AER still available for emergency leave for Soldiers & their families

As a Headquarters AER exception to policy during the current Government shutdown, AER will pay for the purchase of the airline ticket(s) for a Soldier and eligible dependents to travel on emergency leave between authorized locations as outlined in the JFTR. Funds to purchase the ticket(s) will be issued as a Grant. If the Soldier needs additional travel or other assistance, it is the AERO's discretion to provide assistance as either a loan, grant, or both based on the AERO's analysis of the Soldier's financial situation. To inquire about AER, call ACS at DSN 476-2650, CIV 09662-83-2650. Tomorrow will be a German Holiday and Service Members and Family Members will have to call the Red Cross since the ACS in Vilseck will be closed. The stateside number is 001-877-272-7337 (24/7) and they can use the Red Cross on Rose Barracks or Tower Barracks during business hours to initiate the call. This exception to policy is effective immediately and ends once the Government shutdown is over or otherwise rescinded. Use STAT Code GSD in Samaritan and STAT Code Govt Shutdown in netFORUM.

However…

Army Emergency Relief (AER) down for system upgrades 11-15 Oct: Processing Army Emergency Relief (AER) at ACS will be unavailable from 11-15 Oct to field a new system.

The local AER office will be available to assist Soldiers and their families in the preparation of their requests for assistance through the American Red Cross in the USA at 1-877-272-7337.

It’s CFC-O time again… Now-15 Nov: The 2013 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Europe (CFC-O) is starting again. CFC allows

members of the community to donate to organizations and give to charitable organizations or give back to the community. Whether protecting the environment, honoring military veterans, advancing medical research, aiding refugees or providing job training to the homeless, the CFC-O has something for everyone. Bulk Trash Pickup 21 Oct: Vilseck, Schlicht, Freihung, Sorghof (leased housing only)

22 Oct: Auerbach & Hahnbach (leased housing only) 22 Oct: Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks on post 28 Oct: Mantel and Steinfels 4 Nov: Netzaberg & City Eschenbach (North of B 470 & South of B 470) Trash must be curbside, in front of your home. Bulk Trash has to be out on curbside NLT 6 a.m. Pick-up is provided by contractors of the County Neustadt. What will be picked up? Everything, that is too big or too heavy to go into the normal refuse container, such as: Furniture, mattresses, carpets, washing machines, dryers, radios, TVs, ovens, stoves, bicycles, strollers, and other items which cannot be dismantled, torn or broken down to a size that would fit in the regular refuse container. Each single item should be no larger than 80x40x32 inches and should not be heavier than 110 lb. Bulk trash consisting of metal (i.e. bicycles, washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) and electronic equipment (such as large appliances, small appliances, cooling devices, information & telecommunications including entertainment equipment) should be put out separately next to the normal bulk trash. What will not be picked up?

- Normal refuse, recyclable material, Yard waste like cut grass, branches, etc... - Hazardous waste - Tires, car parts, batteries, wrecked cars, motorcycles - Doors and windows (with or without glass), laminated floor, rouleaus - Construction debris - Night storage heaters

Pick ups will be performed in three steps: 1. Combustible material: like upholstered furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc... 2. Electronic equipment: i.e. TV, PC, printer, scanner, radio, VCR, DVD player, monitor, vacuum cleaner, refrigerators and freezers (no permission sticker required anymore), etc… together with Household Metal items: i.e. bicycles, ironing boards, washer, dryer, dishwasher, stoves (oil stoves and oil barrels must be totally emptied) etc… 3. Salvageable wooden furniture: (i.e. bed frame, wardrobe, chair, table, etc….) Smaller electronic appliances (i.e. hairdryer, toothbrush, telephones, drilling machine etc.) should be brought to the drop off point “Company Bergler” in Weiherhammer, Etzenrichter Str. 2, Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. hour, CIV 09605-92090. Flu shots Now – 29 Nov: Health clinics in Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks have started taking walk-ins for the shot and

nasal spray. Vaccinations will be administered to family members, HQDA civilians, and retirees at the Tower and Rose Barracks Health Clinics 8-11 a.m. Monday-Friday and 1-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday. DoDDS students will receive vaccinations at their respective schools. Students unable to receive vaccinations at their respective schools may be seen at their community health clinic on a case by case basis. Soldiers on Tower Barracks will receive their immunizations during first formations. Unit POCs should contact the Grafenwoehr Health Clinic Medical Readiness NCO, SSG Antonio, at 475-6142 to coordinate for immunizations. Soldiers on Rose Barracks will receive their immunizations from the Soldier Centered Medical Home (BLDG 701) starting on 2 Oct.

Fire Prevention Week Now-12 Oct: Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection

Association (NFPA). So, reduce fire hazards and “keep and eye on what your fry.” Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room, turn off the stove.

When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer.

Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging).

Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove.

If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. If in doubt, get out of the home and call the fire department

Always keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan (make sure you are wearing the oven mitt). Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. Never pour water on a grease fire. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department.

If an oven fire starts, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and

Women, Infants, and Children Overseas Program (WIC) The DoD offers the WIC Overseas Program to eligible participants living overseas. The program provides you and your family with several important benefits: nutritious food, tips on how to prepare balanced meals, nutrition and health screenings, and access to other resources that help you and your family lead healthier lives. The program is available to eligible participants living overseas, including: civilian employees, DoD contractors, military members and their family. If you or your family member is pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding an infant, or a child up to five years of age, please call our Tower Barracks WIC office in Bldg 213 for an eligibility screening, DSN 475-6821 or CIV 09641-83-6821. Quarterly Security Training: TARP, SETA, OPSEC & Antiterrorism L.1 The United States Army Garrison Bavaria (Antiterrorism and Security Divisions) along with the 66th Military Intelligence Group and JMTC Intelligence and Security, will be conducting the quarterly Community Security Awareness Training consisting of the Threat Awareness and Reporting Program (TARP), Security Education Training Awareness (SETA), Operation Security (OPSEC), and Anti-terrorism Level 1 Refresher Training. 1st Quarter FY14 Community Security Awareness Training Schedule:

Retiree Appreciation Day

25 Oct: The annual Retiree Appreciation Day will come to USAG Bavaria on 25 Oct. In Tower Barracks Bldg. 244 from 8

a.m.-3 p.m., retirees and family members will have the chance to renew ID cards, meet with JAG officers, receive medical checkups, get new information, make contacts and more.

AFAP Conference 13-14 Nov: The Army Family Action Plan Conference brings together Soldiers, family members and civilians to discuss

Rose Barracks Burger King to cut down opening hours Starting 3 Nov: Until the return of 2CR, the Burger King in Rose Barracks will be closed on Sundays and will closed at

7 p.m. rather than 6 p.m. in the evenings, Monday-Saturday. Here are their new operating hours: Monday-Friday: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday: 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sundays: closed.

Exchange Offers Resources, Assistance for PCSing Service Members The Army & Air Force Exchange Service is making the PCS transition more affordable service members. The Exchange’s “PCS Headquarters” website, located at www.shopmyexchange.com, features several resources to help Soldiers and Airmen make a move as stress-free as possible. The site’s Get Connected function gives families a preview of local TV, Internet and telephone services available at their new installations. PCS Headquarters also connects families with Military OneSource, a place to find resources including childcare, personal finance, emotional support during deployments and relocation services. In addition, Military Homefront’s “Plan My Move” provides families with information on entitlements and benefits, checklists and planning tools, as well as information on employment and education. PCS Headquarters also offers downloadable, region-specific coupon books.

The Exchange Supports Healthy Kids in Lunch Program The Exchange supports the Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act by providing our school-aged children reduced fat foods. The Exchange will be providing healthier milk choices this coming school year in observance of the USDA’s implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which emphasizes the improvement of child nutrition as its focal point. The USDA has made sweeping changes in the nutritional quality of school meals to further reduce fat, sodium, and added sugars.

Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. The training you receive will last you a lifetime and

Bavaria Community and Spouses' Club events Go to their Facebook page for upcoming events and club news. Over the summer the Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses Club (GCSC) disbanded and turned over its assets to the Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC). The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club is undergoing a name change and will now be the Bavaria Community and Spouses Club (BCSC) which will serve our entire community including Tower Barracks and Rose Barracks.

Tuition Assistance suspended Due to the government shutdown, the Tuition Assistance (TA) program has been suspended. FAST Classes 24 Oct-6 Nov: FAST Classes are at the Rose Barracks Education Center, Bldg. 223, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The registration

period for these classes is from 02 Oct 13 until the last working day before the particular class begins. Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST) provides Soldiers with instruction in reading, mathematics, and language skills and is an excellent tool to prepare Soldiers to raise their GT score. This class is a 60-hour long course and is limited to twenty students. For more information please contact the Rose Barracks Education Center at DSN 476-2653/3292.

Army Education Centers – contract ends The current support services contract for Army Education Centers in Europe has ended. Unfortunately, the contract change-over will impact the delivery of education center support services in the following USAG Bavaria communities: Rose Barracks, Tower Barracks, Hohenfels, and Garmisch. PLEASE NOTE: evening college classes and office hours for local college representatives are NOT affected by this issue. Effective 23 Sept., the USAG Bavaria Army Education Centers will have reduced operational hours for general services until further notice. For Soldiers who are out processing or have other urgent matters, they can contact their local education center to schedule an appointment with the Education Services Officer or Specialist (Rose Barracks; 476-2753, Hohenfels, 466-2668). Appointments for DANTES, Army Personnel Tests, and other testing will potentially not be available until after Oct. 7. As an alternative for proctored college testing, check with the National Test Center (NTC) at

National Test Center (NTC) new hours University of Maryland University College-Europe’s National Test Center (NTC) is now open Monday-Friday 20 hrs/wk from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.! The NTC offers computer-based exams for college credit including CLEP, DSST, GMAT, IT certifications, and many other professional certification exams. VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarships

Deadline 1 Nov: The VFW has two scholarships available for high school and middle school students.

Students in 6-8th grade are eligible for the Patriot’s Pen scholarship. Forty-six applicants will win scholarships ranging from $500-5,000. This year’s essay theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” You can find the application guidelines and form here. High schoolers are eligible for a $30,000 scholarship and $1,000-16,000 scholarships. Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks. If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find. Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. The prosperous city provided the ideal basis for an active cultural and intellectual life and the arts: Even today numerous buildings, monuments and artworks still reflect its former importance. The guided tour through the Old Town offers information and insights on the castle, the fountains and wells, churches and art as well as the city itself past and present. Meet on Marktplatz, no prior booking required. The tours take place every day and cost 7 Euros per person. There are tours in German which start at 6 p.m., and also in English, starting at 7 p.m. If you click in the link and scroll down, you can watch a 5-minute promo clip for the executioner's tour (in English but with a lovely Franconian accent). The clip shows some interesting hidden places that you normally don't get to see. Every Wed. and Sat: 1:30 p.m.: Guided Tour of Regensburg, in English - "Experience a Historical City" In the course of this individually accented tour you get to know the Old City, with its patrician towered houses, the cathedral, the Old City Hall (all from the outside), the Stone Bridge and the Porta Praetoria. Closest free car parks are "Dultplatz" (Am Protzenweiher/ Oberpfalzbrücke); adjacent "Protzenweiher" (opposite Protzenweiher 27); neighbouring "Wöhrdstraße" (at Wöhrdstraße 18); and adjacent "Unterer Wöhrd" (Wöhrdstraße 60/62). There is also the "Donaumarkt" parking lot (Donaumarkt 1) which is "a walk across the bridge" closer than the "Wöhrdstraße" car park, but it's not free-of-charge, and it's blocked on Saturday mornings for the Regensburg produce market. From any of these car parks it's only a very short walk across one of the bridges. You can get a map of Regensburg's city center from the Tourist Info in the "Altes Rathaus" (old city hall) for free. Every Friday: 7 p.m. The Nuremberg Nightwatch Tour, in English - with the night watchwoman Re-live history through original, funny and exciting stories with the historian Dr. Ute Jaeger aka the night watchwoman. Fees are 9 Euros pp. Every Saturday: 1 p.m. Guided Tour of 97070 Würzburg in English Your stroll starts at the Falkenhaus (location of the Tourist Info, ph 0931-372-398) with its elaborate Rococo facade, followed by a visit to the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) featuring sandstone sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Other highlights include the historical town hall building and the Romanesque cathedral "St. Kilian". From the bridge Alte Mainbrücke, you can enjoy fantastic views of the fortress Marienberg, the pilgrimage church Käppele and the famous vineyards. Tour lasts around 1.5 hrs, tickets cost 6 Euros per adult. Between 7 May and 29 October, additional English tours are held every Friday at 1 p.m. Every Saturday: 2 p.m. Guided Tour in English of Albrecht Dürer's House in Nürnberg’s historical city center, Albrecht-Dürer-Straße 39 (in the pedestrian zone). Admission is 5 Euros (normal), 2.50. Euros (reduced) Famous painter Albrecht Dürer lived in Nürnberg (1471 – 1528) – you might know him best for his “Praying Hands” –, and his original residence in Nürnberg’s pretty city center has been converted to a museum. Every Saturday, an actress in historical gowns offers guided tours of the house in English, telling its history from the viewpoint of Dürer's wife Agnes. Every Saturday: 3 p.m. Guided Tour in English of the Church of St. Jacob's in 91541 Rothenburg. A public and free tour in English of the famous StJakobs-Kirche (church). You only pay the entrance fee for the church: 2 Euros for adults; 0.50 Euros for students, pupils; groups from 10 person: 1.50 Euros. No reservation necessary! Duration: ca. 45 minutes. Meeting Point: front row inside the church. Every Saturday: 8 p.m. Guided Tour in English with the Night-Watchman in 91541 Rothenburg on Marktplatz = Market Place. Take a walk back in time with the Night-watchman through the romantically-lit streets of Rothenburg. Meeting point is on Market Square, the tour lasts about 60 minutes. Fee is 7 Euros per person, payable in cash to the Night-watchman.
