. Your registration at USC Upstate for future semesters may be denied and/or your university grades may be withheld and/or your grade in this class may be lowered as a result of the following:  Failure to return music by announced deadline, failure to pay for lost/ damaged music by announced deadline and failure to pay any other fees by announced deadline.

Course Policies 1. Bring your music and a pencil to every rehearsal.2. Be attentive during rehearsal—turn off all cell phones3. Talking during the rehearsal is very disruptive and

rude—please refrain from talking.4. Exhibit good posture and the desire to demonstrate

healthy vocal technique.5. Exhibit a positive attitude in the choral rehearsal

room—University Singers is a no negativity zone.6. Be respectful of each other and the conductor; we are

here working toward a common goal—please be supportive!

7. Be prepared for all rehearsals, especially when given specific score markings in advance.

8. If a student is consistently unprepared for part checks, this can lower their grade.

9. Demonstrate leadership and a desire to grow as a musician.

10.Find ways to connect to the music in order to be expressive in rehearsal and performance.

Absence Policies & Grading1. This course is a university level select performance

ensemble. Therefore, a significant portion of the student's grade is dependent upon rehearsal and performance attendance, punctuality, and attitude.  In order to maintain the high standards established by this select choral ensemble, it is very important

that you attend daily rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances.

2. You are encouraged to plan ahead so you do not exceed three absences. Absences after the second will only be excused in the event of (1) extended illness with a doctor’s verification, (2) a death in the immediate family, or (3) a university-approved institutional given five days in advance.  Please contact Dr. Friddle by voice mail, text message, (864-633-7997) or e-mail by 12:00 pm if you are unable to attend a rehearsal. Notification of an absence after the rehearsal will automatically be unexcused.  

3. Three unexcused tardies equals one absence.4. Your third unexcused absence will lower your grade

by one full letter. Each absence after the fourth will lower the final grade by another letter.

Excused Absences 1. Institutional excuses given five days in advance. 2. Extended illness with doctor's verification. 3. Death in the immediate family. 4. Religious holidays. Each student shall, upon notifying his/her instructor in writing during the first week of classes, be excused from class to observe a religious holy day of his/her faith.

Syllabus Changes Instructor reserves the right to change syllabus.
