LITTLE FREE LIBRARY The stewards of the Little Free Library hosted two community events in May -- our annual preschool field trip and the Rambler Garden Club plant sale. Karen Butke, Karen Miller, Hester Haick, and Eddie & Judy Riddle welcomed the children who enjoyed a snack and story then traded books. The Rambler Garden Club sold approximately $1,300 of plants and will make a donation to Springdale's youth group and Botanica. LFL stewards Hester Haick, Debbie Bunger, Jane Jones, and Donna Sheffer of-fered customers free gardening books and maga-zines. The youth served refreshments and helped carry plants to cars. Springdale members donated plants for the sale. Garden Club members expressed their appreciation to Springdale for its hospitality. The 2018 Mother's Day Plant Sale will be on Satur-day, May 12, from 9 AM to noon. The Little Free Library recently gave surplus books to the Family Scholar House. One of our little free library doors needs to be replaced. Call Diane Kirkpatrick at 493-6270 if you have the skills and tools to build one. Thanks.

nourished in the faith Learn one new thing about the environment this summer

Creation Care Summer Reading List Read a book or two this summer that will renew your appreciation for the intricacies of nature and/or explore the issues of climate change. Getting informed is our first step towards action. Inhabiting Eden: Christians, the Bible, and the Ecological Crisis Patricia K. Tull (2013) This is the book that the Creation Care Team read as a small group study and later met with its author to hear how congregations are acting on behalf of creation. Tull, professor emerita of Old Testament at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, lives in Jeffersonville, IN and blogs about environmentalism at workingpreacher.org.

Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet Michael Bloomberg and Carl Pope (2017) Bloomberg, former mayor of New York, and Pope, a lifelong environmental leader, approach climate change from different perspectives, yet they arrive at similar conclusions. Without agreeing on every point, they share a belief that cities, businesses, and citizens can lead – and win – the battle against climate change.

Lost Mountain: A Year in the Vanishing Wilderness: Radical Strip Mining and the Devastation of Appalachia Erik Reece (2006) A groundbreaking work of literary nonfiction that exposes how radical strip mining is destroying one of America's most precious natural resources and the communities that depend on it. A native Kentuckian and son of a coal worker, Reece makes it clear that this is neither a concern nor a radical contention, but a mainstream crisis.

Distant Neighbors: The Selected Letters of Wendell Berry and Gary Snyder Edited by Chad Wriglesworth (2015) “As poets and essayists…both writers have advocated a stance of gratitude toward the world, a way of seeing it as a gift.” —Commonweal

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life Barbara Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp, Camille Kingsolver, Richard A. Houser (Illustrator) (2007) Chronicle of a family’s struggles and triumphs as they rooted themselves to their Appalachian farm and adopted a locally-produced diet. In its 10th anniversary, newly released edition, the family contributes new chapters that take stock of the last decade.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals Michael Pollan (2007) Pollan’s revolutionary examination changed the way Americans think about food and agriculture, and the profound effects that even the simplest everyday food choices have on ourselves and the natural world.

The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate— Discoveries From a Secret World Peter Wohlleben, trans. from the German by Jane Billinghurst (2016) Wohlleben, who manages a beech forest in Germany, has gathered research from scientists examining how trees communicate and interact with one another.

Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants Robin Wall Kimmerer (2013) As a botanist, Kimmerer asks questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers.

Silent Spring Rachel Carson (1962) The classic that launched the environmental movement. More than 50 years ago, Carson warned against the overuse of synthetic pesticides, arguing that they not only killed bugs but also made their way up the food chain to threaten bird and fish populations and could eventually sicken children. Her clarion call ignited the public to question the government about what it allowed others to put into the environment.

Simply Give to Eastern Area Community Ministries

The hallmark of the Meijer hunger relief efforts is its Simply Give program, which has helped neighborhood food pantries keep their shelves stocked since November 2008. This signature program has generated more than $26 million, thanks to the continued generosity and support of Meijer customers, team members and food pantry partners who are committed to helping feed hungry families. How to Give During this Simply Give campaign (May 14 through June 28) at the Springhurst Meijer, customers are encouraged to purchase a $10 Simply Give donation card upon checkout. Once purchased, the donation is converted into a Meijer Food-Only* Gift Card and donated directly to Eastern Area Community Ministries.

Where Your Donation Goes Your $10 donation helps a neighbor make ends meet. Instead of determining what food to donate to EACM, the Simply Give program allows EACM the flexibility to choose the grocery items best suited for the families they serve in our community. And, *this includes baby food, formula, diapers and wipes.

PENTECOST OFFERING “For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all.” —Acts 2:39 Each year on Pentecost Sunday we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. Acts 2 tells the story of the Holy Spirit descending on the disciples as tongues of fire, and casts them from their place of contemplation and fear, out into the streets, preaching in languages they couldn’t understand for the benefit of all the people gathered there. They told the story of Jesus and taught the people what it meant. This was the beginning of faith formation, meant

to inspire and encourage all who gathered into a lifetime of faith. Then as today, the Holy Spirit empowers anyone who will receive to change their lives, to radically share, to gather across lines of difference, to join in communities of compassion and care. On Sunday, June 4, when we gather, we will receive the Pentecost Offering. Gifts to the Pentecost Offering celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and support our congregation’s efforts of faith formation in the first third of life, from childhood through young adulthood. Our congregation will retain 40 percent to be used for ministry with youth in our congregation. The remaining 60 will be sent to the Presbyterian Mission Agency to support national initiatives of our denomination focused on helping children, youth, and young adults develop their life of faith through supportive communities, caring mentors, and faith-related nurture and service. The Pentecost Offering makes a difference for the life of the whole church and for congregations like ours.
