MAY/JUNE 2013

Nutshell

The spring and summer seasons at The Arboretum offer fascinating programs, plenty of trails to hike, beautiful scenery, and endless photo opportunities.

The Arboretum looks forward to the spring Plant Sale & Garden Fair on May 18, Bonsai Show on June 8 & 9 and Music in the Garden series with performances happening July through September. Our 1st Saturday Garden Wagon Tour program begins in May at 10am. This gives visitors the chance to go on a guided wagon tour through our grounds and collections. The tours will have a different focus each time. For kids, our calendar is full of learning experiences at the various Camp Dawes offerings. StoryTrail TM opening is May 18 and lasts through the summer. For details on programs and events, check the listings in this Nutshell, or visit www.dawesarb.org to view the calendar online and register for programs.

Already this year, Maple Syrup Madness brought visitors from all over to discover the maple syruping process. Over 3,200 adults and children walked the trail to the cabin, more than 1,200 gallons of sap were collected and nearly 27 gallons of syrup were produced.

Arbor Day is always one of our most popular events! A thank you is extended to The Energy Cooperative for helping to sponsor this event, in celebration of trees and nature!

September 14, the Ohio Sustainable Landscapes Symposium is back for its second year! This year, the symposium focuses on edible landscaping. Create gardens that are earth and pollinator friendly. Learn new ways to integrate “green” ideas into traditional practices. Registration is now open! Full details can be found at www.dawesarb.org.

2013 also brings new updates and improvements to our trail systems. Watch for more news on trails in upcoming Nutshell newsletters.

Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new StoryTrailTM at The Arboretum! Discover a trail especially intended for children where reading comes alive. Our collaboration with the Licking County Library continues on opening day, Saturday, May 18, from 10am - noon with the Bookmobile and activities for the whole family. Come prepared to walk, skip, run and explore while enjoying a beloved children’s story on a specially-designed, family-friendly trail. This year’s trail features Shutta Crum’s book The Bravest of the Brave. Children are entertained by the catchy rhymes and a surprise ending in this story of a courageous skunk on his way home through the woods at night. Bring your whole family to celebrate the day at The Dawes Arboretum!

The featured story is available for purchase (while supplies last) in Daweswood Gifts located in the Visitors Center.

Opens May 18, 2013Author Shutta Crum makes an appearance at the opening and walks the trail with the kids!

The Dawes Arboretum would like to welcome Lindsay Wilson to our staff. After spending the majority of her professional career in public education, Lindsay has joined The Arboretum in the role of Development Associate. Lindsay’s extensive computer applications experience is an asset to our Development Office, as she will be responsible for overseeing the donor database, managing member mailings, generating acknowledgement letters, and responding to general member inquiries. The Arboretum’s fundraising program has grown significantly in the past year with the addition of our first-ever Director of Development in 2012. Grants and special donations have provided for new projects that would not have otherwise been possible, including an education program with students of

Newark’s Heritage Middle School and the construction of our Learning Garden, to open in July. Lindsay will be integral in expanding The Arboretum’s fundraising program even further, especially membership. Lindsay lives in the Somerset area with her husband and three daughters. She is a Girl Scout Troop Leader, volunteers with the Somerset Elementary PTA, and enjoys scrapbooking and genealogy research. Lindsay is available to field your general membership questions at 740.323.2355 or [email protected].

Staff Introduction: Lindsay Wilson

“I’m looking forward to getting to know more of our members and sharing information about all the wonderful work The Arboretum can only accomplish with their continued support,” says Lindsay.

Celts CrossingJuly 14, 2013 | 1:30 – 3pm

Celts Crossing embraces a rich tradition of Irish music, unafraid to throw a few surprises into the yarns of old. Band members include Elizabeth Donahue-Redrow on guitar, pipes, and vocals; Paul Mumma on Line 6 guitars, tin whistle, electric bagpipes, and vocals; Frank O’Brien-Bernini on world percussion; Robin Brown on fiddle and vocals; and Scott Rawdon on upright bass and vocals. Influences include rock, punk, folk, classical and blues, yet the band embraces the Irish tradition in an eclectic, yet fun and approachable, melting pot vibe.

Dr. Lopez and the LocoRoaches Orchestra July 27, 2013 | 6:30 – 8pm

An energetic seven-piece Latin jazz group consisting of trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano, bass drum-set and Latin percussionist. The band plays great Latin arrangements of tunes written by some of the top Latin jazz arrangers in the country as well as original tunes composed by group founder Richard Lopez. The musical sound combines fun, swinging Latin grooves with high energy, Cubop (Latin and Bebop jazz) improvisation. The ensemble includes some of the finest jazz horn and rhythm players in Columbus: members of the Columbus Jazz orchestra, and performers who are faculty at several of Columbus’ major universities as well as leaders in the jazz club scene around Ohio.

Sterling String Quartet August 11, 2013 | 1:30 – 3pm

Let violinists Elaine Swinney and Peter Harris, violist Victoria Capper and cellist Dan Clark provide you with a musical excursion that will take you many places “from The Concert Hall to The Club.” Each of these musicians brings a wealth of individual musical accomplishments from performing with the Newark-Granville Symphony, the TransSiberian Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony to working privately with internationally renowned jazz violinist Christian Howes. Selections from the quartet will include your favorite Bach, Handel and Vivaldi; blues and jazz; the Beatles “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to today’s popular tunes.

Music, Movie and Brews in the Garden August 24, 2013 | 6:30pm

Start the evening with the Spruce Campbells and rock out to intricate fuzz-pop with catchy hooks and lush, layered arrangements that define this Columbus band’s sound. Afterward, enjoy plenty of laughs and lighthearted entertainment under the stars as The Arboretum features the 1997 comedy film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery!” This quirky comedy will surely have you practicing your English accent as you quote many of the film’s famous lines. Don’t forget to bring your pillow and blanket, favorite movie snacks and visit the beer garden featuring Ohio micro-brews! It’s groovy, baby, yeah!*Please be advised that this movie is rated PG-13 for nudity, sex-related dialogue and humor.

Special Children’s Concert: FireflySeptember 8, 2013 | 1:30 – 3pm

Firefly will play a variety of original and contemporary cover tunes about the natural world. They will introduce children to songs about trees, insects, birds and flowers while encouraging them to use their senses to experience the world around them. Firefly features bass, piano, drums and vocals that are upbeat, fun and will have everyone singing along. In addition to the concert, The Dawes Arboretum has fun activities planned for all children. Popsicles will be given to children while supplies last.

Music in the Garden performances cover a variety of genres and will appeal to almost everyone. The concerts are all held in the All Seasons Garden located just north of The Arboretum’s Visitors Center. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnic lunches to these free concerts.

A yearPlant Sale & Garden Fair, Plant List (partial) Saturday, May 18 | 9am – 3pm Storm Damage Clean-up Stats:

The derecho storm on June 29, 2012, caused extensive damage to The Arboretum with 85-mile-per-hour winds wreaking havoc across our 1,848-acre grounds. Clean-up efforts started immediately after the storm hit and the major work was completed on February 14, 2013 (7.5 months later).

On the main grounds of The Arboretum, over 100 collection trees were downed, including some trees which held collection significance. Arboretum East suffered extensive damage, and our concert stage was also destroyed.

Many unbudgeted costs have gone into the labor of cleaning up after this storm. Director of Development Erin Neeb states, “With more than 1,800 acres of land to manage, in addition to several buildings open to visitors, we are bound to occasionally encounter emergency maintenance needs. We appreciate donors who understand that unrestricted contributions allow us the latitude to react to emergency situations as they arise and ensure that any threats to public safety are

abated so we can keep our gates open to the community.” The Arboretum appreciates unrestricted donations which give us the opportunity to react immediately to our most urgent funding needs.
