The people of the Exodus followed Moses because he was able to produce marvellous signs that God was on his side. Jesus then goes up the hillside and sits down. Here, Jesus is acting like Moses who went up Mount Sinai. In sitting down, Jesus takes up the posture of a teacher, again an allusion to Moses. While looking back to the Exodus, the Gospel also points to the Christian Eucharist in Jesus' taking the bread and giving thanks, which in Greek is eucharistein. When the crowd experience the miracle, called in John ‘a sign’ they think Jesus is the long awaited prophet God had promised. ‘Then the LORD replied to me: “They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command.”’ (Deut 18:17-18) To be continued… Adapted © Liturgyhelp: Mary Coloe PBVM Jesus, the new Moses [I recommend reading Exodus 16 as essential background to the readings over the next weeks.]

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORD. TIME/B READINGS: 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6

GOSPEL: John 6:1-15

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’

Over the next five Sundays, the Gospels will all come from the sixth chapter of John's Gospel, where one of the critical issues in this Gospel is highlighted. Who do you look to as the one who can reveal God's ways, Jesus or Moses? This of course was a major issue facing the first group of Christians in the early Church who all came to be followers of Jesus from Judaism. John's Gospel sets out to reassure his Jewish-Christian community that they have not lost touch with the rich traditions of Judaism in becoming a follower of Jesus; on the contrary, the Gospel teaches that the great traditions of Judaism are brought to their fulfilment and perfection in Christ. It might be helpful to see the entire structure of John 6 and how it will appear over the following Sundays.

6:1-15 The miracle of bread in the wilderness (17th Sunday) The miracle leads to the crowd's decision that Jesus is the one who is to come. Jesus is aware that they wish to make him king, and he flees from that place.

6:16-21: Jesus, who has ascended the mountain in v. 15, is no longer present. The disciples leave the crowd and set off across the sea. In the midst of a storm, Jesus comes to them, reveals himself to them as ‘I AM’, and they come safely to shore.

6:22-24: A second introduction (where?, when?, who?, why?).

6:25-59: The discourse on the bread from heaven. (18th, 19th, 20th Sundays)

It takes the form of a discussion between Jesus and the crowds and ‘the Jews’. The Jews raise a series of misunderstanding questions or statements that enable the thematic development of the discourse.

vv. 6:60-71: Jesus’ words create a crisis leading to two responses: (21st Sunday) vv. 60-65: ‘Many of the disciples’ find the word of Jesus too hard, and leave him.

vv. 66-71: Peter confesses that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life.

The chapter begins with a miracle of bread. When reading the Gospel, we need to try to read with the eyes of someone who knows and loves the Old Testament, especially the story of the great escape from Egypt under the leadership of Moses at the first Passover time. Reading the miracle, we need to be alert to the clues to John's deeper meaning.

Firstly, Jesus attracts a crowd because they have seen signs.

HALL

Recently the hall at St Catherine’s was renamed ‘The Fr Rosenskjar Hall’ after the Parish Priest of St Agnes, Mt Gravatt. This recognition is a tribute to the determination of Fr Rosenskjar to develop the area covering Mt Gravatt, Upper Mt Gravatt & Wishart.

YAYA - PARISH YOUTH

Celebrating the UN’s International Day of Youth in the Catholic Church’s Year of Youth, YAYA is hosting a family BBQ at Broadwater Park (Mansfield Place) in Mansfield, Sunday August 12 from 12 pm. We’ll provide a BBQ (sausages and onions) and drinks but would appreciate if families could bring their own plates, cups (so we can limit the use of disposables) and a dessert to share. After lunch and games, YAYA will be heading to St Bernard’s for the Youth Mass in the evening and we’d love to see a great youth turnout for Mass as well.

LET US CELEBRATE OUR

PARISH DIVERSITY

The Parish invites you to a celebration of our rich diversity on the 19th August from 11 am,

St Catherine’s, Fr Rosenskjar Hall.

There will be food and cultural performances in a day of fun and fellowship.

As we need to have a count of attendees, we request you to note your RSVP on the sign-up sheets available at the tables that are set up at Mass. Alternatively, you can email with the

number of attendees to [email protected].

Be a part of our community in sharing our rich heritage.
