WHATconstitutesagoodandabad holiday season along theUmdoni coast isdependentup-onwhose choice it is. Formostof the coast’s resident popula-tion, visitors are good news ifthey stay for at least a weekwhile day trippers are lesswel-come.Predictably,thisislinkedto the amount of money theyspend but also to the over-crowding of resources on thebig days such as 16 and 26 De-cember and 1 January.
At this stage, the feeling ap-pears to be that this year’s fes-tiveseasonhasbeenalotbetterthan feared.
The water supply debacleand other problems of a yearago led many to speculate thattherewouldbeabacklashfrommedium to longer-term visi-tors.
Up country visitors came intheir droves and those whospoke to the Feverwere happyat their experiences. Some ofthe complaints though wereabout the overcrowding by theday trippers.
Scottburgh personality Pe-ter Fielding felt that the NewYear’s Day crowd on Scott-burgh beach was down on theprevious year.
On thebusiness front, bottlestores did a roaring trade andthe property letting sector wasmore than surprised. Scott-burgh SAPS spokesman Cap-tain Vincent Pandarum saidthat crime levels were withinexpectations and while localtraffic authorities caught theirusual quota of 200km/h-plustransgressors, accident levelswereaverageforthistimeoftheyear.

FEVER DIARY
Dear Fever,NOW that the season of giving and re
ceiving is over it seems to be a good timeto think over what that means. I am agrandparent and each year I see my andothergrandchildrenreceivingpresentsandfood and drink at such a rate that theybarely have time to rip the wrapping off ortaste the delicacy before grabbing at or attempting to swallow the next one. Laterin the day, the toys are lying discarded ina pile of paper, the cookies are lying halfeaten and the little darlings are snoringaway.
They haven’t a clue who gave them
what or even what they received and as forgiving thanks, they probably can’t remember whether you were even there.
Meanwhile, in another place, if youwere there to see, other children are sittingwith their fingers in their mouths and theywill be lucky if they get anything more thanthat. Many years ago, we took our two eldest grandchildren to a home for childrenwith HIV/Aids on Christmas Day. Therethey shared what little there was. Eversince then to this day when they are in theirthirties, they tell us: “That was our best ever Christmas.” Makes you think.
Granny, Pennington

Haar debuut CD Be the Light is in haar pa se stu
Ek bidook elke keer voordat ek optree,” vertel sy.
Haar ma sê diestudio werk is mak

Engosini yanamhlanje sifisa ukuzwa imibono yenungobumnandi nobuhlungu bokuba nomoya omuhlenokuziphatha kahle,(manners).
NjengobasiphumaekhefinilikaKhisimusinoNcibijane,kukhona abasancoma ukuphathwakahle laphobebevakashele khona.
Kodwake, laba abebevakashile bancoma ukuphatheka kahle nje, kukhona abebevakashelwe abademelayisa bodwa kumanje ngoba bangene ezindlekweni ezimangalisayo kade bengazihlelele.
Omunye wabademelayisayo, umngani wami uNyikinyibhoxo Cele olunge lento edabukisayo. Wonkeumuntu okhuluma ngaye uthi: “Akukhona ukulungakomuntu lokhu. Ulunge njengabefundisi bakudala.Umuntu ongakwazi ukuthi nxa!”
Umfo kaCele owaziwa ngamancoko uthi kusukelakulo nyaka, usezokhiya kwakhe ngamaholide kaKhisimusi azihambele nomndeni wakhe ukuze angaxabani namuntu.
Unkabi ukhuluma ngomndeni wakhe nje, ushoyena nomkakhe kuphela ngoba izingane sezikhulilesezinemizi yazo.
Ungibuza ukuthi kusuke kwenze njani uma umuntu ekuvakashela engakwazisanga.
“Okubuhlungu kakhulu ukuthi yizihlobo ezihluphangalo mkhuba. Umuntu amane atheleke nje ngobaazi ukuthi ngeke umxoshe,” ezikhalela umfo kaNdosi.
Uthi ngempelasonto eyandulela uKhisimusi kufike umlamu wakhe osebenza eGoli. Nanxa engaziukuthi wenza msebenzi muni, uthi indlela aswenkangayo nathanda izinto eziphezulu ngayo, itshengisa
ukuthi usebenza kahle.Uqhuba uthi: “Ngizibulale ngokumyalela indlela
eza kwami njengoba angigcina ngisahlala elokishini, ngingazi ukuthi ngizidonsela amanzi ngomsele.”
Kuqale kwaba mnandi bebonana emvakwesikhathi eside, bexhawulana, umlamu encomaubuhle nokuhlanzeka komuzi, encokoncokola nanodadewabo.
UNyikinyibhoxo akazithinti ezikaFaro, kodwa kuhlale kukhona efrijini okulinde abavakashile. Futhiuyaqinisekisa ukuthi zikhona zonke izinhloboezikhonzwe yilabo abathintayo. Inyama nama ‘boerewors’ bekugcwele kusweleke indawo efrijini, okaNdosi ehlelele ukuthi kuyoze kugamanxe uMasingana(January).

“Dukuduku, ngiyabona sekuma itekisi, kwehla intombi yakhe nezingane zabo ezimbili. Ngiqalengacabanga ukuthi uzothi qu, ahambe, kanti angibuzanga elangeni. Uzohlala wonke amaholide. Enjalonje uyazifela wutshwala, futhi uthanda lobu obubizayo.

Burry Stander’s legacy lives on

Following the ride, pastorTrevor Downham conducted a short servicewhereafter cyclists lit candles andplaced flow-ers at their hero’s ghost bike.
Earlier on Friday, Burry’s wife Cherise tookher husband’s I-pod and cycled the exact routeof his last ride and stopped at the place wherehe had phoned her from for the final time.“Somethingwithinmesaidtomeit’ssomethingIwanted todo.Theweatherwasscarily similarwith thewind just in the opposite direction.Mybest friend Lise Olivier and Justin Porteousjoined me because I’m not sure I would’vecoped on my own. It helped me … it broughtbacka lotofmemoriesand it’s abeautiful ride,”she told the Fever.
Cherise, anelitecyclistherself, thankedfansforthesupportshe’sreceived.“Thesupporthasbeenincredible.Memorialrideshavebeenheldacross the world, in places I’ve never even

The park itself hassuch a positive energy and I believe Burry’shard at work here.
“I received wonderful support from the na-tional andprovincial sportsdepartments inor-ganising these two events and couldn’t havedone it without them.”
The park, with the support of government, willserveastheofficialhubforthedevelopmentof cycling in the Ugu district and will promotecycling safety. SRSA donated 35 bicycles andsafetyequipmenttotheBurryStanderFounda-tion on the day as part of the Cycle for Life pro-gramme.
