ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY

TODAY’S GOSPEL A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean." Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean." The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, "See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them." The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”– 1 Corinthians 10:31

Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank in that list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps us from putting other “gods” (like our pride and ego, money and possessions to name a few) before God. Before making a decision, ask yourself I’m I going this for the glory of God or for the glory of me?

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Thank you for your generosity!

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

No one who sought Jesus out was refused his help. Even the untouchables and the outcasts of Jewish society found help in him. Unlike the people of Jesus' time who fled at the sight of a leper, Jesus touched the leper who approached him and he made him whole and clean. Why was this so remarkable? Lepers were outcasts of society. Their physical condition was terrible as they slowly lost their limbs and withered away. They were not only shunned but regarded as "already dead" even by their relatives. The Jewish law forbade anyone from touching or approaching a leper, lest ritual defilement occur. This leper did something quite remarkable.

"already dead" even by their relatives. The Jewish law forbade anyone from touching or approaching a leper, lest ritual defilement occur. This leper did something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus could and would heal him. Normally a leper would be stoned or at least warded off if he tried to come near a rabbi. Jesus not only grants the man his request, but he demonstrates the personal love, compassion, and tenderness of God in his physical touch. The medical knowledge of his day would have regarded such contact as grave risk for incurring infection. Jesus met the man's misery with compassion and tender kindness. He communicated the love and mercy of God in a sign that spoke more eloquently than words. The Lord is always ready to show us his mercy and to free us from whatever makes us unclean. For Reflection: “Do you seek the Lord Jesus with expectant faith? How do you approach the untouchables and outcasts, and those you find difficult to love? Do you offer them mercy and help as Jesus did?”

MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

The most privileged time in the history of salvation has begun, God was revealed to us as man, except in sin, to reconcile us with Him for the sake of love. Through His love, compassion, forgiveness and mercy, we are partakers of His Kingdom through His only begotten Son, Jesus. The people of Israel, being slaves in Egypt, were taken away from slavery and led through the wilderness by the hand of God into the Promised Land. This long voyage lasted 40 years, where many perished. But God, our Father kept His promise by bringing them into the land where they would be free.

The son of God, Jesus Christ, was also fasting, praying, preparing himself and making

sacrifices for 40 days, as an example to follow his Father and to reconcile us with Him. During this time, Jesus was tempted by the devil, but He always stood strong without falling into sin.

Lent, is important time for prayer, fasting, sacrifice, preparation, reconciliation, alms, and a radical change in our hearts. It is the call to change from sin to grace, from death to life, reconciling and seeking forgiveness. “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning. Rend your heart, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.” Joel 2:12

Lent is the opportunity to change, return unto the Lord, change your course of life and accept it as well, as in Psalm 51: “Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me.”

This is what the Lord wants to give us, a new opportunity to get closer to him, with sincere heart. During this season of Lent, be close to the Lord. Let the Lord come into your life, your actions and family. Experience Jesus’ love, which never accuses nor discriminates, rather, is always willing to forgive because He loves us so much.

God Bless you,

Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.

Padre Leonardo Jaramillo, PhD.
