This month’s highlights of two members…

Dale Guilford, AWA member, has a feature article in “Woodturning Magazine”. This magazine is out of the UK and is one of the most renowned woodturning magazines in the world. The article talks about Dale’s life in woodworking and his love of turning. Woodturning magazine is available by hardcopy subscription or online subscription. The online (digital) subscription is very reasonable, this month’s issue has over 100 pages all about woodturning! Woodturning Magazine allowed a reprint for us – the article is at the end of the newsletter.

Greg’s biggest challenge came in 2001 and continues each year. He was commissioned to do the base for the 2002 PGA Tour’s FBR Open Trophy (now called the Waste Management Phoenix Open). The wood base starts as a Mesquite blank about 15” x 7” and 42 pounds. The base with a hollowed-out donut hole ends up around 4 pounds! Once completed and challenges accomplished, the base is shipped to Ireland in November where it is inspected and Waterford Crystal completes the top half of the trophy for the Jan/Feb tournament in Phoenix. Think of Greg when that trophy is lifted!

AWA Supplier Discount Program

Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop consists of four retail stores in North Carolina, an online catalog and mail order catalog. We offer over 13,000 products for woodworking, metalworking, woodturning, woodcarving and much more. Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop specializes in woodworking abrasives, machines, tools as well as hard to find abrasives. In the 1980s our sister company, Klingspor Abrasives US, had cut-off material from manufacturing that was being placed in our local landfill as waste. Being environmentally conscious, they decided to take what would be waste and repurpose it. Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop was established in 1989. With a single-page ad in a woodworking magazine, we offered “The Bargain Box” which is 20lbs of industrial rolls/cut-offs/belt abrasive materials. This box would have been waste from manufacturing is now repurposed into abrasives anyone can use! From this ad, we have built a reputation of high quality, industrial-grade abrasives at low prices.

KLINGSPOR's Woodworking Shop has become a popular stop for woodworkers around the country. We're so happy to see fellow craftsmen passing by and remembering our stores are only short jaunts off of major interstates. And, as usual, we're showered with compliments. Nowhere else will you find such a huge selection of products to enhance your woodworking. That's why KLINGSPOR's Woodworking Shop has been called "A Woodworker's Dream Store." With showrooms filled with everything from heavy machinery all the way down to a simple bottle of glue, you'll see we've left no stone unturned. So, if you're ever in the area of one of our stores, passing through on business or vacation or just feel like driving to Asheville, NC; Cary, NC; Hickory, NC; or Winston-Salem, NC; come by and see what all the hoopla is about.

Arizona Woodturners Association presents

John has always lived near the ocean, and was inspired to bring the motion and rhythm of the waves to a round object. The exploration of that concept led to the “wavy” design which is still the core element of his work today. He started by placing the design on bowls, because that’s kind of the obvious thing to make on a lathe, but as he developed new techniques John found that he could remove the restriction of the vessel and let the design stand alone as a sculptural form. By working with round forms, he found an opportunity to create designs that have no beginning or end. Even as they sit still, you can imagine the design wrapping around the piece and coming back into view, giving rhythm to the design. By moving the shapes around on the piece John found the energy that hopefully gives a feeling of movement to an otherwise static form. http://www.johnbeaver.net

Like most turners I find the bandsaw to be a great addition to the shop. I have a tendency to push it to its max by cutting logs I can just about lift to the table. To have continued performance with straight cuts and curved cuts that do not bind, keeping the bandsaw adjusted is a must. This video offers the best how-to solutions. Solution for A Dusty Face Shield

Try using Armorall type spray on your face shield or it's cover, you don't have to worry about dust or static cling. After applying the spray (follow manufacture directions) the shield becomes so slick that

dust slides right off. Try it, it works great.

Woodburning Here is a link from the FishCarver.com website to make your own woodburning pens.

Wood Burning Techniques from ThePyrographyTool.com

Here are a few pointers to make your artwork look more professional.

• Many beginners make the mistake of pressing too hard with the pyrography tool onto the surface. Using light strokes makes it easier to guide the pen. You must work from light to dark building up the layers of color.

• Gradually build up to the dark areas – it is easy to make areas darker but almost impossible to lighten it. Remember that the longer you hold the pen in one place – the darker and deeper the burn will be.

• When burning it is best to go with the grain. Position the art so that you will be following the grain when drawing the pen towards you. This is the motion you should always use, pulling the pen

toward you when burning.

• Going against the grain will offer up resistance on the nib.

• Depending on the style of your design, start burning the outlines of your design first. You may repeat this process to make them darker and clearer according to your desired effect.

• If you make a minor mistake you can use the sandpaper to sand it out. This does not always work however; it depends on how dark you have burned the wood you want to correct.

• While you are working, take time to clean your tips. A carbon builds up may affect the heat setting and ease of use of your pen.

• Either run your nib over a sanding block while it is still hot and in use to remove any carbon or, alternatively, when your pen is cool, remove the tips with pliers and use aluminum oxide on

them.

SAFETY Tip – Work in a well-ventilated room. Smoke and the smell of burning wood

can become irritating. Use a fan to disperse the resultant side effects or use an exhaust fan with a carbon filter to remove the smoke.

About Lie-Nielsen Toolworks

Lie-Nielsen Toolworks makes heirloom quality, woodworking hand tools in Warren, Maine, and takes pride in providing exceptional support to their customers. Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Events travel to cities around the country to promote woodworking education in the use of hand tools. Lie-Nielsen also offers weekend workshops, instructional videos, and encourages visitors to tour their showroom and shop in Maine.

For more information about this event, please visit www.lie-nielsen.com/hand-tool-events or contact Jared Patch at (800) 327-2520 [email protected]

“We started these events to expose more woodworkers to the improvements in quality, environment, and enjoyment that handtool work can offer,” says Lie-Nielsen founder and president Thomas Lie-Nielsen, “and over the past decade we’ve seen their popularity explode with new and experienced woodworkers alike. Incorporating traditional tools and methods can offer even die-hard machinery users ways to bring their work to the next level. The fact that our tools don’t require earplugs or respirators just adds to the appeal.”

Lie-Nielsen staff will help demystify the world of hand tool woodworking and cover topics like sharpening, tool setup and use, and joinery. Visitors are encouraged to get hands on and ask questions.

Lie-Nielsen also invites guest demonstrators to showcase their work at these events. Guests include independent toolmakers, woodworkers, and educators who share their values for quality craftsmanship. The guests for this event will be posted on www.lie-nielsen.com/hand-tool-events

FEATURE — DALE GUILFORD

Ticking the boxes for a fulfilling retirementMy woodturning journey has been driven by an interest in wood, tools, techniques and community. Throughout my childhood I was always around wood and tools in my father’s shop. Seventh-grade shop class is where I created my first turning, which was a lamp turned from a bowling pin blank. I am always surprised to learn how many woodturners had a similar beginning.Later, when I started my own family,

having a workshop was always a priority. Woodturning was never the primary activity for me, it was only to support my furniture-making with spindles for tables and chairs. It wasn’t until years later, when I was nearing retirement, that woodturning became a primary focus. Woodturning now satisfies many of my needs for a comfortable retirement, including keeping busy, being creative, working with wood, shopping for tools, making things for family and friends, and researching methods and techniques.

AFTER RETIREMENTDuring my first year of retirement I began to turn on a regular basis and then I took a detour. I started a small online business, AzCarbide, providing a selection of carbide inserts to woodturners. This detour satisfied more of my needs – connecting with woodturners, creating new products, selling online, and making money. It was like I came out of retirement. Or, as they say, I found a way to monetise my hobby. However, as the business activity increased, I had less time for woodturning, which is my real passion. So, after six years I decided to sell

my business to a fellow woodturner in Michigan, Ron Campbell. I was pleased my business was going to someone who would grow it, and who is a leader in the woodturning community. I do miss the daily discussions with

woodturners, learning about their

latest projects and sharing with them my experiences and ideas. After turning many bowls it was time to

find new challenges by learning different techniques to improve my skills. Over the past few years I have tried turning many objects, including pepper mills, kaleidoscopes, boxes, platters, basket weave illusions, bottle stoppers, and segmented bowls. I am always searching for new things to make. Currently I am perfecting my ‘pottery

illusion’ technique after viewing Native American pottery and baskets at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, US. Other ideas come from the turnings that fellow club members bring to the club meetings. Viewing these gives me ideas for my next project and the required techniques I need to learn. I am fortunate to live in an area with

three active AAW chapters and many excellent woodturners, all willing to share their knowledge and expertise.

Recent challengeI started adding piercing and carving to some of my work. Certainly bringing out the natural colour, figure, and shape is always my goal for all my turnings. However, now I find adding piercing or carvings can provide an interesting aspect. So far these techniques have been the most challenging steps I have taken in woodturning, but I am enjoying the results and working with new tools.Gifting my turnings gives me the

greatest pleasure, somewhat of a way to leave my mark. I also frequently reach out to neighbours with a gift of a small bowl, box or pepper mill, sometimes made from their own tree. Needless to say, my neighbourhood boundaries continue to expand. I have sold very few items as commission work does not excite me. The environment of no commitments and schedules is ideal for my work style.Of all the parts of wood

turning, community is the most important to me. The best thing I ever did to expand my awareness and advance my skills as a woodturner was to join a woodturning club. The second best thing was volunteering to participate in demos at local expos. Not only does it promote woodturning and club membership, but also I am able to strengthen and create new relationships working beside fellow club members. I have found that the opportunities to volunteer and support a club and promote woodturning are limitless.

Always searchingAnother part of woodturning that adds enjoyment is having an abundant supply of turning blanks. There’s something about the hunt and discovery of usually free wood. I like to try different species for their unique characteristics of colour, density and figure. Living in the desert south west many think we have a limited supply of wood. Quite the contrary – we actually have more than 20 species available, many that have been imported for landscaping. On every vacation trip to parts of the US

I am always looking for turning blanks to add to my inventory. Each piece I turn has a story about the wood and how I acquired it. Some of my previous customers and I started a wood exchange, trading turning blanks from the states of Iowa, Minnesota, California, Washington and Victoria, Canada.

As I demo at our local county and state expos, I experience the interest in woodturning first hand. I am always intrigued by the attention paid to it and the curiosity, especially from the younger generation. Unfortunately, many schools have

discontinued their hands-on industrial arts programmes and this puts more responsibility on turning clubs and organisations, as well as the opportunity to fill this void by promoting woodturning. I feel so fortunate to have found woodturning as my passion for it continues to grow.

DALE’S TOP TECHNIQUE: INDEX JIG

Many of my turning designs require indexing, sometimes over 100 segments. I decided to make my own index wheels using polar graph paper. This allows unlimited options with more details and control. I use a software programme from Blackcat Systems (www.blackcatsystems.com/software/graph_paper_maker.html) to produce a grid with the number of segments required. This programme allows the user to create custom graph paper with any number of segments needed. I print the graph paper and glue it to a 6mm-thick piece of hardboard and drill a hole to match my spindle. Next, I clamp a thin piece of aluminium to the lathe bed that allows the spindle to turn freely until clamped at the appropriate segment. As a guide for my

pencil block I mounted a piece of 18mm-thick plywood to the top of a tool post and over that added a plywood tiltable jig that can be moved to any desired angle ready for scribing. The block holding the pencil can be easily manoeuvred to

scribe a line at any angle or contour you may have turned. The jig can be modified to your preference but the key component is the simple index wheel made from the printed polar graph paper and hardboard. There are a number of indexing tools available, but for total control I have found this indexing jig I use works the best for me. I have a number of wheels pre-made with different numbers of segments to help with the various designs I wish and like to make.
