It is important to keep your tires properly inflated to avoid tire blow-outs. Rotating your tires can help extend the life of your tire tread.

If battery terminals are heav-ily corroded, the quickest and easiest way to clean them is to pour carbonated soft drink over them. It will eat the cor-rosion away. Baking soda mixed with water will also do the trick

Prepare an emergency kit for your car including a flash-light, a bottle of motor oil, windshield wiper fluid, a bottle of coolant, tire inflator, jumper cables, a toolkit, roll of

paper towels, bottles of drink-ing water, trail mix or granola bars, a first aid kit, and your cellphone

Laundry pre-wash liquid re-moves tar from your car’s fin-ish A dust mop head, worn as a mitten is great for washing your car

Line your car trunk with a plas-tic rug protector to protect the carpeting. It will make clean up easier if dirty or greasy ob-jects are placed in the trunk.

How To Do A Kitchen Makeover

On a BudgetIf you are ready for a kitchen makeover but don’t have a budget to start replacing cupboards and counter tops here are some ideas to help you pep up your boring or busy kitchen.

Step 1 Find a cheery or clean color and paint the walls in the kitchen. If you like bright and cheery consider a sunny yellow, crisp blue or a clean white to liven up your cooking area. Painting is a budget friendly method, especially for a kitchen makeover, that can change the entire atmosphere of the room yet be affordable enough that nearly anyone can afford to try it.

Step 2 Switch out your old curtains or add them if your windows are bare. Choose a color that will complement your fresh new paint. Crisp white curtains against yellow or blue walls (or nearly any color walls with the exception of white) or for white walls try sunny yellow curtains or a bright, semi patterned, design to help add to your kitchen makeover and brighten it up.

Step 3 Purchase a new table cloth to complement your curtains or paint. Sometimes the little things you do are what makes the biggest difference but as an end result you have a kitchen makeover and you have not broke the bank or had to come up with a large budget.

Step 4 Consider changing out your existing kitchen light fixtures. This can really change the appearance and appeal of your kitchen. For smaller kitchens or ones with low ceilings look into recessed lighting if you have a larger kitchens or higher ceilings you may want to consider hanging light fixtures.

Step 5 Consider switching out your old faucets for something more modern and stylish. You can also switch out your entire sink if it has become dull or overly scratched and covered in unsightly stains.

Step 6 Another budget friendly kitchen makeover tip is simply changing out the hardware on your cupboards and drawers. One does not always realize how something as simple as switching from dull white or metal knobs to shiny silver buttons or handles can add more character to a room.

Step 7 Add a tiled back splash or border above your kitchen counters. This is great if you want a more permanent change, like the look of tile or just want to add a little splash of color to your existing kitchen walls.

Take Back Your ClosetWhat a difference a day makes. That’s about how long it will take you to totally refurbish your clothes closet. A weekend, perhaps, if you have to shop for an organizing system. So why do you keep putting it off?

The 5 step game plan1 Assess your needsList the categories of items that will go in your closet. Some people have very little storage space, so they might put oth-er things in the clothes closet, like sports equipment, an iron and ironing board, extra linens and photo albums.

2 PurgeBe ruthless, women wear only about 20 per cent of their wardrobes. We tend to wear clothes that are comfortable, make us look good, and fit. Yet many of us keep clothing that doesn’t fit, we don’t look good in, isn’t fashionable, holds old memories and so on. If purging sounds tough, hire a pro for a supportive, objective opinion, or ask a friend to help.

3 Deal with roadblocksYour closet should reflect who you are now – both your self-image and your lifestyle. The purging stage can bring up re-grets about yesterday (Why did I buy that?) and hopes for tomorrow (Maybe it will fit again). When dealing with those items that bring up emotional stuff, ask yourself these ques-tions:• Do I feel comfortable/good in this? • Does this fit?• Does this make me look good? • Is this still stylish or does this accurately represent my personal style?• Is this easy to maintain? • Does this suit/reflect my lifestyle (for instance, if you’ve had a career change or become a mom)?

The infrastructure of your closet should accommodate your clothes and other items so that they’re visible and acces-sible, as well as flexible enough to change as your wardrobe changes. The design of the space should take into account any physical limitations, such as back or knee problems, that will affect the height at which your clothes should be stored

(in order to avoid reaching up or bending down).

Begin by sorting your clothes into shirts/ blouses, pants, skirts, sweaters, jackets, long dresses and so on. Estimate both the amount and type of storage you need – shelving, drawers/cubbyholes for foldables, rods for hanging items, and assorted accessories like tie hooks and shoe racks. You can also sort your clothes by colour, season (store off-sea-son items elsewhere), use (work, casual, formal) and person (for shared closets).

4 ShopThen, it’s time for you to go shopping. Closet-organizing retailers often offer design services, as well as a variety of organizing systems for different budgets, and many nifty or-ganizing accessories. Don’t overlook stores such as IKEA, Home Depot, Zellers and Canadian Tire – there are lots of organizing tools out there. Some favourite ideas include wooden or good-quality plastic tubular hangers (all in the same colour); a valet rod or hook, so you can put an outfit together the night before; IKEA’s hanging nylon shoe orga-nizer (it can also be used to store baby clothes, accessories and kids’ toys); a slide-out tie and belt organizer; and clear bins and boxes (if you’re using opaque ones, paste a picture of the contents on the outside of each box).

5 Keep up the good workDo a major purge once a year if the structure is working, your closet is meeting your needs and you’re not a com-pulsive shopper you will be fine. If you’re more ambitious, do it twice a year when you’re doing the switchover of the seasons. Do a little every day – take five minutes to hang up clothes and throw the laundry in a hamper (preferably in the closet) – then it doesn’t seem like such an onerous task.

Install a programmable ther-mostat. You can save 2% on your heating bill for ev-ery 1°C you turn down your thermostat. Heat loss from windows can account for 10% to 25% of your heating bill in winter. Window coverings can be a quick and cost-effective way to cut heat loss, block cold drafts and save 5% to 15% of your energy expenses.

Clean or replace the furnace filter every 1-2 months - a dirty filter reduces the airflow and forces the furnace to run longer to heat your home.

A well-insulated attic can reduce year-round energy use by 20-60%, saving you money.

Weather-stripping provides a barrier between the fixed and movable sections of doors and windows. Apply weather-stripping to opera-ble windows, exterior doors, garage doors, and doors that lead to the attic.

Microwave Filth: Food splat-ters all over the inside of your microwave and cooks itself on after time. To easily remove this mess, place a sponge soaked in water in the micro-wave. Cook on high heat for 2 minutes, then allow it to sit without opening the microwave door, for 5 minutes. The filth is now ready to be wiped right off - no scrubbing - and your sponge is right there!

Stovetops: To prevent grease and grime from sticking to your stove top, making it easy to clean, rub it down with car wax on occasion. Coffee Grinder: Grind up a cup or so of rice in a coffee grinder to clean the grinder and sharp-

en its blades.

Stuck-On Food in Pots, Pans, and Crockpots: Fill the pan with water and place a fabric softener sheet in the water. Al-low the pan to soak overnight. The food will wipe right out!

Stains in Plastic Storage Con-tainers: Use a baking soda paste (baking soda and water) and rub into the stain. You can then rinse with vinegar (option-al) and wash normally. Another method is to place container outside on a nice sunny day and the sun actually bleaches the stain out. To avoid stains in the first place, spray container with cooking spray before put-ting things in it that stain i.e. spaghetti sauce.

R E S TA U -R A N T S10 CHEAP Home Selling Tips

Getting ready to sell? Move your property fast – and for the highest selling price possible – with these easy, affordable staging tricks. These deal-sealing changes will make your home attractive to the largest pool of potential buyers, and the best part is, you can start at any stage in the game. Who knows – you may love your home’s new look so much that you decide not to list after all!

1 Paint!Dollar for dollar, a fresh coat of paint gives you more bang for your decorat-ing buck than anything else. Even if your current palette is relatively new, any scuffs or wear marks will channel an unkempt vibe. And an unusual colour choice – even if the height of fashion – may limit your home’s appeal. So break out that roller and slap on a couple coats of crowd-pleasing warm white or sand paint.

2 Improve the lightingReplace any dated light fixtures ASAP. How can you tell if it has to go? If it’s over 15 years old and looks it – yet isn’t a vintage (50-75 years old) or antique piece (older) – it should probably go. “Retro” is not something most homebuyers are looking for. You don’t need to break the bank, just head to IKEA or Canadian Tire.

3 De-clutterTake the collectibles off the mantel, put the mismatched armchair into stor-age (or better yet, donate it) and pare your closets down to what you’re actu-ally wearing this season, packing away the rest. Ideally, all this extra stuff would head to charity (if in good, saleable condition), the garbage dump, or into storage. The more you store onsite, the more cluttered and small your home appears.

4 Give dated bathrooms a faceliftA nice bath helps sell a house but, don’t invest in a total renovation. Renos are costly, and you won’t recoup your costs unless you find your exact décor doppelganger. Bring an out-of-date bath up to speed with gleaming white walls whether via a fresh coat of white bath and kitchen paint or ceramic tile and new lighting (Home Depot excels at affordable, stylish bathroom vanity lighting). Buy neutral new shower curtains, a simple new bath mat and vanity set, and have fresh flowers in the room during open houses

5 Take down curtainsDated window treatments need to come down, pronto (if it’s over 10 years old, get rid of it). If privacy isn’t an issue, just leave the windows bare to max-imize natural light and make the room’s dimensions seem more generous. Otherwise, buy basic-issue cotton or linen drapes from Linens ‘N Things

or another well-priced retailer. Always tie drapes back during viewings and open houses.

6 Put up mirrorsMake small rooms appear bigger and dark rooms seem brighter by adding an attractive wall mirror. A boxlike dining room will benefit from a leaning floor mirror (Lowes sells well priced ones, and HomeSense often has great deals) and an entranceway more welcoming with a console mirror.

7 Update porch hard-wareIncrease your home’s curb appeal by updating the hardware on your front porch. Buy a doorknocker or bell, mailbox, kick plate, doorknob and lockset in a set or in complementary styles. Brushed nickel is a neutral finish that will never date, while oil-rubbed bronze is another favourite.

8 And the porch lightUpdate your porch light to coordinate with the new hardware, if needed. They don’t have to be an exact match or even come from the same period, but the finishes and styles should look pleasing together.

9 Spiff up the front yardRefresh your front yard according to the season. In spring, summer and fall, trim back dead plants and foliage and plant attractive annuals or perennials in flowerbeds. In winter, keep the walkway shoveled and cut back any tree or shrub branches damaged by heavy snowfall. A pair of planters flanking the front door and filled with seasonal arrangements instantly conveys pride of ownership.

10 Tend the backyardSimple fix-its will make the most of your existing yard layout. Replace any damaged boards on your deck or fence, and apply a fresh coat of paint, or stain and sealant if the finish needs it. Weed and groom your garden and add some perennials for colour when in-season. If kids’ toys are taking over the space, put some in storage. Think “tidy,” “update” and “refresh”: never do anything costly or major like adding a swimming pool or pond, which may put off potential buyers.

SatisfactionYou care for the environment, but perhaps the price of organic food makes you hyperventilate as you see your budget fly out the window. Believe it or not, a person on a budget can do plenty of things to better the environment. And often, living green saves you money. Follow these steps to live green on a budget.

1. Try washing clothes in cold water. Not only do cold-water washes get your clothes clean using less energy, but they also cause less wear and tear on clothing. The same applies to line drying your clothes. Clothes dryers use about 66 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and cost you more than the green way of hanging your clothes on a clothesline.

2. Turn the thermostat down in the winter. Save five percent on your heating budget for every degree you turn down your thermostat. Lower energy costs on cooling by depending on ceiling fans over air conditioning. Weather stripping doors and windows helps you stay comfortable by reducing drafts.

3. Replace burnt out light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Live green and save up to $30 in electricity

costs on each bulb.

4. Spend a couple of minutes less in the shower to save water and your budget. Save further with low-flow showerheads.

5. Ride public transportation to work. One of the best ways to live green is to use the bus or subway to get around. If public transportation isn’t available or convenient where you live, try bicycling or walking. And when you have to use a car, look to fuel-efficient models like hybrids.

6. Live green by shopping for food wisely. Buy in bulk, in season and bring your own shopping bag.

Ultimately, this saves energy and money.

7. Forget about those expensive cleaning products that often harm the environment as well. Look to vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for your cleaning needs.

These garage organization ideas will help you clean up the mess in your outside storage area.

You will be pleased to learn that there are many different ways you can make your garage an inviting and functional space. All you require are the right tools, time and motivation to get the job done.

There are a number of garage organization ideas that you can consider. To help you realize what your options are, the following are some suggestions for you to think about.

Garage Organization Ideas - Storage Options

Shelves – These are ideal for holding containers and random items, such as lawn, garden and cleaning supplies, etc. You can purchase a shelf case that stands freely on the floor. You also have the option of installing a wall shelving unit or even floating shelves. They are available in various sizes (length, width and height). That said, regardless of what type of shelf will be best suited to your outside storage area, you need to make sure you know exactly how much weight the individual ledges can hold. Overloading can lead to collapse and damaged items.

Hanging racks – You can obtain racks that can hang from rafters. This is good for larger items, such as bikes, lawn furniture, car tires and other items that can take up valuable floor space.

Hooks or wall tool holders – Many outdoor tools and

e q u i p m e n t , such as rakes, s h o v e l s , t r i m m e r s , brooms, etc., have handles or ropes that make them easy to hang. You can purchase actual hooks to secure these items, or you can hammer a few nails into

the wall to act as simple hangers.

Pegboards – This is often thought of as being one of the best garage organization ideas. The reason is they are one of the most flexible and low cost functional tools out there. You can easily alter how your garage is arranged by simply changing were you place the pegboards. If you have never seen one of these boards before, what you will find is that they contain many holes where you can place hooks or pegs to hang a variety of things. They are often convenient for work stations as they are ideal for keeping handy tools (ex. hammers, wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc.) in order.

Organizing your garage is a good plan because it not only helps you keep things orderly and easy to find, but it is also important for your own safety. It can be very dangerous to leave sharp items, toxic products and any objects that can be tripped on, scattered across the floor. Therefore, keep you, your family and your guests

safe by putting garage organization ideas into effect that will improve the look of your storage environment and make it a friendly place to enjoy.

Wine: When red wine is spilled on your carpet, dilute it with white wine, then clean the spot with cold water and cover with table salt. Wait ten minutes, then vacuum up the salt.

Blood Stains: Soak the stain in hydrogen peroxide, wash (don’t dry), and repeat if necessary. This tip works especially well for carpet and clothes.

Chocolate: Immediately scrape the chocolate from the carpet. Mix 1 teaspoon mild detergent, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1 quart

warm water. Apply the solution to the spot. Rinse well. Vacuum gently.

Chewing gum: Chewing gum can be a sticky mess, so harden it by pressing an ice cube against the blob of gum. Once hardened, the gum can be pulled off.

Urine: Mix 1 teaspoon mild detergent, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1 quart warm water. Apply the solution to the spot. Let the carpet dry. If the spot remains, repeat the procedure. Vacuum gently

Outdoor Living The line between indoors and outdoors continues to blur as the desire to enjoy outdoor spaces furnished with interior comforts becomes the norm. Driven by the need for peaceful respites to balance stressful lives, people are consciously carving out more time and creating sophisticated spaces for enjoying outdoor settings with family and friends.

The yearning to entertain year-round -- in every region of the country -- fuels the momentum to develop outdoor “rooms” that provide comfort and style for as long as the seasons will allow.

Manufacturers have addressed this growing trend by offering lighting, furnishings and fabrics that can be used both inside and out, with a new level of refinement that provides a graceful transition between living spaces. Comfort and the desire for low-maintenance options also are important considerations behind these design evolutions.

We can look at an outdoor room as similar to an indoor room, but with walls formed by trees, hedges or fences connecting to the home’s exterior walls. Outdoor “flooring,” in the most basic sense, can be as simple as grass, pebbles, or stepping-stones, or as elaborate as a well-designed multilevel deck or slate tiles installed on a concrete pad. Ceilings may be outlined by tree limbs, pergolas, retractable awnings or permanent roof structures.

A wonderful retreat can be created regardless of space or budget. Think about the people who will gather there, their comfort, and the mood you want to create. Consider how the outdoor area will be used. For example, regular dining furniture groups will seat a crowd, low-seating conversation groups are ideal for casual gatherings, and elevated dining and bar groups make the most of a view.

Because of the growing popularity of outdoor rooms, the selection of outdoor furniture is considerable. Look for comfortable chairs and sofas with stylish, stain- and mildew-resistant fabrics. For coffee tables and

end tables, materials are important, as glass-topped tables are joined by those with tumbled marble, tile, stone, slate, and metal--the choices are endless.

Lighting is also key element for outdoor use. Developing a more detailed lighting plan for your outside environment can create ambience and increase functionality. Executing that plan is easy with the many choices available today: general lighting and ceiling fans, accent fixtures to highlight greenery and architectural elements, specialty lighting to provide safety along pathways, and even portable lamps made just for outdoor use.

Elements that stimulate the senses, such as water and fire,

are natural components of an outdoor retreat. Think heaters, spas, water gardens and meditation areas.

Remember that beauty is ultimately in the eye of the beholder; surround yourself with furnishings and outdoor elements that make for a pleasing and functional gathering place, and you will have create the perfect outdoor room for your needs.

Homeowners Directory Ad coupon - Langley, includes Ft. Langley, Aldergrove

When driving down a residential street, have you ever noticed how some houses just seem to have it all together—from paint to plantings to proper proportions? That quality, often called curb appeal, can be somewhat elusive. From a real estate standpoint, curb appeal makes a home more valuable and easier to sell. For a homeowner, it inspires pride.

What about your own home? When you look at it objectively, does it immediately elicit a strong first impression? If not, what is it lacking?

Following are 10 techniques guaranteed to perk up your home’s curb appeal.

1) Clean up. This is often one of the least expensive yet most significant things you can do to improve the look of your home. Simply picking up the front yard, putting away unused items such as lawn furniture or other random items, and cleaning up the driveway can make a world of difference.

2) Prune and plant. Cleaning up your landscaping is another relatively easy step. Start by pruning trees and shrubs to enhance their beauty. Then do some planting. Use trees to create majesty and focal points. Tall shrubs can frame and accent interesting features of your house and yard—and conceal unsightly garbage cans and the like. Low plants and ground cover tie everything together. Brightly colored flowers in the foreground are a sure way to make a yard look lively.

3) Wash the siding. If you can work safely from the ground or a ladder, this is a job you can do yourself; otherwise, call a handyman or professional pressure-washing service. If doing the cleaning yourself, protect stone and brick walls, patios, and plants with plastic sheeting. Sweep off dirt, working from the eaves to the base. Hose off the walls, again working from the top down. If necessary, scrub with a stiff-bristle brush attached to a long handle, using a mixture of water and non-phosphate detergent. If you decide to use a pressure washer yourself, be very careful to keep the nozzle moving; holding it in one place will remove the paint.4) Paint. If cleaning doesn’t revive your house’s paint job, painting—though relatively expensive—will give you plenty of bang for your buck, transforming your house with an entirely fresh, new look. If painting the siding is a bit beyond your budget right now, consider painting just the trim.

5) Green up your lawn. Because a front lawn often carpets much of the front yard, its condition is critical to how a house looks from the street. You can start with regular mowing, raking, edging, weeding, and watering. If necessary, fertilize, de-thatch, or aerate it to get it looking great. See our detailed information on buying, planting, and maintaining your lawn.

6) Create visual interest. Fences, arbors, water features—these are just a few of the elements that can add style, character, and visual interest to your front yard.

7) Punch up the path. The walkway and/or steps that lead to your front door can do more than provide safe passage—they can set the tone for your home’s style, from casual to informal, simple to stately. Brick, concrete, stone, tile—you will not lack for choices of materials or styles.
