4   PCC UPDATE     SUMMER 2005

I cannot prove

  • He is the God of the Bible, but I believe He is.

  • God created all things, but I believe He created all things.

  • Jesus is God, but I believe Jesus is God.

I cannot prove

  • there is a heaven and a hell, but I believe that both exist.

  • Jesus died for my sins, but I believe that He did.

  • the original autographs of the Bible were inspired,

but I believe God breathed every word.

I cannot prove

  • God has preserved His inspired Word for us today, but I believe that He preserved every jot and tittle.

  • my Authorized Version is His inspired Wordin the English language, but I believe it is.

I cannot prove there is a God, but

I choose to believe there is a God.This spring, the En-richment Conference and BibleConference were both tremendousblessings. Many expressed theirappreciation.

“We feel greatly enriched by Godthrough the speakers and their help-ful, encouraging sessions.

“Pastors need to be fed andedified. I listen to preaching tapesand go to conferences when I can,but most often cannot get away.We do not get much on the radiowhere we are. Most often, the only preacher I hear is me. God’s graceis certainly sufficient, but He cre-ated the Body to be interdependent.Thank you for reaching out to an-swer this need.

“Every time I come to campus, Ifeel as if I am in Heaven’s politicalembassy on earth. I know it isbecause of the power of God’s pres-ence at work there. One thing PCChas demonstrated to me—‘Godis able of these stones to raise upchildren unto Abraham,’ and He isable to do that for fundamentalism. He does not need those institu-tions which are fast departing fromHim.

“We will continue to encourage young people to seek the Lord aboutattending PCC. We know of nobetter place for them.”

—Pastor, KS

“The Bible Conference preachingwas a tremendous blessing. Godused the sermons to do a real andlasting work in my heart. The effecton me was colossal.

My life was changed at PCC, andI desire to see the same happen forother young people.”

—Youth Director, AL

“Now  faith is the substance of things hoped for,

the evidence of things not seen.

For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Through faith

weunderstand

6 PCC UPDATE  SUMMER 2005

PCC provides a firm biblical foun-dation for every Bible major.

The pastoral ministry major includes

intensive book studies from Genesisto Revelation along with Greek andHebrew. The faculty integrate Bibletruth with academic and spiritualapplication, giving students a lovefor the Word and a servant’s heart.

Pastor Colan Deather-idge  (’94, M’96), pas-tor of Pocatello Bap-tist Church, ID, says,“The greatest tools

PCC provided me were the empha-sis on biblical study and biblicallanguages.”

The 400 students in the weekly Minis-terial Seminar hear seasoned pastorsshare their wisdom and experience.Campus Church pastor Jim Schettlercovers practical topics such as wed-dings, baptisms, the Lord’s Supper, biblical counseling, etc.

The Campus Church, a local inde-pendent Baptist church planted ina college setting, provides a modelof faithfulness to biblical truth, a

servant’s spirit, and solid preach-ing. Pastoral majors are involved invisitation, teaching Sunday school, choir / orchestra, Master Clubs, and

Pastor Phil Green (’99) said,“The Campus Church min-istry was a great blessing tome. I was exposed to many aspects of the ministry be-

cause a local church was intricately connected to my education.”

Ministerial students also serve in26 area churches, and last summer

59 ministerial students served as in-terns in churches across America.

Pastoral ministry majors take the

Church Planting Seminar taught by guest pastors and church plantingleaders. Several PCC grads are now planting churches in various areas of the nation.

Hundreds of PCC grads serve as pas-tors, assistant pastors, and youth di-rectors.

It is exciting to hear how the pastoralministry graduates are serving God.

The doctrine of the trinity of God is introduced inGenesis when God said, “Let us make man in our im-

age, after our likeness” — Gen. 1:26. The plural pronouns( us, our, and our  ) reveal God as a holy trinity — one Godin three Persons.

“The Lord our God is one Lord” — Deut. 6:4.God is one, yet He is in three Persons equalin power.

The three Persons of the Godhead are: Godthe Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

All three Persons of the Trinity were active in creation.“In the beginning God  (the Father) created the heavenand the earth . . . .   And the spirit of God  moved upon the

face of the waters” — Gen. 1:1–2. The NT refers to God theSon in creation, “For by him (Jesus) were all things cre-ated, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or princi-

palities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him” — Col. 1:16.

Man—in the image of God

“God created man in his own image” — Gen. 1:27. Of all thecreation, only man was created in the imageof God. The trinity of man best helps us un-derstand the Triune God.

Adam, created as a trinity, had three parts:body, soul, and spirit. “I pray God your

whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus

Christ” — I Thess. 5:23. Yet Adam was only one man, notthree, even as God is one God.

Three parts of man

1.The visible body  houses the soul and spirit un-til the body dies. Death occurs when the soul andspirit depart from the body.  The Old Testament re-fers to death by saying the person “gave up the ghost” —Gen. 25: 8, 17; 35:29.

2.The invisible soul in-cludes the mind, emo-tions, and will. Wemight say it is the real“you.” The soul isimmortal, whichmeans thatafter thebody dies,

the soul liveson forever, either inheaven or in hell, andthat depends on whether theperson trusted Christ as Savior.

At death, the believer’s soul and spirit go to live withGod, “to be absent from the body, and to be present withthe Lord” —II Cor. 5:8. Lazarus “was carried by the angelsinto Abraham’s bosom” —Luke 16:22. Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” —Luke 23:43.

3.The invisible spirit is the person’s link  or connectionwith God. It is the part of man that was made forcommunion with God. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” —John 4:24. When Adam sinned, his spirit died, andhe was cut off from fellowship with God. Yet Adamlived to be 930 years old. Spiritual death in hellis the destiny of all who do not trust Christ as Sav-ior. Jesus said, “whosoever believeth in him should not perish (hell), but have everlasting life (heaven)”— John 3:16.

New birth gives spiritual life

After Adam’s sin, each person is born into the worldspiritually dead with no communion with God. Forman’s spirit to live, he must be born again. Jesus saidto the religious leader Nicodemus, “Except a manbe born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” —John 3:3. For man’s immortal soul to enter heaven, hemust have a new birth. That means, the spirit of Godmust quicken (bring to life) his dead spirit in order forhim to have communion with God and to have eternallife.

“Let us make man  in our image, after  our likeness”
