monthly, family-friendly suggestions on simple ways to care for

the environment and one another. We invite you to join us each

September’s Suggestion: Conduct a Waste Audit

Have you ever examined what goes into your garbage or recycling? What are the items you dispose of most? Conduct a waste audit in your

household and track your waste for the next week. Where can you make changes to reduce your impact?

🌟4) Earthscursions are back for the Season of Creation!

Did you know Pope Francis and ecumenical leaders from around the world have declared September 1 through October 4 the Season

of Creation?  As part of this season, our Healthy Earth Team invites you to gather with us at French Park on Sunday, September 13,

2020 at 1:00 PM to hike and enjoy some socially-distanced time with each other, taking in the beauty of our earth.

We will meet in the lower lot, just as you enter the park, at 3012 Section Rd. Then, we will hike up along the creek to the upper picnic

area, enjoy a snack together (please bring your own snack and a water bottle), and hike back down to our cars.

If you are interested, please reply to [email protected] so we know to expect you!

🌟5) St. Vincent de Paul Story

The phone messages SVDP receives each week tell the stories of so many of our neighbors who have suffered the negative impacts of

the pandemic.

A fty-two-year-old woman with a daughter, twenty-two, left one of those messages this week. In April, the daughter lost her job and

her day-care services. When the daughter was able to get another job, the woman had to babysit her three grandchildren for a time.

Then, just as she was ready to go back to work, the company where she was employed had to close because some employees had

contracted the virus. She was looking for a new job and was three months behind in paying her monthly rent.

Help from our Bellarmine conference and the special parish Coronavirus Community Assistance Fund kept her from being evicted.

Another call came from a young woman whose salary of $13 an hour was just enough to make it possible to pay her bills, but who had

her hours cut when the pandemic began. She managed to pay her rent, but couldn’t keep up with her Duke and water bills. She is now

back to full-time employment, but that income is not enough to pay her back bills.

With the help of the Coronavirus Fund and our Bellarmine conference, those bills have now been paid, giving her peace of mind as

she continues on her journey.

We Vincentians miss our home visits, seeing and talking, praying, hugging, and listening to our neighbors, but the voices we hear over

the phone are lled with gratitude so that we can almost hear their smiles! St. Paul says, “Owe nothing to anyone except to love one

another.” With your generous support, Vincentians every week are showing love to our neighbors, letting them know that someone

cares.

You can support this work by donating to the Coronavirus Community Assistance Fund here.  If you would like to get involved,

contact Jim Doerger at 513-617-2085 or 513-378-8548.  We would love to have you!

🌟Bread for the World

(Have Faith, End Hunger.)

Every year, parishes around the world ask their governments to support legislation to end

hunger as part of the Bread for the World Offering of Letters. With COVID-19 and the

resulting economic slowdowns, access to good nutritious food has become especially

urgent.  This month, Bellarmine is joining with Bread for the World to lobby our

Congresspeople.  We invite you to write and tell our Representatives and Senators to

support legislation that would provide Better Nutrition for a Better Future.

Sending a message has never been easier.  Click on this link and you will be taken to a site

designed by Bread for the World just for this purpose. Fill in the information about yourself on the left side of the form and modify

the Sample Letter on the right side to emphasize what is important to you. Please make the letter YOUR letter.  When you are happy

🌟Ever Ancient, Ever New:

Exploring the Female Diaconate:

A Livestream Panel

Monday, September 14, 7:00-8:15

p.m. EDT with Dr. Anna Miller, Casey

Stanton and Luke Hansen, S.J. and

moderated by Allison Borden and co-

sponsored by Bellarmine Chapel,

the Institute for Spirituality and

Social Justice, and the Center for

Faith and Justice at Xavier University.

The topic of the ordination of women

as permanent deacons has emerged

at three consecutive global synods in

Rome, most notably the recent Synod

of Bishops on the Pan-Amazonian

Region (October 2019), which formally requested that Pope Francis reestablish a papal commission to study the topic. Now that

commission has been formed, which continues the dialogue and discernment in the church. Join this evening of dialogue about the

ministry and leadership of women in the Catholic Church, specically the history of women deacons and the contemporary practice

and theology of the permanent diaconate.  Visit the website for more information and the live link.

On the Journey to Justice: A Civil Rights Pilgrimage - April 5-8, 2021

Our Bellarmine Dismantling Racism Team is organizing a prayerful pilgrimage to Civil Rights sites across Alabama from April 5-8,

2021.  Given that we are upon the 57th Anniversary of the March on Washington (August 28), and all that is going on in our world

around racial justice, we thought this would be a tting time to start promoting this pilgrimage once more.

A yer with more details is available here and pictured above, including registration deadlines, costs ($550 - all inclusive except lunch

and dinners), and a basic itinerary.  At this point, we are hoping to collect basic information from those who might be interested in

joining us on this Active Discipleship experience.

Please ll out this webform if you are considering and want more information!  Plans will evolve as we understand what is possible

with the pandemic.

🌟Catholic Nonviolence and Racial Justice

September 15, 2020 7:30 - 9:00 pm

We stand at a moment of signicant opportunity to make constructive social change. In particular, this summer, we’ve seen renewed

energy in campaigns around the country for racial justice. In our rst session, we focused on nonviolent action that disrupts and

challenges the violence of racism. In this second, we talk with Catholic activists. The tradition and global network of Catholic

Nonviolence offers creative, spiritual paths for making constructive social change. Join us to learn from black Catholics in the U.S.

and Kenya on how their Catholic faith shapes and inspires their nonviolent activism for racial justice. We will also learn about the

global Catholic Nonviolence Initiative accompanying BIPOC voices from violent conict zones, engaging the Vatican, and working to

develop Catholic Social Teaching to focus more on nonviolence. Finally, we will learn about how a U.S. Catholic peace organization,

Pax Christi USA, integrates an anti-racism lens to their work. https://udayton.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYldu-

IVoteCatholic.Org - Help Build the Kingdom on Earth

We are called to live our faith in all aspects of our lives, but – when it comes to voting – this can be difcult. Over the next several

weeks, immerse yourself in the Church’s teaching and gain a fuller understanding of the Church’s commitment to a consistent ethic of

life which guides us to be advocates for a variety of issues related to life and human dignity. Of course, not every issue is morally

equivalent, nor can commitment to one issue excuse indifference to the rest. We will not be telling you for whom or what to vote.

Rather, to inform your vote we encourage discernment, prayer, and a universal call to holiness and compassion.  This 7 week program

Civic Engagement in the 60 Days before the Election

There are many ways to get engaged as a citizen and a Catholic this election season:

1. Make sure you are registered to vote at your current address.  The deadline to register ahead of our November 3 election is

October 5.  If you are an Ohio resident, you can nd more information here.

2. Make a plan for how you will vote - in-person on election day, early in-person, or via mail/absentee.  If you are an Ohio

resident, you can nd information on how to request an absentee ballot here - be sure to do it early to allow enough time to

vote.

3. Help others to do the same!  Bellarmine’s Dismantling Racism Team is going to be offering some volunteer shifts with non-

partisan partners helping with voter registration and absentee voting in September.  If you want to get involved, email Tim

Severyn at [email protected]

4. Sign the Civilize It Pledge - this is an effort of the USCCB to encourage greater civility, clarity, and compassion this election

season, combating the polarization and divisiveness that causes us to label others enemy.  You can sign the pledge here.

Weekly Prayers for Solidarity

Prayers for Solidarity happens every Monday at 11 AM for 15 minutes on Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio Facebook page.  You

can pray with us here!

Actively Responding to COVID-19 - Solidarity Masks and Advocacy

Wearing a mask amid the pandemic is an act of solidarity, one of the principals of Catholic Social Teaching.

Especially with a mask mandate in effect in the state of Ohio, it is important for us to do our part to take care of

one another.  While there are many good causes through which you can order a mask, the Ignatian Solidarity

Network is selling masks on their website that say “Solidarity” on them.  You can nd those masks here.

Social Mission Overview

Bellarmine Chapel is a church committed to Vatican II and the revolutionary idea that the Catholic church should serve as a eld

hospital, promoting active missionary discipleship amongst all our parishioners.   You can see a visual depiction of the way our

community works to fulll that mission here.   And you can learn more about many of these initiatives by clicking on the remaining

tabs under the Social Mission Initiatives heading.  Please feel free to reach out to our Director of Social Mission, Tim Severyn,

at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
