ATATURK’S LIFEHe was born in 1881 (prob-ably in the spring) in Salonica then an Ottoman city now in Greece. His father Ali Riza a customs official turned lumber merchant died when Mustafa was still a boy. His mother Zubeyde a devout and strong-willed woman raised him and his sister. First enrolled in a traditional religious school he soon switched to a modern school. In 1893 he entered a military high school where his mathematics teacher gave him the second name Kemal (meaning perfection) in rec-ognition of young Mustafa’s superior achievement. He was thereafter known as Mustafa Kemal.

In 1905 Mustafa Kemal gradu-ated from the War Academy in Istanbul with the rank of Staff Captain. Posted in Damascus he started with several colleagues a clandestine society called “Homeland and Freedom” to fight against the Sultan’s des-potism. In 1908 he helped the group of officers who toppled the Sultan. Mustafa Kemal’s career flourished as he won his heroism in the far corners of the Ottoman Empire includ-ing Albania and Tripoli. He also briefly served as a staff officer in Salonica and Istanbul and as a military attache in Sofia.

In 1915 when Dardanelles cam-paign was launched Colonel Mustafa Kemal became a na-tional hero by winning succes-sive victories and finally repel-ling the invaders. Promoted to general in 1916 at age 35 he liberated two major provinces in eastern Turkey that year. In the next two years he served as commander of several Otto-man armies in Palestine Aleppo and elsewhere achieving an-other major victory by stopping the enemy advance at Aleppo.

On May 19 1919 Mustafa Ke-mal Pasha landed in the Black Sea port of Samsun to start the War of Independence. In defiance of the Sultan’s government he rallied a lib-eration army in Anatolia and convened the Congress of Erzurum and Sivas which es-tablished the basis for the new national effort under his lead-ership. On April 23 1920 the Grand National Assembly was inaugurated. Mustafa Kemal Pasha was elected to its Presi-dency.

Fighting on many fronts he led his forces to victory against rebels and invading armies. Fol-lowing the Turkish triumph at the two major battles at Inonu in Western Turkey the Grand National Assembly conferred on Mustafa Kemal Pasha the title of Commander-in-Chief with the rank of Marshal. At the end of August 1922 the Turkish armies won their ultimate victory. Within a few weeks the Turkish mainland was completely liberated the armistice signed and the rule of the Ottoman dynasty abolished.

In July 1923 the national government signed the Lausanne Treaty with Great Britain France Greece Italy and others. In mid-October Ankara became the capital of the new Turkish State. On October 29 the Republic was proclaimed and Mustafa Kemal Pasha was unanimously elected President of the Republic.

Atatürk married Latife Usakligil in early 1923. The marriage ended in divorce in 1925.

The account of Atatürk’s fifteen year Presidency is a saga of dramatic mod-ernization. With indefatigable deter-mination he created a new political and legal system abolished the Caliph-ate and made both government and education secular gave equal rights to women changed the alphabet and the attire and advanced the arts and the sciences agriculture and industry.

In 1934 when the surname law was adopted the national parliament gave him the name “Atatürk” (Father of the Turks).

On November 10 1938 following an ill-ness of a few months the national lib-erator and the Father of modern Tur-key died. But his legacy to his people and to the world endures.

William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman of Micro-soft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full po-tential.

On June 27, 2008, Gates transitioned out of a day-to-day role in the company to spend more time on his global health and educa-tion work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foun-dation. He shares his thoughts about the foundation and other topics on Gates Notes, a Web site launched in January 2010. Gates continues to serve as Microsoft’s chairman and as an advisor on key development proj-ects. In June 2006, Craig Mundie assumed the new title of chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft and is responsible for the company’s research and incubation efforts.

Born on Oct. 28, 1955, Gates grew up in Se-attle with his two sisters. Their father, William H. Gates II, is a Seattle attorney. Their late mother, Mary Gates, was a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent, and chair-woman of United Way International.

Gates attended public elementary school and the private Lakeside School. There, he discovered his interest in software and be-gan programming computers at age 13.

In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft’s chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.

In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal com-puters. Gates’ foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Mi-crosoft and the software industry.

Under Gates’ leadership, Microsoft’s mission has been to continually advance and improve software technology, and to make it easier, more cost-effec-tive and more enjoyable for people to use comput-ers. The company is committed to a long-term view, reflected in its industry-leading investment in re-search and development each year.

In 1999, Gates wrote “Business @ the Speed of Thought”, a book that shows how computer technology can solve business problems in fundamentally new ways. The book was published in 25 languages and is available in more than 60 countries. “Business @ the Speed of Thought” has received wide critical acclaim, and was listed on the best-seller lists of the “New York Times”, “USA Today”, “The Wall Street Journal” and on Amazon.com. Gates’ previous book, “The Road Ahead”, published in 1995, was at the top of the “New York Times” bestseller list for seven weeks.

Gates has donated the proceeds of both books to non-profit organizations that support the use of technology in education and skills development.

In addition to his love of computers and software, Gates founded Corbis, which is developing one of the world’s largest resources of visual information - a comprehensive digital archive of art and photography from public and private collections around the globe. He is also a mem-ber of the board of directors of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which invests in companies engaged in diverse business activities.

Philanthropy is very important to Gates. He and his wife, Melinda, started a foundation in 2000 to help reduce inequities in the United States and around the world. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports philanthropic initiatives in the areas of global health and learning, with the hope that in the 21st century, advances in these critical areas will be available for all people.

Gates was married on Jan. 1, 1994, to Melinda French Gates. They have three children. Gates is an avid reader, and enjoys playing golf, tennis and bridge.

FUTURE CITIESFuture cities will have to handle in-creasing population, globalization and environmental concerns. Just like fu-ture homes will have smart home technology mainstreamed and the smart grid will be online and work-ing, future cities will take advantage of both of these emerging technologies. Many large metropolis type future cit-ies will still need power from the smart grid to supplement combined heat and power (CHP) stations locally. What will be unique however is that in the next 10 – 15 years there will be dis-ruptive technology in the solar sector that will enable most buildings within large cities to be their own power gen-eration stations.

Right now, thin film solar is starting to come of age. Windows can be used as solar panels and awnings or aluminum siding can be coated with thin film solar technology that captures and generates electricity. Cities of the future will use the next generations of this solar technology on a widespread scale and will be integrated within the architecture of new buildings and retrofitted into older buildings.Future cities will also rely on wind farms on the outskirts of the city for power. In order to even out fluctuations caused by wind, water will be electrolyzed, stored as hydrogen then run through a fuel cell to create electricity as need-ed, on-demand. This will all be integrated into future smart grid technology along with other types of energy sources.

Future cities will also go further above ground and below ground than is possi-ble right now and even out to sea. Food crops, energy, and an entire self-sustain-ing habit will be constructed architec-turally for some cities in the future. This will be helpful for especially hot or cold climates.

Future cities will also go further above ground and below ground than is possible right now and even out to sea. Food crops, energy, and an entire self-sustaining habit will be constructed architecturally for some cities in the future. This will be helpful for especially hot or cold climates. For cities of the future, algae will become an important food and fuel crop. Algae like tofu (soybeans) will be eaten in a variety of sizes, shapes and flavors. In addition, algae will be grown for biofuels and as a green method of producing hydrogen gas (along with solar-to-hydrogen, wind-to-hydrogen, geothermal-to-hydrogen and hydroelectric-to-hydrogen power). A little further into the future cold fusion will come online and will be a game-changer forever.

These sources of future energy will en-sure that cities are green, environmen-tally friendly and sustainable. Future cities will also have the latest trans-portation technology including hydro-gen fuel cell cars, electric cars, a few left-over biofuel cars, hydrogen buses, trains (hydrail), elevated trains (hyrail), subways, and even at some point lim-ited flying cars for police and emergen-cy personnel (and of course VIP’s even though the future will be more demo-cratic and less hierarchical in structure than it is now).

Of course there will be large future air-planes that will reside at future airports and spaceports just outside the city. But, there will be smaller future airplanes and helicopters located inside mini-airports inside the city. These will be used for shut-tles to the larger airports and also for short trips to other local cities. Future jetpacks will also aid in travel around cities large and small.Future shopping malls will be downsized and decentralized. More shopping will be done online than any other times so the shopping mall of old will start to fade away as consumers will be able to use fu-ture augmented reality and virtual reality to “try before you buy” from within their own homes.Future cities that are above ground will have vast underground networks that may be subterranean cities themselves with their own identities and cultures. Subways, cargo trains, stores, computer data centers and many other businesses will be located underground, using the Earth’s natural heating and cooling systems to conserve energy.

In addition, business and critical govern-ment facilities will be safe underground from natural phenomenon such as tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning and earthquakes and to some degree and even ironically flood-ing which future city engineers will have ad-dressed.Controlling the weather in any meaning-ful matter won’t happen for centuries so the best future city planners and engineers will be able to do is to build structures that resist the most violent storms that have been on record. And just like today, in the future they will not be totally successful in this endeavor.Future cities will incorporate the most con-temporary smart homes and smart housing possible. No more ghettos, slums, gangs or the hood. Within the next 50 years there will be a major revolt against the rich. The mid-dle class will grow significantly as the poor people become wealthier and the billionaires become non-existent.

Local schools, court houses, sports facilities, government offices will all be local and convenient to get to if needed. As previously stated much will be accomplished with virtual reality and augmented reality inside of one’s own home that this will cut down on travel time, traffic and over-crowding in the city streets significantly.Future cities will offer residents more power, control, security, flexibility and health than at any other time in history. Doomsdayers and naysay-ers will try to rain on this parade as they always have, but if one just looks back into history 2,000 years to see where Man has come and how cities have developed, one only needs a little imagination to see how future cities and the technology behind them will play out ahead of us.

Directions:1 Combine filling ingredients (food processor works great) and chill.

2 Cut the wraps diagonally, ie. two triangles per wrap. Take approximately half a teaspoon of filling in the shape of a ball and put in the center of each triangle. Have a cup of water nearby, and use your little finger to dampen the sides of each triangle (so the dough will stick) and close them up.

3 Place the manti on floured baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the wrappers and filling.

4 Put all the uncooked manti into the big size Ziploc or in a container with the lid. Keep them in the freezer at least for a day.

5 When ready to cook, remove from bag and place on a plate an hour before cooking. Fill a large pot with water, add pinch of salt and 1 tbsp olive oil and bring to boil over medium high heat. Add the manti and stir gently to keep them from sticking to each other. Do not crowd the pot.

6 Cook for exactly 9 minutes and then drain. Put on plates.

7 While the manti boil, fry the butter in a small pan mixed with the red pepper until browned. When ready to serve, put some garlic yogurt on top of the manti, then drizzle the fried butter over the top.

2 MUST BE TRAVELLED PLACES IN ISTANBUL

GALATA TOWERDescriptionThe nine-story tower is 66.90 meters tall (62.59 m without the ornament on top, 51.65 m at the observation deck), and was the city’s tallest structure when it was built. The elevation at ground level is 35 meters above sea-level. The tower has an ex-ternal diameter of 16.45 meters at the base, an 8.95 meters di-ameter inside, and walls that are 3.75 meters thick. There is a restaurant and café on its upper floors which command a magnificent view of Istanbul and the Bosphorus. Also located on the upper floors is a night club which hosts a Turkish show. There are two operating eleva-tors that carry visitors from the lower level to the upper levels

History

The tower was built as Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) in 1348 during an expansion of the Geno-ese colony in Constantinople. The Galata Tower was the tallest building in Istanbul at 219½ feet (66.9 m) when it was built in 1348.[1] It was the apex of the fortifications surrounding the Geno-ese citadel of Galata. The current tower should not be confused with the old Tower of Galata, an original Byzantine tower named Megalos Pyrgos (English: Great Tower) which controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance to the Golden Horn. That tower was on a different site and was largely destroyed in 1203, during the Fourth Crusade of 1202–1204.

The upper section of the tower with the conical cap was slightly modified in several restorations during the Ottoman period when it was used as an observa-tion tower for spotting fires.According to the Seyahatname of Ottoman historian and travel-ler Evliya Çelebi, in circa 1630-1632, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi flew as an early intercontinental aviator using artificial wings for gliding from this tower over the Bosphorus to the slopes of Üsküdar on the Anatolian side, nearly six kilometres away.[3] Ev-liyâ Çelebi also tells of Hezarfen’s brother, Lagari Hasan Çelebi, performing the first flight with arocket in a conical cage filled with gunpowder in 1633.Starting from 1717 the Otto-mans began to use the tower for spotting fires in the city. In 1794, during the reign of Sultan Selim III, the roof of the tower made of lead and wood, and the stairs were severely damaged by a fire.

Another fire damaged the building in 1831, upon which a new restoration work took place. In 1875, during a storm, the conic roof on the top of the building was destroyed. The tower remained without this conic roof for the rest of the Ottoman period. Many years later, in 1965-1967, during the Turkish Republic, the original conical cap was restored. During this final resto-ration in the 1960s, the wooden interior of the tower was replaced by a concrete structure and it was commercialized and opened to the public. From the top of the tower, the first French panorama painter Pierre Prévost drew in 1818 his “Panorama de Constantinople” which was later exposed in Paris in 1825.[4]The panorama image shown below is composed of ten photos[5] taken from the Galata Tow-er by the photographic firm of Sébah & Joaillier, and is most likely to have been taken in the 1880s.

THE MAIDEN TOWER

THE MAIDEN TOWER

Kizkulesi is a tower standing on a stone mound at the point where Asia and Europe intersect and at just an arrows flight from Asia, and it is unique for the position it occupies between two continents. This 2,500-year-old tower has born witness to the histories of ancient Greece, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire.

The inaccessibility of Kizkulesi made it the source of many stories and fantasies. Perhaps the most well-known narrative was told by Roman writer Ovidius (Ovid), who started his tale with the departure of Hero from the tower. A priestess of Aphrodite, Hero was prohibited from love, but during a rite designed to honor the goddess, she met Leandros (Leander) and they fell in love.Leandros swam to the island where the Maiden Tower is located on a stormy night when strong winds put out the “fire of love” kindled by Hero, and lost in the darkness, Leandros drowned. Hero committed suicide in sorrow over the death of her beloved by jumping from the tower.

Another story recalls the death of Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Legend has it that a king was told by a seer that his beloved daughter would die of a snakes bite at the age of eighteen. The king sent his daughter to the Maidens Tower to stave off her evil end, but destiny had a way of weaving its threads and a snake carried to the tower in a grape basket gave the girl its fatal kiss. The iron tomb that the king designed for his daughter and placed on top of St. Sophia (Aya Sofia) church had two holes, indicating that the girl could not shake off the malediction even in death.

Another story the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Commene(1143-1180) became angry when he learned that his daughter Leander had a love affair. He commissioned the present tower to be constructed and imprisioned his daughter in it.Because of this ,the tower was also known as theLeander Tower.

The last story comes from Ottoman times. We are told that a warrior called Battal Ghazi made a raid on the tower and captured the treasure and the daughter of the lord of Usku-dar. Ghazi mounted his horse and escaped after the sortie and from this came the well-known Turkish saying, “The horse rider is well over Uskudar.”
