VOCABULARY
USA has a Democratic-Republic.
We combine a Democratic form of government with a Republic
form of Government.
The Democratic comes from Ancient Athens in Greece.
The Republican form comes from Ancient Rome.
The federal Government is the highest law in the country
OUR FORM OF GOVERNMENT
The Democratic-Republic of the United States is broken up
into Three Parts
1. Executive- The President who leads the country
2. The Legislative-Congress who create laws
3. Judicial-The judges who protect the laws
4. The separation of Powers is to make sure that no one part
of the government is more powerful than the other. This is
known as Checks and Balances.
SEPARATION OF POWERS
Congress is made up of two houses…
1. The House of Representatives.
2. The Senate.
The House of Representatives has members elected by each
state based on the size of the population of that state -The
bigger the states population, the more Representatives they get.
The Senate has 100 members. Each state gets two Senators.
THE CONGRESS
The Legislative body has several powers
1. Power to create and pass laws
2. Declare war
3. Issue taxes
4. Create money
5. Create and pass amendments
6. Power to over turn a presidents veto
HOW THE CONGRESS WORKS
A member of the House of Representatives or a member of
the Senate proposes a bill .
Members of each house then vote on the bill.
66% of one house most vote yes on the bill. If it gets 66% the
bill goes to the other house to see if it gets 66% there.
If both parts of congress pass the bill with 66% the bill goes
to the President for his approval.
If he approves the bill , then it becomes a law
