All About Chocolates
Chocolate originated from Central America. The cocoa tree originally comes from the Amazon rainforest. The word chocolate is from the Aztec language. The Aztecs made an oily and bitter drink called Xocoatl from cocoa beans mixed with cold water, spices and cornmeal.
A Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortes, was the first person to bring chocolate to Europe. Coenrad Van Houten, a Dutchman, was the first person to extract the cocoa butter from the cocoa bean in 1827. In 1847, Joseph Fry, who lived in England, mixed the cocoa butter with other ingredients to make a solid chocolate bar.
Daniel Peter, a confectioner in Switzerland, invented milk chocolate in the 1870s. Henri Nestle developed the process. At the same time, Sir Hans Sloane, a personal physician of Queen Anne of England, invented a recipe for milk chocolate. He later sold it to the Cadbury brothers who made millions with their chocolate confections.
Ever wondered why people love chocolate so much? Well, according to scientists, chocolate contains a small amount of chemical called phenylethylamine, which is also naturally present in the brain. The chemical gives us the feeling of happiness which is why eating chocolates makes us happy!
