Dear Readers,

I want to start off by saying thank you for reading the very

first issue of DIY LIVING. I was influenced by the fact that

I myself am a young adult with my own apartment and can’t af-ford everything I want to make

my apartment mine. So i have started doing DIY projects than ever before. I hope this magazine

will help others in the same situation as me. Start-ing off than with a holiday issue with ways on how to decorate your place or gifts to give couldn’t be

a better place to start.

Happy reading!

Christmas

Chic Costume Jewelry Christmas Trees are a fan-tastic way to dress up ta-bles, shelves and can even make great centerpieces. Just glue some broken or unused costume jewelry to a Styro-foam cone, glue it to a base in a painted terra cotta pot, and you have a beautiful Christmas decoration for your home.

Get any kind of can, just make sure that it is cleaned very throughly. Take a nail and hammer and gently hit the nail where you wanna start the design, once you see an indent then hit harder until it goes through. Then either paint the cans or spray paint them. Once it is all dry, place a key candle in it and you are done! Enjoy this on the ta-ble during dinner.

A Beautiful Mess, a blog is run by the sister duo of El-sie Larson & Emma Chapman, who want to help other women have a “homemade lifestyle”. In 2010, when Elsie partnered with Emma, is when the business really took off. Both girls work on this business together, however Elsie is more of the creative aspect, while Emma is more business savvy, which en-titles to take chances to help their company move forward.

On A Beautiful Mess, they give helpful everyday tips, crafts, recipes and of course home decorating. Their decorating ideas are not just DIY but also new trends and how you can make it work. Another item that they post is when Elsie does before and after photos of different rooms in her own home! This kind of post helps show their viewers that it is not just ideas but ac-tually how to get the look and how it actually works together.

Elsie is all about redecorating and after requesting to see the room makeover Elsie invited me to come take a tour and it

was incredible to see the amazing changes between what it was and what it became. She took an older looking dark room and turned it into a bright young dining room, you would think that you were in a different house. After going through the decora-tion we sat down with Elsie to talk about why she chose to do what she did. DIY Living: Why did you choose the bold floral print for the dining room? Isn’t it hard to match things with it?

Elsie Larson: Yes, it is hard to have other things in the din-ing room specially to host a party, but it lets the room speak for itself. The wallpaper is beautiful and fills up the room, so half of the work is done!

DL: Another bold choice is having a white carpet in the din-ing room. Why did you choose this?

EL: This carpet might be scary for some to have in their

14

homes because of the color, but it just fits into the room.

DL: If someone didn’t care to have a white rug, what other colors might you suggest?

EL: If I had to recommend a color oth-er than white, it would have to be a shade of green to go with the leaves in the wallpaper and it would also go with any plants that you have within the room. The rug would not have to

match the wallpaper, but I would pick something that helped enhance the col-

or.

DL: So our readers can get a perspective on what they could be able to create, can you please point out the pieces in the room that are DIY?

EL: The picture I got from the internet and created the frame DIY & the cabinet on the right is a repurposed cabi-net to hold our glassware.

DL: What else did you do to change the room?

EL: We took out the dark curtains which let more light in to make the room more inviting. We also switched out the old dark flooring for lighter wood. All the light colors just make the room so much more inviting and fun!

15

DL: Could you do something like this in any room?

EL: Absolutely! Keep the wallpaper but change out the size or color of the rug. Bring out colors of whatever wallpaper you use, have it show who you are and what makes you, you!

Along with their blog the girls have two apps, A Beautiful Mess & Party Party; they are also teachers for online classes at Shop A Beautiful Mess. They also realized two books and have their own product line, Elsie & Emma know how to do DIY for those who can’t help but have been a tad messy.

The New Bedroom Style for 2017

Turn the Page to Learn How to Get the Look!

After some research on WGSN one of the top trends on how to decorate your bedroom for the spring/summer of 2017 is called Pause. The idea behind Pause is coming into a calm, relaxing environment with simple pieces by using soft colors and subtle textures.“Using colors such as grey, clarity white, almond and sage and mixing them with dark espresso and stone blue” (WGSN). Copper will add a beautiful metallic so when the light hits the copper details the room will sparkle some. “The copper will also blend nicely with apricot and a pop of coral” (WGSN). Obviously you don’t have to stick to every detail about Pause, for exam-

ple instead of the stone blue you could substitute it with lavender or another cool pas-tel. Instead of using coral as your pop of color you should go with your favorite color so when you go into your room, you could feel more at peace being surrounded by your fa-vorite things. Below are from the color company Pantone to show what colors are actually being used.

Some of the textiles being used for your new bedroom is

19

“pure & simple” which is ba-sically basic plain easy-care linens that you can find at any store that sells bedding such as Target or Ikea. You want to think about getting the “linens in light tones of grey, beige, or other neutral tones” (WGSN); this gives you the option to change your bed-ding without having to change every-thing else. If you real-ly want to give the idea of a re-fined and so-phisticated lifestyle, use “silk bedding and sheets in matte dusty tones. If you like silk but don’t want to be plain about it, there are bedding with piping in it or you could get the bed spread using silk gauze as the material” (WGSN).

There is nothing wrong with using matte bedding, but you can also spicy things up with your bed spread. The bedding textiles being used are subtle geometric prints, hazy florals, and refined

pleats. A really “sophis-ticated geometric

pattern are overlapping

semi-cir-cles” (WGSN), if you en-

joy playing with prints

and textures get a different

patterned sheet in the same color family or in a neu-tral print whether it be subtle or not. With hazy floral you must be careful because flo-rals can be either mature or child-like, so just be aware of which direction that you are going for. Now you want to be mature but you are also young and want to show that,

sateen folds, wide pleats and darts will give you a more el-egant look” (WGSN)without doing anything but making the bed. Do not think that these just apply to your bed. Using these colors and textures in other parts of your room will truly give you a room that makes you feel relaxed and

recharge to take on the world.

so look for large over “laying floral patterns in a light grey” (WGSN)or other tones such as a dusty rose, dusty sage, some-thing natural.

The final trend appear-ing in the bedroom for spring summer of 2017 is the use of the refined pleats. “Cotton

The Do’s & Don’ts for Making your

Bedroom your Sanctuary

Don’t:Overcrowd your room.

Your bedroom is supposed to be where you feel relax. Being around a clutter mess-

that also means unable to walk easily is not relaxing at all.

Do:Upgrade your old furniture.

Instead of going out and buying new furniture when nothing is wrong with your current furniture makes no sense. If you want something new either give it a new color, add fab-

ric to it or give it a whole new life as a new object, such as taking an old television stand you don’t need any

more and make it into a breakfast bar.

23

Do:Use up all the space you can for storage.

Under your bed, hanging bags and belts on the wall, or even using old boxes. Label the boxes and stack them in

neat piles somewhere out of the way.

Don’t:Hide in the dark.

Sitting in the dark is no way to help your mood and natural light is the best

thing to help make you more productive and get things done in your busy life. Sheer curtains or keeping the curtains open will help bring that light in when you need it.

Bonus! Get a color that goes with your room and it will instantly pull the

whole room together.
