The Beginnings

The original name was Evelyn Graves Drama

Club. The Drama Club traveled by car and bus

presenting "Christ thru Drama". The Drama Club

was established in 1971, to develop hidden talents

and present participants and audiences alike with

a true cultural enriching experience from the stage.

Also during the early 1970's, the Evelyn Graves

Day Care Center was established. The Day Care

was directed by her daughter R. Jean Jones. In

1981, the Evelyn Graves Christian Academy was

established. God gave Dr. Graves three words to

start the school, "Reading - Writing - Arithmetic".

God also told Dr. Graves to "Train young people to

become Champions for Christ". The Academy held

their first Commencement Exercise June, 1983.

DR. EVELYN GRAVES, a native of Marion,

South Carolina, is the visionary and CEO who

founded the multi-faceted Evelyn Graves Ministries Church

(EGMC) in 1982. She has opened several community-based

educational centers in Philadelphia, including the Evelyn

Graves Christian Academy and Learning center, School of

Performing Arts, Bible School, Adult Continuing Education

Program, Summer Day Camp and a youth mentoring

program. In addition to educational activities, Dr. Graves

has served her community through free food programs for

individuals and groups in the greater Delaware Valley area.

SHE HAS BEEN widely acclaimed as a playwright

and is nationally and internationally respected as a noted

pioneer of creative community drama. In 1971, as

artistic director and founder of the Evelyn Graves Drama

Productions (EGDP), Dr. Graves became the catalyst for

improving the quality of life for many, through performing

arts in the urban community. EGDP is a non-profit theatre

troupe that strongly promotes the cultural arts, with over

thirty-five years of performing tradition and education

in the arts in Philadelphia, South Jersey and Delaware.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION, the drama troupe has strongly

promoted cultural arts to generate positive self-awareness

within African American communities by traveling to

colleges, universities, prisons and churches. Approximately

seventeen of the founder’s original works, along with

adaptations of Langston Hughes’ “Black Nativity” and

Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” have affected over 400,000

families locally and internationally. Dr. Graves is also credited

with the “Little League Voter Registration Campaigners,”

a production which netted the largest number of new

registered voters in the City of Philadelphia, 1992-1993.

BECAUSE OF THREE and a half decades of notable

contributions to the community, Dr. Graves has received

numerous citation awards from the Whi9te House in

Washington, DC to the Blue House in Seoul, Korea. The

Governor of Pennsylvania, House of Representatives, PA

Council on the Arts, NAACP, Federal Court House in NJ,

Smithsonian Institute, Commonwealth of PA, National

Association of Clergy Women and the Mayor of Philadelphia

have all recognized Dr. Graves for her outstanding works.

She has also received awards from the Who’s Who of

Business Professionals, Shirley Chisolm and Mary McLeod

Bethune Awards. On the 30th of March, 2008, Dr.

Graves received the prestigious NAACP Legends Award.

DR. GRAVES IS the anointed pastor of the Evelyn Graves

Ministries Church, which is located in Yeadon, PA. She was

educated in the schools of Marion, SC and further3ed her

education in Philadelphia under the tutelage of the renowned

Dr. Howard Jameson of the Jameson Bible Institute and

Jameson School of Theology. In 197-, she received a

Bachelor of Theology degree and later received a Doctor of

Philosophy degree from the Jameson Bible Institute. Honorary

doctorate degrees were conferred upon Dr. Graves from the

United Theological Seminary and the Seashore Bible College.

SHE IS THE MOTHER of six adult children, a

grandmother to 10 grandchildren, and great grandmother

to eight great grandchildren, all of whom are pleased

and proud of the positive empowerment produced

from the lifelong leadership of Dr. Evelyn Graves.

All that has been accomplished by this great woman of God is

often quoted by her from the book of Zechariah 4:6 “…Not by

might, nor by power, but, by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.”

Love the EGMC Praise Dancers

On November 16, 2009 my one and a half year old grandson

was rushed to CHOP hospital. The doctors found that he was

in need of a new heart. He was kept on life support for 21

days. Dr. Graves and the Evelyn Graves Ministries Church

family all prayed for Zion to receive a new heart. He received

his new heart on May 16, 2010 and came home on June 16,

2010. Zion is a happy little two year old, running around the

house telling everybody “no”. Dr. Graves, my family and I can’t

thank you enough. Your prayers and kindness are giving Zion

another chance at life and to one day say, “yes” to the Lord!!
