teacher March 18th!

• If there is a possibility you might not be at IHS next year, register for classes anyway so you have a spot in the event you stay.

• Step 1: Chose your English and US History option. All 11th graders must take these two classes.

• If you are applying or reapplying to an academy, you may have to complete an application. Go to irvington.org under the programs tab.

• Family Coordinators: • SHAPE: Ms. Avina:

[email protected] • ITA: Mr. Albizo: [email protected]• CCA: Ms. Holmberg:

[email protected]• NMAA: Ms. Burton

[email protected]• www.nmaaihs.org

• Step 2: Complete if you are taking AP Classes. Students must get teacher approval for EVERY AP class they take.

• Step 3: Complete if you are registering for AP English or AP US History. If you are signing up for AP English, you will have to attend a mandatory meeting that will be announced at a later time.

• Step 4: Choose a math class. You will need to have your current math teacher’s recommendation for any math class.

• Step 5: Complete if you are registering for an AP Math class.

Page 5: Updated: 2/2013. Registration form is due to your English teacher March 18 th ! If there is a possibility you might not be at IHS next year, register.

• Step 6: Choose your electives. English, US History and Math are the only required classes for 11th graders (unless you are missing credits in a subject area). Science and Language are considered electives in 11th grade.

• Choose your electives thoughtfully based on meeting graduation requirements and college admission requirements.

• List classes in order of preference and make sure to list an alternate elective. If you do not add an alternate elective and the class you want is full, an elective will be chosen for you.

• Make sure to have teachers sign for EVERY course that requires a teacher’s signature or the course request will not be honored. Courses that need a signature say [Teacher Rec.] next to them on the Elective Options Form. This includes level 3 and higher of a language and studio art.

DO NOT• DO NOT take AP classes just because your friends/peers are.

Everyone has different ability levels. Take the most challenging classes that YOU can still do well in.

• DO NOT take AP classes just to impress colleges. GPA is still the most important factor in college admissions. If you take 6 AP classes but do not do well in them, it will not matter for college admissions that you took them and will negatively impact your application.

AP ClassesIf you are registering for AP classes:• Make sure you are prepared and have an interest in the

subject.• Make sure you will have the time necessary to be successful in

all of your classes.• Remember to take into consideration clubs, extra-

curricular activities, job/volunteer work, etc.• AP and honors classes cannot be made up in summer

school so if you do poorly, you are stuck with the NC.• Understand that you will not have the opportunity to transfer

to a college prep course once the school year begins. The number of spaces in college prep classes are based on student requests at the time of registration.

If a student fails a semester of a course they need to retake the course the following year or complete the semester of the course in summer school (honors courses, AP courses, and math courses above Algebra 2/Trig are not available in summer school).

Teacher recommendation is required for all math levels. This guide is the recommended sequence based on previous Irvington student performance.

To graduate, students need 30 credits of math including both semesters of Algebra 1 (okay if completed in 7th or 8th grade). Computer Support is the only non-college prep math class offered at Irvington that gives students general math credits for graduation.

Beginning with the class on 2015, the UCs and CSUs will require that students take a geometry class (okay if completed in 7th or 8th grade). Students will no longer be able to use a higher level math class to validate the geometry requirement.
