SHED – Brief Background

Focus :• Underprivileged children and children with disabilities in the nearby area have no access to a decent education.• Children with disabilities do not integrated into mainstream society

• Founded : 2007• Location : Sonapur, Assam• Non-Profit Registered under Society Registration

Act of 1960 with FCRA Clearance. • Founder : Lanu Aimol (Graduate Deg from Osmania Unv on Metal Retardation)

SHED :- Runs a integrated school with boarding facility for the underprivileged children and children with disabilities (Mental Retardation, Autism and Hearing Impaired) - Provides proper education and training to these children to increase self confidence, self worth and help become better and productive citizens.- Facility supports hostellers, full time day scholars and evening day scholars. Children with disabilities interact with evening day scholars that help in integration of these children.

SHED History

• Founded in 2007 by Lanu Aimol (Lanu Aimol has Graduate degree in Metal Retardation from National Institute for Mentally Handicapped, Osmania University).

• 2008 : • Started a day school for differently-abled and underprivileged children in Bhetapara, a suburb of

Guwahati. School was at rented facility.• By 2012 had 23 students.

• 2013 :• Acquired own land in Sonapur (~50km from Guwahati), Fund partially contributed by AFNA (Assam

Foundation of North America), • Relocated school and started residential facilities for students.• Build temporary school structure and limited hostel facility from one time donations from organizations

and individuals in India and abroad.• Started with new students – hostellers, day scholars (mostly disabled) and evening students

• 2014-2015:• ASHA involvement from Nov 2014• Building Pukka classrooms to replace thatched classrooms – Completed June 2015• Building new kitchen cum dining hall – Completed June 2015• Conversion of old multi-purpose + kitchen/dining hall to new hostel facility – Completed June 2015 • Increased Student count to 46 students from 23 students (46 = 13 hostellers + 33 day scholars)

• SHED working with Asha Seattle since 2014.

• Initial funding for : Facilities (one time in Dec 2014 – Rs 14,50,200)

• Satyajit Nath visited SHED on Sept 9th, 2015.• Confirmed the construction of the 5 pukka classroom, new hostel

and conversion of kitchen-cum-dining hall was completed and in good order.

• Interacted with the students, Lanu, other staff, and villagers nearby.

Yubraj Acharya, of 12 year/m, diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

He comes from a poor family background from the Indo- Myanmar-border town called

Moreh, Chandel, district Manipur.

He is showing tremendous improvement in the area of speech & language, physical and

mental development.

He is hosteller and here is happy in watering the tree in the beautiful new campus of

SHED as part of Tree Planting ceremony.
