the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS
Greetings All, Hopefully everyone had a Merry Christmas and will soon have a happy new year. I had all of my Christmas decorations ready, and then I woke up last week to find someone had stolen all of my snow. Oh well, I guess they will bring it back. The deadline for nominations for the upcoming elections is Jan 1st, so there is still time to throw your name in the hat. We have a nominee for all positions at the moment but the more the merrier. I had the opportunity to try one of the air powered rotary tools recently. Most of the small electric rotary tools run at between 25 -50,000 rpm. They work well for detail work. Or so I thought. The air powered version runs at 400,000 rpm. They use a smaller bit, but cut like a hot knife thru soft butter. The slower tools tend to grab, burn instead of cut and are sometimes difficult to control. The air powered ones are small, easy to control and allow you to do incredible detail. (and they blow the work clear) Guess what I got for Christmas? Bob Grimm MWCA President

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers

Christmas Party meeting enjoyable, attendance of eleven, to enjoy a variety of potluck goodies and the mystery gift exchange. Art Chamberlin had cut out interesting blocks of basswood with “handles”- a trick he picked up. Defi-nitely made for easier handling of our “Santa” themed carve-around which produced a lot of laughs and of course intrigue- one Santa looked like he just chopped down a forest, another maybe an axe murderer, one never knows what character lurks in the wood! In the true spirit of giving, and the generosity of sharing, Mrs. Dave Warren donated innumerable expensive books and patterns which covered a huge table for our pick and paw pleasure. Her late husband Dave enjoyed carving very much and when they were in Ft. Myers in the winter, he had started a carving group. “Keep going with the grain” as Art says!
Did you ever wonder what goes on at Streaked Mountain woodcarver's Club meeting? Today's activity was a "santa carve around." There were 10 carvers participating. Each one started with a similar blank. Every 10 minutes you pass your partially carved Santa to the person on your left. Carve for 10 minutes, and pass to the left again and so on. The Santa's progress around the table until the one you started with comes back to you.

Southern Maine Woodcarvers Guild Southern Maine Woodcarvers' Guild met on December meeting on Tuesday, December 18th at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, 200 Gorham, Rd. South Portland, ME 04106. Because Rockler had several large shipments of woodshop tools, Plywood, and lumber the part of the store where we usually meet was clogged with new merchandise. So the store manager suggested that we set up in the front of the store right in front of the entrance. Cool high visibility location. We had 9 carvers show up for the meeting, pretty good for a week before Christmas. Warren Houlette was working on a Jam Spreader, Vicki Fox was working on her carved jewelry box, George Morgan had a Santa ornament that he was completing. James McCain carved a feather that he was going to make into a quill pen, Jim Norton was finishing up on a Humpback Whale, and I finished a simple Santa to add to my collection. We also had several new carvers show up, Lauryn Hottinger carved a simple Santa, Russ Wiggins also worked on a simple Santa. Sam Waggoner, a 16 y.o. Carver who has been working with Kathy Webster was also working on a Santa ornament. Southern Maine Woodcarvers' Guild, continues to draw new carvers to our association. COASTAL CARVERS We had 17 attend our Christmas Party on Dec. 8th. This year we had no snow to push us into January. The food and fellowship was great. As you can see by looking at the photos, the carvings were so good there was no fighting over the swap gifts....all were happy with what they received. The candy guessing game was won by Kathy. We did remember some of our members that couldn't attend by getting some cards out to them. Also, Jim and I were presented with a lovely card and money gift over and above what they should have done. Many thanks to all. At the end of the day plans were made for our next meetings: Jan. we will bring our unfinished items to finish; Feb. Kathy will lead us in carving the woodpecker she used for a swap gift; March Carol will have us do some wood burning and in April Karen will share her penguin skills with us. We look forward to a wonderful New Year for all and welcome newcomers always.
