Our Mission
HOW CAN YOU
SUPPORT THE CLUB?
Dear Friends,
Do you remember the old Public Service Announcements with the message
“Do you know where your children are?” The message played on televisions
in the 70s and 80s to remind parents of curfew laws and to ensure that kids
were home and not causing trouble in the neighborhoods. Making sure your
kids were home after dark or at least knowing where they were and who they
were with used to be sufficient for ensuring their well-being. A teen who was
home sitting on the sofa with friends or in their room doing homework, was
likely to be safe and not engaged in risky behaviors.
Today, just because they are home, doesn’t mean they are safe. The many
devices that make life much more convenient for us – also open our youth to
many influences and opportunities that are sometimes beyond their ability to
manage. One of our goals at the Club is teach children and teens safe and
appropriate use of technology. We provide internet safety classes and are
developing new curriculum regarding social media. Even more importantly
we provide them with a range of opportunities and guidance so they put
those devices down and develop healthy in-person friendships, actively
participate in fitness activities, get involved in service projects, complete
their homework and stay on track in school.
YOUR financial support provides a safe place with trained mentors who
provide highly engaging activities that help young people of all ages develop
the interpersonal skills, academic knowledge, and healthy habits they will
certainly need to succeed as responsible adults.
Thank you for your on-going support.

The First Annual BGCC Teen Center
Open was held on Sunday, March 25,
2018 at the beautiful Black Gold Golf
Club in Yorba Linda. Chaired by local
Cypress community member, Charles
Williams, the event raised $25,000 to
help fund the Boys & Girls Club of
Cypress new Teen Center. The Club
expects to break ground on the 1600
sq. ft. Teen Center in April.
After a delicious continental
breakfast prepared by Karen Williams
and Amanda Huizar, the shotgun
signaled the start of the tournament
and the nearly 100 golfers hit the
greens to raise some green for the
Club. In addition to golfing,
participants enjoyed the games on
the course, meeting the pros and the
very entertaining Apple-Drive hole.
After all 18-holes, the golfers enjoyed
a delicious pasta buffet luncheon,
which included more than 100 raffle
and auction items donated by local
b u s i n es s e s a nd c o mmun i t y
members. Charles Williams was the
master of ceremonies for the very
energetic exciting afternoon. Awards
were presented to the winning Golf
Team of “Peat Out” (Jon Peat, Doug
Bailey, Paulo Morales and JT
Teutimez) and to the Most Honest
Team of “Rotary” (Andy Lachina,
William Hannah, Hank Machal, and
Josh Quonones). The crowd enjoyed
the Last Man Standing Game where
donors Frank Sherren of the Los
Alamitos Race Course, and Ken
Vecchiarelli of Golden State Water,
helped pull the numbers. The
winners, Paul Lussman and Doug
Haley, generously donated their
winnings back to the Club.
The Boys & Girls Club of Cypress is
expanding to better serve the growing
number of Teen members that
continue to join. The new Teen Center
will provide an additional 1600
square feet to the Main Clubhouse
building, allowing more Teens to join.
Thanks to the generous donations
from Bandai of $120,000, $100,000
from an anonymous Cypress resident,
local residents contributing another
$50,000, and now this golf
tournament, we have almost reached
our goal.
We are very grateful for the support
of our many Golf Tournament
Sponsors. With their support and
yours, the Teen Center will soon open
to help our members graduate on
time with a plan for their future and
the skills they need to make their
dreams a reality.
If you would like to join them in
helping to support the Teen Center,
inspire great futures, and build a
space for our Teens to belong.

Molding Musicians Program
The Molding Musicians program is a
free after-school music instruction
program offered as part of the Boys &
Girls Club on the Clara J. King
Elementary School campus. Many of
the 45 students enrolled in the
Molding Musicians program are
economically disadvantaged 10 to 12
year-olds who would not be able to
participate in music education
programs.
Additionally, 25 high school band and
orchestra students have an
opportunity to gain valuable teaching,
service and leadership experience by
volunteering up to 3 hours each week
to teach an instrument to a younger
child. The lessons take place in a
small group setting with volunteer
teachers working in pairs or small
groups to teach the students in their
respective instruments. Lessons are
offered in trumpet, flute, saxophone,
clarinet, trombone, violin, and piano.
Students and teachers received special awards and certificates for their
accomplishments in the Molding Musicians program.
Instructors and students meet twice a
week for a 1 hour practice session.
Currently in its fourth year, the
program continues to be a
tremendous success. Many of the
elementary students participating in
the program may have not had
access to instrumental music lessons
without this free program. After just a
few short months of instruction the
students proudly perform in a concert
for their families, teachers, and
friends.

On Friday,
M a r c h
9th, the
Boys &
Girls Club
of Cypress honored their Youth of the
Year recipient at the Orange County
Youth of the Year Banquet: Travis
from the Boys & Girls Club After-
School Program at King Elementary.
Travis was honored alongside youth
and teen representatives from the
other Clubs in Orange County. The
theme of the event was “Discover
Your Future” and was held at the
Discovery Science Center in Santa
Ana, CA. Travis was selected as the
representative for the Club due to his
posi tive atti tude, h is act ive
participation in school and Club
activities, and his willingness to
always help others.
Travis is a 6th grader at Clara King
Elementary. He participates in the
Club’s basketball team, the Club’s
soccer team, and has started playing
guitar in the Club-sponsored Molding
Musicians program. While at the
Club, Travis works hard to finish all of
his personal school work, then
frequently assists Club staff with
younger members, as well as
managing equipment and leading
sports activities. Travis’s favorite
activities are playing soccer and
basketball, and his favorite thing
about the Club is that there is always
somebody who cares about you there
to help you if you need anything. In
the future, Travis is planning to join
the Boys & Girl’s Club’s Teen
Clubhouse and to work towards his
goal of becoming a professional
soccer player.
Being named Youth of the Year is the
highest honor a Boys & Girls Club
member can receive. Since 1947,
Youth of the Year has been Boys &
Girls Clubs of America’s premiere
recognition program, celebrating the
extraordinary achievements of Club
members. Youth of the Year
recognizes outstanding contributions
to a member’s family, school,
community and Boys & Girls Club, as
well as overcoming personal
challenges and obstacles. Youth of
the Year encourages Club members
to reach their full potential by
achieving academic success, leading
healthy lifestyles and contributing to
their communities. Youth of the Year
honorees, such as Travis, are shining
examples and living proof that great
futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.
