CONGRESSIONAL RETIREMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS

2020 CONGRESSIONAL OVERVIEW
As of: June 8, 2020
• House Republicans need a net gain of 18 seats to reclaim the majority in the House of Representatives. As a reminder, Democrats picked up 40 House seats in the 2018 election.
• Most of the retiring Republicans are in states and districts that poll favorably for Republicans. Many House Republicans may be retiring because they are pessimistic about winning back the House but want their seat to remain with their party.
• There are 31 districts that President Trump won in 2016 that Democrats won in 2018. Of those districts, 22 are represented by freshman Democrats which Republicans will likely attempt to flip.
• There are 35 Senate seats up for reelection. Republicans currently hold 23 seats while Democrats hold 12 seats. Of these seats, President Trump won 15 in 2016 by 14+ percentage points.
• Senate Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take the majority in the Senate. However, the three retiring Republican senators and the one resigned Republican senator are all in likely or solid Republican elections.
• Four Republicans and one Democrat are in toss up races. Sens. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Martha McSally (R-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Doug Jones (D-AL) all face difficult reelection bids and their races are considered toss ups.
