Does your child use one? Do you know where the disposable cups go once you’ve finished using them? Straight to the landfill that’s where. Just recently the media leaders teamed up with a group of years 3 and 4s from Rangi to work on an inquiry about introducing keep cups at our school. We believe that everyone should use keep cups and if we all do this, we’d all be being changemakers in our own small way. Our resident barista, Barb, estimates that she uses about 130 cups per week at the coffee shop. The disposable cups are about 35 cents each. This means she is spending about $50 a week on disposable coffee cups. This is crazy on so many levels!! We would like to ask families to donate $5 on Kindo to buy a keep cup. For every cup bought, the school will buy one too. That’s a win-win! The cups that we have picked are made of bamboo, and are long lasting. This means Barb won’t be throwing out cups every day. The school will also be saving money, and we will be saving our world from more pollution. We created an imovie to tell people about our idea, and where to donate, please watch it. The cups will be kept at school, washed and returned to the coffee shop every day. Our slogan is: “Buy me once, keep me forever.” We hope that you can be a changemaker and donate a keep cup. Keep Cup Campaign

Last term, as part of the 'taking action' phase of Tui’s Kiwi inquiry, Tui planned and planted a number of Treasure Hunts for Year 0 - 2 children to have fun with.

The children were asked to bring a gold coin donation which we were able to lay as a coin trail. In total we raised $172 for the Kiwis for Kiwi organisation based in Arthurs Pass.

Do you use a keep cup? Does your child use one? Do you know where the disposable cups go once you’ve finished using them? Straight to the landfill that’s where.

From the Principal

It’s been a busy day at Paparoa Street today with daytime discos, movie fundraisers, bake sales and all in our Pyjamas. Nothing like a day of fun and excitement to keep us all engaged at the end of the year.

Don’t you also love the fabulous photos from our children’s participation at the Tough Kids event at Rawhiti domain yesterday (see later on in the newsletter, under the Sports Notices) - special thanks to Dan Brooks and Alison Field for their organisation and Lynne Heyward, Kate Patchett and Sonya Nuku for supervision and team support. The kids really did have a blast.

With only 4 and ½ weeks until the term and the year ends the next few newsletters will be an ongoing record of things you need to know for 2021.

We know you like to be informed well ahead of time so some of these pages will be things for the fridge again. We will run everything twice to help you with retaining the information and you can always access the newsletter again on the website.

Term Dates 2021

Bring your own device 2021You will be aware that we operate a bring your own device programme for Year 3-6 students at Paparoa Street. This is an optional programme where children can bring along an ipad, tablet or chromebook / laptop they have at home in order to allow improved access to learning at school.

Children at these year levels will be regularly accessing work through Google classroom as well as using devices for creative endeavour within their learning programme.

Since our Covid lockdown in March/April 2020 we have increased our capacity to deliver a blended model of learning that includes online work alongside regular book based learning activity. Our children are able to share work with you on a daily basis using their device through Seesaw. We know students' ability to access a device for home learning during lock down was crucial and while we hope we are past these times there is still the opportunity for teaching to occur on line when children are absent from school.

With this in mind you may be considering device options for your child for the new year.

Our preference is for ipads or chromebooks as these offer the children the most flexibility for their learning. Due to shipping issues at the moment it is possible there will be delays in delivery.

The link below provides you with some good information for consideration when you are purchasing devices for student use. We do not have a preferred supplier and I reiterate that BYOD is optional at our school. BYOD Options

FundraisingA huge thank you for your support with our Karamata fundraisers today - there was quite a bit of sugar consumed as well as plenty of energy burned at the lunchtime disco. Our children were happy wee campers as they skipped in the gate in their pyjamas today too. It added a bit of colour to our day in general. We will keep you posted on the fundraising success when details come to light.

NEXT FRIDAY - BACKWARDS MUFTI DAY - what is it you can wear back to front and still be comfortable?? Bring a gold coin!

Change Makers At the beginning of this newsletter, one of our change maker projects is highlighted. We would really love to see a number of these projects the children have been working on this year come to fruition and be part of our school culture. What can you do to support the Keep Cup Campaign and to ensure our children know they can make a difference. Buy a Keep Cup on Kindo now!

PTA Events A huge thanks to all the PTA supporters who have run our series of Mini Events this term, most recently the school disco and games night were a hit! Special thanks to Michelle Manchester and Andy Pender along with teachers who organised these events. Next is the Christmas Fair on Friday 4 December.

Caught Reading Caught Reading had a visit from Chris Cowan, from Scholastic Books, this week. He has been incredibly generous with the book donations made throughout the year and the children wanted to thank him. Chris has enabled us to donate dozens of books to the Paparoa Street School community. It was a real privilege to have Chris, and his dog Floyd, at our last meeting for the year. Floyd is a registered carer-dog and an avid reader! To show our gratitude, we gave Chris a cactus and Floyd a bowl. Thank you to the teachers who have been working on this initiative throughout the year. We love it!

More information for 2021 will be delivered in next week’s newsletter.

See you all soon.
