TRAVELLING SAFELY AND PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Safety and respect for the environment are the guidelines that inspired the Lancia Y’s design from thedrawing board onwards.

This concept has meant that the Lancia Y has been able to face and pass the strictest safety tests. So much so that, from this point of view, the car is the best in its class and has already incorporatedfeatures that will become compulsory in the years to come.

Ongoing research into new and effective features to help safeguard the environment makes theLancia Y a car to imitate for this reason as well.

All versions are in fact equipped with environmental protection devices that reduce harmful exhaustfumes in compliance with the limits provided for by current legislation.

What’s more, it is totally recyclable. It has been designed to ensure a correct ecological treatment andrecycling of all its component materials at the end of its life. When the time comes for your Lancia Yto be scrapped your LANCIA Dealership is committed to helping you to ensure that it is totally recy-cled. Nature benefits in two ways: nothing is wasted or thrown away and there is a correspondinglysmaller need for new raw materials.

SAFEGUARDING THE ENVIRONMENT

The design and production of the Lancia Y has eliminated the use of a whole series of polluting ma-terials and led to the perfection of devices that can reduce or considerably curtail harmful influences onthe environment. The Lancia Y is consequently ready to travel well ahead of the most stringent inter-national pollution control standards.

USE OF MATERIALS THAT DO NOT HARM THE ENVIRONMENT

None of the car’s components contain asbestos. Padding and the air conditioning system do not con-tain CFC’s (Chlorofluorocarbides), gases considered responsible for the destruction of the ozone layer.None of the colourings and anti-corrosion coatings of the nuts and bolts contain air- or water-table-pol-luting cadmium or chromates, but environmentally-friendly substances.

DEVICES FOR REDUCING ENGINE EMISSIONS

Three-way catalytic converter (catalytic exhaust pipe)

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons are the main harmful components inexhaust gases.

The catalytic exhaust pipe and the devices connected to it are a “miniature laboratory” where a veryhigh percentage of these components are converted into harmless substances.

This conversion is aided by minute particles of precious metals on the ceramic core enclosed in thestainless-steel container.

Lambda sensors

All are fitted with these devices. They ensure that air and fuel are constantly mixed in the correct pro-portion. This is a fundamental condition for proper engine and catalytic converter operation.

Evaporation control systems

As it is impossible to stop the build-up of petrol fumes even when the engine is not running, the sys-tem traps them in a special container holding active carbon. They are sucked in from here and burntwhile the engine is running.

THE LANCIA CODE SYSTEM

To further protect your car from at-tempted theft, it has been fitted withan electronic engine immobiliser sys-tem called “Lancia CODE”, which iscurrently considered the most effec-tive way of protecting your car againsttheft. This system is automaticallyactivated each time the engine isswitched off. Each ignition key, infact, contains an electronic devicewhich modulates a radio-frequencysignal emitted by a special aerial dur-ing ignition. The modulated signal isa “password” with which the controlunit recognises the key. Engine igni-tion is enabled only if the key is recog-nised by the system.

THE KEYS

Three types of key (fig. 1) are sup-plied with the car.

The car is always supplied with asingle A key and B or C keys depend-ing on the version:

– version without remote control,two B keys;

– versions with door lock/unlock re-mote control, one B key and one C key;

Key A, with a burgundy grip, is the“master” key. Only one of these keysis provided, and it is used to store thecodes of new keys replacing ones thathave been lost or damaged, or whenstoring duplicate key codes. Given itsimportance, it should be kept in a safeplace (not in the car) and only beused when absolutely necessary.

No repairs can be carried out onthe Lancia CODE system or the en-gine control unit if this key is lost.

Key B, with a black grip, is the keythat is to be used normally. It will:

– start the engine

– unlock/lock the doors

– unlock/lock the boot

– unlock/lock the fuel tank cap.

– deactivate the passenger airbag.

Key C, (which may be supplied asan alternative to the B key), has thesame functions as key B, plus the re-mote control function for the doorlock/unlock system.

The key is supplied together with theCODE card (fig. 2) which bears:

D - the electronic code to be used foremergency starting (see “In an emer-gency”);

E - the mechanical key code to begiven to the LANCIA Dealershipwhen ordering duplicate keys;

F - the spaces for stickers bearingthe code of any remote controls pro-vided.

The code numbers on the CODEcard and the key with the burgundygrip must be kept in a safe place.

You should keep the electronic codewritten on the CODE card with youat all times in case it is necessary tostart the car using the emergency pro-cedure.

OPERATION

Each time the ignition key is turnedto STOP or PARK, the protectionsystem will immobilise the engine.

When the key is turned to MAR atengine startup:

1) If the code is recognised, thewarning lamp ¢ on the instrumentpanel will flash briefly; this meansthat the protection system has recog-nised the key code and disabled theengine immobiliser; turn the key toAVV to start.

2) If the code is not recognised, thewarning lamp ¢ and the warninglamp will remain lit. Should this

happen, turn the key backto STOP and then to MAR; if the en-gine remains immobilised, try usingthe other keys supplied with the car.

If you are still unable to start the en-gine, use the emergency starting pro-cedure (see “In an emergency”), andtake your car immediately to thenearest LANCIA Dealership.

When travelling with the ignitionkey on MAR:

1) If the warning lamp ¢ lights upwhile the car is moving, it means thatthe system is running a self-diagnosis(e.g. due to a voltage drop).

The first time you stop you can testthe system: turn the ignition key toSTOP to switch off the engine then toMAR again. Warning lamp ¢ willswitch on and should switch off againafter about 1 second.

If the warning light remains on, re-peat the previous operations againleaving the key at STOP for morethan 30 seconds. If the fault persists, contact a LANCIA Dealership.

2) If the warning lamp ¢ flashes itmeans that the car is not protected bythe immobiliser. Contact your LAN-CIA Dealership immediately and getthem to store the codes of all the keysin the memory.

IMPORTANT The electronic com-ponents inside the key may be dam-aged if the key is subjected to sharpknocks.

IMPORTANT Each key given withthe car has its own code, differentfrom all the others, which must bestored in the memory of the system’scontrol unit.

DUPLICATE KEYS

If you ask for extra keys, rememberthat all the keys, both the new onesand those you already possess, mustbe stored in the memory (up to amaximum of 7). Go directly to yournearest LANCIA Dealership, takingwith you the burgundy “master” key,all the keys in your possession and theCODE card. The LANCIA Dealer-ship may ask you to demonstrate thatyou own the car.

The codes of any keys that are notavailable when the new storage pro-cedure is carried out will be deletedfrom the memory to prevent any lostkeys being used to start the car.

The burgundy key, plusall the other keys, and theCODE card must be

handed over to the new ownerwhen selling the car.

Ministerial homologation

With respect to the legislation inforce in each country on the use of ra-dio frequencies:

– the market specific homologationcodes are given in the chapter “Ac-cessory installation”;

– the homologation code is printedon the ignition key-remote control forthe markets which require it.

DOOR LOCK/UNLOCKREMOTE CONTROL (fig. 3)

The remote control is built into theignition key. It consists of a button Cand a LED D. The button operatesthe control and the LED flashes whilethe transmitter is sending the code tothe receiver.

This a radio-frequency remote con-trol and must be used close to the car.

IGNITION SWITCHThe key can turn through four posi-

tions (fig. 5):

– STOP: engine off, key can be re-moved and the steering column islocked. Some electrical devices can beused (e.g. sound system, central doorlock, etc.).

– MAR: drive position. All electricaldevices can be used.

– AVV: to start the engine.

– PARK: engine off, parking lightslit, key can be removed, steering col-umn locked. Press button A to turnthe key to PARK.

If the ignition switch hasbeen tampered with (e.g.someone has tried to steal

your car), get a LANCIA Dealer-ship to make sure it is still func-tioning properly before you startdriving again.

Always remove the keywhen leaving the car sothat the controls cannot be

accidentally activated. Engage thehandbrake, and if the car is facinguphill engage the first gear too. With the car facing downhill en-gage the reverse gear. Never leavechildren alone in the car.

CHANGING THE BATTERIES(fig. 4)

Change the remote control batterieswhen the LED on the remote controlflashes once only when pressed.Change the batterie with a similartype as follows: open the plastic cov-ers; insert the new batterie respectingthe polarity shown; close the plasticcovers.

Used batteries are an en-vironmental hazard. Dis-pose of them in appropri-

ate containers as prescribed by thelaw. Alternatively, take the batter-ies to a LANCIA Dealership whowill dispose of them correctly.

SEAT BELTS

HOW TO USE THE SEAT BELTS(for the front and back side seats)(fig. 16)

Pull the seat belt out gently; if thebelt jams, let it rewind for a shortstretch, then pull it out again withoutjerking.

To fasten the seat belts, take thetongue of fastener A and push it intobuckle B until you hear it click.

The lower part of the front seat beltsslides on a bar to make it easier foryou to get hold of the belt whenputting it on.

Press button C to unfasten the belts.Guide the belt with your hand as itrewinds to prevent it twisting.

The belt unwinds from the reel andautomatically adjusts to fit the pas-senger’s body, allowing him or her tomove in complete freedom. When thecar is parked on a slope the reel maylock. This is quite normal.

The reel mechanism also preventsthe webbing coming out when it isjerked or if the car brakes sharply, isin a collision or when taking bends athigh speed.

ADJUSTING THE FRONT SEATBELT HEIGHT (fig. 17)

For maximum safety, keep the back of your seatupright, lean back into it

For maximum pretensioner protec-tion, make sure your seat belt fitssnugly to your chest and hips.

Never dismantle or tam-per with pretensionercomponents. Any interven-

tion must be performed by skilledand qualified personnel. Alwayshave interventions performed at aLANCIA Dealership.

PRETENSIONERS

The Lancia Y is fitted with preten-sioners to enable the seat belts to of-fer even more effective protection. These devices “feel” that a violent col-lision is in progress, via a sensor, andcall in a few inches of webbing. Thepretensioner, therefore, ensures thebelt is adhering perfectly to the bodybefore it begins to stop the wearermoving forward.

When the seat belt locks, it indicatesthe pretensioner has been activated. The belt will not wind back even ifaccompanied manually.

A small amount of smoke may benoticed: this is not harmful and doesnot indicate the beginning of a fire.

The pretensioner needs no mainte-nance or lubrication. Any modifica-tion to its original features will nullifythe pretensioner’s effectiveness. If wa-ter or mud accidentally get into thepretensioner as a result of floods orstorms, the device must be replaced.

The belt is adjusted properly whenthe webbing passes approximatelyhalfway between the edge of theshoulder and the neck.

The seat belt can be adjusted to oneof four different heights.

To lift the belt

Lift loop B (fig. 17) to the requiredposition.

To lower the belt

Press knob A (fig. 17) and moveloop B down to the position required.

After you have made theadjustment, always makesure the slider the loop is

attached to catches firmly in one ofthe fixed positions and cannotmove. To check this, release theknob and push again so that it cancatch into place if it is not properlylatched in position.

Work involving knocks, vibrations or localisedheating (maximum 6 hours

at over 100° C) near the preten-sioner unit can cause damage oreven trigger the device. Vibrationscaused by uneven roads or acci-dentally driving over small bumps(e.g. curbs), etc., do not fall intothis category. See a LANCIA Deal-ership if work is required on thedevice.

The pretensioners canonly be used once. Afterthey have been activated,

have them replaced at a LANCIADealership.

The device was made to last 10years from the manufacturing dateshown in the specific adhesive la-bel. The pretensioners must bechanged before expiry.

Remember, in the case ofa violent collision, backseat passengers not wear-

ing seat belts also represent a se-rious danger to the passengers inthe front.

USE OF THE REAR SEAT BELTS(fig. 18)

The belts for the back seats must beworn as shown.

To ensure the correct buckle is used, the tongues of the side seat belts willnot fit into the buckle of the middleseat belt.

You should put the belt on when youare sitting upright and leaning backin your seat.

IMPORTANT The seat belt hasbeen adjusted correctly when it fitssnugly across the wearer’s hips.

The webbing must not betwisted. The upper sectionmust pass across the

shoulder and chest diagonally. Thelower part must fit closely acrossthe passengers’ hips and not theabdomen, to prevent them slidingforward (fig. 20). Do not use clips, fasteners, etc. to prevent the beltadhering to the passenger’s body.

Make sure all seat belts(both front and back) arefastened at all times! You

increase the risk of serious injuryor death in a collision if you travelwith the belts unfastened even ifyour car is fitted with the airbagsystem.

Seat belts must also be worn by ex-pectant mothers: the risk of injury inthe case of accident is much greaterfor them, too, if they do not have aseat belt on.

Of course, expectant mothers mustposition the lower part of the belt verylow down so that it passes under thestomach, (fig. 22).

If the belt has undergoneserious strain, for examplefollowing an accident, re-

place the belt with its anchorages, the anchorage screws and the pre-tensioner. Even if there is no visi-ble damage, the resistance proper-ties may have deteriorated.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE SEAT BELTS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER

1) When wearing the seat belts, al-ways ensure they are not twisted butlie flat across the chest and hips andensure that they run easily and freely.

2) Following a serious accident, re-place the belt being worn at the time, even if it does not seem damaged.

3) When cleaning the belts, washthem by hand with water and neutralsoap, rinse them and let them dry inthe shade. Do not use strong deter-gents, bleach, colouring or any otherchemical substance that could weakenthe fibres.

4) Do not allow the reels to get wet:they are only guaranteed to workproperly if they remain dry.

SEVERE DANGER:if the car has a pas-senger airbag, do

not place the child seat on thefront seat.

TRANSPORTINGCHILDREN SAFELY

For the best protection in the eventof a crash, all passengers must beseated and wearing adequate restraintsystems.

This is especially relevant for chil-dren.

A child’s head, in respect to that ofan adult, is larger and heavier in re-lation to the body. Moreover the mus-cular and bone structure is not fullydeveloped. For these reasons, childrenrequire specific restraint systems, dif-ferent to those required by adult pas-sengers.

The results of research on the bestchild restraint systems are containedin the European Standard ECE-R44.This Standard enforces the use of re-straint systems classified in fourgroups, (fig. 23):

Group 0 weight 0 - 10 kgGroup 1 weight 9 - 18 kgGroup 2 weight 15 - 25 kgGroup 3 weight 22 - 36 kg.

The groups partially overlap. This isbecause there are systems which covermore than one weight group.

All restraint systems must show ho-mologation data and control marks ona tag securely fastened to the systemand that cannot be removed.

Children weighing more than 36 kgand taller than 1.5 m are, with refer-ence to restraint systems, consideredadults and can wear normal seat belts.

We recommend using LineaccessoriLANCIA child restraint systems foreach weight group as they have beenspecifically designed for LANCIA ve-hicles.

We recommend sittingchildren on the rear seat. This is the most protected

position in the event of a crash.Never fit child restraint systems inthe front passenger seat in vehicleswith a passenger airbag. The in-flated airbag could cause even fa-tal injury, regardless of the sever-ity of the crash which triggered itoff.

Children can sit in the front pas-senger seat in cars with passengerside airbag only if the system hasbeen deactivated. In this case, al-ways make sure that the amber in-strument panel warning light is onto confirm that the airbag has beendeactivated.

GROUP 0

Babies up to 10 kg are to be seatedin a cot type seat facing backwardsand supporting the child’s head. Thisensures there is no stress on the child’sneck in sudden deceleration

The cot is secured with the seat beltsas shown in (fig. 24). The child mustbe strapped to the carrier.

GROUP 1

Children from 9 kg are to be seatedfacing forward in child seats withfront cushions, (fig. 25). The vehicleseat belt secures both seat and child.

The figure is only an ex-ample for the installation.Follow the instructions

provided with the restraint systemyou are using.

There are child restraintsfor Groups 0 and 1 whichare fastened with the vehi-

cle seat belts by means of an at-tachment on the seat back. Thechild is then secured to the seatwith specific straps. Due to theirweight, child seats can be danger-ous if they are not fitted correctly(e.g. by placing a cushion betweenthe seat and the belts). Always fol-low carefully the installation in-structions provided with the childrestraint system you are using.

GROUP 2

Children from 15 kg can be secureddirectly with the vehicle seat belts. The child seat has the purpose of po-sitioning the child correctly with re-spect to the seat belt so that the diag-onal section crosses the child’s chest(never the child’s throat) and the hor-izontal section fits snugly on thechild’s hips (and not on the child’sabdomen) (fig. 26).

GROUP 3

Children from 22 kg up only requirea cushion to lift them (fig. 27). Thesize of the child’s chest no longer re-quires a support to space the child’sback from the seat back.

Children taller than 1.5 m can wearseat belts like adults.

To sum up the safety precautionsto follow when transporting chil-dren:

1) Child restraint systems should beinstalled on the rear seat as this is themost protected area in the car in theevent of a crash.

2) Children must never be seated inthe front passenger seat in cars withpassenger seat airbag.

3) Always check that the amber in-strument panel warning light comeson after deactivating the passengerfront airbag (in model/versions wherefitted).

4) Follow the instructions for fas-tening the specific child restraint sys-tem you are using. These must beprovided by the manufacturer. Keepthe child restraint system installationinstructions with the vehicle docu-ments and this handbook. Never usea second-hand child restraint systemwithout installation instructions.

5) Always check the seat belt is wellfastened by pulling the webbing.

6) The child restraint system is de-signed for one child only. Never carrytwo children in one restraint system.

7) Always check the seat belts do notfit around the child’s neck.

8) While travelling do not let thechild sit incorrectly or release the belts.

9) Passengers should never carrychildren on their laps. No-one, how-ever strong they may be, can hold achild in the event of a crash.

10) Replace the child restraint sys-tem after an accident.

The figure is only an ex-ample for the installation.Follow the instructions

provided with the restraint systemyou are using.

WARNING LIGHTS The warning lights will come on in

the following cases:

LOW ENGINEOIL PRESSURE (red)When the pressure of the

engine oil falls below the normal level.

When the key is turned to MAR, thelight comes on but should go out themoment the engine is started.

A delay in the light going out is onlyacceptable if the engine is idling.

If the engine has been taxed heavily, the light might flash when idling butshould go out on accelerating slightly.

If the warning lamp vlights up while the car ismoving, switch the engine

off and get in touch with a LANCIADealership.

HANDBRAKE ON/LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL (red)

In three cases:

1. When the handbrake is engaged.

2. When the brake fluid level falls be-low the minimum.

3. With the > warning light to indi-cate an EBD electronic brake forcecorrector failure.

x

If the x warning lightcomes on when travelling, check whether the hand-

brake is engaged. If the warninglight stays on and the handbrakeis not engaged, stop immediatelyand contact a LANCIA Dealership.

LANCIA CODE (amber)In three ways (with ignition

key at MAR):1. A single flash - indicates that thekey code has been recognised. The en-gine can be started.2. A constant light - indicates that thekey code has not been recognised. Tostart the engine, follow the emergencystartup procedure described in the “Inan emergency” section.3. A flashing light - indicates that thecar is not protected by the immo-biliser system. The engine can bestarted however.

¢

ABS (ANTI-LOCKINGSYSTEM) FAILURE(amber)

When the ABS system is inefficient. The normal braking system continuesto work but you should have the carseen to at a LANCIA Dealership assoon as you can.

The warning lamp will light up whenyou turn the key to MAR, but itshould go out as soon as the enginestarts.

>

The car is fitted with anelectronic brake distribu-tor (EBD). If warning lights

> andx light up simultaneouslywhen the engine is running, thisindicates an EBD fault. Thismeans that violent braking couldcause early locking of the rearwheels causing the car to skid.Drive very carefully to the nearestLANCIA Dealership to have thesystem checked.

EOBD SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM(amber)

In normal conditions, the warninglight will come on when the ignitionkey is turned to MAR and should goout as soon as the engine is started. The initial lighting up shows that thewarning light is working properly.

If the warning light either stays on orcomes on while travelling:1. Fixed light - warning of a fuelfeed/ignition system failure which

If only warning light >switches on when the en-gine is running, this usu-

ally indicates an ABS fault. In suchcases the braking system is still ef-ficient, although the anti-lockingdevice does not function. The EBDsystem may also be less efficient.Go to a LANCIA Dealership imme-diately, taking care not to brakesuddenly, and have the systemchecked.

HEADLIGHTS

CORRECT POSITIONING OF THE HEADLIGHT BEAMS

The correct positioning of the head-light beams is very important for thecomfort and safety, not only of theperson driving the car, but also allother road users.

This is also covered by a specific law.

To ensure you and other drivershave the best visibility conditionswhen travelling with the headlightson, the headlights must be set pro-perly.

Have the headlight position checkedat a LANCIA Dealership and ad-justed if necessary.

ABSThe car is fitted with an ABS brak-

ing system that prevents the wheelslocking when braking, it exploits thegrip on the road surface holding thecar in the case of sudden braking.

The driver becomes aware of theABS activation through a slight throb-bing of the brake pedal and the rele-vant noise it makes.

This does not indicate brake mal-functioning, it is an indication to thedriver that the ABS is operating. It isa warning that the car is travelling atborderline road grip and therefore thespeed should be adjusted to the typeof road surface.

The ABS is an addition to the basicbraking system; in the case of a fail-ure it disables, leaving the brakingsystem in the same conditions as a ve-hicle without ABS installed.

COMPENSATIONFOR THE UPWARD SLANT OF THE HEADLIGHT BEAMS

When the car is loaded, it “slopes”backwards. This means that the head-light beam rises. In this case it is nec-essary to return it to the correct posi-tion.

The car is fitted with an electric ad-juster (fig. 84) situated at the side ofthe handbrake:

Position 0 - one or two people on thefront seats.

Position 1 - five people.

Position 2 - five people + load inluggage compartment.

Position 3 - driver + maximum per-missible load all in the boot.

fig. 84

P4C

5

Check the positioning ofthe headlight beams everytime you change the load

to be carried.

IMPORTANT In order that the ad-juster operates properly, the load inthe boot must not exceed the maxi-mum values indicated.

ADJUSTING THE BEAM OF THE FRONT FOGLIGHTS

Ask a LANCIA Dealership to checkand, if necessary, adjust the beam foryou.

G

In the case of failure, although theanti-locking system is no longer avail-able, the car braking capacity is notinterfered with.

If you have never driven a car withABS it is advised to familiarise bymaking a few preliminary trials onslippery ground, obviously maintain-ing safety conditions and respectingthe Highway Code of the countrywhere you are travelling. Before start-ing, read carefully the notes below.

The advantage of ABS as comparedwith the traditional system is that itpermits maximum manoeuvrabilityeven when pressing the brakes rightdown on roads with poor grip, pre-venting the wheels from locking.

However, this does not mean thatwith ABS the braking distance is al-ways reduced. For example, on softgravel surfaces or fresh snow on aslippery surface the distance could in-crease.

In order to get the best out of theanti-lock system when necessary, fol-low these hints.

If the ABS triggers itmeans that the car isreaching the limit of ad-

herence between the tyres and theroad surface. Slow down to adaptthe speed to the road grip.

ABS exploits the avail-able grip, but it is not ableto increase it. Therefore

drive carefully on slippery surfacesand do not take undue risks.

If there is a system fail-ure, indicated by warninglight> lighting up on the

instrument panel, drive slowly andgo immediately to a LANCIA Deal-ership to have the system checked.

When braking round a bend be verycareful, even with the aid of ABS.

However, the most important adviceis the following:

When the ABS switcheson and you feel the pedalthrobbing, no not lighten

the pressure, but keep the pedalpressed well down and do notworry. In this way you will be ableto stop within the minimum dis-tance possible, according to theroad surface.

Following these instructions you willbe always have the best braking con-ditions.

FRONT AND SIDEAIRBAGS

FRONT AIRBAGS (fig. 85)

Description and operation

The front airbag (driver and pas-senger) is a safety device which is im-mediately triggered in the event of afront impact.

It consists of an instantly inflatablebag housed in a special compartmentlocated:

– in the centre of the steering wheelon the driver’s side;

– in the dashboard on the passen-ger’s side (larger bag).

The front airbag (driver and pas-senger) is a device which protects theoccupants of the car during a head-oncollision of a medium-high degree. The system was designed to protectfrom injury caused by the body crash-ing to the steering wheel or the dash-board.

IMPORTANT Cars fitted with ABSmust always be fitted with the wheelrims, tyres and brake linings of thetype and make recommended by theManufacturer.

The system also includes the EBDelectronic brake correction (ElectronicBrake Distributor) which, through thecontrol unit and the ABS sensors fur-ther enhances the braking system.

If the x brake fluid lowwarning light comes on,stop the car immediately

and contact the nearest LANCIADealership. Fluid leaks from thehydraulic system, can compromisebrake system operation, both tra-ditional systems and systems withABS.

Europe and most other countriesworld-wide.

In the event of front collisions at lowspeed, the restraining action of theseat belts is sufficient and the airbagis not inflated.

For impacts against very deformableor mobile objects (traffic sign poles, heaps of gravel or snow, parked vehi-cles), side impacts, wedging underother vehicles or barriers (e.g. undera truck or guard rail), the airbag isnot necessary and may even be unde-sirable.

The fact that the airbag is not trig-gered in these situations, this does notsignify a malfunction.

fig. 85

PASSENGER’S FRONT AIRBAG

The passenger side airbag was de-signed and calibrated to protect a per-son wearing seat belts.

When fully inflated, the bag will fillmost of the space between the dash-board and the passenger.

In a collision, an electronic controlunit processes the signals from a de-celeration sensor and, where required, inflates the airbag.

The bag inflates instantly and actsas a soft protective barrier betweenthe front seat passengers and thestructures in front of them that couldcause injury. The bags deflate imme-diately afterwards.

A passenger not wearing the seatbelt may crash into the bag before itis fully inflated. In this case, the pro-tection is considerably decreased.

The airbag, as a consequence, is nota replacement for the use of seat beltsbut rather a complement. We recom-mend that seat belts are worn at alltimes as prescribed by legislation in

SEVERE DANGER:if the car has a pas-senger airbag, do

not place the child seat on thefront seat.

Manual deactivation

The passenger side airbag can be de-activated if it is absolutely necessaryto carry a child in the front passengerseat.

Turn the specific switch A (fig. 86)inside the glove compartment on theleft-hand side with the ignition key.

The switch has two positions:

1) Passenger side airbag on: (posi-tion ON ) instrument panel warn-ing light off. Do not carry children onthe front seat.

2) Passenger side airbag off: (posi-tion OFF ) instrument panel warn-ing light on. A child can be carried onthe front seat with a suitable restraintsystem.

The instrument panel warning lightwill stay on until the passenger

side airbag is reactivated.

SIDE BAGS (fig. 87)

The purpose of the side bag fitted inthe seat is to protect the front seatpassengers in the event of a side im-pacts of medium to high degree.

The device consists of a bag housedin the front seat backs which imme-diately inflates. This solution ensuresthat the bag is in an optimal positionregardless of the seat position.

In the event of a side impact, thecontrol unit processes the signals froma deceleration sensor and fires the sidebag.

The bag inflates instantly and actsas a soft protective barrier betweenthe front seat passengers and cardoor. The bags deflates immediatelyafterwards.

In the event of side collisions at lowspeed, the restraining action of theseat belts is sufficient and the airbagis not inflated. Also in this case, seatbelts should be worn at all times. They ensure the passenger is correctlypositioned in the seat in the event ofside crash and prevent the passengerfrom being projected from the vehiclein the event of a very violent crash.

The airbag, as a consequence, is nota replacement for the use of seat beltsbut rather a complement. We recom-mend that seat belts are worn at alltimes as prescribed by legislation inEurope and most other countriesworld-wide.

GENERAL WARNINGS

The front and/or side airbags(where fitted) can be triggered ifthe car is subjected to consider-able crashes or involved in an ac-cident concerning the underbodyareas, such as a violent impactagainst steps, kerbs or projectingobjects fastened to the ground, falling into large holes or dips inthe road surface.

When the airbag is fired it emitsheat and a small amount of pow-der. This is not harmful and doesnot indicate the beginning of a fire.Furthermore, the surface of the in-flated bag and in the passengercompartment may be covered witha powdery residues. This powdermay irritate skin and eyes. In theevent of exposure, wash with mildsoap and water.

Go to a LANCIA Dealership assoon as possible if the warninglight û comes on when travelling(to signal a fault) to have the prob-lem repaired.

The airbag system is guaranteedfor ten years. Contact a LANCIADealership as the expiry data ap-proaches.

After an accident which triggeredthe airbags, go to a LANCIA Deal-ership to have the entire safety sys-tem, the electronic control unit, theseat belts and the pretensioners re-placed. The Dealership will alsocheck the intactness of the electri-cal system.

Any diagnostic, repair or re-placement operations concerningthe airbag system must exclusivelybe carried out at a LANCIA Deal-ership.

If you are having the carscrapped, have the airbag systemdeactivated at a LANCIA Dealer-ship first.

If the car changes hands, the newowner must be made aware of theindications given above and begiven this Owner Handbook.

The pretensioners (if electroni-cally controlled), front airbags andside airbags are activated by theelectronic control unit accordingto the type of impact. Conse-quently, missed activation of oneor more system components doesnot indicate a fault in the system.

The instrument panelwarning light û shouldcome on when the ignition

key is turned to MAR and go outafter approximately four seconds.Immediately contact a LANCIADealership if the warning light ei-ther does not come on or stays onor comes on when travelling.

G

It is important to remem-ber that the airbag can befired even when the engine

is not running and the key is atMAR if it is hit by another vehicletravelling at suitable speed. As aconsequence, LANCIA recom-mends sitting children in theirspecific restraint systems on theback seat, which is the most pro-tected position possible. On thecontrary, the airbags will not befired if the car is crashed intowhen the key is not inserted orturned. Consequently, in this case, the fact that the system is not fireddoes not indicate a fault.

Always drive with bothhands on the rim of thesteering wheel so that the

airbag is free to inflate during ahead-on collision, and protect youfrom serious injury. Do not drivewith your body bending towardsthe steering wheel, but sit in anupright position with your backresting against the seat.

If an attempt has beenmade to steal the car, or ifit has actually been stolen

or has been vandalised in any wayor subjected to flooding, have theairbag system checked over at aLANCIA Dealership.

Do not apply stickers orother objects to the steeringwheel or to the dashboard

on the passenger’s side. Do nottravel with objects on your lap or infront of you nor with a pipe, pencilor similar between your lips; youcould seriously hurt yourself if theairbag inflates in a collision.

The correct operation offront airbags, side airbagsand pretensioners is en-

sured only if the car is not over-loaded. Do not exceed the maximumpermitted loads (see “Weights” in“Technical specifications”).

When the passenger’sfront airbag is active (pas-senger front airbag deacti-

vation switch at ON), the warn-ing light will come on for approx-imately four seconds and flash forother four seconds when the igni-tion key is turned to MAR to re-mind the driver than the passen-ger’s front and side airbags (wherefitted) will be fired in the event ofa crash. The warning light shouldgo out immediately afterwards.

The airbag does not re-place seat belts but ratherincreases their effective-

ness. Furthermore, the airbag isnot fired in the event of low speedfront collisions, side collisions,rear-end shunts and roll-overs. Inthese cases, the passengers areonly protected by the seat beltswhich for this reason must alwaysbe fastened.

agnosis) system fitted in this car com-plies with Directive 98/69/CE (EURO3).

This system continuously monitorsthe vehicle emission system compo-nents. Furthermore, the system warnsthe driver of deterioration concerningthe emission system components bymeans of the warning light on the

instrument panel.

The objective is to:– monitor system efficiency;– warn when failures can increase

emissions over the threshold estab-lished by the European regulations;

– warn of the need to replace deteri-orated components.

Furthermore, the system is equippedwith a connector for interfacing withspecific tools used to read the errorcodes stored in the control unit mem-ory along with a set of diagnostic andengine specific parameters.

IMPORTANT After eliminating theproblem, your LANCIA Dealershipwill run a bench test to fully check thesystem. In some cases, a long road testmay be required.

Contact a LANCIA Deal-ership as soon as possibleif the warning light ei-

ther does not come on when thekey is turned to MAR or comes on,with fixed or flashing light, whentravelling.

To open the fuel filler cap:

1) Hold the cap in position (still)and turn the key anticlockwise.

2) Turn the cap approximately onequarter of a turn anticlockwise andremove it.

IMPORTANT The air-tight seal ofthe cap may lead to a slight pressureincrease in the tank. A hissing soundwhen the cap is removed is, therefore, quite normal.

IMPORTANT To prevent the keyfrom being lost it cannot be removedfrom the cap until the cap is put back.

3) When filling, position cap C onhook D on the flap, as shown in theillustration.

To close the fuel filler cap:

1) The cap is provided with a bayo-net type lock. Position the cap (withits key) and turn it clockwise untilyou hear one or more clicks.

DRIVING YOUR CAR

To help you handle your car in the best andsafest possible way, and above all use it to its fullestpotential, we have given you some hints in thischapter on “what to do, what not to do and whatto avoid” when at the wheel of your Lancia Y.

Most of the time, these suggestions apply toother cars as well. Sometimes, however, the tipmay apply to an exclusive Lancia Y feature. Youare therefore strongly recommended to pay theclosest attention to this section for helpful hintson optimum driving practices and usage of the carthat will help you get the most out of your car.

STARTING THE ENGINE

If the engine does not start at thefirst attempt, return the ignition keyto STOP before trying to start the en-gine again.

If warning light ¢ remains lit to-gether with the warning light when the ignition key is at MAR,turn the key to STOP and then toMAR; if the warning light still re-mains lit, try with the other keys pro-vided with the car.

If you are still unable to start the en-gine, follow the emergency startupprocedure (see “Emergency startup”in the section “In an emergency”) andgo to the nearest LANCIA Dealer-ship immediately.

IMPORTANT Do not leave the ig-nition key at MAR when the engine isoff.

The ignition switch fits a safety de-vice. If the engine does not start at thefirst attempt, return the ignition keyto STOP before trying to start the en-gine again.

In a similar way, you will not be ableto turn the key from MAR to AVVwhen the engine is running.

It is dangerous to let theengine run in a garage orother closed area. The en-

gine consumes oxygen and givesoff carbon dioxide, carbon monox-ide and other poisonous fumes.

Do not touch the highvoltage cables (spark plugcables) when the engine is

running.

During the running-inperiod do not push the carup to its highest perfor-

mance (e.g. sudden accelerations, very long drives at high speed, sharp braking etc.)

PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT Do not press on theaccelerator before the engine is run-ning.

1) Make sure the handbrake is up.

2) Put the gear lever into neutral.

3) Press the clutch pedal down to thefloor.

4) Turn the ignition key to AVV andlet it go the moment the engine starts.

Page 73: Uputstvo Lancia y

70

G

HOW TO WARM UP THE ENGINE AFTER IT HAS JUST STARTED

– Begin to move forward slowly let-ting the engine turn over at mediumrevs. Do not accelerate abruptly.

– Do not push the engine to its limitfor the first few kilometres. You arerecommended to wait until the watertemperature has reached 50°C to60°C (pointer moves slightly from itsinitial position).

EMERGENCY STARTING

If the Lancia CODE system fails torecognise the code transmitted by theignition key (warning lamp ¢ on in-strument panel lit with a fixed light),you can start the engine by followingthe emergency procedure using thecode written on the CODE card.

See the section “In an emergency”.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

Turn the ignition key to STOP whilethe engine is idling.

Remember that as long asthe engine is not running, the brake booster and

power steering do not work. Youtherefore have to use considerablymore effort on both the brakepedal and the steering wheel.

Bump starting by push-ing, towing or rollingdownhill must be avoided

at all costs. This way of startingcould cause a rush of fuel into thecatalytic exhaust pipe and damageit beyond repair.

BUMP STARTING

A quick burst on the ac-celerator before turning offthe engine serves ab-

solutely no practical purpose, andwastes fuel.

IMPORTANT After a taxing drive itis better to allow the engine to “catchits breath” before turning it off by let-ting it idle to allow the temperature inthe engine compartment to fall.

HANDBRAKE

The handbrake lever is situated be-tween the two front seats.

To put the handbrake on, pull it up-wards until the vehicle is blocked;normally four or five clicks are suffi-cient on flat ground, whereas seven oreight might be necessary when park-ing on steep slopes with the vehicleladen.

IMPORTANT If this is not the case, take the car to a LANCIA Dealer-ship to have the handbrake adjusted.

When the ignition key is turned toMAR and the handbrake pulled up,the warning lamp x will light up onthe instrument panel.

To release the handbrake:

1) Slightly lift the handbrake andpress release button A (fig. 1).

2) Keep the button pressed in andlower the lever. Instrument panelwarning light x will go out.

3) To prevent accidental movementof the car, when releasing the hand-brake, keep the foot brake depressed.

PARKINGStop the engine, engage the hand-

brake and engage a gear (first gear ifthe car is faced uphill or reverse if itis faced downhill). Leave the wheelssteered. Block the wheels with awedge or a stone if the car is parkedon a steep slope.

If the car is parked on a steep slope, block the wheels with a wedge or astone.

Do not leave the ignition key atMAR because it drains the battery.

Always remove the key when youleave the car even if it is only for a fewmoments.

Do not leave children un-supervised in the car.

GEAR USETo engage the gears, press down the

clutch and put the gear lever into oneof the positions shown in the diagram(fig. 2) (the diagram is also on thegear lever knob).

To engage reverse (R), wait for thecar to come to a standstill. From neu-tral, lift the sliding ring A (fig. 2) un-der the knob and shift the lever to theright and backwards at the sametime.

IMPORTANT The reverse gear canonly be engaged when the car is sta-tionary. With the engine running waitfor at least 2 seconds with the clutchfully down before engaging the re-verse gear to avoid grating the gearsand damaging them.

To change gear properlyyou must push the clutchpedal fully down. It is

therefore essential that there isnothing under the pedals: makesure mats are lying flat and do notget in the way of the pedals.

Do not drive with yourhand resting on the gearlever. Although the force

you exert by doing this is veryslight, it will, in the long run, wearout the components inside thegearbox.

AT THE FILLINGSTATION

FUEL

Fill petrol engine cars only with un-leaded petrol with a minimum octanenumber of 95.

Fuel tank capacity: 45 litres includ-ing a reserve of 5 - 8 litres.

Never put even the tiniestamount of leaded fuel inthe tank, even in an emer-

gency. You would damage the cat-alytic converter beyond repair.

ENGINE OIL

Check the level: see the “Car main-tenance” section.

The distance between the MIN andMAX marks on the dipstick is equiv-alent to about one litre of oil.

Use SAE 10W-40 oil for tempera-tures down to –25°C.

For temperatures lower than –20°C,we recommend using SELENIAPERFORMER SAE 5W-30.

SAFE DRIVINGIn designing the Lancia Y, we made

every effort to come up with a carable to provide driver and passengerswith top-class levels of safety. Never-theless it is always the behaviour ofthe person at the wheel that deter-mines road safety.

Below you will find some simple tipsto help you travel in safety under dif-ferent conditions. You will no doubtbe familiar with many of them al-ready but it will be useful to readthem all carefully.

BEFORE GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL

– Make sure all lights including theheadlights are working properly.

– Adjust the position of the seats, steering wheel, driving and door mir-rors properly for the best driving po-sition.

– On long journeys, it is a good ideato slightly alter the lumber supportand/or seat inclination to vary theweight on the spine and therefore re-duce tiredness and strain.

– Carefully adjust the head restraintsso the back of the head and not thenape of the neck is supported.

– Carefully adjust the height of theseat belts to suit the wearer’s stature(see the instructions given in the sec-tion “Getting to know your car - seatbelts”).

– Make sure that nothing (mats etc.)get in the way of the pedals.

– Make sure that any child restraintsystems (child seats, carriers, etc.) areproperly fixed to the rear seat. Followthe indications given in “Transport-ing children safely” in the section“Getting to know your car”.

– Make sure that objects are care-fully arranged in the boot so they willnot fly forward if you have to brakesharply.

– Avord placing light-coloured arti-cles or papers on the object tray whichmay be reflected on the windscreen.

– Do not eat a heavy meal beforetravelling. Light eating will help keepyour reflexes prompt. Above all, donot have anything alcoholic to drink. The use of some drugs may affectyour driving, read the relevant in-structions sheet carefully.

Remember to periodically checkwhat is specified in the “Repeatedchecks and checks before long trips”paragraph given in this section.

Page 79: Uputstvo Lancia y

76

G

Consider the space re-quired by extra mats: evena small problem to the

braking system may indicate addi-tional brake pedal stroke is re-quired with respect to normal.

Water, ice and salt sprin-kled on the road depositon the brake disc and re-

duce effectiveness the first timeyou brake.

WHEN TRAVELLING

– The first rule of safe driving is pru-dence.

– Prudence also means putting your-self into a position where you can pre-dict wrong or imprudent behaviourfrom other drivers.

– Stick closely to the rules of theroad in the particular country wherethe car is being driven and, above all,do not exceed speed limits.

– Ensure that, besides yourself, allthe other passengers in the car havetheir seat belts fastened, that childrenare sitting in the appropriate childseats and any animals are in specialcompartments.

– You should be physically fit andmentally alert before setting out onlong journeys.

Driving when you are notmentally alert, drunk, un-der the influence of drugs

or certain medicines is dangerousboth for you and other road users.

Always fasten both frontand back seat belts in-cluding child seat seat belt

if fitted. Travelling with the seatbelts unfastened increases the riskof injury or death if you are in acollision.

Pay attention when in-stalling additional spoil-ers, alloy wheel rims and

caps that are not standard. Theycould reduce the brake ventilationand as a consequence, the brakingefficiency if you brake suddenlyand repeatedly, or when drivingdownhill.

Do not drive with objectson the floor in front of thedriver’s seat. Objects

could get stuck under the pedalsmaking accelerating and brakingimpossible.

Page 80: Uputstvo Lancia y

77

G

– Only use main-beam headlightswhen you are driving outside townand when you are sure they do notannoy other drivers.

– Dip your headlights (if on) as soonas you see cars coming in the other di-rection and pass them with the head-lights dipped.

– Keep all lights clean.

– Be careful of animals crossing theroad when driving in the country.

DRIVING IN THE RAIN

Rain and wet road surfaces spelldanger.

All manoeuvres are more difficult ona wet road because the grip of thewheels on the tarmac is greatly re-duced. This is why braking distancesare much longer and roadholding islower.

DRIVING AT NIGHT

If you are driving at night these arethe main rules to follow:

– Drive especially carefully: it isharder to drive at night.

– Slow down especially if the road isnot lit.

– At the first signs of sleepiness, stop:continuing would be a risk for your-self and everybody else. Only startdriving again when you have hadenough rest.

– Keep a greater safety distancefrom the cars in front of you thanduring daylight hours: it is hard tojudge how fast other cars are goingwhen all you can see are their lights.

– Make sure the headlight beams areproperly positioned: if they are toolow, they reduce visibility and strainyour eyes. If they are too high theycan dazzle other drivers.

– Do not drive too many hours at atime but stop at intervals to stretchyour legs and recover your energies.

– Make sure the air in the car is be-ing changed continuously.

– Never coast downhill (i.e. with theengine off): if you do, you lose the aidof engine brake, power brakes andpower steering so that braking andsteering require greater effort.

– Never coast downhill (i.e. with theengine off): if you do, you lose the aidof engine braking and power.

Page 81: Uputstvo Lancia y

78

G

Here is some advice for driving inthe rain:

– Reduce speed and maintain agreater safety distance from the carsin front.

– If it is raining particularly heavily, visibility is also reduced. In thesecases, switch on the dipped headlightseven if it is still daylight so you can beseen more easily.

– Do not drive through puddles atspeed and hold on tightly to thewheel: a puddle taken at high speedmight cause you to lose control of thecar (“aquaplaning”).

– Move the ventilation controls tothe position for demisting the win-dows (see the section “Getting toknow your car”), to avoid visibilityproblems.

– Periodically check the condition ofthe windscreen wiper blades.

DRIVING IN FOG

– If the fog is thick, do not start outon a journey unless you absolutelyhave to.

If driving in mist, blanket fog orwhen there is the danger of fogpatches:

– Keep your speed down.

– Turn on the dipped headlights, rear foglights and front foglights, iffitted, even during the day. Do notdrive with your headlights at full-beam.

– Remember that fog also means thetarmac is wet and therefore manoeu-vres of all kinds are more difficult andstopping distances are longer.

– Keep a good distance from the carsin front of you.

– As far as possible, avoid spurts ofspeed or sudden deceleration.

– Do not overtake other vehicles ifyou can help it.

– If you are forced to stop your car(breakdown, limited visibility etc.)try to stop off the road. Turn on thehazard lights and, if possible, thedipped headlights. Rhythmicallysound the horn if you realise anothercar is coming.

IMPORTANT On stretches of roadwith good visibility, switch off yourrear foglights; the brightness of theselights could annoy the people travel-ling in the cars behind.

79

G

DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS

– When driving downhill use the en-gine braking effect by engaging a lowgear so as not to overheat the brakes.

– Under no circumstances shouldyou drive downhill with the engine offor with the car in neutral, let alonewith the ignition key out.

– Drive at a moderate speed withoutcutting corners.

– Remember that overtaking whilegoing uphill is slower and therefore re-quires more free road. If you are beingovertaken while driving uphill, makeit easier for the other vehicle to pass.

DRIVING ON SNOW OR ICE

Here are some tips for driving inthese conditions.

– Before starting off, check that thewindscreen wiper blades are not stuckto the windscreen.

– Remove any snow from the climatecontrol system air intake.

– Keep your speed down.

– Use chains or snow tyres if theroads are covered in snow, see the re-spective paragraphs in this chapter.

– Do not keep the engine running forlong periods in deep snow as the snowcould push exhaust gases into the pas-senger compartment.

– Mainly use the braking effect ofthe engine and under all circum-stances avoid braking sharply.

– When braking in a car not fittedwith ABS, avoid the wheels locking byvarying the pressure you exert on thebrake pedal.

– Do not accelerate suddenly andavoid swerving.

– In the winter, even apparently dryroads may have icy patches. Be care-ful therefore when driving overstretches that do not get much expo-sure to the sun or that are lined bytrees and rocks, where ice might nothave melted.

– Keep a good distance from the ve-hicles in front.

DRIVING WITH ABS

The car can be fitted with a wheelanti-locking system (ABS) and withelectronic brake correction (EBD) sys-tem.

ABS is a braking system that essen-tially offers two advantages:

1) It prevents wheel locking andconsequent skidding in emergencystops, particularly when the road doesnot offer much grip.

2) It makes it possible to brake andsteer at the same time so you canavoid unexpected obstacles and directthe car where you want while brak-ing. The extent to which this can bedone will depend on the physical lim-its of the tyre’s total grip.

To get the most out of ABS:

– During emergency stops or whengrip conditions are poor, you will feela slight pulsation on the brake pedal. This is the sign that the ABS is work-ing. Do not release the brake pedalbut continue to press so as not to in-terrupt the braking action.

– ABS prevents the wheels fromlocking, but it does not increase ac-tual grip conditions between tyre androad. Therefore, even if your car is fit-ted with ABS, respect the safety dis-tance from the car in front of you andkeep your speed down when drivinginto bends.

ABS serves to increase the controlla-bility of the car, not to enable you togo faster.

If warning light >switches on when the en-gine is running, this usu-

ally indicates an ABS fault. In suchcases the braking system is still ef-ficient, although the anti-lockingdevice does not function. The EBDsystem may also be less efficient.Go to a LANCIA Dealership imme-diately, taking care not to brakesuddenly, and have the systemchecked.

The car is fitted with anelectronic brake corrector(EBD). If warning lights >

and x light up simultaneouslywhen the engine is running, thisindicates an EBD fault. Thismeans that violent braking couldcause early locking of the rearwheels causing the car to skid.Drive the car extremely carefullyto the nearest LANCIA Dealershipto have the system checked.

The overall state of the car is an im-portant factor which has a marked in-fluence over fuel consumption anddriving comfort and on the life spanof your car. For this reason careshould be taken to maintain your ve-hicle by carrying out the necessarychecks and regulations in accordancewith the specifications given in theServize Schedule (see spark plugs, idle, air filters, timing sections).

Tyres

Tyres should be checked at leastevery four weeks: if the pressure is toolow fuel consumption increases as theresistance to the rolling movement ofthe tyre is greater. In this state, tyrewear is increased and car handlingsuffers which will affect safety.

Unnecessary loads

Do not travel with too much luggagestowed in the boot. The weight of thecar (especially when driving in town)and its trim greatly affects consump-tion and stability.

Roof/ski racks

Remove roof or ski racks from theroof of the car as soon as they are nolonger needed. These accessories re-duce the aerodynamic penetration ofthe car and will increase consump-tion. When transporting particularlylarge objects, use a trailer where pos-sible.

Electrical devices

Use the electrical devices for the nec-essary time only. The heated rear win-dow, supplementary lights, wind-screen wipers, heating system blowerrequire large amounts of energy and, increasing the request for power alsoincreases fuel consumption (up to+25% when driving in built-up areas).

Air conditioner

The air conditioner is an additionalload which greatly affects the engineleading to higher consumption (on av-erage up to +20%). When the tem-perature outside the car permits it,use the air vents where possible.

Spoilers

The use of aerodynamic optional ex-tras which are not certified for specificuse on the car, may reduce the aero-dynamic penetration of the car andincrease consumption.

G

Gear selection

As soon as the traffic and road con-ditions allow it, shift to a higher gear.Using a lower gear to liven up accel-eration greatly increases consumption. In the same way, improper use of thehigher gears will increase consump-tion, emissions and wear and tear onthe engine.

Top speeds

Fuel consumption increases consid-erably as speed increases. For exam-ple, when accelerating from 90 to120 kph, fuel consumption increasesby about +30%. Your speed shouldbe kept as even as possible and su-perfluous braking and accelerationavoided as this increases both con-sumption and emissions. A “soft” wayof driving should be adopted by at-tempting to anticipate manoeuvres toavoid imminent danger and to keep asafe distance from the vehicle in frontin order to avoid braking sharply.

Acceleration

Accelerating violently increasing therevs will greatly affect consumptionand emissions: acceleration should begradual and not exceed the maximumtorque.

CONDITIONS OF USE

Cold starting

Frequent cold starting will not en-able the engine to reach optimal run-ning temperature. It follows thereforethat consumption will be higher (from+15% to +30% in built-up areas) aswill the production of toxic emissions.

STYLE OF DRIVING

Starting

Do not warm the engine when thecar is stationery or at high or low revs:in this way the engine will warm upgradually increasing consumption andemissions. You should drive off slowlystraight away avoiding high revs sothat the engine will warm up morequickly.

Unnecessary actions

Avoid revving the engine whenstopped at traffic lights or beforeswitching off the engine and avoiddoubling the clutch as these actionshave no purpose on modern vehiclesand serve only to increase consump-tion and pollution.

83

G

Traffic and road conditions

Heavy traffic and higher consump-tion are synonymous; for example, when driving slowly with frequent useof the lower gears or in large townswhere there are numerous trafficlights.

Winding roads, mountain roads andbumpy roads also have a negative ef-fect on consumption.

Enforced halts

During prolonged hold-ups (trafficlights, level crossings) the engineshould be switched off.

LOOKING AFTER EMISSIONCONTROL DEVICES

The correct use of pollution controldevices not only ensures respect forthe environment but also has an effecton the car’s performance. Keepingthese devices in good condition istherefore a fundamental rule for dri-ving that is easy on your pocket andon the environment too.

The first step to take is to follow theService Schedule to the letter.

Use only unleaded petrol.

If you have trouble starting, do notkeep turning the ignition key for longperiods. Be especially careful to avoidbump starting the car by pushing, towing or rolling down hill: these areall manoeuvres that can damage thecatalytic exhaust.

CHEAP RUNNINGTHAT RESPECTSTHE ENVIRONMENT

Environmental protection has beenone of the guiding principles in theproduction of the Lancia Y. It is no ac-cident that its pollution control equip-ment is much more effective than thatrequired by current legislation.

Nonetheless, the environment can-not get by without a concerted effortfrom everyone.

By following a few simple rules youcan avoid harming the environmentand often cut down fuel consumptionat the same time.

On this subject, a few useful tipshave been given below to supplementthose marked by symbol # at variouspoints of the handbook.

You are asked to read both the for-mer and latter carefully.

Page 87: Uputstvo Lancia y

84

G

For emergency starts use only anauxiliary battery.

If the engine begins to “loose itssmoothness” when travelling, con-tinue your journey but reduce the de-mands you are making on the engineand have the car seen to at a LANCIADealership as soon as you can.

When the instrument panel fuel re-serve warning light comes on, fill upas soon as possible. A low level of fuelcan cause an uneven supply of fuel tothe engine with the inevitable increasein the temperature of the exhaust gasand serious damage to the catalyticconverter.

Never run the engine with one ormore spark plugs disconnected, evenfor testing purposes.

Do not warm up the engine by let-ting it idle for a while before movingoff unless the outside temperature isvery low and, even in this case, onlydo so for less than thirty seconds.

When functioning nor-mally the catalytic con-verter reaches high tem-

peratures. For this reason do notpark the car over inflammablematerial (grass, dry leaves, pineneedles etc.): fire hazard.

Failure to heed these pre-cautions could cause afire.

Do not install other heat shields anddo not remove those already fitted tothe catalytic converter and exhaustpipe.

Do not allow anything to be sprayedonto the catalytic converter, Lambdasensor and exhaust pipe.

TOWING A TRAILERIMPORTANT The car must be fit-

ted with a homologated tow hitch andsuitable electrical system for towing acaravan or trailer.

Have the tow hitch fitted by an ex-pert who will issue specific documen-tation for use on roads.

Fit special and/or additionalrearview mirrors in accordance withthe highway code.

Remember that towing a trailermakes it harder for the car to climbthe maximum gradients specified.

Engage a low gear when drivingdownhill rather than constantly brak-ing.

4C068-089 ING 11-03-2008 11:59 Pagina 84

Page 88: Uputstvo Lancia y

85

G

The ABS system withwhich the car may be fitteddoes not control the brak-

ing system of a trailer. Special caremust therefore be taken on slip-pery surfaces.

Under no circumstancesmodify the car’s brakingsystem for trailer braking

control. The trailer’s braking sys-tem must be completely indepen-dent of the car’s hydraulic system.

The weight the trailer exerts on thecar’s tow hitch coupling reduces thecar’s carrying capacity by the sameamount.

In order to be sure you are not ex-ceeding the maximum towing weight(given on the car’s registration pa-pers), you have to take into accountthe trailer’s weight fully laden in-cluding the accessories and personalluggage.

Do not exceed the speed limits fortowing a trailer in the country you aredriving in. In any case, do not exceedthe top speed of 100 km/h.

SNOW CHAINSThe use of snow chains is regulated

by the legislation in force in the coun-try the car is driven in.

The chains may only be applied tothe drive wheel tyres (front wheels).

Use only low profile chains (maxi-mum height off the tyre: 12 mm).

Check the tautness of the chains af-ter driving some twenty to thirty me-tres.

IMPORTANT As the spare wheel issmall (space-saver), it is not possibleto fit snow chains to it. If a front tyreis punctured, first exchange a rearwheel with the spare tyre and thenchange the flat tyre with the rear wheelthus removed. This way there will betwo ordinary wheels at the front andthe snow chains can be fitted.

Remember that the wheels shouldalways be exchanged on the same sideof the vehicle; never change wheelsover from one side of the car to theother.

SNOW TYRESThese are tyres that have been

specifically designed for driving onsnow and ice, to be fitted in place ofthe car’s standard tyres.

Only replace with the type of tyre in-dicated in the table below:

LANCIA Dealership is pleased tooffer advice concerning the choice ofthe most suitable tyre according to theuse required by the Customer.

Refer to the pressure of standardtyres of the same size to find the cor-rect inflation pressure: see “Tyre pres-sure” in the “Technical Specifica-tions” section.

The winter characteristics for snowtyres are considerably less when thetread is less than 4 mm. In such casesit is safer to replace them.

The snow tyre characteristics aresuch that, with normal environmen-tal conditions or on long journeys onthe motorway their performance islower than that of standard tyres.

Keep you speeddown when snowchains are fitted.

Avoid potholes, steps and kerbs.Do not drive for long distances onroads free from snow as not todamage the car and the road sur-face.

The 1.2 16V MN red car isfitted with 195/50 R15 82Htyres; snow chains cannot

be fitted on these tyres. Alterna-tively, have 185/60 R14 82H tyresfitted on which snow chains can bemounted. If it is desired to usesnow tyres see the section “Snowtyres”.

87

G

The maximum speed ofsnow tyres with a “Q” in-dication must never ex-

ceed 160 km/h and in any casemust always observe the regula-tions of the Highway Code.

Therefore they should only be usedfor the purpose for which they havebeen homologated (“Q” indicates thatthe tyre is designed for a speed of lessthan 160 km/h).

IMPORTANT When using snowtyres with a maximum speed indexthat is less than the capacity of the car(increased by 5%), place in the pas-senger compartment, well in sight, awarning that indicates the maximumspeed permitted by the snow tyres (inaccordance with the EC Directive).

Fit four identical tyres (same makeand tread) on the wheels to ensuresafety when driving and when brak-ing as well as easy handling.

Do not reverse the direction of rota-tion of the tyres.

STORING THE CARDo the following if the car is not to

be used for more than a month:

– Park the car in covered, dry and ifpossible well-ventilated premises.

– Engage a gear.

– Remove the cables from the bat-tery terminals (first remove the cableto the negative terminal) and checkthe battery charge. This check shouldbe carried out once every threemonths while the car is in storage.Recharge the battery if the no-loadvoltage is less than 12.5V.

– Make sure the handbrake is notengaged.

– Clean and protect the paintedparts using protective wax.

REPEATED CHECKSAND CHECKSBEFORE LONGTRIPS

Periodically, remember to check:

– tyre pressure and condition

– engine oil level

– coolant level and condition of thesystem

– brake fluid level

– windscreen washer liquid level

– power steering fluid level.

ACCESSORIESPURCHASEDBY THE OWNER

RADIO TRANSMITTERSAND CELL PHONES

Cell phones and other ra-dio transmitters (e.g. CB radios) can-not be used inside the car, unless youuse a separate aerial mounted outsidethe car.

– Clean and protect the shiny metalparts using special compounds avail-able on the market.

– Sprinkle talcum powder on therubber windscreen and rear windowwiper blades and lift them off theglass.

– Slightly open the windows.

– Cover the car with a cloth or per-forated plastic sheet. Do not usesheets of imperforated plastic as theydo not allow moisture on the car bodyto evaporate.

– Inflate the tyres to 0.5 bar abovethe normal specified pressure andcheck it at intervals.

– Do not drain the engine coolingsystem.

USEFULACCESSORIES

In addition to the legal requirementswe recommend keeping the followingin the car (fig. 4):

– first-aid kit with non-alcoholicbase disinfectant, sterile gauze, a rollof gauze bandage, plasters, etc.,

– fire extinguisher,

– all-purpose round-nose scissors,

– work gloves.

IMPORTANT The use of cellularphones, CB transmitters or other sim-ilar devices inside the passenger com-partment (without an aerial) producesRF electromagnetic fields which, am-plified by the resonance effects insidethe passenger compartment maycause electrical systems equipping thevehicle (engine control unit,ABS/EBD control unit etc.) to mal-function. This could compromise ve-hicle safety as well as constituting apotential hazard for the occupants.

The transmission and reception effi-ciency of this equipment may also beaffected by the shielding effect of thecar’s body.

EMERGENCYSTARTUP

If the ignition key fails to deactivatethe engine immobiliser, the warninglight¢will remain lit and the enginewill not start. In this case, you shouldcontact your LANCIA Dealershipand get them to carry out the emer-gency startup using the code given onthe CODE card. Alternatively, youcan perform the emergency startupprocedure yourself by following theprocedure given below.

Read the whole procedure care-fully before trying to carry it out. Ifyou make a mistake in the emergencyprocedure you must turn the ignitionkey back to STOP and repeat thewhole operation from the beginningstep 1.

1) Read the 5-figure electronic codegiven on the CODE card.

2) Turn the ignition key to MAR.

3) Press the accelerator pedal to thefloor and keep it there. The warninglamp will light up for about 8

seconds, and then go out. At this pointrelease the accelerator pedal and pre-pare to count the number of flashes ofthe warning lamp .

4) The warning lamp startsflashing: when it hasflashed the number of times that cor-responds to the first figure of the codeon the CODE card, press the acceler-ator pedal and keep it there until thewarning lamp lights up for four

seconds and thengoes out again. Release the accelera-tor pedal.

5) The warning lamp will startflashing again: whenthe lamp has flashed the number oftimes that corresponds to the secondfigure on the CODE card, press theaccelerator pedal to the floor and keepit there.

6) Do the same for the remainingfigures on the CODE card.

7) Once the final figure has been en-tered, keep the accelerator pedalpressed. The warning lamp willlight up for 4 seconds and

then go out. Release the acceleratorpedal.

Page 95: Uputstvo Lancia y

92

G

8) The warning lamp will flashrapidly for about 4 seconds to indicatethat the operation has been completedcorrectly.

9) Start the engine by turning the ig-nition key from MAR to AVV (with-out turning it to STOP).

If, however, the warning lamp remains lit, turn the ignition keyto STOP and repeat the procedurefrom step 1.

IMPORTANT After an emergencystart, you should contact a LANCIADealership immediately, otherwiseyou will have to repeat the proceduredescribed each time you want to startthe engine.

JUMP STARTINGIf the battery is flat, you can use an-

other battery to start the engine. Itscapacity must be the same or slightlygreater than the flat battery (see thesection “Technical Specifications”).

Do the following, (fig. 1):

1) Lift the protective cover on thepositive pole, then connect the posi-tive terminals (+) of the two batteriesA and B with a jump lead, which isusually red.

2) With a second lead (usuallyblack), connect the negative terminalC (–) of the auxiliary battery to anearth point D on the engine orgearbox of the car to be started.

IMPORTANT Do not connect theblack lead to the negative pole of theflat battery; any sparks could set thegas coming out of the battery on fire.If the other battery is fitted in a vehi-cle, prevent accidental contacts be-tween the metal parts of the two ve-

hicles.

3) Start the engine.

4) When the engine hasstarted, remove the leads inthe reverse order to before:

D, C, B and finally A.

If the engine fails to start after a fewattempts, do not keep turning the keybut have the car seen to at a LANCIADealership.

Under no circumstancesshould a battery chargerbe used to start the engine:

it could damage the electronic sys-tems and in particular the controlunits governing ignition and fuelfeed.

Do not carry out this pro-cedure if you lack experi-ence; if it is not done cor-

rectly it can cause very intenseelectrical discharges and the bat-tery might even explode. In addi-tion, the fluid contained in the bat-tery is poisonous and corrosive.Avoid contact with skin and eyes. You are also advised not to put

naked flames or lighted cigarettesnear the battery and not to causesparks: risk of fire and explosion.

To avoid damage to theelectrical system, scrupu-lously follow the cable

manufacturer’s instructions. Makesure the cables have an adequatecross section and are long enoughto avoid the two car touching.

into the catalytic exhaustpipe and damage it beyondrepair.

BUMPSTARTING

Bump starting by pushing, towingor rolling downhill must beavoided at all costs. This way ofstarting could cause a rush of fuel

Remember that as long asthe engine is not running, the brake booster and

power steering do not work. Youtherefore have to use considerablymore effort on both the brakepedal and the steering wheel.

IF A TYRE IS

PUNCTURED

GENERAL INDICATIONS

The following precautions must beobserved when changing a wheel andusing the jack and the space-saverspare wheel.

4C090-119 ING 11-03-2008 12:00 Pagina 94

Page 98: Uputstvo Lancia y

Signal that the car is sta-tionary as per the highwaycode: hazard lights, warn-

ing triangle, etc.Any passengers must get out of

the car, especially if it is heavilyladen, and keep out of the way oftraffic while the wheel is beingchanged.

If the ground is sloping orbumpy, place wedges or other suit-able material under the wheels tostop the car from moving.

The space-saver sparewheel is specific to the ve-hicle; do not use it on other

models and do not use sparewheels designed for other modelson your car.

If you change the type of wheelsfitted (alloy rims instead of steelones), you must also change the se-curing bolts for others of suitabledimensions.

The space-saver spare wheelmust only be used in the event ofan emergency, and then only for aslittle as possible and at no morethan 80 km/h. Driving will feel dif-ferent with the space-saver sparewheel fitted. Avoid sharp brakingand acceleration, sudden swervingand fast cornering.

The space-saver spare wheel hasa life-span of about 3000 km afterwhich the tyre should be replacedwith another of the same type.

4C090-119 ING 11-03-2008 12:00 Pagina 95

Page 99: Uputstvo Lancia y

96

G

Never fit a standard tyre to a rimto be used for the space-saverspare wheel. Have the puncturedtyre repaired and fitted back on assoon as possible.

No more than one space-saverspare wheel must be used at thesame time.

Do not grease the bolt threads be-fore fitting them, they could un-screw themselves.

The jack must only be used tochange wheels on the vehicle withwhich it is supplied or on vehiclesof the same model. All other uses, for example raising other vehicles, must be excluded. Under no cir-cumstances use the jack to carryout repairs under the vehicle.

If the jack is not used correctly, the raised vehicle may fall.

Do not use the jack to lift weightsabove that indicated on the labelattached to the jack itself.

Never start the engine while thecar is raised by the jack. If travel-ling with a trailer, detach thetrailer before raising the car.

Snow chains cannot be fitted tothe spare wheel, consequently if afront tyre is punctured (front drive)and snow chains need to be fitted,a standard wheel must be removedfrom the back axle and the space-saver spare wheel fitted in itsplace. In this way there will be twostandard wheels on the front andthe snow chains can be fitted.

Incorrect fitting of the wheel hubcould result in the hub coming offwhen the vehicle is travelling.

Never tamper with the inflationvalve.

Do not insert any type of tool be-tween the rim and the tyre.

Periodically check the tyre pres-sure including that of the spare-saver spare wheel as per the val-ues given in “Technical Specifica-tions”.

1. STOP THE CAR

– Stop the car so it is not a dangerfor on-coming traffic and in such aposition that the tyre can be changedin safety. The ground must be flat andadequately firm. During the night, chose a lit area, if possible.

– Turn engine off and engage thehandbrake.

– Engage first or reverse gear.

– Signal that the car is stopped ac-cording to traffic regulations: hazardlights, warning triangle, etc.

Any passengers must leave the carand watch out for traffic while thetyre is being changed.

If the ground is sloping or bumpy, place wedges or other suitable mate-rial for stopping the car under thewheels.

2. TAKE OUT THE TOOLS, JACK AND SPARE WHEEL(space-saver wheel)

They are in the boot.

– Lift the carpeting.

– Unscrew the fastener A (fig. 2)and take out the tool holder.

The tool holder contains:B - vehicle tow ring;C - jack handle;D - wheel bolt wrench;E - screwdriver;

F - extension for screwing wheelbolts and inflation valve cap;

– Take out the tools and remove thespace-saver spare wheel.

IMPORTANT The indicationswhich follow must be complied withto ensure that the jack and the sparewheel are used correctly.

It must be remembered that:

– the jack weighs 1.85 kg;

– the jack does not require adjust-ments;

– the jack cannot be repaired. If itbreaks, it must be changed with an-other new jack;

– only the jack handle described inthis chapter can be fitted onto thejack.

3. CHANGING THE WHEEL

1) Remove the wheel cup with ascrewdriver (LS versions).

2) Loosen the wheel bolts of thewheel to be changed by about 1 turn.

3) If the car is fitted with alloy rims, shake the car to facilitate removingthe rim from the wheel hub.

4) Turn the jack handle C so thatthe jack opens partially.

5) Place the jack at the point markedby a notch H (fig. 3) near the wheel tobe changed at approximately 10 cmtowards the centre of the car (fig. 3).

6) Turn the handle C to open thejack until the jack groove is correctlyinserted in the sidemember ribbing.

7) Warn any other people presentthat the car is going to be lifted. Otherpeople must stay clear and not touchthe car until it is back on the ground.

8) Turn jack handle and lift the ve-hicle until the tyre is a few centime-tres above the ground.

The jack handle must turn freely, without touching the ground to avoidscraping your hand.

Do not touch moving parts of thejack (screws and joints) as they cancause injuries. If you dirty your handswith grease, clean them carefully.

9) Undo the 4 bolts completely andremove the wheel cover (N version)and wheel.

10) Ensure that the support surfacesof the spare wheel are clean and freefrom impurities which could succes-sively cause the wheel bolts to loosen.Mount the spare wheel so that theholes I (fig. 4) coincide with the rela-tive pins L.

IMPORTANT Do not fit the wheelcover on the space-saver spare wheel.

11) Tighten the 4 securing bolts.

12) Turn the jack handle to lowerthe car, and remove the jack.

13) Tighten up the wheel bolts com-pletely in criss-cross fashion followingthe order shown in (fig. 5).

14) Put the punctured wheel in thespare wheel compartment.

The spare wheel is narrower thannormal wheels and must only be usedto travel to the nearest service stationso that the original tyre can be re-paired.

Depending on whether the type ofwheels normally fitted to the car arealloy or steel, the spare wheel (whichalways has a steel rim) will differ inconstruction so that it is compatiblewith the wheel bolts which are specificto each type of wheel.

If you wish to change the type ofwheel (alloy instead of steel and vice-versa) the wheel bolts and a newspare wheel must be employed.

Modifications or repairsto the electrical systemcarried out incorrectly and

without bearing the features of thesystem in mind can cause mal-functions with the risk of fire.

REFITTING THE STANDARDWHEEL

1) Following the above procedure, raise the car and take off the space-saver wheel.

4) Fit the wheel cover (1.216V MN blue version), mak-ing sure that slit C (fig. 6)

corresponds with the inflation valve.

5) Insert the other three bolts, usingextension F (fig. 2) (1.2 16V MN blueversion).

6) Tighten the bolts using the spe-cial wrench D (fig. 2).

8) Tighten up the bolts com-pletely in the order given previously in(fig. 5).

9) Fit the wheel cover (LS version)making sure that the inflation valveseat is positioned correctly; press thecover with the palm of your hands (donot bang) against the rim shoulderand ensure that all the retaining flapsare inserted into the rim.

When you have finished:

– Put the space-saver sparewheel into its special recess inthe boot.

– Refit the jack in its support mak-ing A (fig. 7) coincide with the ring Bon the jack and positioning the baseof the jack to match C.

– Refit the tools you used on the sup-port.

– Arrange the support and close thefastener A (fig. 8).

IMPORTANT Check the inflationpressure of the tyres and the sparewheel regularly.

IF A FUSE BLOWS

GENERAL

The fuse is an element for protectingthe electrical system. It will blow (thatit will break) in the event of a failureor incorrect interventions on the elec-trical system.

If an electrical device is not working, check whether the respective fuse isblown. The conductor should not bebroken. If it is, replace it with anotherwith the same amperage (samecolour) (fig. 29).

A - Intact fuse.

B - Fuse with broken filament.

Use the tongs C (fig. 29-32) to re-move the fuse to be replaced. One setof tongs is to be found in the mainfuse box, while the other is in the en-gine compartment fuse box.

If the problem re-occurs have the carseen to at a LANCIA Dealership.

Do not replace a fusewith another of a higheramp rating - DANGER OF

FIRE!

Never replace a brokenfuse with anything otherthan a new fuse. Always

use an undamaged fuse of thesame colour (same value).

RECHARGING THE BATTERY

You are recommended to rechargethe battery slowly for a period of ap-proximately 24 hours at a very lowamperage.

Extensive charging could damagethe battery.

Proceed as follows:

1) Disconnect the electrical systemterminals from the battery posts.

2) Connect the charger cables to thebattery terminals.

3) Turn on the charger.

4) When you have finished, turn thecharger off before disconnecting thebattery.

5) Reconnect the terminals to thebattery posts. Make sure the polarityis correct (connect the negative postlast).

IF THE BATTERY IS FLAT

First of all, read the “Car mainte-nance” section for the steps to betaken to avoid the battery runningdown and to ensure it has a long life.

JUMP STARTING

See “Jump starting” in this section.

The liquid in the batteryis poisonous and corrosive.Do not let it touch the skin

or eyes. Recharging the batteryshould be done in a well-venti-lated area and away from nakedflames or possible sources ofsparks: explosion and fire risk.

Never try to charge afrozen battery: first let itthaw out, otherwise it

could explode. If the battery has frozen, check

that the internal elements are notbroken (risk of short circuit) andthat the casing is not crackedcausing the acid to leak out. Thisacid is poisonous and corrosive.

Under no circumstancesshould a battery chargerbe used to start the engine:

it could damage the electronic sys-tems and in particular the controlunits governing ignition and fuelfeed.

Front end

The car may only be raised by plac-ing the jack arm under the transaxle, with a block of wood or rubber as il-lustrated in (fig. 38).

IF THE CAR NEEDS TO BE RAISED

WITH THE JACK

See “If a tyre is punctured”, in thissection.

The jack should only beused to change a wheel onthe vehicle with which it is

supplied or on vehicles of the samemodel. All other uses, for exampleraising other vehicles, must be ex-cluded. Under no circumstancesuse the jack to carry out repairsunder the vehicle.

If the jack is not usedcorrectly, the raised vehi-cle may fall. Do not use the

jack to lift weights above that in-dicated on the label attached to thejack itself.

It must be remembered that:

– the jack does not require adjust-ments;

– the jack cannot be repaired. If itbreaks, it must be changed with an-other new jack;

– only the jack handle described inthe chapter “If a tyre is punctured”can be fitted onto the jack.

While the car is beingtowed with the engine off, remember that the brake

pedal and steering will requiremore effort as you no longer havethe benefit of the brake boosterand power steering. Do not useflexible cables to tow. Avoid jerk-ing. Whilst towing, ensure that thecoupling to the car does not dam-age the surrounding components.

Do not extract the igni-tion key during towing;leave it at MAR, to prevent

the steering lock engaging and, provided the electrical system isnot damaged, keep the brake lightsand direction indicators working.

When the ignition key is re-moved, the steering lock will cut inthus preventing the steering wheelfrom being turned.

IF AN ACCIDENTOCCURS

– It is important to keep calm.

– If you are not directly involved, stop at least ten metres away from theaccident.

– If you are on a motorway do notobstruct the emergency lane with yourcar.

– Turn off the engine and turn onthe hazard lights.

– At night, illuminate the scene ofthe accident with your headlights.

– Act carefully, you must not riskbeing run over.

– Mark the accident by putting thered triangle at the regulatory distancefrom the car where it can be clearlyseen.

– If the doors are jammed, do not tryto leave the car by breaking the glassof the windscreen as the glass is strat-ified. Side windows and the rear win-dow can be broken more easily.

– Call the emergency services mak-ing the information you give as accu-rate as you can. On the motorway usethe special column-mounted emer-gency phones.

– Remove the ignition keys of the ve-hicles involved.

– If you can smell petrol or otherchemicals, do not smoke and makesure all cigarettes are extinguished.

– Use a fire extinguisher, blanket, sand or earth to put out fires no mat-ter how small they are. Never usewater.

– In pile-ups on the motorway, par-ticularly when the visibility is bad, there is a high risk of other vehiclesrunning into those already immobile.Get out of the car immediately andtake refuge behind the guard rail.

IF ANYONE IS INJURED

– Never leave the injured personalone. The obligation to provide as-sistance exists even for those not di-rectly involved in the accident.

– Do not congregate around the in-jured person.

– Reassure the injured person thathelp is on its way and will arrive soon.Stay close by to calm him/her downin case of panic.

– Unfasten or cut seat belts holdinginjured parties.

– Do not give an injured person any-thing to drink.

– Never move an injured person ex-cept in the following cases.

– Pull the injured person from thecar only if it risks catching fire, it issinking in water or is likely to fall overa cliff or similar. Do not pull his/herarms or legs, never bend the headand, as far as possible, keep the bodyhorizontal.

FIRST-AID KIT

The first-aid kit must at least con-tain (fig. 45):

– sterile gauze for covering andcleansing wounds

– bandages of different widths

– antiseptic plasters of different sizes

– a roll of plaster

– a packet of cotton wool

– a bottle of disinfectant

– a packet of paper handkerchiefs

– a pair of scissors with rounded tips

CAR MAINTENANCE

The Lancia Y is brand new throughout, even inits servicing schedule. Its design and manufactur-ing process have made the traditional check at1,500 kilometres unnecessary, which means itsfirst service schedule coupon is to be used at20,000 kilometres. Your car, however, still re-quires a certain amount of care and attention e.g.the various fluid/liquid levels and tyre pressuremust be systematically checked and topped up ifnecessary.

You should nonetheless bear in mind that propercar maintenance is certainly the best way to keepyour car in tip-top condition for years to come andsafeguard its safety features, its environmentally-friendly nature and its cheap running costs.

Also remember that the following servicing reg-ulations marked with the symbol ∑ are essentialto ensure the warranty remains valid.

SCHEDULEDSERVICING

Correct maintenance of the car is es-sential for ensuring it stays in tip-topcondition for a long time to come.

This is why LANCIA has pro-grammed a number of service checksand operations every 20,000 kilo-metres.

It is however important to remem-ber that Scheduled Servicing is not allyour car requires. Regular checks -also in the initial period before the20 thousand kilometre coupon andlater between coupons - ordinary careis required, such as checking fluid lev-els and topping up, checking tyre in-flation pressure, etc.

IMPORTANT The Manufacturer re-quires the Service Schedule coupon-related checks to be carried out. Fail-ure to do so could result in the war-ranty being cancelled.

Scheduled Servicing is performed atall LANCIA Dealerships and there isa set time scale for such operations.

If it is seen that further replacementsor repairs are necessary in addition tothe work being carried out, these willonly be done after the customer hasgiven his/her consent.

IMPORTANT You are recom-mended to get in touch with a LAN-CIA Dealership immediately if anysmall running problems crop up,without waiting for the next coupon.

IMPORTANT - Battery

You should check the battery chargepreferably at the beginning of thewinter to avoid the possibility of theelectrolyte freezing up.

This check should be performedmore frequently if the car is mainlyused for short trips, or if it is fittedwith accessories that absorb energyeven when the ignition key is re-moved, especially if they are after-market accessories.

You should check the battery fluid(electrolyte) level more frequentlythan shown in the Service Schedule(see “Car maintenance”) if the car isused in hot climates or particularlydemanding conditions.

IMPORTANT - Engine oil

Change the engine oil more fre-quently than indicated in the ServiceSchedule, if the car is normally drivenin one of the following particularly se-vere conditions:

– towing a trailer or caravan

– on dusty roads

– short, repetitive trips (less than 7or 8 kilometres) in outside tempera-tures below zero

– engines that are frequently left toidle or drive slowly over long dis-tances.

IMPORTANT - Air cleaner

Change the air cleaner more oftenthan indicated in the Service Sched-ule if you use the car on dusty roads.

If you are in doubt about how oftenthe engine oil or the air cleaner shouldbe changed in relation to how you usethe car, contact a LANCIA Dealer-ship.

IMPORTANT - Pollen filter

If the car is often used in dusty orhighly polluted areas, you shouldchange the pollen filtering elementmore frequently, especially if you no-tice that the amount of air enteringthe passenger compartment is re-duced.

IMPORTANT - Remote control

If the LED on the remote controlunit flashes only once when you pressthe remote control button, you needto replace the batteries.

Car maintenance shouldbe entrusted to a LANCIADealership. For interven-

tions of routine maintenance andsmall repairs you wish to carry outyourself, make sure you alwayshave the proper equipment, gen-uine LANCIA spare parts and thenecessary liquids; do not carry outservicing operations if you have noexperience.

Pay attention when top-ping up not to confuse thedifferent types of fluid:

they are all incompatible witheach other and could seriouslydamage the car.

If the car is frequentlyused with a trailer, main-tenance should be carried

out more frequently.

The jack supplied withthe car is only to be usedwhen changing a wheel.

For other operations that requirethe car to be lifted, special meth-ods are to be used. It is thereforerecommended to have them per-formed by a LANCIA Dealership.

Scarves, ties and loosegarments can get caught inmoving parts.

Never smoke while work-ing on the engine compart-ment: gas or inflammable

vapours could be present, causinga risk of fire.

ENGINE OIL (fig.s 1, 2)

Check the oil level a few minutes(approx. 5) after the engine hasstopped with the car parked on levelground.

The oil level must be between theMIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.

The space between MIN and MAXcorresponds to approximately onelitre of oil.

If the oil level is near or even belowthe MIN mark, pour in oil throughthe filler hole until it reaches the MAXmark.

The oil level must never exceed theMAX mark.

IMPORTANT If following a regularcheck the oil level is over the MAXline, go to a LANCIA Dealership tohave the correct level restored.

IMPORTANT After adding orchanging the oil, let the engine turnover for a few seconds and wait a fewminutes after turning it off before youcheck the level.

ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION

During the beginning of the car’s lifethe engine is be tuned in. Engine oilconsumption can only be consideredstabilised after the first 5,000 - 6,000km.

IMPORTANT Oil consumption de-pends on the driving style and theconditions of use.

When the engine is hot, operate very carefully in-side the engine compart-

ment: danger of burns. Rememberthat, when the engine is hot, theelectric fan could start operating:danger of injuries.

Do not add oil with dif-ferent specifications fromthe oil already in the en-

gine.

Used engine oil and re-placed oil filters containsubstances that can harm

the environment. We recommendyou have the car seen to at a LAN-CIA Dealership for the oil and fil-ter change. It is suitably equippedfor disposing of used oil and filtersin an environmentally-friendlyway that complies with the law.

ENGINE COOLANT SYSTEM (fig.s 1, 2)

IMPORTANT The cooling system ispressurised. If the plug must be re-placed, replace it only with a genuinespare part or system efficiency may beimpaired.

The coolant level must be checkedwhile the engine is cold and must bebetween the MIN and MAX marks onthe reservoir.

Do not take the cap of thereservoir off when the en-gine is very hot as you run

the risk of scalding yourself.

If there is not enough coolant, poura 50% mixture of distilled water andFL Group PARAFLU11 liquid slowlythrough the filler hole 5 in the reser-voir, until the level is near the MAXmark.

A 50-50 mixture of PARAFLU11

and distilled water gives freeze pro-tection to –35 °C.

WINDSCREEN/REAR WINDOWWASHER LIQUID (fig.s 1, 2)

To add liquid, remove cap 4 thenpour in the liquid until the reservoiris completely full.

Use a mixture of water and DP1 liq-uid in these percentages:

30% DP1 and 70% water in sum-mer.

50% DP1 and 50% water in winter.

If the temperature falls below –20°C,use DP1 undiluted.

IMPORTANT Do not travel withthe windscreen washer bottle empty:using the windscreen washer is fun-damental for improving visibility.

Some commercial addi-tives for windscreenwasher fluids are flamma-

ble. The engine compartment con-tains hot parts which could ignitethe fluid if it comes into contactwith them.

POWER-ASSISTED STEERINGFLUID (fig.s 1, 2)

Check the fluid level is not below theMIN mark visible on the reservoirwith the engine cold.

If necessary, add fluid making surethat it has the same specifications asthe fluid in the reservoir.

BRAKE FLUID (fig.s 1, 2)

Check that the fluid level in thereservoir is at maximum level.

Periodically check that the warninglight on the instrument panel is work-ing properly by pressing on the reser-voir cover with the key at MAR.Warning light x should come on.

If you need to add fluid, only use thetype classified DOT4. You are advisedin particular to use TUTELA TOP 4with which the braking system wasoriginally filled.

Symbol π on the con-tainer indicates synthetictype brake fluid distin-

guishing it from the mineral kind.Using mineral type fluids damagesthe special rubber braking systemgaskets beyond repair.

Make sure the power-as-sisted steering fluid doesnot come into contact with

hot parts of the engine as it catchesfire very easily.

Do not push on the powersteering limit switch formore than 15 seconds with

the engine running. This causesnoise and could damage the sys-tem.

Oil consumption is ex-tremely low. If further top-ping up is required soon

after the initial top-up, have thesystem checked over at a LANCIADealership for leaks.

Make sure the highly cor-rosive brake fluid does notdrip onto the paintwork. If

it does, wash it off immediatelywith water.

IMPORTANT Brake fluid is hygro-scopic (meaning it absorbs humidity). This is why the fluid should bechanged more frequently than shownin the Service Schedule if the car ismainly driven in areas with a highpercentage of humidity in the air.

The brake fluid is poiso-nous and corrosive. If itaccidentally comes into

contact with the skin, wash withneutral soap and water, then rinsecopiously. If swallowed, contact adoctor immediately.

If you often drive ondusty roads, the filter willrequire changing more fre-

quently than indicated in the Ser-vice Schedule.

Any cleaning operationson the filter could damageit, causing serious damage

to the engine.

USEFUL ADVICE FOR LENGTHENING THE LIFE OF YOUR BATTERY

When you park the car, ensure thedoors, boot and bonnet are closedproperly. The ceiling and map-read-ing lights must be off.

Do not leave accessories (e.g. radio, hazard lights, etc.) switched on for along time when the engine is not run-ning.

IMPORTANT If the battery is leftwith a charge of less than 50% for along time it will be damaged by sul-phation, engine startup will deterio-rate and it will be more subject tofreezing (this may occur at –10°C).

If the car is to be inactive for a longperiod of time, refer to the “Storingthe car” paragraph in the “Drivingyour car” section.

The liquid in the batteryis poisonous and corrosive.Do not let it touch the skin

or eyes. Do not bring naked flamesor possible sources of sparks nearto the battery: fire and explosionrisk.

Incorrect fitting of elec-trical and electronic ac-cessories can seriously

damage the car.

IMPORTANT When removing/in-stalling the battery, make sure thebattery is mechanically secured cor-rectly.

Running the car with thefluid level too low coulddamage the battery beyond

repair, even breaking the casingand allowing the acid contained init to leak out completely.

Always wear goggles toprotect the eyes whenworking on or near the

battery.

If the car is to remain un-used for a long period invery cold weather, remove

the battery and keep it in a warmplace, otherwise it could freeze.

CHECKING THE BATTERYFLUID LEVEL (electrolyte)

Check the electrolyte level and topup, if required, at the frequencyshown in the Service Schedule in thischapter. Have this operation carriedout at a LANCIA Dealership.

If, after purchasing the vehicle youwant to install electrical accessoriesthat require a permanent power sup-ply (alarm, free-hand phone, radionavigator with satellite anti theft sys-tem, etc.) go to a LANCIA Dealer-ship. The qualified staff are able tosuggest the most suitable Lineacces-sori devices and will assess the over-all electric absorption, checkingwhether the car can sustain the re-quired load or if an oversized batteryis required.

Remember that these accessoriescontinue to absorb electrical powereven when the ignition key is removed(car parked, engine off) and coulddischarge the battery.

The overall absorption of these ac-cessories (standard and after-sale in-stallations) must be less than 0.6 mAx Ah (of the battery) as shown in thetable below:

ELECTRONICCONTROL UNITS

When the car is being used nor-mally, special measures are not nec-essary.

The following instructions must befollowed very carefully, however, ifyou work on the electrical system orin cases where emergency starting isnecessary:

– Never disconnect the battery fromthe electrical system while the engineis running.

– Disconnect the battery from theelectrical system if you are rechargingit. Modern battery chargers can sup-ply up to 20 volts.

– Never perform emergency startswith a battery charger. Always use anauxiliary battery.

– Be particularly careful when con-necting the battery to the electrical sys-tem. Ensure the battery posts are con-nected up to the right leads (the polar-ity is correct) and check that the con-nection has been made properly. When

Remember also that high current in-take devices such as bottle heater, vacuum cleaner, cellular phone, re-frigerator etc., if powered while theengine is off will accelerate the bat-tery discharge.

IMPORTANT If you need to installadditional systems on the car, im-proper wiring connections, in partic-ular if they affect safety devices, aredangerous.

SPARK PLUGSThe cleanness and soundness of the

spark plugs are very important forkeeping the engine efficient and pol-luting emissions down.

The appearance of the spark plug(fig. 6), if examined by an expert eye,is a good way of pinpointing a mal-function even if it has nothing to dowith the ignition system. Therefore ifthe engine has problems, it is impor-tant to have the spark plugs checkedat a LANCIA Dealership.

The spark plugs must bechanged at the times spec-ified in the Service Sched-

ule. Only use the type of plugs in-dicated: if the heat ratio is lessthan required or the life specifiedis not guaranteed, problems canarise.

the battery is reconnected, the injec-tion/ignition system control unit mustreadapt its internal parameters; conse-quently performance may not be opti-mal during the first few kilometres af-ter reconnecting the battery.

– Do not connect or disconnect theterminals of the electronic units whilethe ignition key is at MAR.

– Do not check polarity throughsparking.

– Disconnect the electronic units ifyou are electrically welding the carbody. Remove the units if tempera-tures exceed 80°C (special operationson the bodywork etc.).

IMPORTANT If the radio or caralarm systems are not installed cor-rectly, they can interfere with theworking of the electronic control units.

Modifications or repairsto the electrical systemthat are performed incor-

rectly and do not take into accountthe system’s technical features canresult in malfunctions with therisk of fire.

WHEELSAND TYRES

TYRE PRESSURE

Every two weeks and before longjourneys, check the pressure of eachtyre including the spare.

The pressure must be checked whenthe tyre is rested and cold.

It is normal for the pressure to risewhen you are driving. If you have tocheck or restore the pressure when thetyres are warm, remember that thepressure value must be 0.3 bar abovethe specified value.

Incorrect pressure causes unevenwear of the tyres (fig. 7):

A - Correct pressure: tyre wearsevenly.

B - Underinflated tyre: shouldertread wear.

C - Overinflated tyre: centre treadwear.

Tyres must be replaced when thetread wears down to 1.6 mm. Complywith the laws in the country where thecar is being driven.

IMPORTANT

As far as possible avoid sharp brak-ing and screech starts.

Be careful not to hit the kerb, pot-holes or other obstacles hard. Drivingfor long stretches over bumpy roadscan damage the tyres.

Periodically check that the tyreshave no cuts in the side wall, abnor-mal swelling or irregular tyre wear. Ifany of these occur, have the car seento at a LANCIA Dealership.

Avoid travelling with an overloadedcar: this can seriously damage wheelsor tyres.

Remember that road-holding is also influencedby correct tyre pressure.

fig. 7P

4C00

If the pressure is too lowthe tyre overheats and thiscan cause it serious dam-

age.

If you get a flat tyre, stop immedi-ately and change it so as not to dam-age the tyre, the wheel, the suspensionand the steering.

Tyres age even if they are not usedvery much. Cracking of the tread rub-ber and the side walls are a sign ofthis ageing. In any case, if the tyreshave been fitted for more than sixyears they should be examined by anexpert who can judge whether theyare still fit for use. Remember tocheck the spare tyre particularly care-fully too.

If a replacement is necessary, alwaysuse new tyres and avoid using onesthe origin of which you are not certainabout.

Lancia Y uses tubeless tyres. Underno circumstances should an innertube be used with these tyres.

If you replace a tyre it is a good ideato change the inflation valve, too.

To ensure the front and rear tyres allwear evenly, you are advised tochange the tyres over every 10-15thousand kilometres keeping them onthe same side of the car so as not toreverse the direction of rotation.

RUBBER TUBINGFollow the Service Schedule care-

fully in the case of the braking andfuel supply systems rubber hoses.Ozone, high temperatures and longabsence of liquid in the system can infact cause the hardening and crack-ing of the pipes with possible loss offluid. A careful check is therefore es-sential.

Do not change the tyresover in criss-cross fashionby moving a tyre from the

left hand side of the car to the rightand vice versa.

WINDSCREEN/REARWINDOW WIPERS

BLADES

Periodically clean the rubber partwith suitable liquid, DP1 is recom-mended.

Change the blades if the rubber edgeis warped or worn out. You should inany case change them approximatelyonce a year.

Some simple steps can reduce po-tential damage to the blades:

– If the temperature falls to belowzero, make sure the rubber blade isnot frozen to the windscreen. If nec-essary, free it with a de-icing com-pound.

– Remove any snow that has settledon the glass: besides saving the bladesyou will avoid straining the electricwindscreen wiper motor and causingit to overheat.

– Do not operate the windscreen/rear window wipers on dry glass.

Changing the windscreen wiper blades (fig. 8)

1) Lift windscreen wiper arm A offthe glass and position the blade so asto form a right angle with the arm.

2) Press tab B of the coupling springand remove the blade to be replacedfrom arm A.

3) Fit the new blade by inserting thetab into the special hole in the arm.Make sure it is properly locked intoplace.

Replacing the rear window wiper blade (fig. 9)

1) Lift the cover A.

Travelling with wornwiper blades is dangerousbecause it reduces visibil-

ity in bad weather.

3) Fit a new arm and fasten the nut.Close the cover.

IMPORTANT Before removing thearm, mark the position of the wiper(e.g. with felt-tip pen or adhesivetape).

SPRAY NOZZLES

If there is no jet of liquid, first makesure that there is liquid in the reser-voir: see “Checking fluid levels” inthis section.

Then make sure that the holes in thenozzles (figs. 10 and 11) are notclogged up. Use a pin for this if nec-essary.

The windscreen and rear windowwasher jets can be adjusted.

The windscreen washer jet can beadjusted by inserting a pin in theaperture of each nozzle.

The rear window washer jet can beadjusted by moving the nozzle-holderwith a screwdriver.

CLIMATE CONTROLSYSTEM

During the winter, the climate con-trol system must be turned on at leastonce a month for about ten minutes.

Have the system checked at a LAN-CIA Dealership before the summer.

The system uses R134arefrigerating liquid. If itaccidentally leaks it will

not damage the environment.Never use R12 fluid as it is incom-patible with the system’s compo-nents and also contains CFC.

BODYWORK

PROTECTING THE CAR FROMATMOSPHERIC ELEMENTS

The main causes of rust are:

– atmospheric pollution;

– salt and humidity in the atmos-phere (coastal e or very hot and hu-mid areas);

– environmental conditions that arespecific to the season.

In addition, the abrasiveness of dustin the atmosphere and sand carriedby the wind as well as mud and stonesthrown up by other cars must not beunderestimated.

For your Lancia Y, Lancia has usedleading-edge technological solutionsto effectively protect the body fromrust.

These are the main ones:

– Painting systems and productsthat make the car particularly resis-tant to rust and scratching.

– The use of zinc-plated (or pre-treated) sheet steel which is highly re-sistant to rust.

– The spraying of the underbody, engine compartment, inside the whee-larches and other parts with wax-based products with a high protectivecapacity.

– Spraying plastic-coating materialsto protect the most exposed points:under the door, inside the wings, edges etc.

– The use of “open” box sections toprevent condensation and water frombuilding up and rusting the inside ofthe parts.

BODY AND UNDERBODYGUARANTEE

Your Lancia Y is covered by guar-antee against any original structuralor body part being holed by rust. Re-fer to the “LANCIA Warranty Book-let” for the general conditions of thisguarantee.

TIPS FOR KEEPING THE BODYIN GOOD CONDITION

Paintwork

The paintwork is not only to makeyour car look attractive but also toprotect the steel.

If your car is scuffed or scratcheddeeply you are therefore recommendedto touch up the paintwork as necessaryto prevent rust from forming.

Only use original products whentouching up the paintwork (see the“Technical specifications” section).

Ordinary maintenance of the paint-work involves in washing it. The fre-quency you should do this depends onthe conditions and the environmentthe car is driven in. For example ifyou drive in areas with a high level ofair pollution, or on roads sprinkledwith road salt, or if you park underresinous trees, it is a good idea towash the car more often.

141

G

IMPORTANT Cars with optional“Kaleidos” options (non-standardpersonalised paint colours), can be re-paired in exactly the same way asother cars painted with standardcolours at your LANCIA Dealership.

To wash the car properly:1) Remove the aerial from the roof

to prevent damaging it when washingthe car in an automatic carwash.

2) Wet the body using a low pressurejet of water.

3) Wipe a sponge with a slightlysoapy solution over the bodywork, frequently rinsing the sponge.

4) Rinse well with water and drywith a jet of air or a chamois leather.

When drying the car, be careful toget at those parts which are not soeasily seen e.g. the door frames, bon-net and around the headlights wherewater can most readily collect. Youare advised not to take the car into aclosed area immediately, but to leaveit out in the open so any water left canevaporate more easily.

Do not wash the car after it has beenparked in the sun or while the bonnetis hot: it could take the shine off thepaint.

External plastic parts must becleaned following the usual car wash-ing procedure.

As far as possible avoid parking yourcar under trees; the resinous sub-stances which often drop from certaintypes of trees could dull the paint andincrease the possibility of rusting.

IMPORTANT Bird droppings mustbe washed off immediately and withgreat care as their acid is particularlyaggressive.

Detergents pollute water. For this reason, the carmust be washed in an area

equipped for the collection andpurification of the liquids usedwhile washing.

IMPORTANT Washing is to be car-ried out with the engine cold and theignition key on STOP. After washingmake sure that the various protections(rubber sheaths and other guards)have not moved from their positionsor been damaged.

Windows

Use specific window cleaners toclean the windows. Use very cleancloths to avoid scratching the glass ordamaging its transparency.

IMPORTANT To prevent damageto the electric heater elements, wipethe inside of the heated rear windowgently in the same direction as the el-ements.

Engine compartment

At the end of each winter season, carefully clean the engine compart-ment. Be careful not to direct the jetof water on the electronic controlunits. Have this done at a garage.

INTERIORSFrom time to time check that water

has not collected under the mats(from dripping shoes, umbrellas etc.)which could cause the steel to rust.

CLEANING THE SEATS AND FABRIC UPHOLSTERY

PLASTIC PARTS INSIDE THE CAR

Use special products designed not toalter the appearance of the compo-nents.

IMPORTANT Do not use alcohol orpetrol for cleaning the glass of the in-strument panel.

CLEANING LEATHER SEATSAND PARTS

– Remove the dry dirt with a buck-skin or very slightly moist cloth with-out exerting too much pressure.

– Remove liquid or grease stainswith a dry absorbent cloth withoutrubbing. Then wipe with a buckskinor soft cloth moistened with water andneutral soap.

If the stain does not come out, use aspecial cleaning compound being par-ticularly careful to follow the instruc-tions for use.

IMPORTANT Never use alcohol oralcohol-base products.

Do not keep aerosol cansin the car. There is the riskthey might explode. Aerosol

cans must never be exposed to atemperature above 50°C; when theweather starts to get hot the tem-perature inside the car might gowell beyond that figure.

Never use flammableproducts (petroleum etheror petrol) to clean the in-

side of the car. Electrostaticcharges generated by rubbingwhile cleaning could cause fires.

FUELCONSUMPTION -CO2 EMISSIONS

The fuel consumption values, inlitres x 100 km, indicated in the fol-lowing tables, have been determinedaccording to homologation tests pre-scribed in the European Directivespecifications. The following proce-dures are used to define the con-sumption values:

Consumption values are defined bymeans of the following procedures:

– an urban cycle consisting of acold start and a simulated drive incity streets;

– an extra-urban cycle consistingin frequent accelerations, in all gears,simulating normal conditions of use.Speed ranges from 0 to 120 km/h;

– the combined consumption iscalculated as approximately 37% ofthe urban cycle and approximately63% of the extra-urban cycle.

IMPORTANT Road and trafficconditions, weather, general con-ditions of the car, driving style, fit-tings and accessories, use of theclimate control system, load, roofracks and other situations penal-ising aerodynamic penetration andeffecting rolling resistance will in-fluence fuel consumption rateswhich can be different from thevalues shown in the table (see“Cheap running that respects theenvironment” in “Driving yourcar” chapter).

Consumption may be greater duringthe first 2000 km due to running in.
