When: Sept. 9, 2012 — 2:12 a.m. Where: Innovation Village Apartments (IVA), seventh floor

A student was arrested for setting off the fire alarm by discharging the fire extinguisher and causing resident students to evacuate the building.

The resident assistant (RA) told FAU police and the Boca Raton Fire Department that an unidentified male pulled the fire extinguisher in IVA.

Police used surveillance cameras to find four males entering the apartments and taking the elevator to the seventh floor, all just minutes before the alarm was set. One male hosed the hallway with the fire extinguisher. They all fled the scene after.

The student told police that he and his friends were going to a party on the seventh floor, but when they got there, it was cancelled. As they were leaving, one of his friends set off the fire alarm. After interviewing others at the scene, police identified the student who pulled the extinguisher.

That student told police in his statement that, “He had a drink last night, and all he could remember is waking up and someone informing him that he had hosed the hallway of Innovation Village North with a fire extinguisher.” According to the reports, he “further stated that he is deeply sorry for all of the trouble that he caused.”

The student was arrested and charged with preventing or obstructing the extinguishment of a fire.

When: Sept. 12, 2012 — 3:17 p.m.Where: FAU Lot 4, near the College of Biomedical Science Building

A student was hit in the knees by a gray BMW that was pulling into a parking spot in Lot 4.

According to reports, the victim informed the driver she was holding the space for her friends, however, the driver’s boyfriend started cursing and yelling at her to get out of the space. The driver continued to pull into the parking space anyway.

The student placed her hands on the driver’s BMW while she continued to drive into the student’s knees. There was minimal damage because the victim moved out of the way once the car made contact with her body. The driver claimed that she did not hit the victim, however, the victim had dirt smudges and red marks across both knee caps and more red marks just below the knee caps.

The student gave police the BMW’s Florida license plate tag.

When: Sept. 14, 2012 — 5:00 p.m.Where: Student Union

A Boca Raton High School/FAU dual enrolled student reported her iPhone stolen and used the

application “Track My Phone” to find it. The student told police she was at Coyote Jack’s

around 2:30 p.m. A half hour later her phone was missing.

When she used the “Track My Phone” app, she was able to see her iPhone headed northbound on the Tri-Rail.

Police used surveillance cameras to see a male at the register of Coyote Jack’s take the phone and put it in his pocket.

The student made contact with the person who had her phone. According to reports, the person who had her phone was a friend of the male at the register who took it.

Also, according to reports, “She did not want police to stand by while she waited to receive the cell phone, and she did not want to file charges against this individual.”

Around 11:00 p.m., the student, her mom and the person who had her phone made a deal to meet at a barber shop in Delray Beach. The student and her mother decided it was unsafe and called Delray police. The male, according to reports, was sitting inside the shop when police picked up the phone.

Delray police were finally able to return the phone to its rightful owner.

When: Sept. 16, 2012 — 2:39 am.Where: Heritage Park Towers (HPT) North

A resident assistant (RA) called police after an argument between a couple left them covered in blood in HPT.

Earlier that day, the couple went to the beach and on the way back they discussed their relationship, according to the report. The boyfriend thought she was breaking up with him, became very upset, and repeatedly hit his head against the dashboard of the vehicle.

When they arrived at HPT, the argument continued.

According to the report, “He [said he] couldn’t live without [her], and then he decided to smash his head against the metal framed bed resulting in a small gash on his forehead, which produced a significant amount of bleeding. He also punched the bed frame numerous times, resulting in swollen knuckles on his right hand.”

The female told police she was afraid he was going to harm himself because he had made several suicidal statements in the past.

When police talked to him, he admitted saying he was going to kill himself several times during the argument, as well as in the past.

He was transported to South County Mental Health and was Baker Acted, meaning he was found to be a danger to himself and had to be monitored 72 hours.

Daniel Copher was halfway through

lecturing his history and appreciation

of music night class last fall when a

student collapsed to the floor and

started convulsing.

The Barry Kaye Hall filled with gasps, whispers

and panicked looks as Copher rushed to the back of

the lecture hall to find Lauryn Hogg, a sophomore

social work major, lying on the ground, shaking.

Copher then reached into his pocket to grab his

cellphone. He took one anxious look at it and

looked back up to his students — no service.

Copher left the room with a frantic look on

his face as another layer of anxiety appeared. He

needed to make a call, desperately, and his phone

didn’t have any signal.

“I had to leave [Lauryn] in the care of other

students to walk outside the building,” Copher said.

Minutes later, he returned to the class after

exiting the building to make the emergency call.

“I tried to text my mom during the class to let

her know something wasn't right, and I felt weird

but couldn’t get service,” Lauryn Hogg said. “And I

didn’t feel well enough to get up and leave the class

to try and get service.”

Michael Diaz, a junior psychology major, was in

Copher’s class when the incident happened.

“It would be much more comforting knowing

immediate cellphone action could have taken place

if a medical emergency were to ever happen to me,”

Diaz said.

Weak cellphone reception is the result of a

number of factors, including proximity to network

towers and the raw materials of a building. Thick

walls, weather and even high cellphone traffic are

just a few causes of weak cellphone service on

campus.

According to Jason Ball, associate vice president

of the Office of Information Technology (OIT),

which oversees FAU’s telecommunications, energy

efficient materials had to be included in the buildings

on campus in order to meet building codes.

“The problem of cellphone reception in newer

construction is a problem nationwide,” Ball said.

“Construction materials that meet environmental

and hurricane structural requirements are the main

contributors to this problem.”

The silver used in glass windows for energy

efficiency, such as the windows in Innovation Village

Apartments (IVA), interferes with radio signals and

causes weak reception.

“I had to walk out of class. Got a call from my

sister saying mom’s in the emergency room. So

maybe, if I was in IVA, I wouldn’t have gotten the

call,” Christopher Andreassi, a senior management

information systems major, said.

Gary Stern, owner of Tech U, FAU’s on-campus

technology store, hears complaints from students

about cellphone reception on a daily basis.

“We know for a fact that [students] are having a

problem with signal, because they come to us saying

that all the time,” Stern said. “We found out that

some of the services works around campus, except

there’s places all around that certain networks don’t

get reception.”

Other areas on campus that suffer from weak

reception include IVA North, Culture and Society,

Engineering East, General South and the Barry Kaye

Hall in the College of Business.

Economics professor Eric Chiang, who teaches in

the College of Business, implemented an interactive

teaching method using text messaging in his courses.

“Cellphone reception is becoming more

important, even in the classroom, as more

professors use technologies that require wireless

signal,” Chiang said. “If there isn’t a strong wireless

signal within the classroom, that makes it more

difficult for students to participate.”

[cellphone reception] after the summer, but

I still don’t have good cellphone reception

this semester,” Jimmy Roberts, a senior

accounting major currently residing in IVA

North, said.

According to Ball, OIT isn’t aware of any

issues following the storm, but students living

in IVA North certainly are.

“I know that they’re trying to work on

something in IVA. They put in a Verizon

tower. It worked for a little while but then

it stopped working again,” Hosea Rogers, a

senior finance major, said.

Although there are a few kinks in the

current system, OIT is not planning to draft

a proposal about cellphone reception to the

Technology Fee Oversight Committee, the

administrative organization that oversees and

approves budget use of the technology fee.

The technology fee is part of students’

tuition and fees. The revenue generated from

the tech fee is then given to students, faculty

and staff who apply to fund projects approved

by the oversight committee. Students can

apply to use tech fee revenues at www.fau.

edu/techfee.

“Rather than use limited tech fee funding,

we have been working with the carriers to

address the issues,” Ball said. “Building a DAS

system does not guarantee participation by

the carriers.”

As far as the rest of the school goes, official

plans haven’t been completed, according to

OIT.

“We also recognize that other facilities,

such as Engineering East and Culture and

Society, suffer from the same problem,” Ball

said. “Because of our dependence on the

carriers, it is not possible to give a timeline

as to when service will be expanded to other

facilities.”

Until service is expanded, emergencies

such as Daniel Copher’s student fainting, may

continue to occur.

“Thankfully, [Lauryn] fully recovered

after a short hospital stay,” Copher said.

“But it was certainly an urgent situation that

needed immediate attention, which requires

cellphone reception.”

“I don't think I should have to run to

the window or go outside to call for life

saving help,” said Jason Sedler, a sophomore

management information systems major who

left the building that night to contact FAU

police. “Every second counts.”

cellphone reception cannot be changed,

there are solutions for this problem.

A main priority on campus, as far as

cellphone reception goes, is repairing

cellphone service in IVA North, according

to Jason Ball. IVA is the newest residence

hall on campus and has arguably the worst

reception.

“I never get reception in [IVA North],

ever,” Allison Segal, a sophomore business

major, said. “I have to stand against by [sic]

the window just to talk to my family.”

OIT has been in contact with Verizon

Wireless in an attempt to resolve the

problem of cellphone reception, but one

solution has already been implemented,

according to Ball.

A distributed antenna system (DAS) —

an antenna used to transmit service in small

scale areas — was installed in IVA North

late this summer, by Verizon Wireless, in an

attempt to boost cell reception.

“Verizon Wireless paid for the installation

of the system, which is currently live for

Verizon customers and public safety,” Ball

said. “The system is now available for other

carriers to join, and we are beginning

conversations in an attempt to persuade as

many carriers as possible to join.”

Kelly Starling, AT&T South Florida public

relations manager, confirmed that FAU

administration has been in contact with

AT&T about the issue as well.

“FAU apparently already knows how

to go about [repairing reception], because

they’re in touch with the AT&T account team

concerning solution options,” Starling said.

The UP reached out to Sprint and T-Mobile

representatives for comment, but haven’t

received responses as of press time.

Although Ball confirmed that Verizon did

install a DAS to fix the problem, residents

of IVA North are having issues of their own

with the device.

“In summer three semester, they put

some sort of device with Verizon up to fix

reception and it worked. Right after, [Tropical

Storm Isaac] happened, and it went out.

Now, reception is still out,” Jonelle Francois,

a sophomore communications and french

major, said.

Other students heard that the problem

was still in the process of being addressed.

“I heard that they were trying to fix

More problems and solutions

While FAU administrators are addressing poor

cellphone reception now, the University of Florida,

who had the same issue, has found a solution.

UF suffered from weak cellphone reception and

made arrangements in January 2012 for distributed

antenna systems to be installed to boost cellphone

reception, beginning in the UF football stadium and

eventually expanding school-wide — it didn’t cost

them a cent.

UF arranged a contract with AT&T, who paid for

the installation. The antennas have been placed in

the stadium as of September 2012, and remaining

antennas are to be placed throughout the school to

boost reception campus-wide.

FAU installed a similar system in Innovation

Village Apartments North, and Verizon Wireless paid

for the installation. Plans have not yet been made to

expand on the system.

According to Tracy Gale, communications

manager at University of Florida Information

Technology, the DAS has been fairly successful in the

stadium thus far.

“The project was completed on time as promised,

and signal reception is greatly enhanced,” Gale said.

“We expect to be successful as we continue rolling

out distributed antenna systems to upcoming areas

of campus.”

The system will only boost reception for AT&T

users for now, but according to The Alligator, UF’s

student newspaper, other major networks like

Verizon and Sprint are expected to join next year.

The antennas are expected to be installed within the

same time frame.

Hello, hello, hello?

FAU students sound off

Student Body Vice

President April Turner.

SG raises the bar

“It’s a huge priority for us to make sure that our

students can always communicate via cellphone,

not only in classrooms but also in dorms. So we

have addressed that concern to Student Affairs

Administration ... and we brought it up and Dr.

[Corey] King [associate vice president and dean

of students] is very supportive of us and our

concerns.”

“It’s been brought up to the deans and

vice president [Dr. King] that it’s definitely

something that’s on our agendas, and it’s not

being overlooked. Housing is aware of the

situation and we’re going to be active with that.

When the house comes back together to meet,

there’s a campus action committee that’s there,

and we’re going to get in contact with them and

start looking at other key areas that have the

same issue.”

What student government is doing about cellphone reception:

Student Body President

Robert Huffman.

Student Body Vice

President April Turner

Three easy ways to boost your cellphone reception:

1) Keep your battery charged more than 50 percent: Believe it or

not, battery life has a sig nificant effect on cellphone reception. With

high battery power, your phone will have more power to search for

signal.

2) Hold your phone at the correct angle: Most cellphones are

designed to retrieve signal at an angle perpendicular to the ground.

You can boost signal by holding your phone vertically.

3) Take care of your SIM card: The position of a SIM card in a phone

is important to cellphone signal as well. From time to time, check to

make sure the SIM card is positioned flat inside of the phone and is

clear of any dust or debris.

“We all communicate through texting, and we

need to be able to know what’s going on with

the organizations we’re involved in.” Amanda

Talham, senior secondary social science

education major

“I think it makes a lot of things very inconvenient

for the students, especially students living in IVA.”

Marques Bayas, sophomore criminal

justice major

“I definitely think [administration] should do

something about it, because they know their students

have and use cellphones. So they should definitely

do something to fix that.” Jordyn Paryz, junior

multimedia journalism major

“All the time, to receive an emergency call, I have

to step out of the classroom to take the call, which

disrupts the class, because you have to get up.”

Britney Irish, junior political science major

“It sucks, because if you’re somewhere, and you need

to call one of your friends to meet up somewhere,

you can’t call in the buildings. It’s just tough to

communicate around the school.” Nicole Samsel,

freshman biology major

“Pretty much anywhere where you’re inside a building

it’s pretty spotty. I think that the school should do

something about it, because they raised tuition,

what was it, 15 percent every year, so it should go

somewhere.” Cory Gondre, senior chemistry

major

“I always get concerned when there’s no service

wherever I am. What if there’s an emergency? How

are we supposed to call 911 for help?” Christine

Byron’s worldFAU’s senior wide receiver is more than helmet and pads — meet the poet with an alleged gas problem

Senior wide receiver Byron Hankerson is doing more on the football field this

season than last. For one thing, he’s actually playing. Hankerson was deemed academically ineligible last year and thus didn’t see a single snap. “It was a big disappointment that I didn’t play,” he said. “Going into next season, I was gonna be competing for a starting role. So, being ineligible was a big letdown.”

In 2010, Hankerson played primarily on the special teams unit, recording an assisted tackle against Arkansas State. 2011 was supposed to be Hankerson’s year.

Instead it’s 2012. So far this season, the 6-foot-1, 180 pound wide receiver has recorded 152 yards on 10 catches, two of which were touchdowns.

So, your mom’s from Marianna, Fla. I read that it has a population of about 6,000. Is it really that small? It’s a really small city. The popular area over there, the City Hall, is the size of the Boca mall. One community college, one high school, one middle school and a couple of elementary schools. We would go up there every summer so I could get to know that side of my family.

You know, get the best of both worlds. I enjoyed it a lot.

You said you were big on family. Did that close-knit, small environment foster any of that? Yes, it did. I brought that with me to the team. For instance, with the receivers, we break down “receiver love,” which is something our coach talked to us about. If I have a problem, I should be able to come to my

Wide receiver Byron Hankerson leads the team with 13.4 yards per catch. Hankerson was born in Miami, Fla. and played high school football at American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla.

teammates to talk about it, as well as my coach. So we kinda look out for each other. Growing up in that community, I brought that with me over to the football team and into a lot of aspects of my life.

What was the worst part about not playing last year? For my dad, he loves to come to the football games. He wasn’t able to come and watch me play. For my teammates, they depended on me as well. They kinda counted on me to get my act together. At the same time, I still brought a positive attitude to practice. Practiced on the scout team, scout offense, so my job was just to give the defense the best look that they can get going into the game. So, I had to play my role.

I saw on the FAU Sports homepage that you read poetry. I imagine some find that odd or different. What can you tell me about it? How’d you get into that?Just sitting everyday in class, reading poems and writing papers on poems, it brings out your creative side. The professor wanted us to write a poem about anything we wanted to. So, I wrote about the wind. I showed it to my family, they loved it. They didn’t know I wrote poems either.

Speaking of odd, some of your teammates have alleged that you have some sort of gas problem. Can you confirm or deny? [laughs] Did you talk to [William] Dukes? Was it Dukes that said that? Well, Dukes is funny, man. He really is. With him, it’s always either “you’re ugly,”“your breath smells,” or “you’ve got a gas problem.” Great guy. He has so much potential. He came into the program much farther along

than I was when I came in. Great receiver. If he keeps at it, keeps working hard, he should go down as one of the best receivers to come out of this program.

You don’t get a whole lot of free time. What do you do if and when you have a day to yourself?First, I wake up, and eat Frosted Mini-Wheats, one of my favorite cereals, because you can have it with milk or without milk and you’ll still enjoy it. Depending on how early I get up, I’d go fishing. Me and my dad, when I was younger, we always went fishing. As I got into sports, you know, you really don’t have time to fish. Best time to fish would be early in the morning and afternoon. I also play Xbox, you know everyone plays that or PS3. My favorite game is COD: [Call of Duty] Black Ops. I also watch movies, I’m a movie buff.

Your former teammate Alfred Morris has made national headlines recently playing for the Washington Redskins. He’s the only FAU player to have ever scored an NFL touchdown. So, suppose the NFL doesn’t come calling. What’s your backup plan?My father, brother and myself, we’ve been trying to start a little business together. We see a lot of churches get their doors knocked by the IRS or something, because their financial situation isn’t handled properly. So we wanna provide the services to help these churches take good care of their finances.

Would you consider working in film? Maybe directing? Nah, man. I mean, I love films, but the amount of work that goes into making a movie, production, acting, directing and all of that, it’s crazy.

Poem: By Byron Hankerson

Traveled uncharted courses of the open seas.Hard enough to shape rocks, but soft enough to cool cities. No one, no time nor place tells me when to go. I have seen my highs. I have seen my lows. From tsunamis, to ripples, I'm the one to blame. Some say trade winds east or west but I don't prefer names. I whip between small streets. Stride across the countryside to cool the sweat on your shirt.I'm hot, I'm warm, I'm cold, I'm Jack Frost nipping at your nose. I can pull your kite high in the sky and also push your boat. You'll want me on a hot day and curse me when it rains. I've seen America the beautiful and all her fruited plains. And no man wants to use me to power their countryside. But I'd rather blow through your hair on a long drive. I do what I want from year to year ignoring every trend. What else can I do, I'm just the wind.
