‘Considering that the current airport configuration has been fundamentally the same since the 1970s' 'modern airport age' began, we must rethink and reinvent the airport model to address present and future changes of the environment, thus ensuring the sustainability of this essential global connection.’Steven Cornell, WSP Group

Airport as an extension of the city and how they can become an ‘urban turbine’, condensing activities and igniting innovation.

Questions:• how can the airport better integrate into the

city• how can the terminal better integrate into the

sequence of local relationships

There are two types of airports: destination airports and hubs

destination airports they still use the hub airport model

they don’t require airline offices, training centers and services

they need to be more seamless connected to the city they are associated with

• efficiency to connect airport to city

• quality destination

• terminal: entrance, region, city hall …

urban turbine• compressing local experience into striking identity

seamlessly connected to its region:• operation ability: expandability of the airport• functionality: respecting conflicts between airport and

city• urbanism: possibility to grow the city with the airport

As a privilege I personally carried out extensive research on behalf of Dorsch Consult on the growth of cities and geopolitical issues in relation to the site of the airport.

This work is continued at Cranfield University.

This rich variety of empirical research applies for a destination airport, in this case Khartoum.

Choosing a site • manageable distance to the city• allowing airport and urban structures to

grow• respecting fertile grounds of the river Nile

at the time the rational was a linear airport corridor along the road.

on one side: urbanity on the other: agriculture

… pragmatic form of transport – in crudest sense a commercial corridor: open up the boot and start selling from the car on the road …

from terminal to planelarge spatial effects underratedin particular effective technology can bring passenger later to the plane

departure hall is effectively largely irrelevant:self check-in and baggage drop have replaced traditional processeswe see this as an opportunity

LHR T2 classic examples of a waste of space

from terminal to planeform of piers integrating retail after security is only beginning to emerge in few airports

no airports have got a relationship between gate and retail

Khartoum:not a mini version of a larger model - much more sensitive and reflective of economy

• sensitive approach to daylight• flexible building structure• elegant passenger flows• harmony with landscape and locality

• more local culture on display

• closed boarding gates uneventful

• lack of charging facilities in public areasSource: Peter Moore, Head terminal development, DXB, 2014

where is the fun of travel?• virgin plaza T3 - no one goes there • we are trapped for 20min in uninspiring gates• no retail offer • everybody has an iPad• delivery on return

for operation obsolete – terminal becomes the new high street • not over engineered: oxford street condition• space for experiments: Japanese planning regulation • viewing platform, art gallery, museum• loyalty club opportunities

transportation catalyst for retail / real estate

• the terminal as gateway to the region: a destination
