The Black Hawk Chapter is the officially chartered representative of the Studebaker Drivers Club for the Northern Illinois area. The Studebaker Drivers Club is dedicated

to the preservation of the Studebaker name and Studebaker related vehicles produced by the company during its period in the transportation field. A sincere interest in this cause

is the only requirement for membership. Vehicle ownership is not a requirement. The Black Hawk Chapter fully supports the parent Studebaker Drivers Club, and requires

membership therein. The SDC provides the membership with yearly national meetings, a monthly publication [Turning Wheels], technical assistance, historical data, assistance in

parts and vehicle locating, and a membership roster on a national level. The Black Hawk Chapter provides the same services on a local level, in addition to monthly activities

including 10 issues of the Starliner, dinner meetings, picnics, driving events, and fellowship and technical sessions.

The Prez Sez February 23, 2008 Despite the terrible weather, spring is almost here!! It’s time to start thinking about what you need to do with your Studebaker to get her ready for summer fun. Our next meeting will be at Mr. Beef and Pizza. This is a very important meeting, as we will have the Chapter elections. The nominations committee has been working hard to develop a list of qualified candidates. The list is published elsewhere in this edition of The Starliner. Please come out and vote, this is your chapter, you have a say in what happens and how it is run. On a related issue, as we have gone through the process of developing a slate of candidates, we discovered that there are several problems with the way our Chapter By-Laws are written. This should be addressed quickly after the next election to forestall any problems or questions in the future. Thanks to Scott Stastny for working through this problem with Leigh Morris of the SDC. My time serving as your President is drawing to a close, I’ve enjoyed, and I hope you have too. See you at the next Meeting.

EDITALK By Dave Reid 2/26/0

Wow, this is a weird feeling... I’ve been writing this column for nearly FIFTEEN years, and the Election

Will Tell if I’ll keep on???? Yes, I’ve griped about doing this monthly job from time to time, but all in all, it’s

been a Fun Run. So, que sera, sera!! If Rolf wins, I’ll do whatever I can to make for a smooth transition, and

provide whatever backup he wants or needs, down the road.

Now, as to the Election: Scott Stastny and his team on the Nominating Committee are to be Commended for

the Fine Job they’ve done in getting a SLATE together. Not all positions have a race, but “several” is way

better than what we’ve seen over the past “several” elections!. This newsletter should go in Wednesday

morning’s mail at the Main Post Office, so you Should get it by Friday, at the latest - - We’d ENCOURAGE

you to Make the Meeting at Mr Beef & Pizza on Tuesday night, to Cast Your Ballot in Person, BUT if

you can’t make it, Please get the ballot in the mail TODAY [when you read this] if at all possible, so it will

Count! Frank Lillig, of the Nominating Committee, has agreed to receive mailed ballots [address on the

ballot.]

Yes, we’re in Chicagoland, but let’s keep this as above-board as possible... After discussions with Scott and

Rolf, we decided to ONLY Count Ballots Published in the Starliner, which is why you’re ALL getting this by

USPO Mail. - - If you’re Voting at Mr Beef, BRING the BALLOT with you to Cast!!!

An email just rolled in tonight from member Tom Burke, stating that the Wall Street Journal had run an op-

ed piece last week, talking about how the Big Three automakers had introduced their econo-cars [like the

Corvair and Falcon] in 1960.. Tom [rightly] felt that they should be reminded that Studebaker Beat Them All

with the Lark in 1959! [And they published his letter!] Way To GO, Tom!

Now to the rest of the mail: I got the annual mailing from IL Railway Museum, with the application for this

year’s show [printed at rear of this issue]... Please use it now, while it’s on your mind. Included in the mailing

was a letter from Mike Wende, who’s organized the car show portion of the Transportation Extravaganza for

the last 12 years of it’s 18 year run. Mike needs to retire from the position, due to health issues. Anybody

Interested?? 262-697-7474.

Bill Pienta wrote to say that he was surprised to get his 40 year Membership pin in the mail a few weeks

ago. I’ll include the rest of his note later in this issue - quite interesting [he doesn’t look that OLD!] He

also sent a note to say that you can take .PPS files [slide shows] and save them as .ppT files on your hard drive,

so as to be able to look, play, copy, whatever, individual pics.

Road America sent a flyer, with the Spring and Fall Vintage racing weekends noted as May 16-18 and

September 19-21. Www.roadamerica.com 800-365-7223

The March Car Collector has a half-page [yah, it’s in full color] ad with Two Studebakers: A ‘57 Golden

Hawk for $34,900... and a ‘63 GT Hawk: bored to 304.5, race cam, with traction and sway bars... only $39, 650.

Maybe I haven’t been watching closely enough, but here are Old Cars Weekly’s Barret-Jackson Auction’s

Page 6: us on the Internet at /blackhawk The Black Hawk Chapter is the officially chartered representative of the Studebaker Drivers Club for the Northern Illinois area.

Studebaker results: [2/21/08 issue] ‘39 PU Custom: $28,000; ‘57 Silver Hawk: $42k; ‘61 Champ PU: $24k; ‘87

Avanti Convertible: $30k.

Richard Poe, coincidentally an Indy Chapter member, wrote to say that there will be an unsponsored,

unsanctioned, totally off the record Drag Race for Orphans on Sunday, May 18th, at Brown County Dragway.

BCD is located about an hour south of Indy at 4100 Gatesville Road, in Bean Blossom, IN.

[email protected] or 812-988-2008 or www.browncountydragway.com . Spectator/pit pass: $7; Sportsman

racers: $25. Opens at 9, practice at 11, racing at 2.

Kruse is holding a 7-day auction April 1-7, 2008, in Bridgeport, NE - - mostly newer and old tractors, but the

flyer has a [‘49?] grey Stude sedan - - you can order the 20,000 lot catalog for $20, or just go to the website:

www.kruse.com or call 800-968-4444 [Nearly 3,000 tractors in the sale; 300 acre site will be sold in 4 parcels -

this is Huge!]

Well, my Friends, Keep that Greasy Side DOWN!

Some Notes on the OLD Days of the [Pre-Black Hawk] Chapter By Bill Pienta

A surprise arrived in the mail a few days ago.

A pin honoring my 40 years of membership in the SDC.

I had owned my Ermine White 1963 Hawk about 3 months when my mother

showed me an ad in the Sun Times soliciting for members of a Studebaker

club. The ad was run by Don Peterson, the first Regional Director for

Illinois. I called him and signed up. After visiting him at his house

on Austin Avenue in Chicago, Don and I became good friends. Together,

we worked on our Hawks (Don had a 1964 Bermuda Brown Hawk identical to

Jay Crites' car), went to South Bend for parts, and organized club

events like rallyes and picnics.

In those years, it was a combined Illinois-Indiana Region. Herb Read

of

Chesterton was the Indiana Director. Under the directorship of Don and

later myself, the Illinois membership grew in size, and we then divided

the two Regions. When I started working a full time job, I had less

time to run the club and new officers took it over. The National SDC

had created the concept of Chapters and those new officers created the

Blackhawk Chapter, where most of our local club's history seems to

start.

I hope the above sheds a little light on what went on in the Illinois

SDC 40 years ago, before the Blackhawk Chapter existed.
