Welcome to the Olympic Year! Now is the time to act on all of the plans and hard work that has been accomplished in the past to "get to the next level." 2003 was an incredible year with tremendous accomplishments at every level for USA Gynmastics. Now we must "build on the base" of all of the work that has been done in prior years to make certain that we are ready to leverage the myriad of opportunities that are available.

This is true whether you are an athlete, coach, administrator, club owner or judge. The Olympic year is full of opportunity, take out your goals and objectives from last year and see what you accomplished, and what is still on the list. If you don't have a list, make one and place it where you will see it every day. Set small realistic goals that you have control over. These are called Performance

Goals, because your performance determines whether or not they happen_ Try to avoid setting Outcome Goals because you will be focused on the end result rather than the steps you need to take to achieve the results that you desire .

Make a list of your three top priorities for the year and focus on those until they have been accomplished. Next meet with your staff or co-workers and make sure they understand your priorities for the year. This will ensure that everyone is working together to maximize effectiveness.

In the coming year, three of the priorities of USA Gymnastics are as follows:

1) Preparation of the Olympic Team. Each discipline at USA Gymnastics has a strategic plan that has been reviewed and updated by the Program Committee in conjunction with the National Team Coordinator and the National Team Coaches.

2) Education. Early in the first quarter of 2004, USA gymnastics will launch its online education program, The USA Gymnastics University. The first course to go "live" will be the safety certification course. This will increase the accessibility of becoming certified as the course will be available - 365/24/7.

3) Increased visibility in the mass media. 2004 will provide a number of unique opportunities to raise the visibility of the sport of gynmastics. From the launch of the international calendar with the VISA American Cup in New York City for the first time since 1984, to the u.s. Gymnastics Championships, Olympic Trials/Games and the post-Olympic Tour, USA Gymnastics will be ready with a pro-active strategy to maximize coverage and visibility.

Whatever your role in gymnastics, now is the time to maximize your potential for the Olympic Year. Good Luck with your planning and all of us here at USA Gymnastics look forward to working with you to help you achieve your goals.

Bob Colarossi

Page 12: USA Gymnastics - January/February 2004

Did you know four of the six members of the 2003 World Championships Gold Medal Team

were former TOPs team members? Can you guess who they are?

If you answered Courtney Kupets, Chellsie Memmel, Carly Patterson, and Tasha Schwikert then you're right!

TOPs stands for Talent Opportunity Program and was developed by USA Gymnastics in 1992 as a way of finding talented young gymnasts in order to identify them early and provide education to the gymnast and her coach. The program is definitely working with so many former TOPs gymnasts making World Championships teams.

According to USA Gyrrmastics Elite Program Manager Gary Warren, "It's exciting to watch these young TOPs gymnasts develop into amazing athletes and win medals at the international level. It shows the program is working and is headed in the right direction."

TOPs Regional testing took place throughout the summer of 2003 and approximately 2,500 gymnasts participated. From those who participated, the top athletes were named to the 7-8 year old National Team. Of the 9-11 year olds, 300 were invited to TOPs National Testing and 77 made the TOPs National Team. The National Testing was held in

Houston, Texas, Oct. 3-5 at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center.

At National Testing the gymnasts perform physical abilities tests including pull ups, leg lifts, flexibility, sprint, rope climb, vertical jump, push ups and press handstands as well as the required skills on each of the events including vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The scores are tallied and the top gymnasts in each age division were named to the TOPs National Team.

The National TOPs Camp was comprised of three days of educational opportunities for both the athlete and her coach on basics, sports science and general development of these talented young athletes, Dec. 6-10. USA Gymnastics' National Coaching staff, along with coaching support personnel and sport science professionals, conducted the camp. A second camp was held for 80 additional gymnasts, Dec. 10-14, but they paid for their own expenses.

During the TOPs National Camp, 2003 World ChampiOns Chellsie Menunel and Carly Patterson were named TOPs CoAthletes of the year. In addition Debbie Van Horn and Dr. Larry Nassar were awarded the Shirley Marshak Award.

The TOPs program has shown success over the last 12 years and continues to be a big part of the success of the USA women's program.

The National Coaches Workshop provides the opportuni ty for hands on development sessions w ith the athletes and for educa tion sessions fo r both coaches and parents. This "team" approach of working with athletes, coaches and parents is extremely important in providing fo r the needs of our athletes and fo r their future success. , 'm coming out of the closet. For a while it wasn't ok to say, so I hid it under the guise of simple sport psychology training. But now, the times are a changin' and it's become fashionable

to admit what's been true all along. I am a closet Eastern Philosophy junkie. It all started growing up with Kung fu, moving to the Karate Kid and the Dalai Lama. Although I learned a lot in my graduate programs, the truth is, most of my drills, workbooks, and presentations are based on the wisdom from the East. The Eastern philosophers are the masters of the mind, and in gymnastics, controlling the mind is just as important as controlling the body.

Thanks Phil Phil Jackson let the cat out of the bag with his book "Sacred Hoops." In this book, the former coach of the Chicago Bulls and current coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, shared how much of his Training style and techniques are grounded in Native American and Eastern philosophy. This best seller ignited the curiosity of athletes and coaches all over the United States. People began to ask, "Is there something we can learn from these guys?"

What is the Athlete Warrior? What is the Athlete Warrior? The Athlete Warrior is someone fully committed to sport and life. Someone willing to face every day and every workout with eyes open, heart open, and ready to push their body to the maximum. It is an athlete ready to do their sport with no regrets. An Athlete Warrior practices fearlessness. Fearlessness in facing adversity, pushing themselves, and being

a team leader. The Athlete Warrior does not back away from difficult situations. They are ready to face their sport and life with a big, full hearted ..... "Come on!"

Setting intention as an athlete is extremely important. Without setting intention, your life wanders around aimlessly without goal or direction. Intention is the motor that starts everything in motion. It is the all-important decision. It is the decision that you are going to be the best athlete you can be every time you walk out on the floor. Remember to set specific intention. Think of it like the laser beam for your life. The wider and unfocused your laser is, the less likely you are to hit your target. Laser-like intention helps you create a direct hit on your goals. Remember, the Warrior doesn't settle or make excuses. They make the commitment and decision to be all they can, and do what it takes to make that manifest.

Training nps for Principle One:

• Set a goal for each training session. Even if it's a small one. • Create a list of words describing the athlete you want to be this

season. Examples of words include, motivated, determined, confident, fearless, etc.

• Visualize or repeat verbally the correction you want to implement before the next turn.

• Review your goals throughout the season.

..

Page 29: USA Gymnastics - January/February 2004

'.

We know how important belief is. Think of two gymnasts walking out onto the floor for a competition. One believes she is able to hit four for four, the other questions her ability. You can tell the difference in these gymnasts simply by the way they look. One has her head down, looks nervous, and performs with hesitation. The other is confident, aggressive, and relaxed. The only difference is belief. The mind is the creator of all things. Negative thoughts are the destroyers of belief. Become aware of the way you talk to yourself and how that effects your mind and body. Be sure to do the drills, pressure sets, and numbers that are required to build belief. Act with confidence, even in times you don't believe it 100%. The old saying "fake it until you make it" is very applicable here. Sometimes "acting" the part, can create confidence in yourself when you feel doubtful.

Training TIps for Principle Two:

• Notice negative self-talk. Keep a strong hold on what you are saying to yourself.

• Practice "actor skills." Change your face, body, and energy level to create confidence.

• Express belief in your teammates. Remember what a powerful figure you are in the lives of your friends.

Awareness is about waking up. It's essential that the Athlete Warrior is aware at all times. Aware, alert and ready for action. No sleepwalking allowed here. The Athlete Warrior knows and understands what's happening both on the outside and the inside of your being. They know who they are, what they stand for, and what they are capable of. When the gymnast is aware, they can respond to all situations with efficiency, grace, speed, and skill. Without awareness, change is virtually impossible. Think about it in terms of a simple correction. If you cannot feel the difference you cannot make the change. The Athlete Warrior is aware of both the body and the mind. They are aware of thoughts, so they are able to change them. They are aware of their body, so they can improve technique. They are aware of how they come across to others, so they can build character.

Training TIps for Principle Three:

• Become more aware of who you are and what you do. • Notice your thoughts and feelings. • Really feel your body. Notice your body position,

What is that mystical place called "The Zone"? Some say it's magic, some say it's the place of total trust and non-thinking. One thing for certain, being in the Zone is being totally in the Present. One of the most destructive patterns of any gymnast is focusing too much attention in the past or the future, Focusing

on the past keeps a gymnast in the land of "what happened." "I can't believe that happened," "Why did that happen to me?", "last time I did that, it was a disaster." The past is over, there is nothing we can do to change it now, Gymnasts who stay in the past over-think and paralyze themselves from getting into the Zone. A gymnast focusing too much on the future, finds himself/herself stuck in "what if." "What if I make a mistake?", "What if I do the wrong thing?", and "What if I don' t win," are all thoughts of the future. No one knows what is going to happen in the future. A gymnast living in the land of "what if" is filled with worry and doubt. They may have a tendency to hold back or be over-cautious in their performance.

Athlete Warriors trust the Present. They know that the past is over and the future is theirs to create however they want. Th ey keep their mind focused on each element they are performing only using the past or the future for information and plarming. They have heightened awareness, noticing what is going on around them and responding in each moment appropriately. They are accurate in your perceptions, not clouded by the illusions of the past or fears of the future. Without the worries of past or future, Athlete Warriors perform with effortless confidence.

Training TIps for Principle Four:

• Focus on your breathing. It's the mind/body connector. • Notice when you are stuck in past or future thinking. • Use drills to pull your mind back to the present. • Let go of the past. Don' t use words that keep you stuck like

"always" and "never."

The mind is a thought factory. Running around like a crazy monkey, it creates thought after thought after thought. Taming the monkey-mind is essential to the Athlete Warrior. Are you a victim of your thoughts? Do you control your thoughts, or is it the other way around? Disciplining the mind is one of the most important lessons in becoming an Athlete Warrior. Disciplining the mind is not an easy task. It takes commitment, patience, and perseverance. Just as you pull your body back into proper alignment, you must work hard in order to pull your mind back into position for success. Many gymnasts allow themselves to become victims of their mind's irrational behavior. The Athlete Warrior is awake, aware, and in control of the stormy waves of the monkey-mind. They are committed to stopping negative thoughts.

Training TIps for Principle Five:

• Learn to differentiate between "tight mind" and "loose mind." • Use key words to anchor the mind during routines and skills. • Observe your thoughts without getting emotionally caught up

in them. • Find the lesson in every situation. Find the opportunity in the struggle. ~

Part two of this article will give you five more training tools in the development of the Athlete Warrior. In order to use these techniques, set aside a week for each one. Focus on it, practice it. Train your mind to become the champion you are. •

Senior Program Director, Ann Sims says, "What a great opportunity for these athletes and their families to participate in an event with a high level of competition and get to see other countries, too."

Athletes who are Level 10 or above are eligible to contend for places on the team. In 2003, the team was chosen based on places from National Championships in Sacramento, Calif. and the World Age-Group Team Trial at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Sims says of the competition, "We had a great group of young athletes who learned a lot from this international experience. We have found that most of our eventual World Championships team members come from previous World Age-Group competitors."

The current Junior Olympic Women's routines have been used for the past seven years and will continue to be used through June 2005. Many have asked about the upcoming new compulsOly routines and the timing of which they will be unveiled so USA Gymnastics asked the experts. Connie Maloney, the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Program Manager, and Tom Koll, the National Junior Olympic Committee Chair, answered our questions about the new cycle of routines. Here's what they had to say:

Q: What's happening with the new, upcoming compulsory routines?

A: Routines and supplementary skills were filmed in early November 2003. The JO Committee met Dec. 5-7, 2003, to compare the video to the text. We are continually working on refinement of the text and the illustrations.

Q: When will the next compulsories be unveiled?

A: Master Compulsory workshops will be conducted in early June 2005. The exact dates and places are: June 2-5, 2005 in Louisville, Kentucky, and the second one will be held at the Reno, Nevada, Hilton on June 9-12, 2005. In addition, there will be a Women's Technical Symposium held on Saturday evening and Sunday at each of these locations to provide information on the new ru les for Levels 7-10.

Q: When will the next compulsories actually begin in competition? In other words, when will the gymnasts be expected to perform these new compulsory routines?

A: The new compulsories will be in effect August 1, 2005, and will be used for eight years, finishing in July of 2013.

Q: Do judges need to re-certify with the new routines or can they just continue to judge at their current level? What's involved?

A: All judges will need to retest for the new routines. They will also need to recertify for Optionals, as a new JO Code of Points will be presented at the same time as well.

Q: What basic changes have occurred with the new routines? New emphasis?

A: The big difference is shorter, user-friendly routines for Level 1-4 to provide an easier entry-level into competition.

Q: Is there is list of skills that we can begin to work on with our gymnasts prior to learning the routines?

A: Yes, go to usa-gymnastics.org then click on Women, then click on Junior Olympic, and you'll see Women's Program: Proposed J.O. Elements for 2005-2013.

Q: Tell us about the new music selection and having a different theme for each routine.

A: One of the comments in the past has been that the music all sounds the same. To try to avoid this for the new routi nes, the music has different "themes" for each level. For example, Level1--"Nursery Rhyme," Level2--"Circus," Level 3--"Boogie Woogie," Level4--"Salsa/Reggae," Level5--"Rock and Roll/Blues," Level6--"Spanish/Lyrical."

Q: Which coaches created which routines?

A: The JO Committee developed the list of elements and the routines for vault and bars. Several of those on the committee (Tom Koll, Cheryl Jarrett and Laurie Reid) developed the choreography for beam and floor.

Q: What about the new Levels 1-3 program. What's the idea behind this?

A: Gymnastics' biggest competition is other sports, such as soccer. In other sports, the chi ldren go to practice a few times, and then are actually "playing the game." In gymnastics, it seems that it takes an average child 1 to 3 years of taking classes before she may be asked to participate as a team member. With the new Level 1-3 program of recreation competition, the very short, basic routines will be easy to memorize, even if the child is only taking two classes per week, so more children will be able to "play the game." We hope that this concept will grow the numbers of participants at the grassroots level, which of course, will be to the benefit of private gymnastics clubs across the country. The goal is to get more children involved in our wonderful sport and experience the positive benefits it has to offer.

New Men's Junior Olympic Competition Program to be

The 2005-2008 Junior Olympic Program wiLL be unveiled at an Age Group Competition Committee Workshop that will take place May 9-10, 2004, in conjunction with the Men's JO Nationals in San Diego May 5-9. The new program will go into effect starting with 2004-2005 competitive season and the NationaL Gymnastics Judges Association wiLL be offering new JO judging courses to prepare judges for the new program.

In addition to the presentation at the 2004 JO Nationals, there wiLL be eight regionaL workshops conducted throughout the country during the two weekends following JO Nationals. Not onLy wiLL the workshops give everyone an opportunity to receive aLL of the new Junior Olympic Program materials and ask questions (program materials wiLL not be availabLe for purchase by maiL untiL the conclusion of the workshops), but sessions on coach's education and Long term athLete deveLopment will also be offered to heLp prepare everyone for the new quadrennium.

The Age Group Competition Committee (AGCC) is made up of Chairman Gil Elsass and members Steve Butcher, Jon CuLbertson, Keith Pettit, Jeff Robinson, Yuejin Sun and Bo Morris, USA Gymnastics Men's Program Manager. The committee is very diverse representing

grassroots and eLite coaches, club owners, program directors and judges.
