An American professor, James Gordon Ritter, is among those detained. He was taken from his home to the Ministry of Defense yesterday and his whereabouts now is unknown. The military authorities an- nounced today they were look- ing for 36 "extremist leaders," but they have made widespread arrests among foreigners known to be sympathetic to President Allende's Marxist regime. Four other Americans are un- accounted for in the widespread arrests that began two weeks ago with the overthrow of Pres- ident Mende. "We're checking everywhere for them —. prisons, hospitals and other government build- ings where they're holding pris- oners — but we have found no trace of them so far," Frank Tonini, press attache at the United States Embassy, said afternoon. A family spokesman said that Mrs. Allende would visit her daughter, Beatriz, who is the wife of a Cuban diplomat and left Santiago shortly after the military coup that deposed her father. She is expecting a baby. Mrs. Allende is expected to return to Mexico in about a week.

Widow of Allende Leaves Mexico for Visit in Cuba
