Basic concept of the BMC

● BMC ( Baseboard Management Controller ) is a low-power chipset for system monitoring/management/control

● Most of servers (mid/high level servers) would contain at least one BMC for system mamagement

– System interface

– IPM device

– SEL interface

– Event generator

– SDR repository interface

– IPMB interface

– IPMB event receiver

– Private bus controller

– FRU inventory

– Initialization agent

– Watchdog timer

– Sensors

– PCI Mgmt. bus interface

– LAN messaging/alerting

– Serial messaging

– Bridging support

– PEF/Alert policies

● BMC need to contain below function:

Console redirection (iKVM)

● We'll take Dell PowerEdge R730 13G as an example--

Monitor, system management, remote control

● We could use iDRAC webGUI to monitor the system status/healty and check log if there's any critical event occurred

● Use ipmitool to implement basic chassis control : remote power off/on/cycle/reset

● BMC would be up even if the whold SUT is power off status (not AC off)
