The Lancaster Chamber Women in Business Mentoring ProgramOn Friday, September 27, eight Crusaders went to explore PA College of Health Sciences through the Lancaster Chamber Women in Business Mentoring Program.

The Lancaster Chamber recognizes how important educating the future workforce is to the continued success of the business community and the County’s quality of life. A successful community is one that helps shape future generations.

These workshops are specifically curated to offer guidance, wisdom and encouragement through one-to-one mentorships with students entering their junior year of high school.

Additionally, the program provides students with career awareness and career path guidance as they navigate the opportunities available to them after schooling.

Operation Marine Baby ShowerHaving a family member in the military can be very overwhelming at times. With a life dedicated to protecting one’s country, the journey to find a the feeling of home when moving from base to base around the nation is difficult. And when you add the littlest of babies to the mix, that’s when the longing for home, family, and a support system is irreplaceable.

In 2013, Ryan Smith ‘06, was stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base in San Bernardino County, California. It was there when he and his wife Christine discovered that they were expecting their first child, a little boy whom they would name Connor.

Riley, Ryan Smith’s sister, is currently a senior at Lancaster Catholic and spoke about her sister-in-law’s struggles of motherhood.

“My sister-in-law was very isolated when they lived at the Twentynine Palms Base because she moved from Pennsylvania to be with my brother, so when she found out she was pregnant, she didn’t know anyone there. I remember talking to her and she told me how hard it was.”

It was this conversation that sparked Riley’s interest in helping other Marine families by starting Operation Marine Baby Shower at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps Family Readiness program.

Keeter Kallam, Deployment Readiness Coordinator for Combat Logistics Battalion 7 at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base is thrilled that Riley started this service project.

“I was so grateful to be the middleman for our spouses to receive baby items! Diapers and wipes are always in high demand for our new parents and the other items they sent allowed for us to have a day where we got our unit spouses together and pampered them a little,” said Keeter. “They absolutely loved it!”

Last year, Riley and her mother, Laurie, planned a small shower for the women at the base. But for the Second Annual Operation Marine Baby Shower, Riley wanted to make a bigger impact and invited her friend and classmate Katie Keane and the Lancaster Catholic community to be involved.

Katie has a very unique tie to the Twentynine Palms Marine Base.

“I was born at that base,” laughed Katie. “I lived at the Twentynine Palms base for the first year of my life.”

With her mom in the Navy and Dad in the Marine Corps, Katie moved around a lot as a child having called California, Virginia, Massachusetts and now Pennsylvania her home.

“Having a baby shower for these families makes me feel proud that I am able to be of some aid to the families of those who make brave sacrifices for our country every day,” said Katie. “As I have a desire to serve in the military, it has made me even more passionate about pursuing my dream to be a part of something bigger than myself and to contribute to serving the community.”

Over the summer, Riley and Katie sent the items that were collected to base in Southern California.

“For me, having a baby shower is special because it is amazing to show our appreciation for everything service members and their families do for our country, even if it is something as simple as a baby shower,” said Riley. “It is comforting to know I can help families in the same position my brother was in because I know it is not always easy to be in a place as isolated as the Twentynine Palms Base is.”

The young ladies will kick-off the Third Annual Operation Marine Baby Shower in April with a donation drive for needed baby items including diapers, baby wipes, lotion and onesies. This year, they are planning to incorporate the efforts of Lancaster Catholic’s service clubs, Varsity Club and Youth Club.

“This baby shower, along with my involvement in Varsity Club, has had a great impact on my life by allowing me to recognize how important serving both active duty service members and veterans is to me,” said Riley. “I will continue to find service organizations with this purpose for the rest of my life.”

Ryan is now retired from the Marines and lives in Oberlin, Ohio with his wife and now three children.

Homecoming & Dress CodeDance: Saturday, Oct. 19th 7PM-10:PM

Location: LCHS Berger GymAnyone wishing to bring a guest must have a signed guest form, with copy of guest’s ID.

Guests must be in at least 9th grade, and may not be 21 or older.

Ladies are expected to dress in a manner appropriate for the occasion, and reflective of the modesty expected of Christian women. Specifically listed below are dresses that are NOT acceptable. Ladies are encouraged to contact Mrs. Howe with questions before the dance.

o No exposed tattooso No appearance of exposed flesh (nude or mesh material) in inappropriate areaso No plunging backs, necklines, or overexposed backso Length of dress must meet the fingertipso No excessive cleavageo No bare mid-drifts (no two-piece dresses)

Men are expected to dress in a manner appropriate for the occasion. Expectations are listed below:

What will happen if students come to the dance in violation of any of the above?

Depending on which of the above is in violation, if it can be fixed, (taking out earrings, for example) it will be done. If a student’s attire is not appropriate (overly-exposed back, inappropriate length, etc.) the student will be given a garment to wear over their clothing. If they choose not to accept the garment, the student will be asked to leave.

For those students who drive to the dance, an attempt will be made to contact a parent to make them aware the student was asked to leave.

For those students who do not drive to the dance, he/she will be required to put on the garment and wear it for the remainder of the dance, or until a parent is able to pick them up/correct the dress code violation.

Important News: Taking a Sick Student HomeAlthough we live in a world where most students have a cell phone with them, it is vital that when they are not feeling well that they go to the school nurse.

We have discovered a trend where students are texting their parents when they are feeling under the weather and the parent just showing up to come pick them up.

If your child is not feeling well, please advise them to visit the school nurse! We do not wish for a medical emergency to happen in a classroom or hallways or not knowing that your child was not feeling well, prior to a parent picking the student up.

School Counseling CornerAttention All Sophomores! - CTC tours will be held at the end of October from 8:30-11 a.m. This tour will take place at the Brownstown Campus and LCHS will provide transportation. If you are interested in any of the half day programs for junior year, it’s essential to take a tour. See Mrs. Taormina for more information.

Crusadership for Freshmen - The School Counselors and Friends were in Crusader periods this week and instructed students on how to access their Naviance Accounts. Additionally, a Learning Styles Inventory was completed. The results included optimal study environments, if your student is an auditory, visual or kinesthetic learner and what those all mean, and much more. Understanding how your student learns is essential to their success. To find out more about this assessment, ask your child to show you their results on their Naviance account under the Assessments tab.

So now that I’m registered for the PSAT, how do I prepare for the test? For 10th grade students, little preparation is necessary as this test will be a baseline for skills, abilities and benchmarks. 11th grade students who have taken the PSAT last year, were issued a code for access to tailor-made preparation through Kahn Academy. Don’t know your code?Ask your School Counselor.

On testing day, we are asking that all students arrive at school on time. We will begin testing as soon after the bell rings at 8:00 a.m. We are using homerooms on the second floor of the building due to the freshman retreat activities on the lower level and gym. Students are asked to bring several sharpened number 2 pencils -- please no mechanical pencils, a calculator with fresh batteries and a positive attitude. Students will have 2 breaks during testing however, they are only 5 minutes long so snacks won’t be necessary.

Each classroom will operate independently however unless otherwise notified, most student will be dismissed between 11:45a.m. and 12:00 noon. Parents may pick up their children or they can take their regular bus home at 3:00 p.m. No lunch will be served on testing day so if students are staying all day, they are encouraged to pack a lunch.

PSAT Late Registration Now Available - 2 letters were sent out electronically to all parents and students in 10th and 11th grade regarding the new registration procedures for PSAT. Military Appreciation Night Recap

Foundation Gives to Catholic Education Families whose children attend Resurrection Catholic School call it a “blessing,” and they have “three generations of people who came before” who handed down the possibility to them.

“We don’t ever feel different here,” Kassandra Settle told Gerald Ganse, president of the Catholic Education Foundation which provides tuition assistance. “For my girls to come here is beyond a blessing.”

Retired pharmacist Gerald Ganse formed the foundation five years ago as an independent nonprofit. He visited Resurrection Oct. 1 to meet families awarded $7,211 in CEF grants, specifically from the Dr. Albert J. and Mrs. Ave Marie (Butz) Schreder and Family fund.

“Dr. Al always believed in Catholic education and he wanted to give back to others. He and his family established a fund to help families come to Resurrection. There are three generations of people who came before who wanted to pass it forward,” Ganse explained. “My husband and I work hard to pay (tuition). I feel so privileged to have this help,” Yaneth Rubio said.

She said her children are naturally kind to others they meet, even strangers in a grocery store. “That comes from here,” Rubio said.

The Catholic Education Foundation is another way for Catholics to give, Ganse said, in a way that advances the vision and mission for Catholic education in Lancaster County.

Crusader Stadium prior to the varsity football game versus Annville-Cleona.

Resurrection Catholic School’s Service Club celebrated the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, patron of first responders, with a prayer service for local officials to thank them for their protection.

The Sept. 30 assembly fell one week prior to Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, so Lancaster City Fire Chief Scott Little and Lt. Andre Kelley visited classrooms to pass along fire safety messages.

The Archangel Michael is considered the protector of the people, like those who serve as firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

“(They) make the world a safer place for all of us,” said seventh grade student Lain Weitzel.

Scott and Kelley brought coloring books for elementary students and quizzed them on their fire safety knowledge. A 19-year member of the fire department, Kelley made sure students know what a smoke alarm sounds like and how to get out of their house when they hear it.
