From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ... My Dear Friends,

Last Sunday we commemorated the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Today we hear the Gospel in  which  John  the  Baptist  gives  the  solemn testimony about Jesus: “Behold the Lamb of God” and telling his disciples to follow Jesus “The Son of God.”  We  repeat  before  communion  that  same profession of faith done by the presider, adding the answer given by  the ROMAN OFFICER in professing total faith  in  Jesus’  power  to  heal  his  child  from  a  distance, without arriving at his house: “under my roof.”

The image of the lamb, in which the lamb was slain,  recalls the Passover freedom last meal of Israel in Egypt, and  the yearly  remembrance by  the  Jews of  the end of their  Egyp an  slavery  and  the  march  toward  the promised land.

Jesus  is  for  us  the  lamb  slaughtered  by  the  Roman soldiers,  so  that  we  may  enter  the  promised  land  of paradise. Let me repeat again what I wrote last Sunday.

Many  people  are  confused  about  the  Bap sm  of John, because we Catholics presume the following:

1. Jesus ins tuted the Sacrament of Bap sm; 2. Jesus did not need to be bap zed.  We  are  definitely  right  on  both  accounts.  So  what

was  the  Bap sm  of  John?  According  to  the  Gospel  of Ma hew (3:13‐14), John, the son of the priest Zechariah and  of  his  wife,  Elizabeth  (Luke  1),  started  preaching  a Bap sm of Repentance in prepara on for the coming of the  Messiah.  John  adopted  the  striking,  symbolic ceremony  of  Bap sm  to  impress  the  Jews  of  his  me, about  the  need  of  sorrow  for  their  transgressions  of Mosaic Law, and so powerfully introduced the Messianic awakening, preparing the way for Jesus’ preaching.

Also, the first Chris ans were puzzled by the fact that the sinless Lord needed to be “bap zed” or “cleansed” of His non‐existent sins. The first Chris ans, many of  them disciples of  John the Bap zer, did not grasp what  Jesus’ inten on  was,  and  the  biblical  scholars  have  debated long and hard on this subject.

It  is  apparent  to me  that  our  good  Lord  had many reasons to do so. I’m guessing now, but I think that first of  all  it  was  to  show  John  that  his  prophecy  of  the imminent  coming  of  the  Messiah  had  been  fulfilled  in Jesus. John saw the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus. Here we touch the Chris an dogma that Jesus was truly a man in which  the  invisible God  showed Himself  visibly  to  all people as a true human being; Jesus grew up in wisdom, age and knowledge of His own uniqueness as the vessel of God, and  so  the  Jewish man,  Jesus, had a glimpse at that moment of His unique des ny as Savior of Mankind, and as Son of God.

J 19, 2020 2 S O T

The second reason,  I guess, was to  let  John send all  his  disciples  to  follow  Jesus  from  then  on.  Shortly therea er,  John  was  imprisoned  and  was  martyred  by

the  incestuous  King  Herod.  I  can  think  also  of  a third reason, namely, that Jesus tried to  live a  life totally  in  synchrony  with  the  most  fervent Messianic  Jews of His  me, going  faithfully  to  the Synagogue,  and  accep ng  John’s  invita on  to  all Jews in preparing for the Messianic Era.  Let us remind ourselves today about our own

Bap sm and the promises made to Jesus on that day, usually through our parents and godparents; promises to put  Jesus  ahead  of  ourselves,  of  our  pride,  of  our pleasures  and  of  our  possessions.  Jesus is our Numero Uno, our Number One!

How sad I was to hear two ladies complaining a few weeks ago,  about  the St.  Paul passage  to  the Ephesians (Eph  5:21‐33),  of  the  call  for  wives  to  be  submissive  to their husbands. In my opinion, these two ladies made two mistakes: 1. the idea of putting feminine identity ahead of our  identity  with  Christ,  and  2.  a  very  common  one we Christians make,  which  is,  we  take  one  sentence  of  the Bible, isolating it from the rest of the Holy Scripture and guiding our lives according only to that sentence.

The Bible has to be taken in its totality. All passages rela ng  to  a  par cular  topic  have  to  be  compared with the  Biblical  passages  rela ng  to  such  topics,  and  only then can we find the true message of God for that topic, as  affirmed  by  the  Pope  Emeritus  Benedict  XIV,  in  his Apostolic Exhorta on, Verbum Domini.

The  same  Bible  that  exhorts  the  wives  to  be submissive, also says that the husband should follow the example of Christ; a husband is called to love his wife as Christ loves the Church,  and  Christ  died  for  the  Church, and  so,  therefore,  husbands  should  be  ready  to  die  for their wives ‐ never mind having to take out the garbage,  or not communica ng at the dinner table!

Prayer for Chris an Unity Week (January 18 ‐ 25) is celebrated in the Christian world to bring to full realization the prayer of  Jesus  to God  the Father: “May they all be one, as we are one, I in them and You in Me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that You sent Me.” (John 17: 22‐23). A  divided Christendom will bring derision of (and not conversion to) the Good News  of  Jesus. We,  your  clergy, wish  that  you parishioners of St. Martha will assist at Mass and receive Communion,  or  at  least  visit  the  Blessed  Sacrament  this week,  for  the  unity  of  all  Christians. We  have  four  daily Masses,  7:30,  8:30  a.m.,  Noon  and  5:30  p.m.;  plus  the Carosella Chapel where you can visit and pray  in  front of the Blessed Sacrament (during office hours 9 a.m. ‐ 4 p.m.) which  is  convenient  for  all  parishioners  and  those downtown workers, so that at least on one day during the

week you may pray or receive Jesus  in your heart  for the unity of all the baptized.

Wednesday, January 22 is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children,  and  when  we remember  in  a  particular  way  the  slaughter  of  the innocents  by  abortionists.  On Tuesday, January 21, we will host the Annual Prayer Walk for Life. Remember the Creator of Life who said: “I have seen before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. CHOOSE LIFE, then, that you and your descendants may live.” Thank you to all who are  walking  with  us  for  life  in  prayer  at  Planned Parenthood in Sarasota.

By the way, Jesus FORGIVES also the sin of abor on, so  if  you know that  someone has  le   the Church or  the Sacraments  because of  this  sin,  convince  them  to  go  to confession.  It  is  so  easy  to  go  and  feel  accepted  and embraced by God, and make up with that li le angel who is in Heaven now protec ng them and their children.

Wednesday, January 22, is the feast of St. Vincent Pallotti, the founder of the Society of Catholic  Apostolate,  colloquially  referred  to as “Pallottines” (priests, brothers, sisters,  lay associates).  St. Vincent was born  in 1795  in Rome,  Italy, where he died in 1850. Pope Pius XII declared

Vincent  “Blessed”  in  1950,  and  Pope  John  XXIII  declared him  “Saint”  in  1963.  St.  Vincent  was  an  innovator.  His studies  of  sacred  Scripture,  tradition  and  theology convinced  him  that  the  mission  and  responsibility  of spreading the faith was incumbent on all baptized people, lay  people  as  well  as  clergy.  To  carry  out  his  ideas,  he established the Society of the Catholic Apostolate.

Today, throughout the world, we Pallo nes number about 2,400 priests and brothers, some 4000 sisters and approximately 175,000 associate lay persons. The mission of our Society  is clear and simple: “The sanc fica on of all peoples and the spread of the Catholic faith, to be brought about primarily through the reunifica on of all Churches of the East and West.” Jesus’ prayer was: “that all may be one, Father, as you and I are one.”

As we celebrate the memory of this Roman priest, we are also, in a sense, celebra ng our standing as disciples, indeed as apostles, heeding the command of Jesus to “go and teach.” Fathers Patrick, Jan, Chris and I are happy to serve  you,  the  good  God’s  family  of  St.  Martha,  in reaching  the goal of becoming “perfect as our  Father  in heaven  is perfect.” We are happy to have  in our service the help of our clergy and religious, Father John; Deacons Bill, Bob, and Patrick; and Sister Cathy.

Catholic Schools Week is Monday, January 26 ‐ 31. Please pray for our school, the teachers and the children during Catholic Schools Week and always.

The annual Catholic Charities Ball will be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on Saturday, February 8, 2020. It will  be  hosted  by  Bishop  Frank  J.  Dewane,  and  all proceeds  from  the  event will  support  the  programs  of Catholic  Charities  in  Sarasota  and  Manatee  counties. For more information call 941‐355‐4680 ext. 301, email [email protected]  or  visit  www.catholiccharitiesdov.org.

Each week, St. Martha schedules Mass mes, weddings, funerals, nursing home visits, etc. by assigning a priest or deacon to each. We try and adhere to  these schedules, but  some mes because of  sickness, unexpected appointments or emergencies, changes must be  made.  We  hope  our  parishioners  understand  these circumstances can arise and accept other  clergy, not as subs tu ons, but opportuni es of God! Thank you.

We welcome all of you, winter visitors and residents. If you are new to our St. Martha, once you are se led  in  your  new  home,  if  you  wish,  call  on  a clergyman,  deacon  or  priest  to  bless  your  home  or condo,  so  that  a  guardian  angel  of  the  house  will  be protec ng you and your family. Contact anyone of them or call Sara Brinn at the office to arrange the blessing.

Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 19 de enero de 2020

Te voy a convertir en luz de las naciones, para que mi salvación llegue hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra. — Isaías 49:6b LLAMADOS A SER SANTOS

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ST. MARTHA LEGACY SOCIETY

The St. Martha Legacy Society which has been established to ensure the future support of the parish and our many ministries and to recognize and thank our generous legacy donors.

There are many ways to leave a legacy gift. St. Martha can be named as a beneficiary in your will, trust, life insurance policy, retirement account; or St. Martha can be named as a recipient of any financial or brokerage account with a POD designation. Endowments, charitable gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, and charitable remainder trusts are additional legacy options that can established for the benefit our parish. We will be pleased to answer your questions or direct you to an expert that can advise you for your specific situation.

It doesn’t take millions of dollars to leave a legacy gift and no gift is too small. Any contribution you make, combined with those of other parishioners, becomes a substantial amount. As our parishioners are the only source of funds to operate our parish and its ministries, legacy gifts are very critical to the future of St. Martha.

Parishioners that plan to leave a legacy gift will be inducted into the Legacy Society at Mass and your name will be engraved on the legacy tree. Legacy Society members will be invited to attend the appreciation event to be held every year in December. And upon joining our heavenly Father, legacy members will be remembered each and every year at a special Mass.

If you plan to remember St. Martha with a legacy gift, or have any questions about the Legacy Society, please contact Teressa McCoy in the Parish Office at 941-366-4210 or [email protected].
