(57) ABSTRACT

Disclosed herein is a lubrication device comprising a solidlubricant disposed between and in contact with a firstelectrode and a second electrode dimensioned and arrangedsuch that application of an electric potential between the firstelectrode and the second electrode sufficient to produce anelectric arc between the first electrode and the secondelectrode to produce a plasma in an ambient atmosphere atan ambient pressure which vaporizes at least a portion of thesolid lubricant to produce a vapor stream comprising thesolid lubricant. Methods to lubricate a surface utilizing thelubrication device in-situ are also disclosed.

RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims the benefit of a related U.S.Provisional Application Ser. No. 61/750,894 filed Jan. 10,2013, entitled "PULSED PLASMA LUBRICATOR (PPL)TECHNOLOGY FOR THE IN-SITU REPLENISHMENTOF DRY LUBRICANTS IN EXTREME ENVIRON-MENTS" to Richard Hofer et al., the disclosure of which isincorporated by reference herein in its entirety.

GOVERNMENT RIGHTS

The instant disclosure described hereunder was made inthe performance of work under a NASA contract, and issubject to the provisions of Public Law #96-517 (35 U.S.C.202) in which the Contractor has elected not to retain title.

BACKGROUND

Numerous processes, operations and missions employmobility systems and other moving mechanical assemblies,including terrestrial applications, and those on Mars, theMoon, and in deep space. Such operations require reliableoperation of various mechanical assemblies and their tribo-logical components. Wet lubricants may provide the lubri-cation necessary but may require various control systems toavoid solidification, application, and other functions. Drylubricants have characteristics suitable for use in environ-ments or in systems in which wet lubricants are not ideal.However, a major drawback of a dry lubricant is the lowwear resistance that eventually leads to failure of the assem-bly as the lubricant is removed. The longevity of systemsemploying moving mechanical assemblies may be limitedby the ability to maintain lubrication. A need clearly existsto provide in-situ lubrication to remote assemblies to extendthe lifetime of the mechanical assemblies and systems.

Pulsed plasma thrusters have been in existence for anumber of years and are well known in the art. Pulsedplasma thrusters function by creating a plasma between twoelectrodes and ablating a dry propellant proximate to theplasma, generating a gas which exits an orifice of thethruster producing a force. However, to maximize the outputof the thruster, the ablation of the solid propellant is com-plete, rendering the utility of the resulting gas jet otherwiseuseless.

SUMMARY

This summary is provided to introduce a selection ofconcepts that are further described below in the detaileddescription. This summary is not intended to identify key oressential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is itintended to be used as an aid in limiting the scope of theclaimed subject matter.The instant application is directed to the unexpected

discovery that a pulsed plasma thruster may be manipulatedto produce a jet or plume of exhaust gas suitable for use asa source for dry lubricant. It was discovered that the dimen-sions and physical arrangement of the various electrodes inrelation to, and the composition of the solid fuel may be usedto control ablation of the solid such that an amount of thevaporous solid material exiting the pulsed plasma thruster issuitable for use in application of a solid lubricant onto asurface. It was further discovered that by placing a surface

2proximate to this plume generated by the pulsed plasmathruster, the surface may be lubricated in-situ with anotherwise dry lubricant, which is in direct contrast to boththe generally regarded composition of the exhaust produced

5 by a pulsed plasma thruster, the temperatures generated bythe plasma, and the cumbersome and extensive techniquesutilized to produce surfaces having films of dry lubricationknown in the art.In an embodiment, a lubrication device comprises a solid

20 comprising the solid lubricant.In another embodiment, a method comprises disposing a

plasma lubricator proximate to a surface in an ambientatmosphere at an ambient pressure, the plasma lubricatorcomprising a solid lubricant disposed between and in contact

25 with a first electrode and a second electrode; applying anelectric potential between the first electrode and the secondelectrode and optionally activating an igniter to produce anelectric arc between the first electrode and the secondelectrode to produce a plasma in an amount and for a period

30 of time sufficient to ablate at least a portion of the solidlubricant whereby a vapor stream comprising the solidlubricant is produced; and directing the vapor stream ontothe surface such that at least a portion of the solid lubricantis deposited onto the surface.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

At the outset, it should be noted that in the developmentof any such actual embodiment, numerous implementation-specific decisions must be made to achieve the developer'sspecific goals, such as compliance with system related andbusiness related constraints, which will vary from oneimplementation to another. Moreover, it will be appreciatedthat such a development effort might be complex and timeconsuming but would nevertheless be a routine undertakingfor those of ordinary skill in the art having the benefit of thisdisclosure. In addition, the system used/disclosed herein canalso comprise some components other than those cited.The following detailed description is of the best currently

contemplated modes of carrying out the subject of theinstant disclosure. The description is not to be taken in alimiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose ofillustrating the general principles of the disclosure since thescope of the disclosure is best defined by the appendedclaims.

In the following description, numerous specific details areset forth to provide a thorough understanding of the presentinvention. However, it will be obvious to those skilled in theart that the present invention may be practiced without suchspecific details. In other instances, well-known devices havebeen shown in block diagram form in order not to obscurethe subject matter of the instant disclosure in unnecessarydetail. For the most part, details unnecessary to obtain acomplete understanding of the instant disclosure have beenomitted in as much as such details are within the skills ofpersons of ordinary skill in the relevant art.

For purposes herein and the claims attached hereto, thenew numbering scheme for the Periodic Table Groups isused as in Chem. Eng. News, 1985, 63, 27. Therefore, a"Group 4 metal" is an element from Group 4 of the PeriodicTable.

For purposes herein, it is to be understood that disclosuredirected to an electric arc between two electrodes in anambient atmosphere at an ambient pressure to produce aplasma between the two electrodes is dependent on both the

5 composition of the ambient atmosphere and the absolutepressure experienced by the device in-situ for a particularapplication. Accordingly, the spacing, current, voltage, and/or the need for an igniter to produce the spark whichsubsequently results in formation of the plasma between the

io two electrodes will vary depending on the ambient pressureand the composition of the ambient atmosphere as is readilyapparent to one of skill in the art.

It is to be further understood that the spark and/or theresulting plasma produced by an electrical current flowing

15 between two electrodes is present in an amount sufficient toablate and/or vaporize at least a portion of the solid lubricantpresent therein to produce a vapor stream comprising thesolid lubricant. It is to be further understood that while aportion of the solid lubricant may be completely dissociated

20 and/or chemically altered, the dimensions and arrangementof the instant pulsed plasma lubrication device or controlledsuch that at least a portion of the solid lubricant remainsin-tact in the vapor stream in a form suitable to providelubrication to a surface onto which the vapor stream con-

25 tacts. Attempts are made herein to elucidate the actualmechanism by which the vapor stream comprising the solidlubricant is formed, however, it is not necessary to under-stand the precise mechanism by which the vapor streamcomprising the solid lubricant is produced and the ability to

3o direct this vapor stream comprising the solid lubricant ontoa surface under conditions suitable to allow at least a portionof the solid lubricant to adsorb and/or absorb onto thesurface.In addition, it is to be understood that a lubricant may be

35 a liquid under some conditions and a solid under other, moreextreme conditions. For purposes herein, a solid lubricantalso includes a wet-lubricant which is in solid or semi-solidform under the conditions of use, which requires activeheating under a particular set of conditions.

This circular well and ratio of the circumference to theheight of the well is crucial to the utility of the instantapplication. The plurality of sides radially arranged about acentral axis having an average inner diameter of about 20%to about 60% of the thickness of the solid lubricant is indirect contrast the ratio require by a pulsed plasma thrusterto maximize thrust. It has been discovered that this ratio, byspecifically reducing the amount of force produced, resultsin partial ablation of the solid, thus the ablated solid retainslubrication characteristics previously unknown in the art.

In an embodiment, the first electrode has an annular shapecomprising a plurality of sides radially disposed about thecentral axis having a first outer diameter, the second elec-trode has an annular shape comprising a plurality of sidesradially disposed about the central axis having a secondouter diameter which is less than the first outer diameter ofthe first electrode, and the solid lubricant has an annularshape comprising a plurality of sides radially disposed aboutthe central axis having a third outer diameter which isgreater than the second outer diameter of the second elec-trode and less than or equal to the first outer diameter of thefirst electrode.

Turning to the Figures, FIG. 1 shows a cross section of alubrication device according to an embodiment of the pres-ent disclosure. The lubrication device generally referred toas 10 comprises a solid lubricant 12 disposed between andin contact with a first electrode 14 and a second electrode 16dimensioned and arranged such that application of an elec-tric potential 18, which may be produced by a power supply28, between the first electrode 14 and the second electrode16 sufficient to produce an electric arc 20 between the firstelectrode 14 and the second electrode 16 in an ambientatmosphere at an ambient pressure, generally referred to as22, produces a plasma 78 which ablates and vaporizes atleast a portion of the solid lubricant 12 to produce a vaporstream 24 comprising a portion of the solid lubricant 12 atleast partially in-tact or in a form which provides lubricity.

In an embodiment, the lubrication device 10 may furtherinclude an igniter 26 to initiate the electric arc 20, dependingon the ambient atmosphere and ambient pressure 22. Theigniter 26 is shown protruding through the solid lubricant 12,but may also be located proximate to or integral with the firstelectrode 14 and/or the second electrode 16 (See FIG. 2).As shown in FIG. 2, in an embodiment, the lubrication

device 10 includes the solid lubricant 12 disposed betweenand in contact with a planer surface 30 of the first electrode14 and a parallel planer surface 32 of the second electrode16 separated by a distance 34 equal to a thickness 36 of thesolid lubricant 12 in contact with both the first electrode 14and the second electrode 16. In an embodiment, the firstelectrode 14 comprises an orifice 38 disposed there throughcomprising a plurality of sides 40 radially arranged about acentral axis 42. In an embodiment, the average inner diam-eter 44 of the orifice 38 is about 20% to about 60% of thedistance 34 between the first electrode 14 and the secondelectrode 16. In an embodiment, the average inner diameter44 of the orifice 38 is about 25%, or about 30% or about 35%or about 40%, or about 45%, or about 50%, or about 55% ofthe distance 34 between the first electrode 14 and the secondelectrode 16.

In an embodiment, a portion of the second electrode 16has an average outer diameter 46 about the central axis 42which is larger than the average inner diameter 44 of theorifice 38. In an embodiment, the solid lubricant 12 isradially arranged about the central axis 42 and comprises ahole 48 disposed there through extending from the firstelectrode 14 to the second electrode 16, the hole comprisinga plurality of sides 50 radially arranged about the central axis42 and having an average inner diameter 52 greater than orequal to the average inner diameter 44 of the orifice 38.

In an embodiment, the first electrode 14 comprises agenerally annular shape comprising a plurality of sides 54radially disposed about the central axis 42 having an averagefirst outer diameter 56, and the second electrode 16 com-prises a generally annular shape comprising a plurality ofsides 58 radially disposed about the central axis 42 havingan average second outer diameter 46 which is less than thefirst outer diameter 56, and the solid lubricant 12 comprisesa generally annular shape composing a plurality of sides 60radially disposed about the central axis 42 having a thirdouter diameter 62 which is greater than the second outerdiameter 46 and less than or equal to the first outer diameter56. In an embodiment, the sides 54 of first electrode 14 forma well in which the solid lubricant 12 is secured.

8In an embodiment, the first electrode 14 and the second

electrode 16 may be attached or otherwise engaged with anon-conductive base 64. As is shown in FIG. 2, the firstelectrode 14 is secured to the base 64 via a plurality of

5 threaded members 66, and the solid lubricant 12 is dimen-sioned and arranged to fit within a groove 68 disposed withinthe base 64. Attachment of the first electrode 14 to the base64 frictionally engages the second electrode 16 in a corre-sponding groove 70 also located in the base 64

first electrode 414 and the second electrode 416 in the well415 such that the solid lubricant 412 absorbs radiation (heat)produced by the plasma 478 in an amount sufficient tosublimate a portion of the solid lubricant 412 forming avapor stream 488 comprising the solid lubricant 412 whichis accelerated by a pressure gradient 480 through a topportion of the electrode 417 and beyond at a velocity belowabout 1000 m/s. In an embodiment, the vapor stream 488comprising the solid lubricant 412 is accelerated by thepressure gradient 480 through the top portion of the elec-trode 417 and beyond at a velocity below about 900 m/s, orbelow about 800 m/s, or below about 700 m/s, or belowabout 600 m/s, or below about 500 m/s, or below about 400m/s, or below about 300 m/s, or below about 200 m/s, andabove about 1 m/s or above about 10 m/s.

In an embodiment, the first electrode, the second elec-trode, or both according to any one or more embodimentsare formed from a metal, including stainless steel, copper,gold, aluminum, titanium, platinum, and the like. In anembodiment, the entire lubrication device has a mass lessthan 1 kg, or less than 100 g, or less than 20 g, or less than10 g, or less than 5 g, or less than 1 g.

In an embodiment, the lubrication device is equipped toprovide lubrication of a surface for greater than 100 days, orgreater than 200 days, or greater than 10 years.

In an embodiment, the electric potential applied betweenthe electrodes is poised to produce a discharge potentialsuitable for use under a particular set of conditions, followedby a resting time when no potential is applied between theelectrodes. In an embodiment, the electric potential is pulsedon to produce vapor stream comprising the solid lubricantfor a period of time from about 0.001 seconds or greater. Inan embodiment, the electric potential is pulsed on to producevapor stream comprising the solid lubricant for a period oftime of greater than or equal to about 0.01 seconds, orgreater than or equal to about 0.1 seconds, or greater than orequal to about 1 second, depending on the requirements ofthe particular system.

In an embodiment, the electric potential applied betweenthe two electrodes is greater than or equal to the minimumbreakdown voltage of the ambient atmosphere at the ambi-ent pressure. In an embodiment, the electric potentialapplied between the two electrodes is greater than or equalto about 90%, or greater than or equal to about 100%, orgreater than or equal to about 150%, or greater than or equalto 200% of the minimum breakdown voltage of the ambientatmosphere at the ambient pressure.

In an embodiment, an igniter may be employed to producethe initial spark between the electrodes which subsequentlyproduces the plasma to produce the vapor stream comprisingthe solid lubricant. Suitable igniters include spark-plugs,

10spark-gaps, piezoelectric igniters, and/or the like which arelocated in proximity to the first electrode, the second elec-trode, or therebetween.In an embodiment, the lubrication device provides in-situ

5 lubrication operating on less than or equal to about 10 watts,or less than or equal to about 5 watts, or less than or equalto about 2 watts, or less than or equal to about 1 watt ofpower to produce the vapor steam comprising the solidlubricant.

35 period of time less than or equal to about 1 hour in anoperation cycle of a surface lasting 8 hours or more. In anembodiment, the lubrication device is operated to produce avapor stream comprising the solid lubricant for a period oftime less than or equal to about 30 minutes, or less than or

40 equal to about 10 minutes, or less than or equal to about 3minutes, or less than or equal to about 1 minute to lubricatea surface in an operation cycle of a surface lasting 8 hoursor more.In an embodiment, the vapor stream comprising the solid

45 lubricant exits the lubrication device and contacts the sur-face at a velocity below about 1000 m/s, or below about 900m/s, or below about 500 m/s, or below about 100 m/s, orbelow about 10 m/s, or below about 1 m/s, or below about0.1 m/s and above about 0.1 m/s, or above about 1 m/s, or

proximate to the surface to be lubricated in-situ, that is,under normal operational conditions, at a distance fromabout 0.1 mm to about 50 cm as determined from the closest

The lubrication device according to any one of embodi-ments 1 through 3, wherein the first electrode, thesecond electrode, the average inner diameter of theorifice and the distance between the first electrode andthe second electrode are arranged and dimensionedsuch that an electric potential applied between the firstand second electrodes produces an electric arc betweenthe first electrode and the second electrode in theambient atmosphere under the ambient pressure;wherein the electric arc forms an axial current produc-ing an azimuthal magnetic field along the axialdirection producing a radial Lorentz force whichradially compresses the electric arc forming a plasmabetween the first and second electrode and formingan axial pressure gradient between the second elec-trode and the orifice;

wherein the electric arc further forms a radially diverg-ing current present at the orifice producing an azi-muthal magnetic field in a radial direction producingan axial Lorentz force which accelerates the plasma

12in the axial direction away from the second electrodetowards the orifice at a velocity of greater than 1000m/s; and

wherein the solid lubricant absorbs radiation produced5 by the plasma in an amount sufficient to sublimate a

portion of the solid lubricant forming the vaporstream composing the solid lubricant which is accel-erated by the pressure gradient through the orifice ata velocity below about 1000 m/s.

13applying an electric potential between the first elec-

trode and the second electrode and optionally acti-vating an igniter to produce an electric arc betweenthe first electrode and the second electrode to pro-duce a plasma for an amount of time sufficient toproduce a vapor stream comprising the solid lubri-cant; and

directing the vapor stream onto the surface such that atleast a portion of the solid lubricant is deposited ontothe surface.

12. The method according to embodiment 11, wherein theplasma lubricator composes the solid lubricant dis-posed between and in contact with a planer surface ofthe first electrode and a parallel planer surface of thesecond electrode separated by a distance equal to athickness of the solid lubricant;the first electrode comprising an orifice disposed there

through comprising a plurality of sides radiallyarranged about a central axis and having an averageinner diameter of about 20% to about 60% of thethickness of the solid lubricant;

the second electrode having an average outer diameterabout the central axis which is larger than the aver-age inner diameter of the orifice;

the solid lubricant radially arranged about the centralaxis and comprising a hole disposed there throughfrom the first electrode to the second electrode, thehole comprising a plurality of sides radially arrangedabout the central axis and having an average innerdiameter greater than or equal to the average innerdiameter of the orifice.

13. The method according to embodiments 11 or 12,wherein the first electrode comprises a plurality of sidesradially disposed about the central axis having a firstouter diameter,the second electrode comprising a plurality of sides

radially disposed about the central axis having asecond outer diameter which is less than the firstouter diameter,

the solid lubricant comprising a plurality of sidesradially disposed about the central axis having a thirdouter diameter which is greater than the second outerdiameter and less than or equal to the first outerdiameter.

The method according to any one of embodiments 11through 13, wherein the first electrode, the secondelectrode, the average inner diameter of the orifice andthe distance between the first electrode and the secondelectrode are arranged and dimensioned such that theelectric potential applied between the first and secondelectrodes produces an electric arc between the firstelectrode and the second electrode in the ambientatmosphere under the ambient pressure;wherein the electric arc forms an axial current produc-ing an azimuthal magnetic field along the axialdirection producing a radial Lorentz force whichradially compresses the electric arc forming a plasmabetween the first and second electrode and formingan axial pressure gradient between the second elec-trode and the orifice;

wherein the electric arc further forms a radially diverg-ing current present at the orifice producing an azi-muthal magnetic field in a radial direction producingan axial Lorentz force which accelerates the plasmain the axial direction away from the second electrodetowards the orifice at a velocity of greater than 1000m/s; and

14wherein the solid lubricant absorbs radiation producedby the plasma in an amount sufficient to sublimate aportion of the solid lubricant forming the vaporstream comprising the solid lubricant which is accel-

5 erated by the pressure gradient through the orifice ata velocity below about 1000 m/s.

15. The method according to any one of embodiments 11through 14, wherein the vapor stream comprising thesolid lubricant is accelerated by the pressure gradient

To demonstrate the utility of embodiments disclosedherein the following examples are presented in which apractical system for replenishing dry lubricants in-situ using

55 plasma deposition technology as a replacement for drylubricants with low wear resistance or wet lubricants requir-ing active heating in extreme environments is shown. FIG.7 shows a pulsed plasma lubrication device suitable for usein conditions typical of the Martian atmosphere. A trigger-

60 less firing circuit was employed with a lubrication deviceaccording to embodiments disclosed herein which exploitsthe breakdown characteristics of the 5 torr Martian atmo-sphere, comprising 95% CO2, and having a minimum break-down voltage of about 460V at about 0.5 mmHg*cm using

65 a 1 mm gap between the first electrode and the secondelectrode. The lubrication device was operated in a pulsedmode as shown in FIG. 8.

15To evaluate wear resistance, an frictional biased evalua-

tion device was constructed as shown in FIG. 9 wherein astainless steel surface was rotated in frictional contact witha stationary stainless steel surface biased against the rotatingsurface at a force of 1.5 lbs for a period of time using 5

different lubricants applied to the rotating device in anatmosphere and under ambient conditions similar to those onMars, and then removed from this atmosphere and testedunder ambient conditions in the lab. The wear on the rotatingshaft was then measured after a period of time. The data are ioshown in FIG. 10. The bare metal, pre-applied perfluorinatedethylene, and pre-applied graphite examples represent com-parative examples. The pulsed plasma lubricator was posi-tioned proximate to the rotting shaft in a chamber at about5 torr in a CO2 atmosphere similar to the conditions found 15on Mars, and pulsed a plurality of times over a few minutesto simulate in-situ lubrication using perfluorinated ethyleneand molybdenum disulfide dispersed in a perfluorinatedethylene matrix. The lubricated shaft was then removedfrom the Martian atmospheric chamber and installed in the 20test stand in the laboratory. As the data show, the in-situapplied perfluorinated ethylene according to the instantdisclosure is superior in lubricity to pre-applied perfluori-nated ethylene, which was applied by a commercial processconsistent with those readily available in the art. 25

A replenishment experiment was conducted to character-ize the ability of the pulsed plasma lubrication device (PPL)to re-establish worn films after undergoing wear. The dataare shown in FIG. 11. Results obtained indicate that the PPLcan replenish the film and maintain a total wear rate lower 30than films pre-deposited in a single exposure.

Another set of experiments was conducted to evaluate theability to provide multiple lubrication steps to a surfaceunder frictional engagement and to characterize the lubricityof the films with regard to moving gears and the wear 35associated with such systems. The apparatus is shown inFIG. 12. In these experiments, an electric motor turned ashaft engaged with a set of miter gears. The other miter gearwas attached to an output generator with a simulated load.The PPL was placed about 10 cm from the miter gears and 40equipped with perfluorinated ethylene as the dry lubricant.The entire apparatus was located in a chamber at a pressureof about 5 torr in CO2 to simulate the Martian atmosphereand the time of lubrication being applied in-situ was varied,as shown in the figures. Bare metal gears without lubrication 45were used as a control. Various comparative examples andexamples according to embodiments disclosed herein wereevaluated. The data are shown in FIGS. 13-17. As the datain FIGS. 13 and 14 show, the gears may be coated orotherwise lubricated using the PPL during initial operation 50and still provide superior lubrication. As the data in FIG. 15show, the control mechanism without lubrication fails after20 min. FIGS. 16 and 17 show the PPL applied perfluori-nated ethylene film exhibits similar performance as a pre-applied film and may also be replenished in situ. 55

Accordingly, in situ lubrication has been successfullyexecuted. A surface lubricated in-situ by the PPL accordingto the instant disclosure exceeds a non-lubricated mechani-cal assembly, which fails after 10-20 minutes. The PPL alsoprovides effective lubrication with exposure times as short 60as 3 minutes allowing for operation of the assembly forseveral hours. Furthermore, the lubricity and wear charac-teristics of the pulsed plasma lubrication device films aresimilar if not superior to pre-applied MoS2/perfluorinatedethylene films. 65

The data demonstrate that very small amounts of lubricantmay be used to achieve effective lubrication and wear

16utilizing the PPL according to the instant disclosure. Thisfurther confirms that the lubricant reservoir can be smallerthan previously thought and that the power demand of agiven PPL will be low, a few watts at most.The scalability of the PPL was demonstrated with an

alternative embodiment utilising a specially modified 1/8" RFcable with perfluorinated ethylene insulation and copperconductors as the lubrication device. The lubrication devicewas operated with 2.2 mF capacitor (Vd=700 V, E-0.5 7)with a firing frequency of from 1 to 5 Hz at a power of from2 to 10 watts. The data are shown in FIG. 18. As the datashow, the alternative embodiment demonstrated steady-stateoperation of the mechanism.

It should be understood, of course, that the foregoingrelates to preferred embodiments of the invention and thatmodifications may be made without departing from the spiritand scope of the invention as set forth in the followingclaims.We claim:1. A lubrication device, for lubricating a surface, com-

prising:a solid lubricant disposed between and in contact with a

first electrode and a second electrode dimensioned andarranged such that application of an electric potentialbetween the first electrode and the second electrodesufficient to produce an electric arc between the firstelectrode and the second electrode in an ambient atmo-sphere at an ambient pressure produces a plasma thatvaporizes at least a portion of the solid lubricant toproduce a vapor stream comprising solid lubricant,wherein the vapor stream is directed towards the sur-face to lubricate the surface.

2. The lubrication device of claim 1, wherein the solidlubricant is disposed between and in contact with a planersurface of the first electrode and a parallel planer surface ofthe second electrode separated by a distance equal to athickness of the solid lubricant;

the first electrode comprising an orifice disposed therethrough comprising one of a plurality of sides or oneside radially arranged about a central axis and havingan average inner diameter of 20% to 60% of thethickness of the solid lubricant;

the second electrode having an average outer diameterabout the central axis which is larger than the averageinner diameter of the orifice;

the solid lubricant radially arranged about the central axisand comprising a hole disposed there through from thefirst electrode to the second electrode, the hole com-prising one of a plurality of sides or one side radiallyarranged about the central axis and having an averageinner diameter greater than or equal to the averageinner diameter of the orifice.

3. The lubrication device of claim 2, wherein the firstelectrode comprises one of a plurality of sides or one sideradially disposed about the central axis having a first outerdiameter, the second electrode comprising one of a pluralityof sides or one side radially disposed about the central axishaving a second outer diameter which is less than the firstouter diameter, and the solid lubricant comprising one of aplurality of sides or one side radially disposed about thecentral axis having a third outer diameter which is greaterthan the second outer diameter and less than or equal to thefirst outer diameter.

4. The lubrication device of claim 2, wherein the hrstelectrode, the second electrode, the average inner diameterof the orifice and the distance between the first electrode andthe second electrode are arranged and dimensioned such that

17an electric potential applied between the first and secondelectrodes produces an electric arc between the first elec-trode and the second electrode in the ambient atmosphereunder the ambient pressure;

wherein the electric arc forms an axial current producingan azimuthal magnetic field having an axial directionproducing a radial Lorentz force which radially com-presses the electric arc forming a plasma between thefirst and second electrode and forming an axial pressuregradient between the second electrode and the orifice;

wherein the electric arc further forms a radially divergingcurrent present at the orifice producing an azimuthalmagnetic field having a radial direction producing anaxial Lorentz force which accelerates the plasma in theaxial direction away from the second electrode towardsthe orifice at a velocity of greater than 1000 m/s; and

wherein the solid lubricant absorbs radiation produced bythe plasma in an amount sufficient to sublimate aportion of the solid lubricant forming the vapor streamcomprising the solid lubricant which is accelerated bythe pressure gradient through the orifice at a velocitybelow about 1000 m/s.

5. The lubrication device of claim 1 wherein the secondelectrode is disposed along a central axis, the first electrodehaving a circular cross section perpendicular to the centralaxis is concentrically disposed about the first electrode andthe solid lubricant is uniformly dispersed between and incontact with the first electrode and the second electrode.

6. The lubrication device of claim 1, further comprising apower supply in contact with the first electrode and thesecond electrode capable of producing the electric arcbetween the first electrode and the second electrode toproduce the plasma in the ambient atmosphere at the ambi-

18ent pressure for a period of time sufficient to vaporize at leasta portion of the solid lubricant to produce the vapor streamcomprising the solid lubricant, and optionally an ignitersuitable to initiate the electric arc between the first electrode
