Introduction Ion pump power supplies (IPPS) are

located in booster gallery Supply power to 600 L/s ion pumps

located in booster ring Old IPPS were inaccurate and poorly

efficient Modified IPPS are more productive and

accurate The modification of the IPPS will pave

the way for greater vacuum, thus better quality beam

Page 3: Upgrading 600L/s IPPS

Ion Pumps About 80 pumps located around booster

beam Absorb ions in vacuum tube Pump contains plates Supplied voltage charges plates Ions are attracted to charged plates,

and stick onto the plates With less ions and a better vacuum,

beam is of better quality

IPPS

IPPS are located around booster gallery One IPPS controls one ion pump Delivers voltage to the ion pump Inside IPPS are capacitors, resistors,

diodes, transformers, wires, etc. Project focuses on modification of

Perkin-Elmer 222-0800 IPPS

IPPS are placed in relay racks around booster gallery. The blue label indicates where in booster ring the ion pump is located.

Problem IPPS are over 30 years old Inaccurate read-backs Poor efficiency

Page 8: Upgrading 600L/s IPPS

Solution Investigate read-back inaccuracies Analyze different methods for increased

efficiencies Updating out-dated components

Developing the daughter card Filter noise

Page 9: Upgrading 600L/s IPPS

Daughter Card Contains resistors, capacitors, diodes,

and gates Squared off section in schematic 3 main elements

Top circuit – converts current to voltage Middle circuit – powers card Bottom circuit – controls IPPS

Testing Cards Extender card for safety Adjust R30 to 6.1V

Establish a reference level Verify components measure accurately Run timing tests

Modifying Obtain old power supplies There are 55 Perkin-Elmer 222-0800

IPPS Most components are removed as well

as wires IPPS circuitry remains similar to old
