The cold and flu season has arrived. Here are a few guidelines for keeping your student home when they are ill. The state of Minnesota requires students to stay home if they are vomiting, running a temperature, have pink eye, or an unidentified rash. With

vomiting and fevers, students need to be home 24 hours without vomiting or running a temperature before returning to school. With pink eye, a student needs to be on an antibiotic for 24 hours, or they need to have a note from their physician before returning to school. With an unidentified rash, the school will need a note from a physician, or the rash needs to be resolved before they return to school. We also recommend keeping a student home if they feel they are so ill that they will not be able to focus in class. Please call if there are any further questions regarding when a student should be kept home. Thank you for your attention to this.

We are still collecting box tops to support events for our families and community. Please drop off your box tops in the TCA front office. Thank you! PiP https://www.boxtops4education.com/?utm_source=Email_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=BTFE_01_23_2020&vcode=

Viewing and Discussion: Jim Crow of the North, by TPT Jim Crow of the North is a documentary that charts racist policies and practices from the start of restrictive agreements after the turn of the last century to their final elimination in the late 1960s.

Why is this important?

When we examine our shared histories, including racist practices, we deepen our knowledge about how the decisions of earlier generations created the communities we live in today.

Board Members Wanted The Southeast Community Organization is the neighborhood

organization for the community in which TCA resides. Last year, the organization voted to allow for younger board members. We are seeking applicants ages 16+ who might be interested. This is a volunteer opportunity and the board term is 2 years. It may be that a student enters at a time when he/she/they might not be able to serve out that entire time due to college, and that's fine. They welcome any young people, and can provide bus tokens if needed. Further information is in the attached documents. This would be a great resume or application builder for future plans. Thank you, Betsy Mowry Voss [email protected]

Southeast Community Organization Board Member Job Description Part-time Volunteer (appr. 4-6 hours a month)

Youth and Students Welcome, ages 16+

Organization Summary The Southeast Community Organization (formerly the District 1 Community Council) is a 501(c)3 tax-deductible non-profit organization. Our mission is to share knowledge and power, to organize and to advocate with the people who live and work in our neighborhoods. We build leadership to seize opportunities and to work for social and racial justice. The SECO Board is open to students, residents, faith organizations, businesses and employees who are involved in our district. Board members can be age 16 and up. Why should you get involved? We work as the areas neighborhood organization, and we work closely with the City of St Paul and our City Councilmember. This means that we collaborate with our neighbors to work on issues such as racial equity, housing, transportation, youth needs, safety and policing, new businesses, fair use of parks, property use and more. Decisions are always being made about what happens in our neighborhoods; rules are made, decisions are being made about our neighbors; new taxes might go into play and other factors are discussed and decided pertaining to our rights. Your participation means that you can help have a say, and inform others of what is happening.

You have a unique perspective and only you can represent your family, friends and neighbors.

Process You submit an application (online) and are voted in by others in our community. We hold community meetings in March and invite people to come and socialize and vote. Your monthly commitment includes attendance at a monthly meeting (10 per year) and activie volunteerism on a committee or other project. Board members are also welcomed to lead their own project as long as it aligns with our mission. We can provide bus tokens, transportation and/or childcare for meetings upon request. Light snacks/food are provided at meetings. Job Title: Board Member Location: Eastview, Conway, Battle Creek, and Highwood neighborhoods of St. Paul, MN Salary: Unpaid, great for experience and resume building Meetings: Board members are expected to attend board meetings on the 4th Monday evening of each month, and to participate in an additional regular committee and/or other defined volunteerism that supports the well-being of our community. Primary Duties and Responsibilities The board of directors of the SECO is legally responsible for all activities of the organization. The board sets goals, determines organizational policies that guide staff implementation of goals, provides financial oversight and approves and monitors the annual budget. Each member of the board also sits on one of the standing committees of the Council. Training is provided.

Each Board Member has the following six primary areas of responsibility:

1. Policy Administration Set policies, advise on annual plan, and recommend program activities. Approve annual budget and actively participate in financial reporting and oversight.

2. Fundraising: Help the organization raise money by any or all of the following:

Provide personal contribution of any amount, and recruit others donors to do so;

Help set fundraising goals with board and staff;

Assist with the annual fundraising campaign (e.g., providing names of potential donors, request donations from individuals or businesses, assist with preparation, mailing, thank you notes or calls);

Volunteer at the annual Drop-Off Day (recycling day) and other events. Assist in lining-up others who can volunteer. Drop-Off Day brings money in to the organization;

Assist with solicitation of grants in line with strategic goals (e.g., identifying grantors, providing testimonials, identifying partners, assisting with grantwriting and site visits). (Note that board members are not allowed to apply for grants on behalf of SECO without the approval of the Executive Director and/or Executive Committee.)

3. Public and Community Relations

Represent and promote the purposes and activities of the SECO in a positive way to the community.

Participate in planning and staffing community-wide events sponsored by SECO and our partners.

Abide by the organizational policy regarding the use of Board member’s name in conjunction with political candidates.

Promote, whenever possible, new interests in the goals of the organization. Clearly differentiate in public when speaking for the Council and when representing personal opinions. It is a board member’s responsibility to represent and consider the needs of the entire district in decision-making, not just their own interests or agendas.

Attend SECO connected community and events taking place in SECO related to governmental issues whenever possible (activities, programs, meetings that take place in SECO, etc.)

4. Leadership Development

Participate in leadership development opportunities like workshops and trainings.

Participate in recruitment, orientation, and development of new Board Members and encourage volunteers to take on future leadership roles in the organization.

5. Time Commitment

Plan and participate as a volunteer in Council sponsored events and activities (10+ hours per year).

6. Understanding Issues

Develop a basic understanding of issues that come before the board. Ask staff for help or clarification whenever necessary. Ask questions to help deepen and broaden your understanding of issues. Share information with friends, family and neighbors.

Board members should possess or develop the ability to be effective advocates for civic participation within their community, though Board members are not permitted to speak
