This announcement was met with great uncertainty by all Clubs and Hotels in Victoria who currently hold a Gaming Licence. It was proposed that all Clubs and Pubs would partake in an Auction whereby the successful bidder would purchase the right to obtain Gaming Entitlements for a ten (10) year period. Your Board over the last 20 months has seen this Gaming Industry Auction as a very significant off field issue and we sought advice from a number of informed industry sources. Over the last 20 months much rumour and innuendo has clouded this issue with the uncertainty of maintaining our 61 machines at Seagulls Nest and also the possible cost of purchasing the machines for the next 10 year period (2012 –2021). It was announced over 12 months ago that all Clubs who currently have gaming machines would be given the opportunity to purchase up to 40 machines in a pre-auction offer to be conducted by the State Government. The price of gaming entitlements in this pre-auction was determined by the State Government and based on each club’s revenue at the time. The Williamstown Football Club offer was that we could purchase the first 20 gaming machine entitlements for $69,787.84 per machine and the next 20 gaming entitlements for $77,542.15 per machine. If the Williamstown Football Club Board had of accepted this offer it would have cost $2,946,599.80 to pre-purchase the 40 gaming machines. Throughout Victoria 87% of all clubs took advantage of the pre-auction offer which gave them the certainty of purchasing machines and accepted the State Government’s pre-auction offer. The Williamstown Football Club Board decided to reject the pre-auction offer and instead to take our chances at the Auction which was held for all Clubs and Pubs in Victoria last Monday 10th May. At the Auction last Monday the Williamstown Football Club was successful in purchasing 66 gaming entitlements (extra 5 gaming machines) at the price of $5,500 per gaming entitlement (total cost $363,000). The end result of the development will be a first class restaurant and convention/conference centre seating up to 280 people and it will be available for weddings, corporate conventions, corporate conferences and other important social events. Over the last 20 months much rumour and innuendo has clouded this issue with the uncertainty of maintaining our 61 machines at Seagulls Nest and also the possible cost of purchasing the machines for the next 10 year period (2012 –2021).

Adam Potter joined Williamstown Football Club this year after successfully coaching Coburg Reserves for 4 seasons and being Senior Assistant Coach to Jade Rawlings in 2009. Adam Potter begun his coaching journey with the Western Jets Development Squads and is Year 9 Co-ordinator at Williamstown High School. Adam Potter has also taken on the added responsibility as Forwards Coach with our Senior side and in conjunction with Todd Clark they have formulated a Development Program for our youngsters at Williamstown.

Q. Your job description is extremely varied – how have you approached all of these responsibilities?

Making sure I put the time and effort that is required into the three roles that I have at the club is important. I enjoy coaching the development squad and all it involves e.g. planning for a game, reviewing of the game and the game day coaching. Working with such a young group is exciting and there is nothing better than to see players like Kwame McHarg, Dean Muir and even more experienced players like Matt Grossman playing good footy at senior level after starting in the development squad. The senior role is also something I really enjoy, it can become a bit rushed on match day but a guy like Matt Little has been a great support and he ensures that the Forward group

are fully aware of the expectations before a game. Peter German is very supportive also and it is great that he has me involved at senior level as well. The Development Coaching role that I also have is an area I am very passionate about. Todd Clark and I work with a young group of 20 players and educate the players not only about their individual improvement on the ground but also other important aspects off the ground. We have been able to put together a development plan for this year and this has been very beneficial to the young players. This plan will be reviewed at the end of the year. It was made very clear when I accepted the position that I would be taking on the three roles as part of the job, and to be honest I love the involvement that I have and I am very thankful to be able to develop in such a rewarding job.

Q. Senior Coach Peter German was adamant that the Development of our 1st year players was crucial in 2010. How have yourself and Todd Clark approached the on and off field demands?

When I first met Peter I could see he was very passionate about getting a core group of young players to the club who we could work with and develop to become good players for Williamstown or take the next step to the A.F.L ranks.

Having Todd Clark come on board during the summer was also fantastic as he is very enthusiastic about Development and also had excellent ideas in putting together a Development Plan. Todd and I put together a plan that consisted of 3 areas. 1. The expectations of being a Williamstown player, 2. A skills and football development component. 3. A Life and Professional Development focus. The Development program has been backed by the club and all resources have been put in place to get the program up and running. To date it has been very successful and we have had the players working on goal setting, individual skill programs, and educational programs with the local Police on expectations in the community in relation to Alcohol and decision making. Our young players are developing and some have already taken the next step to the senior ranks and I think we have got some exciting young talent which we have seen in the development squad games. The overall aim is to ensure that when these young players take their first step into the footy club that they have a support network that will not only develop their individual football but also support them with what they are doing away from the club also.

Q. Having spent 4 years in the VFL at Coburg how have you found your move to Williamstown?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the move to Williamstown. It has worked out really well as I work in Williamstown and working with Brendan and the other coaches has been fantastic. I learnt a fair bit in my time at Coburg and worked with some great coaches but the move has been very rewarding thus far. The people around the club make you feel welcome straight away and the existing players from last year have been enthusiastic about the changes that have occurred over the summer. There is a genuine supporter base at the club and the Williamstown community get right behind the seagulls.

Q. The Williamstown List in 2010 boasted 22 new players and how have you assessed the young talent at Williamstown and which players have impressed you?

The young players that have come into the club have demonstrated the commitment required with their training, some have then been rewarded with senior opportunities and others have been very consistent with their performance in the development squad.

Ed Carr is one that has really impressed, he has played the first 5 rounds of the year in the seniors, but the way he approaches his training and the leadership he has shown as a first year senior player has been exceptional. Jake Wilson is another who has impressed, Jake came to us from Portland and is a player who probably didn’t feel he belonged at VFL level but has been one of the most consistent players in the development squad. The young talent that we have recruited this year will hopefully become long term players at the club and that was our aim when we went out and recruited a young list of players.

Q. How important do you view the 23rd player rule and the ability to select 1st year TAC Cup players on your list and also players from the Western Jets?

The 23rd player rule is a fantastic initiative by the VFL, it gives young players the opportunity to play 2 games straight up at VFL level. We have seen the benefits of the rule this year at the club with Ed Carr, Josh Griffiths and Kwame Mcharg all playing two games and then holding their spot to play as part of the selected 22. It also gives us the opportunity to expose young Jets players to VFL footy and we saw Jesse Fortune come in and play against Coburg, and contribute with a goal and playing a part in two other goals. I think it is a great rule and something I would like to see at reserve level is the introduction of a 23rd player. We could expose some Jets kids to the level and also players who may be on the cusp of gaining a regular spot may get the opportunity by introducing an extra player.

Q. How do you assess the standard of VFL Reserves football in comparison with local metropolitan football?

It is a very interesting question and depending on who you ask there are differing views. I believe the standard of the reserve competition is very good. Why I say this is because players who have been dominant at local level and come into the reserve grade can find the game to be quicker and they don’t have as much time to make a decision. I believe the longer a young player stays in a VFL system the better player they will be in the long run, local clubs will then benefit if a player who has been in the VFL system for a long period goes back and plays at that level. It is not only their individual game that they will develop but they have an opportunity to play against senior VFL players and current AFL players who for whatever reason are playing in the reserve competition.

Gulls Corner

With the announcement that the new development at Burbank Oval is now going ahead, this season will be the last with facilities as they currently exist. In the 2011 season Home Games will not be played at Burbank Oval and our small band of helpers will be able to take a break.

It is important that we continue to encourage members to assist where they can as when we return to Burbank Oval in 2012 we will again need to continue our fundraising activities as we have always done. For the remainder of 2010 season anyone who can give us some of their time at our Home Games it would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know at our half time gathering at Home Games.

The challenge will be to continue growing the Gulls Supporters Group as we have during 2010. It is very exciting to have the redevelopment but we must keep in mind that the club will still need financial assistance from the “Gulls” during 2011.

Thank you to all members who assist at home games— without your help we would not be able to assist the club reach their goal of improving the facilities which currently exist at Burbank Oval. I believe our wonderful Club has a very exciting and bright future.

Cheers

Judi Jeremiah

1990 Premiership Reunion

Where the Seagulls Land

'Where The Seagulls Nest' is an eleven minute docmentary made by Williamstown teenager Jesse Maskell during his VCE media studies last year. The documentary traces the origins of Burbank Oval and its various uses over the past 160 years. It combines archival footage and home movies as five locals who love the ground tell their stories: Williamstown Football Club General Manager Brendan Curry, President Trevor Monti, long time Club volunteers Ronnie Williams, Janet Dooley and Geoff van Wyngaarden.

WG Grace, WL Floyd, street parades, athletics meetings, old score-boards, and punch-ups with Port Melbourne supporters are all recalled in this short history. Even Ned Kelly gets a mention.

Where The Seagulls Nest can be borrowed from Williamstown Library and is also available for $15 from Seagulls Bookshop, Nelson Place, Williamstown (Ph: 9397 1728).

The Williamstown Football Club will be celebrating the 20 year reunion of our 1990 Premiership win at our Home Game Luncheon on Saturday 19th June when we host the Casey Scorpions. Phil Cleary will be the guest speaker on this day. All 1990 Premiership Players are invited to attend the President’s Luncheon on this day. The Luncheon will commence at 11am (ABC TV Match of the Day). For more information please contact Brendan Curry or Nicole Hopkinson on 9391 0309.

Q & A with Adam Potter Continued

Q. How have you assessed the opening 6 rounds of the VFL season for both our Seniors and Reserves?

The opening 6 round across the board generally have been very positive. Peter has very clear expectations of the players and they are fully aware of where we need to improve even though we are 5-1 at senior level and 6-0 at the Development level. We want to be the best defensive side in the competition and we are continually challenging the players to get better in this area.

It has been great to see players such as Matt Cravino, Dean Muir and Matt Grossman take the next step and play at senior level this year and our young players that have come into the side have also contributed. The players now have a clear understanding of what is expected from them moving forward, so hopefully after the break we see continued improvement from both sides

Q. What are the biggest challenges you face as a coach on a weekly basis as a Coach in an aligned club?

I think the key to having a successful alignment is having open communication between the clubs. This means that all players and coaches involved have a clear understanding of what is expected of them when they are part of the Williamstown Football Club. Chris Maple has been very supportive in this area and he understands that we have a responsibility to develop players from both clubs when they play in the development squad. Chris attends our match committee and we discuss the roles expected of the young bulldog players, we also then have the players attend our final training session and team meetings. The alignment is a strong alignment in my opinion and Peter, along with all the coaches, ensure that all players from both clubs have a clear understanding of what is expected when they play for Williamstown.

Q. As a teacher at Williamstown High how do you see kid’s perception of VFL football and in particular the Williamstown Football Club?

I think coming to Williamstown this year it has sparked interest from the students and I have seen several students down at the games following Williamstown. I know that allot of the young footballers at Williamstown High look up to both the Western Bulldogs and Williamstown players and talk about hopefully playing for Williamstown in the future.I think this is an area we can continue to improve on. The partnership we can have not only with Williamstown high school students, but all schools in the Hobson’s Bay area needs to become stronger in the near future. I think we can also become more involved with the Williamstown Juniors and other clubs in the area.

I know the club has recently appointed Chris Dixon to the role of Football/Development manager and I look forward to working with Chris to set some clear goals about how we can continue to strengthen our partnership with the young people in our community. Williamstown has a real sense of community and look forward to seeing more kids involved in supporting and following the Williamstown Seagulls in the near future.

Western Jets Wrap

The Western Jets have had a disappointing start to the season having not registered a win in their opening 8 games of the season. While they may not have won a game there has been some encouraging signs. They pushed perennial TAC Cup heavyweight the Murray Bushrangers all the way before going down by 24 points and the same margin was registered in the loss to TAC Cup newcomers Greater Western Sydney. Unfortunately for the Jets it’s little lapses in concentration for a quarter or a half that have cost them games up to this point in the season. With two home games coming up against North Ballarat and Sandringham the Jets will be hoping to change their fortune around and notch their first win of the season.

Also in representative news the Jets have 2 players currently in the Vic Metro U18 squad which is about to participate in the national championships. Congratulations to Dylan Conway (Williamstown Juniors) and Elliott Kavanagh (Williamstown Juniors) on making the squad. The Western Jets also have 11 players named in the initial U16 Vic Metro squad with the final squad to be announced soon. We wish to congratulate all of the Western Jets players representing Vic Metro at the various age levels.

Past Players & Officials Day Vale—Pat Raffle

The Williamstown Football Club was deeply saddened with the recent passing of long time member and supporter Pat Raffle. Although Pat never held an official title within the football club her loyal support over many years will never be forgotten. Pat over the years would cook for the players after training and for many years baked a cake which the ABC commentators would always look forward to devouring. The Raffle name has always been synonymous with the Williamstown Football Club and our Best Club Person Award is named in memory of Pat’s husband Bill “Darkie’ Raffle.

Deepest sympathy to the Raffle family from everybody connected with the Williamstown Football Club.

Reserves Wrap The Williamstown Reserves side under the coaching of Adam Potter have recorded 6 straight victories to begin the 2010 season in promising fashion. Reigning Premiers Box Hill have also won their first 6 games and the clash this Saturday should be an absolute beauty commencing at 11am.

Adam Potter’s coaching staff includes Cory Laforgia (midfield), Shane Murphy (defence) and Darren Caddy (forwards). Todd Clark also plays a pivotal role by overseeing all rotations on match day.

Williamstown victories have all been workmanlike and not the complete blow outs which have occurred at times over recent years. Victories in the first 6 games have been against -

Q & A with David Stretton

David Stretton is now the longest serving senior player on the Williamstown List having joined the Seagulls in 2005 and is now in his sixth season at Burbank Oval. The 23 year old has now played 65 Senior games and along the journey David has played in the Reserves Premiership side in 2005, won the A. Todd Medal for Best and Fairest in the VFL Reserves competition in 2006 and represented the VFL against the SANFL at the Adelaide Oval in 2008.

Q. How quick has the last 6 years gone and did you ever think you would be the longest serving player on the Williamstown list?

Well I think Matty Grossman has that title at the moment. I might slot in under him being the second longest serving player but my time at Williamstown has been really enjoyable. With the usual high turnover of players every year there is always young and enthusiastic players coming into the club which keeps the place exciting and fresh. Burbank Oval feels like home and although a lot of sides dread coming here to play, I love playing at Willi and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Q. What motivates you as a footballer and why do you choose to play VFL football?

The main motivation behind staying at Williamstown and playing VFL has been the desire to play the best standard of football I can and to keep challenging myself to play consistent senior footy. I love the challenge of playing with and against the best players outside of the AFL week in week out.

The one thing that has kept me coming back (the last three years especially) has been the goal to win a senior VFL Premiership and we have been there abouts the last 4 years but haven’t managed to achieve that goal. I have a burning desire to get that flag and it’s the constant motivation.

Q. After 5 years with Brad Gotch as Senior Coach, Peter German has arrived in 2010 as the new coach. How have you found “Germo” and what impact has he had on your football?

Gotchy has had a big influence on my career to date as he was the only senior coach I had played under before this year. Germo has brought a whole new feel to the club this year with a new game plan and different ideas and to go with that a totally new coaching staff has arrived this year too which has added a new dimension.

There is a stronger focus on defence this year which we haven’t been as good as we would have liked over the last few years from a playing point of view. With that and a few other additions to our style of play, hopefully we are in good shape to go that one step further this year.

Q. It is great that you and your partner Rhiannon have recently built a new house in Tarneit, How’s it all going?

It has been a big step in my life building a new home and all that goes with this commitment but I’m really enjoying it now. Being able to share that experience with my partner has been great. Life outside of football can tend to impact on your footy and luckily for me I am really enjoying home/work life at the moment.

Q. As a regular Senior player over the last 4 years you have played in the last 4 final series. Our Senior side have stumbled in September each year so why will this year be different?

It’s hard to give a definitive answer to why we haven’t been able to get to the last week in September because in the last 4 years we have been very successful during the home and away season. I think we have just been lacking that mental toughness and harder edge about our game and when the heat has gone on us in finals we haven’t been able to respond.

I think this year we are slowly taking steps in the right direction to eradicate this problem and I guess the only way we will know for sure is when we are playing finals football. With the playing and coaching staff focus of this year, I think we are in a better space physically and mentally to take on the challenge of playing deep into September.

Q. What advice would you give to first year players when they join Williamstown Football Club?

My advice to guys coming out of the TAC Cup competition is that the transition from under 18’s into VFL senior football is not a natural progression and they need to work hard to get their opportunity and when the do to make the most of it. Williamstown is one of the most professional VFL clubs in the competition along with being fairly successful, so new players need to come into the club with the right attitude and a real want to improve their football and embrace the culture that the Williamston Football Club has and then I’m sure they will be successful and have a good time.

Q. Supporters would notice you changed your jumper number from 27 or 7 this year. Why did you make the change?

No real story behind it, just felt like a change after 5 years and that number became available.

Change is as good as a holiday, so they say !!

Q. Who are some of the new players at the Club in 2010 who have impressed you from both the VFL list and the Western Bulldogs?

That’s a tough one because there are so many new players to the club this year. We have had the biggest turnover of players in my time at the club. There have been some guys who have come into the senior side and had a real impact like Kwame McHarg, Ed Carr, Josh Griffiths, Phil Smith & Tommy German. Also having (Western Bulldogs) listed players like Lukas Markovic who has already played a fair bit of VFL footy with Box Hill filling a key back position has really been a great addition and Andrew Hooper who has been kicking 2 or 3 goals every week out of a forward pocket. There is also a bunch of guys in the 2’s who can easily come in and have an impact at senior level, so I think our depth is pretty strong as we have shown with a handful of regular senior players going down already this year which we have been able to cover to date.
