    share a moment with shelli

In each november Issue of Stampin Success or as

long as I can remember, I have written a message o

thanksgiving and gratitude. Each year, I briely think

about discussing something dierent, wondering iyou get tired o the same topic year ater year. But I

cant do itgratitude is such an integral part o who

I am and what I bel ieve in, and I cant miss out on such

a natural opportunity as hanksgiving to express mine.

Dietrich Bonhoeer, a German theologian and pastor,

once said, In ordinary lie we hardly realize that we

receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is

only with gratitude that lie becomes rich.

I have been blessed to have received so many wonderul

blessings rom a loving Heavenly Father . . . certa inly

much more than I have given! And the most precious

o my blessings are the amazing people who have been

part o my lie through the years. hey say you cant

take anything w ith you but the relationships and

memories youve created with others; these are things

that bring the greatest joy and meaning to our lives.

I know thats certainly the case in my lie!

hanksgiving is the perect time or me to express thanks

to you. I dont think you can ever say thank you enough

especially i its sincere, and my thanks are most deinitely

sincere. As a demonstrator, you have caught the vision o

what I imagined Stampin Up! could be so many years ago.

You share my love or what we do, and what we believe in.

You love to create, and you are dedicated to making a

dierence in the lives o those around youall things

that I believe in so passionately!

During this holiday season, I wish you the blessing o

being grateul, and enjoying the richness in your lie that

comes rom recognizing the many wonderul blessings

    that ill our lives!

    Happy hanksgiving!

ami is all about sharingsharing stamps,

sharing un, sharing Stampin Up! And

she understands that getting the word out

about her Stampin Up! business is the key

to her success. Share your excitement!

When you hit a great sale in a store, you

dont want to hide it. You share it! she

says. Sharing Stampin Up! is the same

    eeling. Your excitement and enthusiasm

are contagious, just like your smile.ami advises other demonstrators to be

themselves and not worry about what

others are doing dierently. We all have

a uniqueness that sets us apart, she says.

Learn rom others, and dont become

overwhelmed by trying to copy everything

everyone else is doing. ami is also big on

encouraging others. I live to inspire. I love

watching my customers grow in condence

with each new project they make, she says.

I love seeing them expand their horizons,

especially when they become one o theStampin Up! amily. Stampin Up! has

given me so many amazing opportunities

that my amily and I would have never had,

and I want to share that with everyone.

Tere are so many wonderul things that

being a part o this company has added

to my lie. We love her enthusiasm and

    positive outlook!

    HeatherSummers#1 (CAN)

    I

    L,

When we asked Heather how she elt

    about being Canadas top Demonstrator

o the Year, she told us she elt honored.

But she continued, When I received the

Founders Circle purse, I was so proud o

my team and all o their accomplishments!

It truly is a group eort and I wouldnt

be where I am without them! O course

Heather had to do a lot o work on her

own to make it to the top, so we asked

what her best strength was. I would have

to say structure has been my biggest

strength this year, she says. Structure

has brought balance as I allocate a set

number o hours to my business. Tis

has helped me stay ocused on my business,

amily, and other activities. I dont eel as

though I am being stretched in so many

directions and I am truly putting orth

a better eort in all areas. Heatherbelieves setting goals is an important

part o building your business as well.

Her advice or other demonstrators is

to set small, more attainable goals that

will lead you to achieving a larger goal.

According to Heather, i you dont have

a goal, whether its sales, recruiting, or

crating, youll never be able to measure

    your achievement!

    DeniseSullivan#2 (US)

    F, x

Denise was in shock when she ound

out that she was one o the top

Demonstrators o the Year. It wasone o the biggest and best surprises

o my lie! she tells us. In order to be

the best demonstrator she can, Denise

tries to show new products or new

ways to use old products so that her

    customers always know theyll learn

something new rom her. It can be a

new technique, a new product, or just

a unique project. But no matter what

    projects Denise is demonstrating,

the way she treats her customers is

another actor in their loyalty to her.

I treat my customers the way I would

like to be treated, and that includes

giving them the best customer service

    possible. She continues, Answering

their calls or e-mails promptly, getting

    their orders processed quickly, always

being riendly, and even giving them

little treats rom Memento Mall when

possible[these are] all th ings I would

like someone to do or me! Denise

holds about eight events each month

    and she shares the demonstrator

opportunity every chance she gets. Herbest advice or other demonstrators is

to be fexible and try new things. I

one way doesnt work, try another way!

Tats great advice or lienot just or

demonstrator, it is easier to get bookings

    and recruits. She contacts customers

ater they have received their order to

make sure they are satised and sends

thank-you cards to show her appreciation

Kim knows just what it takes to be a

    successul demonstrator. You need to

have a well-rounded business, she says.

And workshops are a must. What are

Angie had a dicult year and was araid

her business was going to suer becaus

o it, so o course she was thrilled to n

out that she was still among the top

Demonstrators o the Year. I love

helping people and customer service is

very important to me. Im always trying

new ways to develop relationships with

all o those relationships Ive built with

just as Ive always been there or them.

She works hard to build strong

    relationships with her customers and

earn their loyalty. When it comes to

    MaggiePatterson#2 (CAN)

    S CS M,

As a demonstrator, my positive, can-do

attitude is probably one o my biggest

assets. It helps keep me ocused and on

track, especial ly when (like most o us)

I am juggling so many other things,

including a amily and a ull-t ime job,

Maggie tells us. She eels that this award

was a major accomplishment and the

culmination o a lot o hard work. I am so

thankul to my amily, riends, customers, and especially my downline! Maggie shares

that she typically holds six workshops each

month, but, I always strive to have our

on my calendar regardless o the time o

year. Tat consistency keeps my customers

coming back and they know that i they

want a certain month they need to book

early to get the date they want. Maggie

always tries to make her workshops un,

and she makes a special eort to get to

know her customers. It sounds simple,

but taking the time to really get to know

them makes a world o dierence and

matters in their l ives. Im not just their

demonstrator, but a riend, and we look

orward to getting together over stamps,

paper, and ink. For Maggie, nding new

customers simply means nding new riends!

emboss resIst Is a classIc stamping technique you may have

already tried. It looks (and eels) abulous. But because the results

are remarkable, some customers assume that it must be a dicult

technique to master and they shy away rom it because o their

ear. Nothing could be urther rom the truth. Its simple to create

a beautiul emboss resist project: just heat emboss an image, apply

ink over and around the embossed image, and then wipe away the

    excess ink.

But thats just the beginning. Emboss resist is a surprisingly

fexible technique, lending itsel to a variety o looks. Most

oten, stampers use Clear Stampin Emboss Powder so the pure

color o the base card stock shows through. But or a dierent

look, try emboss resist on Designer Series Paper using a colored

Stampin Emboss powder; the colored powder wil l completely

obscure the paper underneath it. On the My Friend card, we

used emboss resist with White Stampin Emboss Powder to

make the fower image stand out rom the Designer Series

Paper, then we sponged and blended Sot Suede ink to create

a transition between the paper and the embossed image. Striking?

    Yes. Dicult? No.

You can also use emboss resist to add dimension and give an

illusion o layers without adding bulk. Look at our Give Tanks

card. Te colorul layers on this card create a dramatic backdrop

or the sentiment. Te vibrant background is sponged over lea

images that have been stamped in both Classic and VersaMark

ink. Ten or added interest, bold lea images are embossed on

top o the piece. Te result is a stunning combination o color

    and texture.

Generally, when theres high contrast in color between the paper

and ink, the image will pop more. But sometimes a light hand is

called or when applying the ink over embossing, as shown on our

Many Tanks card. Te ink is not as obvious as with most emboss

resist applications, and the result is delicate yet impressive.

I youre looking or a technique to wow your customers, let them try

emboss resist. Create your own emboss resist project and display it

at your next workshop. ell your guests, If youd like to discover how

easy this technique is, come talk to me and we will set up a time for you

and a few fr iends to learn how to do this.

As you collect their orders at the emboss resist workshop, make

sure they have all the tools they need to be successul in using this

technique: a Heat ool, VersaMark Pad or VersaMarker, Stampin

good neWs! Stampin Up! now oers a scoring tool that makes

it a breeze to create multiple score marks. Our new Simply Scored

tool has a scoring base that is slightly larger than 12" x 12" with

vertical scoring grooves every 1/8", perect or making itty bittyolds, such as those on rosettes. I you want larger olds, simply

score every 1/2", or every 3/8", or every 1"you get the idea. You

can choose how ar apart you want the score marks to be.

Simply Scored comes with rulers on the top and side and three

Place Markers (additional Place Markers are sold separately).

Te Place Markers come in handy i youre doing multiple

projects with the same scoring measurements. Just insert

the Place Marker into the slot at the top o the Simply Scored

tool and orget about measuring over and over.

Te 5-7/16" stylus has a cushioned grip or comort and a large

tip and small tip so you can choose how wide you want the actualscore line to be. (Youll need to experiment a bit to determine the

correct amount o pressure to apply or dierent types o paper.)

Teres even a convenient storage compartment in the back o the

tool or storing Place Markers, the Stylus, or a Bone Folder (sold

separately), so you can keep your scoring and olding tools together.

Plan a workshop to spotlight Simply Scored and display some

projects that have rosettes on them. As your guests marvel at the

rosettes, pull out the Simply Scored tool and show them how easy

it is to create stacks o rosettes. You could say, Rosettes are a fun

accent, but who has the time or patience to mark and measure with

a ruler? I have a shortcutI use the Simply Scored tool to make the

score marks on rosettes in just seconds. Its also great for scoring paper

or card stock for cards, boxes, 3-D projects, or anything elsethe

rulers are built in, and the grooves keep score marks perfectly straight

    and even.

Simply Scored can simpliy your crating and give you beautiul

your holiday vacation in a simila

way. I you want to take one or tw

    weeks o during December, plan

ahead so that when you return t

work at the beginning o the New

Year, you have events planned or

    January, ample supplies or worksh

    projects, inormation about curre

    promotions, and everything else

youll need to get right back into it

    puttIng tIme to gooD use

    In addition to planning ahead,

    ocusing on your customers time

is another way to make it much

easier or them to agree to a holida

event. ime is always hard to nd

but it is especially scarce during

the holidays. You may need to be

    particularly careul to make your

December events more brie and th

    projects more immediately useul

For example, think o the numbe

o greeting cards you like to send

out during the holidays to r iend

and relatives. For some, the numb

could be relatively small, while or

others the list could have upwards

o 100 names on it. Even i your

    average customer was only plannin

to send out about 25 cards, the

    the holIday season is always

one o the busiest times o the year.

Tere are dinners and parties to plan,

seemingly endless git lists to shop

or, packages and greeting cards to

mail, gits to wrapthe list goes on

    and on.

During the hustle and bustle o thisbusy time, many businesses thrive.

From Black Friday and Cyber Monday

all the way through to Super Saturday,

retail stores all over the world are

    packed rom morning till night.

    Storeowners can generally expect

to do an average o about 20 percent

o their annual sales during this

    one-month period. And retail jewelers

can actually take in just under one-

third o their sales or the entire

year during the renzied commotiono the holiday season.

    However, despite the impressive

success o retail stores during the

    holidays, many Stampin Up!

    demonstrators see the inverse o

    this phenomenon in their own

    businesses. Instead o seeing a

boost in sales during the holidays

    especially in Decembermany

    demonstrators see a signicant

    decrease in comparison to their

monthly average. And it isnt hardto imagine why. Retail stores are

    ully staed, have ar-reaching

    marketing campaigns, and their

    stockrooms are ull o merchandise.

In contrast, your business is solely

owned and operated by a single

person: you. You are the boss, the

    employee, the marketing department,

the sales sta, and the creative

director! So its no surprise that as

    you and your customers become

    more personally busy around the

holidays, it gets very challenging to

operate your business at the same

level as usual. And in addition to

all o these diculties that the

season presents, it is also a time

when we just want to relax, spendtime with amily, and escape the

stress o everyday lie. All o these

things can add up to make the

holidays a very dicult time to

    keep your business growing.

At the same time, this challenging

situation is a bit ironic, because

one o the best reasons to make

cards and scrapbooks is to celebrate

    and remember the special occasions

    that occur throughout our lives.

And ew yearly occasions are morecelebrated or more memorable than

the holiday season. What a perect

time to create greeting cards, treat

boxes, scrapbook pages, and git tags!

Tere is no shortage o reasons to

get together and stamp during the

holidays, but nding reasons to do

it is o course the easy part. Making

it happen is where it gets tricky.

    plan aHeaD

Lets start with a couple o tips.

First and oremost, plan ahead. Its hard to coordinate schedules

    during a month when everyone

is so busy, and the longer you wait,

    the more your customers calendars

will ll up. I you havent already

this, money is oten on our minds

    around the holidays, and stamps

could easily seem like a luxury

    item during December.

Tink o wayssuch as the stampcamp describedin which your

    customers can make instead o

purchases with you, rather than in

    addition to purchases. Tis simply

means that the money they spend

with you is money they would have

had to spend elsewhere anyway, in

order to buy things like greeting

cards or git boxes, bags, and tags.

o add more variety to a December

    event, oer two separate projects

while continuing to keep costs low.You can make our Peace on Earth

tag (also in this months Online

    Extras) alongside the Merry and

Bright card to oer both a card and

a git tag. All you have to do to make

it more aordable is use many o

the same products in both projects.

Tis will reduce the cost o supplies,

and highlight the versatility o the

    products as well. For example,

prospect o taking the time to make

all o them by hand could be

    daunting, especially with all the

holiday shopping she has to do.

    aking your customers time into

consideration, try to make it easier.

For most people, about 10 cards

would be enough or their parents,

siblings, and a ew o their closest

riends, so consider holding a stamp

camp in which your customerscan make as ew as 10 beautiul,

    handmade greeting cards or their

    closest riends and amily members.

Tis allows you to hold an event

which brings in sales, but it doesnt

    overwhelm your customers with

    too much work.

A project like our Merry and Bright

card (ound in this months Online

    Extras) would be perecta simple

and elegant design that uses several

consumable items that yourcustomers will want to purchase

and use in uture projects. Add

estive treats and holiday music to

    make it a memorable experience

that your customers will want to

repeat next year. With a ormat like

this, you take up less o their time

    while helping them cross something

o o their to-do list, and you get to

    place a workshop order aterward.

    consIDerIng cost

Te last point to remember is cost.

    Git-giving is a central part o the

holiday season, and most o the

gits we give cost money. Many

o us plan to strictly budget our

    money during the holidays, but

since we all want to give our loved

ones gits theyl l love, many o us

still end up going over our

    predetermined limit. Because o

eature the Merry & ype Set, Very

Vanilla Card Stock, Letters to Santa

    With precise planning and careul

needs during this busy season, you

a story Is told o two salesmen who

were sent to a araway land to sel l shoes.

Ater the rst day, one sent word back

home complaining, Tis place is a disaster!

No one wears shoes! Te second one

also sent word home: Tis place is a gold

mine! No one wears shoes! Which o

these two do you think had the greatestpotential or happiness? For success?

Who likely had the most energy and

conviction to put into their work? Having

a positive attitude toward your business

and toward lie in general may be one o

    the most important characteristics o

your success. And the good news is that

it is entirely in your control.

Te act that a good attitude has an impact

on our lives is not shocking. Studies have

continually shown a causal link between

optimistic attitudes and good health. Salesguru Zig Ziglar says attitude is the dening

actor in a persons ability to succeed.

Studies suggest that an individuals attitude

is a main actor employers use when hiring

or promoting employees. So why bring this

up i most people know the importance o

    maintaining a positive attitude? Because

its easy to orget and its easy to give up

    ownership o our own attitudes.

    S

    b b .

    A

We may have little control over the bumps

we ace in our Stampin Up! businesses. We

cant control our customers. We cant control

the economy. We cant control our hostesses.

Sometimes we dont have time to make the

projects we want to make or organize ourselves

as much as we would preer. Regardless, we

can still choose to view our business in apositive way. And through this, we can have

some control over how others react to us.

Do they want to buy rom us again? Host or

us again? Sign up to be a member o our

downline? More than anything else we do,

choosing a positive attitude can impact these

things. A positive attitude is not an accident.

Tink about your own experience. Do you

want to work or or buy rom someone who is

    negative and always complaining? Someone

who reuses to play any role but that o the

victim? We may seek bad energy when we

are in a bad mood (ater all, misery loves

company), but when we want to eel secure inour decisions, we seek people who have good

attitudes and who are positive to be around.

    v .

    Vk Fk

O course, having a good attitude does not

mean we ignore challenges. Instead, having

a good attitude means we ace our challenges

while keeping our sights on what is most

important to us. We ask ourselves questions

that ocus on our ability to choose a good

attitude: Am I working on those things that

keep me ocused on what I need to do to

succeed? Are my energies ocused on my

success, not on what others are doing, have

done, or have achieved? Am I thankul

or the people who have helped me? Am I

appreciative o the opportunities that have

gone as planned and or those that didnt?Do I realize that, no matter the outcome,

I can still choose to keep a good attitude?

Keep a good attitude as you chart your

course or success. Tis pursuit alone

could be the dierence in what lies in store

or you as a Stampin Up! demonstrator

who becomes a part o your Stampin Up!

business, and who they, in turn, invite to

become a part o it. You may never know

how many people will be aected by your

attitude (positive or negative), but one thing

is or sureit will have an impact on atleast one important person in your lie: you!
