Dick Slate

On August 1, 2012, the Bay Cities Racing Association family lost a loyal and respected BCRA supporter and friend. Dick Slate was retired from the Interstate Batteries distributorship which he owned and operated in the Bay Area for 25 years. He was also an AVID Raider fan, and long time sponsor of

close friend Floyd Alvis in the green Interstate Battery Special. He loved fishing, hunting, golf and NASCAR, and Dick also enjoyed hosting weekend parties at his Oakdale home, with his favorite Amaretto Coffee. Some may have thought he was a bit tough, but those who really knew him well, knew he was a softy, and had a heart of gold. In his later years, when he was not as mobile, he still made it to most of the BCRA races, and always supported BCRA as a trophy sponsor, golf tournament sponsor, and spokesman. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Suzi, and his children and grandchildren.

Richard A. Haugh Sr. April 18, 1937-August 9, 2012

Richard recently passed away at home, he was 75 years old. Husband of the late Jackie Haugh, Father of Stephanie Garcia (Greg) and Rick Haugh, Grandfather to Nicholas Garcia, Meghan Metcalfe (Christopher) and Travis and Ryley Haugh, and Great Grandfather to Andrew Metcalfe. A long time race car owner and avid golfer, Richard enjoyed all forms of racing and spending time with family members. A long time employee of Western Appliance, he retired in 1992. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and never forgotten for his kind ways. Richard, a long-time member of the Bay Cities Racing Association, was second in the 1984 BCRA Midget owner standings (son Rick driving) and continued as a BCRA/USAC Midget car owner for son Rick during the 80s, claiming dozens of Midget feature wins, heat wins and fast times. Richard also owned a 410 Sprint Car for many years, driven by son Rick and Randy Turner, with several feature wins and Rick claiming the 1987 Silver Dollar Speedway track championship. More recently, Richard was car owner of the #5h Midget, first driven by Rick, and then driven by Rick's eldest son (Richard's Grandson) Travis for the past few years. Travis claimed several ASCS Pacific Region Midget feature wins at Silver Dollar Speedway and also competed in a few BCRA Midget races.

August 14, 2012, Board of Director’s Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the August 14, 2012 Board of Directors Meeting Held at El Senior Frogs in Tracy, CA

The meeting was called to order by President Holbrook at 7:13 pm. In attendance were Board members: Rick Holbrook, Joe Lindsey, Wayne Albright, Bob Roza and Tom Belfiore. Craig Holsted was absent due to work related issues. Business Manager Linda Manning was also present along with guests Stu Donaldson, and Frank Goularte. . The first order of business was a review of the minutes of the July 10, 2012 meeting, followed by a motion to approve them by Wayne Albright and seconded by Joe Lindsey and the motion was unanimously approved. Next, Linda presented the various financial reports through the end of July for review. Treasurer Joe Lindsey reviewed the financial reports and noted that timing of the income versus the timing of checks being sent shows negative numbers in some categories. It was noted that membership is still down from last year and tee shirt sales lagging. It was suggested that BCRA include a $5 discount coupon in next months Newsletter in an effort to increase tee shirt sales. Linda also stated she would contact John Kelly of the MotoRacing News to get a tee shirt ad in the newspaper. Joe then made a motion to approve the financial reports, which was seconded by Lonny Alton and the motion was and promptly approved. The next brought up for discussion was a summary of the Hall of Fame Picnic. Linda thanked all Board members, their families, and many other volunteers for an outstanding day on August 4th at the El Dorado Fairgrounds in Placerville. Preliminary results showed BCRA served 183 folks of which over 80 were Hall of Fame members and their families. Several suggestions were made to speed up the serving including next year , the buffet line will be on both sides of the serving tables. Raffle ticket sales were increased over last year and from responses for various attendees, a great time was had by all. After all bills are paid, the final numbers will definitely show a small profit. So, again Linda thanked all who attended and made the day a special one for all. Finally Joe made a motion to pay the remaining outstanding picnic expenses and allocated a substantial contribution to the BCRA Benevolent Fund. The motion was seconded by Wayne Albright and approved by a voice vote of the Board. Next, under New Business, a discussion regarding the added October 6th race scheduled for 101 laps in two 50 lap segments. The race will be a BCRA points race known as the 1st Annual Johnny Soares Classic with a $8.000 purse with $1500 to win and $250 to start. There will be a fuel stop after 50 laps and if one changes a tire, they will go to the rear of the field, as is the case with any other BCRA race. There will be $100 for Fast Time and $100 for the Hard Charger. A recommendation was made to have a welcoming sheet at sign in regarding the

modified rules of this special race. The rules will be reviewed with Petaluma promoter Rick Faeth and flyers will be available at all BCRA future events. Everyone seemed excited about this special event in hopes it will become an annual big time event. Next, Tom gave a brief report on Vintage activities: The new vintage tee shirts are selling well, and they have an incentive sale going…if you buy the new tee shirts at $15, you can get one of the old style for $5, or both for $20. They had 6 cars at Antioch and their next event is set for Marysville on August 25 followed by their annual event at Roseville. Next, Wayne Albright gave a report on the most recent Midget Lite Summer Series races of July 28 at Antioch with 15 cars; winning was Craig Dillard, 2nd Scott Kinney and 3rd Dakota Albight. Then on August 4th at Placerville with 14 cars won by Scott Kinney over Craig Dillard and Dakota Albight; and Petaluma on August 11 with 12 cars which was won by Dakota Albright over Scott Kinney and Craig Dillard. At the Antioch race, in a special act of sportsmanship, Brian Corso gave up his car to Scott Kinney after Scott had motor problems. Brian knew Scott was the points leader, so Brian showed he is a winner on and off the track by his generous act of loaning his ride to Scott. Wayne also noted two rookies have made it out in recent races, first Roy Moody of Turlock in the rebuilt #20 blue Bailey and Bradley Dillard made his first race at Petaluma with a fine 5th place finish in the yellow 47 car of Larry Lavatiata. Wayne reminded all that the Lites next race is set for September 1st at Oildale with the CLS folks in another North/South shootout. Wayne closed his report by thanking Linda and Ken Hoover for attending the Petaluma race with several dozen of Linda’s world famous cookies, especially when their two cars were non-operative and they could have easily taken the night off. But as loyal Midget Lite supporters, they were in the pits and they distributed cookies which were well received and very much appreciated. The Midget report started with a report on the July 28th race at Antioch where Scott Pierovich won over Britton Bock who drove to his career best 2nd place finish on his 20th birthday. Finishing 3rd was the always fast Shannon McQueen and 4th was Terry Tarditi, Hall of Fame member who was making a return to racing after taking several years off. Then on August 4th, Greg Bragg in the Thurston Spike/Esslinger #11, drove to a convincing win in the Hall of Fame race at Placerville over 14 other contenders. Then on August 11th, in a fast field of 14 cars Greg backed his Placerville win with a win at Petaluma over Pete Davis and Terry Tarditi and Bill Lindsey. The Midgets next race is set for August 25th at Marysville and then the Midgets return to pavement for races at Madera, Lakeport and Ukiah.

August. 25th, we headed out of the Bay Area for Marysville Raceway Park. The weather was good for that area in the 90's with a breeze. We arrive early around 2pm got a good pit for us vintage guys right in front of the entrance to the track in which they were preparing for the race. It was Marysville's, POINTS RACE #18 YUBA CITY SCRAP & STEEL NIGHT-360 PAC SPRINTS, SUPER STOCKS, PRO 4'S, BCRA MIDGETS & BCRA Vintage Midgets. The BCRA Midgets really put on a good 25 lap show Greg Bragg #11 finish first. The BCRA Vintage rode into the sunset, Stu brought he's #7 and his grandson, Michael, "our rookie" drove it. They had what the track called a "Sunset Break," because at 6:30 or 7PM you can't see, going into turn 3. The sun is right into your eyes, so they said, "If we wanted to go out during that time, instead of having a heat, a main exhibition, we could just go out there and run as many laps as we wanted." So we agreed to do that, we just stayed on the track and ran around about 20 laps until we were tired. Had a good time, just playing, so that was it for the night. After our "Sunset Break", we just load up and watch the race. We had 4 cars and 5 drivers in attendance; Michael Donaldson in his grandfather's #7 Benson, Norm & Carol Gray #30 V8-60 Kurtis, Don Strauch #26 Kane Chevy II, Paul & June Ferreira #38 V8-60 T-Rail and John Cordell working Marysville’s Official. Some of us will be going to Calistoga for 2 day Labor Day Weekend, The Louie Vermeil Classic September 1 & 2nd and Roseville All American Vintage Classic September 14 & 15th, hope to see all at both events. Frank Duane Albert October 16, 1942 – July 23, 2012

Frank passed away at home with his wife Barbara by his side after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was the son of Robert and Ida Newman Albert. He was born in Sacramento, CA, raised in Fields Landing, CA, became an Eagle Scout at age 13 and

graduated from Eureka High School in 1960. After High School, Frank began his career of over fifty years as an Auto and Diesel mechanic. In 1967, Frank and his wife, with their two young children, moved to Sacramento. Since 1992, he has been employed in West Sacramento as The Fleet Maintenance Shop Foreman by KGA West/Beneto Tank Lines. Prior to that, he was the Shop Foreman for Peters Truck Lines for seventeen years. Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and good friend to many. He is survived by Barbara, his wife and best friend for 50 years, their son Herk Albert, their daughter Stacey Stark and her husband Rob, granddaughter Jessica Lightle and her husband Nick, granddaughter Mandi Seavers and her husband Jordan, baby great-grandson Eli Lee Lightle, his older brother Jim Albert of Glastonbury, CT and his younger twin sisters Sandra Katri and Sharon DeCarli, both of Ferndale, CA. Family and his job were always Frank’s priorities in life, and throughout all of his years, he was also very involved in all kinds of auto racing, especially Sprint Car racing. During the 1960’s, he was a three-term president of the Humboldt Timing Association at the Samoa Drag Strip in Eureka, CA. He raced his 1954 blue Chevy powered Ford pickup and other hot rods at the drag strip. He also raced stock cars at the Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka. After moving to Sacramento, he liked to go to the NARC races at Calistoga, and he went to almost every Saturday night race at West Capital Raceway. In 1972, he received a trophy for being an outstanding pitman on the sprint car that won the championship that year. For several years, in addition to his full time job, Frank and his wife operated Frank Albert Racing – Track Sales and Service. With the help of their son Herk, on weekends they traveled to races at Calistoga and other tracks throughout Northern California, and sold racecar tires, parts and driver safety equipment. Over the years, Frank was honored to receive many trophies and awards. In 1987, he and Norm Rapp were awarded the Calistoga Northern Auto Racing Club’s Walter T. Ross Award for Outstanding Contributions to Automobile Racing in Northern California. In 2005, The Motor Sports Press

Association honored Frank at their 42nd Annual Awards Dinner and Presentations by presenting him with their prestigious Gordon Martin Award in recognition of his lifelong dedication and contributions to the sport of automobile racing and to racecar drivers for the betterment of motor sports. (Gordon Martin was a journalist and longtime motor sports editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and an enthusiastic fan of auto racing.) In 2009, Frank was inducted into the West Capital Raceway Alumni Associations Hall of Fame. On weekends, you could often find him at the races, racer’s swap meets or car shows. He especially enjoyed going to the Fortuna Autorama and Hot August Nites at Reno. when time allowed. During the past few years, he and his son have continued to help Norm Rapp with his track sales and service at the Saturday night BCRA Midget Races.
