So far, the construction project has had over 270 local Essex people work on site and over £6m of contracts have been awarded to local businesses. General Manager Richard Lancaster said, “Working with local people and local businesses was always a top priority for Urbaser Balfour Beatty. We have employed a range of local suppliers for concrete, steel, fencing, safety equipment amongst other things – it’s been great to share the economic benefits of this important project with our business neighbours.” Apprentices have also been employed on the site as part of Urbaser Balfour Beatty’s commitment to working with the local community. Highways works are now well underway, including the construction of a new roundabout at the site entrance. As a result, there is to be temporary routing of traffic around Courtauld Road with approved traffic diversions through Harvey Road. The road works are due to be completed by January 2014 and UBB will return Courtauld Road to two-way traffic as quickly as possible. We are working hard to get the plant ready to start treating your household rubbish later next year. Find out how the facility will work on Page 4 of this Newsletter. The Community Liaison Group is continuing to meet whilst the new facility is being built. The Chairman of the Group is Councillor Sandra Hillier (pictured left), and the Vice Chairman is local resident Cathy Burrell (pictured right at the recent steel-signing event). Other members of the Group include local business people, residents, and representatives from Essex County Council and Urbaser Balfour Beatty.

Councillor Sandra Hillier commented on the CLG, “It is a privilege to chair the Community Liaison Group for this important project. Residents are able to discuss matters directly with the UBB team, who are very responsive to

any issues raised. New signage is currently being put in place as the direct result of a request made in the CLG.”

If you have any questions or concerns please contact UBB directly or alternatively contact the Community Liaison Group.

Joe started his apprenticeship with TrAC (Training and Apprenticeships in Construction) in April 2013 and his first placement has been

with McGee Group Ltd, working on the construction of the new waste treatment facility in Courtauld Road, Basildon. Assistant Site Manager, Chris Linfoot said “Joe is such an important part of our team here on site that we really miss his efforts when he goes off to college on block release.”

Joe said, “I am just starting to find my feet on site and getting to know how everything works and I am starting to feel more confident working with tools and equipment, as well as being trusted to carry out tasks without the need for constant supervision.”

Where did you hear about the TrAC Apprenticeship? “I first heard about TrAC and the apprenticeship scheme from the job centre – I wasted no time

in getting my online application completed and submitted. The whole process was really quite straightforward.”

What is the best thing about being a Ground Works apprentice? “I enjoy the wide variety of work available to me, as well as the feeling of being busy. I get on really well with everyone I work with and they all treat me as part of the team, not just an apprentice, which is great.”

What is challenging about it? “Everything has to be perfect – there’s no room for error and we have to work to very exacting measurements and standards.”

What are your dreams for the future? “I think I’d like to end up working towards the office and managerial side of construction, something like a contracts manager. I’d quite like to be in charge of my own group of Ground Workers one day.”

If you’d like to find out more about construction apprenticeships please call TrAC on 01263 735486.

Recruitment Recruitment for the operation of the facility is due to commence in the next few months. UBB have now employed a Human Resources Advisor for the project and are keeping all CVs on file in the meantime. It is anticipated that between 60 and 70 people will be recruited for the operation of the facility. Information about the recruitment process will be made available on the website: www.ubbessex.co.uk

How will the facility work?

UBB and Essex County Council have been out and about, meeting local residents, discussing the new waste treatment facility and the importance of the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.

Here is UBB General Manager Richard Lancaster at a rather soggy Barleylands Show!

Mechanical Biological Treatment is a tried and tested approach to making the most of our waste.

Waste arrives and is tipped into the Waste Reception bunker (A). From here, a grabber lifts the waste onto a conveyor belt and it moves through a number of sorting processes (B, C, D and E). Recyclable materials are extracted and sent to the recycling market. The remaining waste is composted (F) and then aggregates are removed for recycling (G). What is left can either be safely landfilled or used as a fuel.
