Reaching Memphis (Kingdom Growth Principles Training for Making and Multiplying Disciples and Churches) by Zach Medlock Who do I share the gospel with? How do I share the gospel? How do I disciple a new believer? How do I form churches out of these new believers? How do I develop leaders out of the harvest that will multiply? Can I train others in how to do the above? What does God’s word teach us about how to multiply disciples and healthy churches? The Memphis metro area has 1.4 million people and statistics show that around 26% of these people are evangelical Christians. That leaves over a million people that need to have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel. Other statistics show that 60% of people far from God will never enter a church building’s doors. So how do we engage this 60%? How do we take church to them? Do we have a plan? God has shown us in his word every principle we need when it comes to advancing His Kingdom. Jesus is our best model and Paul’s ministry was modeled after his. How do we do the same? Could we see a movement of multiplying disciples and churches like the church did in Acts? In Memphis and around the world, people are being trained in how to engage the harvest, share the gospel, disciple new believers, and forming healthy churches centered around knowing and obeying Christ. Many have come to Christ and are immediately sharing their faith and leading their friends and family to Christ. Churches are being started and leaders developed. But there is still much more work to do. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. If your church, small group, or ministry is interested in being trained in how to advance God’s Kingdom and have people model evangelism and other practices in the harvest, please contact the Mid-South Baptist Association at 901-373-6161 or email [email protected].

HAPPENINGS

Colonial Baptist Church sits on the northern fringe of the Hickory Hill area where most of this year’s focus churches are planted. Dr. James Adams, pastor of Colonial Baptist for the last eight years, saw the opportunity to become one of this year’s focus churches as a chance to find new ways to minister in the changing neighborhood around the church. One of the benefits of participating in the program was that the church was able to have a mission team come in this summer from Pascagoula, MS to serve. The group of students helped plan and carry out a block party and a Backyard Bible Club that helped Colonial identify neighborhood families that they could follow up with and minister to in the future. Colonial Baptist Church began meeting in the early 1950s in a tent on the property down the street where Colonial Middle School sits today. The church was constituted in 1954 and purchased the property where the congregation presently meets that same year. Over the years as the church grew, buildings were added to meet the needs of the expanding congregation. In recent years, the church has experienced a decline in membership as families moved outside the I-240 loop to the suburbs. Bro. James grew up in Memphis and graduated from Central High School. He received his Bachelors degree from Mid-South Bible College (later Crichton College) and earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. After being licensed and ordained at Merton Ave. Baptist Church in the city, he went on to serve as pastor at Woodstock Baptist Church in the Shelby Forest area as well as at churches in Dyer, TN and Carruthersville, MO before returning to Memphis to serve at Colonial. Bro. James and his wife Charline have one daughter and two grandchildren. Colonial Baptist has an active Women on Missions group that is involved with Brinkley Heights as well as several other local ministries. There is currently a group at the church that is beginning to make mats for the homeless out of grocery sacks in conjunction with the Mississippi River Ministry. Besides this Summer’s block party and Backyard Bible Club, church members also reach out to their community by offering a Fall Festival and Community Easter Egg Hunt each year. For the last couple of years, the church has partnered with the Germantown Baptist Church Jazz Band to offer a community Christmas Program. This past year, the Overton High School Band joined them. They also reach the community through an active AWANA program and other events such as a Family Movie Night. Each Monday, the senior adults host a game day where anyone is invited in to play games and fellowship. Bro. James describes Colonial as a loving congregation that loves to worship and is trying to fufill the Great Commission in their community. Pray that the Lord would continue to send families to be ministered to and that would serve with them as they seek to reach their neighborhood for Christ.
