    9.2.9 CounterWeightsCounterweights may be required for keeping the pilot suspension insulators in a nearly vertical position.Where used, they shall be fitted below the suspension clamp by extension of the clamp keeper bolts.9.2.10 Tension Joints and ClampsTension joints for phase and earth conductor) shall be compression type and shall have jumper terminalflags for use with bolted jumper palms. Jumper terminal flags shall be of the two-bolt type. Tensionjointsand clamps shall be designed to meet the following requirements:1 That after installation the initial contact area between the fitting and the conductor does not raise

    stresses which may lead to failure under aeolian vibration or other conductor oscillationconditions;

    2 To avoid localised pressures which may cause excessive cold flow of the conductor or earthwirematerial;

    3 To minimise internal voids and to prevent the ingress or entrapment ofmoisture during service;4 Tensions joints and clamps shall not permit slipping of, or cause damage to, or failure of the

    complete conductor, or any part thereof at a load less than 9 percent of the rated strength of theconductor.

    9.2.11 Mid spans Tension JointsMid-span tension joints shall be of the compression type. Joints for hOlTIogenous conductors shallinclude a central barrier stop to ensure correct longitudinal centring of the joint.Mid-span joints shall not be used for single span sections. It shall be used only in rare circumstances withthe prior written permission of the Owner/Engineer at other locations. Drum schedules shall be preparedand conductor and earth wire ordered in lengths as dictated by the requirement to avoid mid-span joints.This is a Hold Point.9.2.12 Jumper PalmsPalms for connecting jumper loops to dead-ends shall be of the compression type with either straight, or30 degree lugs. Jumper palms shall be supplied completed with bolt assemblies.Bolt assemblies shall consist of bolt and nuts to Grade 8.8/8.0 in accordance with BS 4190 complete withload spreading washers. Load spreading washers shall be 44 mm diameter and 9.5 mm thick for M16bolts. To prevent loosening in service the minimum installation torque shall not be less than 90 Nm.

    9.2.13 Repair SleevesRepair sleeves shall be of the compression type with either two-part with interlocking of the keeper orkey type. Reference shall be made to Appendix 9A for specific requirements.Repair sleeves shall be designed to make good a conductor of which not more than one-third of thestrands of the outer layer have been severed. Contractor shall seek specific approval of theOwner/Engineer for making use of repair sleeves. This is a Hold Point.9.2.14 Earthwire Bonding ClampsEarthwire bonding clamps for the connection of earth wire bond to the earth wire shall be in accordancewith the requirements of S 4579.
