What will Docklands become by 2020? What is the vision for Docklands precinct and community?

A precinct seen as a connected and active place, with 24 hour activity, a diverse mix of uses and an active body of water.

Docklands will be a place where people not only enjoy living and working but also come to congregate in a wide range of activities, from visiting major attractors to enjoying a relaxed, unplanned day out.

Some of the critical drivers for this vision’s success are:

Growing the mixed use of the Docklands- creating and growing a diverse mix of uses to complement existing and surrounding areas;

Developing community - developing a vibrant, diverse and sustainable community that promotes a sense of belonging.

Reforestation is

... part of that community

Urban Reforestation is an exciting project in Docklands which aims to attract residents and professionals to engage in their community through in urban agriculture. Once constructed and operating, Urban Reforestation will inspire an ongoing community conversation and the development and character of the Docklands precinct.

The temporary garden proposed will be an interactive place where people can share their ideas, voice their opinions, see examples and prototypes for the reforestation garden and most of all, make use of a rejuvenated space. We hope to survey people during the 6 months we are located at the temporary garden space and find out what they want to see in the Reforestation community garden we are creating.

We aim to genuinely find out what people in the area want to create in their community, with a particular focus on the community garden in the Docklands. Other aims of the space we would like to fulfill through our presence at the space are;

• building an engaged community

• attracting families and workers to the Docklands

• attract people to spending time in the Docklands area

• advocate what a sustainable community can be

• make community gardening, having fun in the public space a new form of leisure

• show the potential the Docklands has to be a well designed urban space

• attract tourists who are interested in the international issue of urban agriculture

• add life to and character to the Docklands

• attract local residents to events, to get involved, be it urban agriculture or other sustainability centric activities.

In agreement with Lend Lease, and Vic Urban are establishing a community garden and demonstration station on the pier in Victoria Harbour. The site is bounded by walkways and bike racks, between the harbour and offices.

The temporary garden site and Urban Reforestation site

Proposal Form

The site will be reinvigorated with a small community garden, flowers and potted trees. A small studio will be placed on site to showcase sustainable living, docklands community activities, urban agriculture and the reforestation project.

Proposed Use

The temporary community garden is designed to inspire an ongoing community conversation and interaction how the Docklands space should be used, the community needs of the reforestation project and sustainable living in the everyday.The space will be an interactive place where people can share their ideas, voice their opinions and enjoy a rejuvenated space.

During the 3-6month we hope to use the site to survey people on their community needs, wishes and interests in the reforestation community garden we are creating.

• We would like to find out from residents, businesses and business people what they think of community gardens and urban food growing and think about how they would like to be involved.

• To run workshops on composting, permaculture and urban farming so people can exchange their knowledge on gardening and think about sustainable city living.

• We hope this space will inspire people to think about urban agriculture and the community garden Reforestation proposes to create in the Docklands in the next couple of years.

• The temporary community garden will contribute to City of Melbourne’s plan Delivering for Docklands 2007-10 in both residential and business community criteria.

Time frame:

• We propose to use the space for 3-6 months.

• At the close of this period we will return the site to it’s original state. The portable studio will be removed and grass replaced where necessary.

Emily grew up in the countryside near Melbourne. She loves cooking, fencing, yoga and hanging out with friends and family.

Team

who we are

Emily is co-founder Future Canvas and is the project manager for the Reforestation Project. Currently involved in the Master’s Sustainability Program at Monash University and with a background in history (Renaissance, China, Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution), she’s strongly interested in empowering communities to achieve social and ecological sustainability and teaching individuals to be designers of their everyday lives with the knowledge to make conscious actions and choices for sustainable living. She has a particular

passion for producing and creating media to inspire sustainable living. Emily realises social sustainability can be accelerated by creative individuals in the community and that the emerging designers of the future are ones that can facilitate the design process of many people. Her passion lies is bringing rural living into the urban context and this is what she would like to achieve with the Reforestation Project.

Timmah loves cupcakes, good coffee with friends and discovering the next indie film sensation before the critics do!

Timmah Ball is involved in the community engagement and consultation process of the Reforestation Project. She strongly believes that it is people not professionals who have the best ideas for the future design of communities. She is currently completing her master in urban planning with a research focus on Participatory Design and strategies to more effectively involve the community into major planning and design decisions of the built environment. Timmah also works for Earthsharing Australia as an assistant projects coordinator developing arts and cultural events to help educate young people about their environement.

Alex Kirkham - Community Engagement Officer/Communications and Media Officer

Alex’s work as a journalist over the past seven years has taken her to places where the signs of climate change and environmental degradation are readily apparent. As a community newspaper reporter in Melbourne’ inner western suburbs, she worked over a long period with the community on issues including heavy industry land contamination and inappropriate landfill practices. Working as AusAID Youth Ambassador in the Pacific, she was able to get involved in the climate, waste and resource management challenges facing developing and transitional economies.

Alex is studying at Melbourne University’s Master of Environment program and wants to use her communication skills to help to engage communities, industry and government in finding solutions to the challenges associated with these climate challenges.

Ellie is a big picture thinker. She dreams, thinks, sees and lives in pictures. She cant help making everything around her look great and is passionate about keeping the planet she lives on looking spectacular!

Ellie is involved with creating communication designs for the Reforestation project. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) Hons at Monash University in 2000. She then spent several years overseas working and experiencing the wonders of Europe until finally returning to the heart and soul of design: Melbourne. Having always been passionate about her environment, and the wonders of the universe around her, her involvement with reforestation has reinvigorated her passion about designs role in sustainability. She hopes to use her skills of visual communication design to help create culture change towards sustainability.

Damien Melotte - Production Manager

Is the owner at EcoresonanceEco Design, Designing Futures, Scenario Planning, Corporate Sustainability Project Design, Organisational Structure Design.

Damien Melotte, also strongly advocares Eco-emotional design. Pondering questions such as: What is our intuitive connection to the natural environment and can a greater understanding of it provide an impetus for a good, sustainable and regenerative living solutions.

Joanna is a stereotypical Australian-Polish political refugee, a feminist driven casual poledance enthusiast, a bleeding heart greenie, a Monash ID graduate, and an ex. full-time crime scene reconstructist for the Victoria Police

Joanna is one of the head designers (members of the design team if we have one) in the Reforestation project. Commencing her Masters of Man and Humanity (Sustainable and Humanitarian Design) at the Design Academy Eindhoven this September. With a strong interest in urban agriculture and social causes Joanna has worked on a range of projects including her Premiers Design Award winning VeggiePatch, and the thought provoking Refugee Realities interactive exhibition, created during her time with Oxfam. Currently she of the seven finalists globally in the INDEX: Aspen Design Challenge and set to present her VeggiePatch at the Copenhagen later this year, she hopes to showcase urban agriculture’s major role for saving water in Australia and worldwide.
