Update from FSPA HeadquartersHello FSPA Members:
This issue is going to print the week before the conference and it is great to finally see Charlotte 2019 come to life. All the months of planning and getting things set - and now it is almost here. I can’t wait to get this event started!
I was on many phone calls this week regarding our sessions at the conference, as details were confirmed and plans finalized. There are so many varied topics: our Next Gen Committee’s “Growing Pains” roundtable, Clifton Lambreth about his time & lessons learned at Ford Motor Company, the inspiring Dr. Jack Llewellyn talking about “Common Sense Leadership”, and Jim Kahrs, a FSPA favorite, talking about drivers of business value. I listened in on an intriguing discussion by Fred Wheeler, Nick Schuster and Dan Cremins about their “Branch Transformation” roundtable and the what the term Branch Transformation has
come to mean to different people. Mark Smith and the team at ACG have sent me details of their session on Windows 10 Rev-enue Opportunities and the roundtable discussion on Increasing Service Revenue with Windows 10. There is so much great infor-mation to cover, all I can think is “we will run out of time!”
I am so grateful for the people that come to our conference prepared to share and inspire others. Even though they may be sitting in the room with competitors, for four days they become part of the FSPA community. Thank you all.
I hope you are coming to join us and be part of this great group of FSPA members. This is the best association on the planet!
See you soon!
B. J. Hanson Executive Director

It’s a fact. The financial industry has changed significantly over the past 10 years. Community banks and credit unions are not only focused on the competitive environment and customer retention, there is a
new risk paradigm: one that encompasses cyber and physical threats. ATM skimming, identity theft, data breaches, scams, and phishing are all common terms in today’s environment.
It’s critical to have the right tools and staff in place to tackle today’s challenges. Partnering with a leader in banking security solutions helps too!

Business, Technology and Personal TidbitsWell, it is April - and the 15th is coming up. Did you know that 44% of Americans will pay no 2018 Income tax? That is 76.4 million people – up from 72.6 million, or 43.2%, in 2016, before the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was enacted. People owe zero tax because of personal exemptions, the standard deduction, zero-bracket amounts and tax credits. But many still have some money taken from their paychecks to fund Social Security and Medicare.
Look for an easing of a rule on employer recordkeeping of injury and illness from OSHA. The proposed rule would remove the requirement for firms with 250 or more workers to file detailed info via the web. Summaries of work-related injuries or illnesses still must be submitted.
The Obama administration had intended to put the detailed data on OSHA’s website. It’ll be only a partial win for employers, though. The fear has been that unions would use the detailed info in organizing efforts and distort a company’s safety record. Employers are still concerned unions could use the summary data the same way. In a setback for unions, the so-called per-suader rule has been nixed by the Trump administration. The Obama-era rule beefed up reporting requirements for employers that use consultants on unionization matters, calling for disclo-sure even when the consultants had no contact with employees. Before this 2016 rule, reporting had to be done only if the con-sultants had direct contact with employees.
Look for more employers to help younger workers pay off stu-dent loan debts. Almost half of workers under age 35 have such debt, which averages $34,000. Contributing toward paying it down is an attractive benefit for millennial employees and gives employers another way to attract talent at a time when workers are scarce.
A new tax wrinkle makes debt repayment aid more attractive for employers to help with student loans. In a private ruling, the IRS has OK’d one firm’s plan to make tax-deductible payments to a worker’s 401(k) plan in return for the worker making student loan repayments. So, employees are indirectly being helped with debt and the firm gets a tax break.
Talking about 401(k)’s - the feds want to make it easier for work-ers to move small 401(k) accounts when they switch jobs. The Labor Dept. recently approved a program by Retirement Clear-inghouse to automatically transfer 401(k) balances of $5,000 or less of departing employees into individual retirement accounts. When they get new jobs, the balances would then be rolled into their new employers’ plans. For each transfer, a maximum one-time fee of $59 would apply. Workers would be able to opt out. The goal is to reduce retirement plan “leakage”, when workers cash out from an old retirement plan upon leaving a job, not only costing them taxes and penalties but also reducing the amount that they sock away for retirement.
With the American labor pool aging swiftly, employers need to take steps now to adjust so that they can secure the talent they’ll need later, when many of their most-skilled workers call it quits.
The demographic forecasts are sobering. By 2022, 35% of all
workers will be over 50, versus just 25% of the workforce back in 2002. By 2030, 20% of all Americans will be 65 or older…the age usually associated with retirement. Skilled occupations are especially vulnerable to the coming brain drain - financial work-ers, nurses, teachers, utility workers, etc.
Workers are already in short supply now. How can employers adapt as more folks are approaching retirement age and eyeing the exits? Act now. Start by talking to older workers. Ask them when they plan to retire. Also, find out whether they’d like to stay part-time or as contractors, rather than retiring completely. Flexible schedules appeal to many folks who want to cut back gradually. (Just remember that rules on benefit eligibility can get tricky with such arrangements.) Keep in touch with retired employees, who take valuable know-how with them.
More companies are starting retiree networks that give former workers a social bond with their old colleagues and give employ-ers a way to invite experienced folks back in for special projects, training sessions, etc., a known talent pool they can tap into. Tailor your benefits to appeal to an older crowd. Generous retirement plan matching also appeals strongly to those near re-tirement. Such perks can both keep existing workers and attract top-notch older applicants.
Look for opportunities to retrain near-retirees so they can shift into jobs that are less physically demanding or more enjoyable. AT&T, for example, has plans to spend $1 billion on “reskilling” many of its older workers in a bid to keep them on. Have experi-enced workers mentor younger folks to pass on knowledge to the next generation of employees. But note that there are fewer Gen X workers than baby boomers, so older millennials will also be needed to step into new roles. Scout the ranks of young workers for potential talent. Many businesses will need to promote young managers and other skilled people sooner than planned.
One point in employers’ favor: Fewer older workers will want to retire in the coming years compared with previous generations. Many of them are healthier than their parents were at their age and don’t want to slow down yet. Many others are eyeing the steep costs of retirement and figure that working longer is a must.
Some assorted things in April:
Don’t mix driving and eating and texting and all that: April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
If you do decide to go ahead and eat and text and generally be distracted while you are driving, at least consider signing up for organ donation: April is National Donate Life Month – check out www.OrganDonor.gov. And enjoy that jelly donut!
Did you know that on April 22nd, 1914 – Babe Ruth made his professional pitching debut for the then-minor league Baltimore Orioles. Geez. 105 years ago.
Okay - just to make you smile. What do you say to a crying grammar teacher? “There, they’re, their.”
